More on Obama and Steve Cohen

From MSNBC.com's Tom Curry
Rep. Steve Cohen -- an early Obama endorser -- told me in June (right after Emily’s List endorsed his primary foe Nikki Tinker) that he was disappointed that Obama was not helping him.

The primary is today in Memphis.

Cohen said then that he’d asked the Obama campaign staff if Obama would come to Memphis to campaign for him, but they rejected the idea, saying Obama wouldn’t get involved in congressional primaries. Yet Obama did do a radio ad in June endorsing Rep. John Barrow of Georgia, another white Democrat who faced an African-American primary opponent.

Cohen said in June he was disappointed that Obama wouldn’t go to bat for him.

As a white candidate running in a congressional district with a black majority population, Cohen likens himself to Obama, a mixed-race man running for president of a mostly white country. “I’m asking people to judge me just as [Obama] is asking people to judge him,” Cohen said.

When I called Cohen’s campaign manager Jerry Austin a few minutes ago, he had not yet heard of the Obama statement denouncing the inflammatory ads being aired by Nikki Tinker.

Referring to Obama, Austin noted that this statement was not an endorsement. He said sourly, “We’re going to win without his endorsement.”

As for today’s statement from Obama condemning the Tinker ads (although not Tinker by name) Austin said, “The ads started last Friday. He could have said this earlier rather than on election day. Better late than never.”

And Navy officers have a term for their enlisted personnel - Enlisted Friends. They say it with a snide smile, because the inside joke (one in which only Navy officers think is funny) is the F in friends is universally understood to refer to another word. Seriously. These guys think that's funny.

Now take a look at John McCain, and how he's always calling others "my friend." Kind of makes me wonder. Is this just another juvenile Navy-like tongue-in-cheek joke?

Paul,

Now.... factor in 'the tail hook' scandal. You may be on to something.
When will the members of the Democatic Party get it through their thick skulls that the news media is NOT the place to air their grievances with one another?

Good grief.

I am sure that Senator Obama hasn't been following each local ad that comes out in Memphis, TN. He's got his hands full trying to seem humbly Presidential - whatever that means.

P.S. Democrats from the state of Tennessee haven't exactly been wholeheartedly behind Senator Obama either - from the Governor on down. I am sure that Senator Obama hasn't been following each local ad that comes out in Memphis, TN.
Obama is BUSY! He can't be everywhere! Geesh. I hope Cohen wins, though, from the sound of it Tinker has run a nasty campaign.
Austin is right.  Cohen can learn that Obama does not have your back, even though you supported him.  African-Americans like Tinker and the guy that ran against Barrow in GA will also learn Obama doesn't have your back.  Obama is about himself winning the presidency.
Cohen should not feel slighted. Obama has no time for others, only himself. It's always been that way with him.
So now Obama is supposed to keep tabs on 435 primaries?  I sure hope my mayor doesn't get upset that Barack won't come shovel her driveway in the winter.  I mean the guy is good, but give it a rest, Cohen.
SEN OBAMA SHOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO REFEREE A PRIMARY THEY NEED TO LEARN TO PLAY NICE. GOOD FOR SEN OBAMA.

THIS IS A RACE BETWEEN DEMOCRATS AND SHOULD STAY THAT WAY.  THE BEST PERSON WINS, AND SEN. OBAMA HAS APPLIED THAT COMMON SENSE.  GOOD FOR HIM

SEN. OBAMA WAS ALSO RIGHT TO STAND AGAINST NEGATIVE ATTACKS.  GOODO FOR HIM.  SUCH ATTACKS SERVE TO DO NOTHING BUT DIVIDE AND MAKE OUR COUNTRY LOOK LIKE WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CLASS, SENSE OF PRIDE OR OF COUNTRY

THAT'S RIGHT GOP ATTACK ADS HAVE SENT THE SIGNAL THAT THE STATEMENT ABOVE APPLIES TO YOU.  THESE PEOPLE CAN'T REALLY BE EDUCATED CAN THEY?

WHAT A NEGATIVE MESSAGE THIS SEND TO OUR KIDS, GET AND EDUCATION BUT IN TIMES OF DESPERATION ACK LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY SENSE AT ALONE LET ALONE PRIDE OF COUNTRY.
Why no endorsement form Senator Jughead?
As for today’s statement from Obama condemning the Tinker ads (although not Tinker by name) Austin said, “The ads started last Friday. He could have said this earlier rather than on election day. Better late than never.”

Mr. Austin,

Give Senator Obama a break please. The man has been under sieze for weeks with no let up, and almost no help from surrogates; unlike McCain.

What the Cohen Campaign does not understand is that Obama is trying to president of the USA not just the black Community. Although Tinker's Ads were despicable, it's very unfrotunate that Tennesse politics is like that
As an African American I like Steve Cohen; Nikki Turner does not deserve to win. She is running a racist campaign. She is terrible using the KKK agenda and this is reverse racism. Good Luck Steve Cohen
Barack Obama - has his own compaign to run.  Would he be asking Barack Obama for his support if he wasn't running for President?

Come on folks - Barack can't carry the burden of all wanna be's on his shoulders.

He will stay focus on the his election - so he can be our country's next President.

Be happy about that and do your part to help HIM win.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

I support Obama and can understand his reluctance to
get involved in every race around the country, he has all he can do to try and stay ahead of the smears against him every day. I am glad he said the smear tactics Ms Tinker is using is unbecoming any candidate.  I hope that the people of tennessee will see through this sort of attack campaign and look to
who will represent thier intrest and vote accordingly.
I would really hope that nothing would have to be said condeming such practices. It really reeks, Hope
Ms tinker feels the heat of condemnation today.

Sorry Mr. Cohen,

You don't live in a battle ground state like Ga. You can't expect me to put my neck on the line for just anyone, especially someone in a state that will most certainly stay red.

Geez how stupid do you think I am?

Kind Regards,
Barak "change you can believe in" Obama
And whose coat-tails is Obama riding? NOBODY'S. He's out there campaigning on his own merits. I suggest the rest of them do that, too.
Obama is into people supporting Him. Him supporting other people? That doesn't really make any sense to Barack.
Are all these Dems clamouring for Sen. Obama's help in the primaries for real? It's a no-win situation for him. If he sides with a white candidate, some black folks may accuse him of "selling out". If he sides with the black candidate, others, especially the repugnant talking heads will accuse him of siding with "his own"!
Sen. Obama is in the race of his life trying to save us from the doom of another 4 years of a Republican administration. All you Dems running in primaries ought to understand the situation and give him all the support you can, and not expect any back, at least not right now. Wake up already!
I highly recommend reading this article.

Barack The Cable Guy
By Bob Beckel
Plain to see obama is ONLY out to serve himself. He'll in Georgia, only because he thinks he will carry that sate.
Obama cannot be every where for Christ sake. Obama this, Obama that, Obama hasn't done this, Obama hasn't done that. Jeeze the guy is human.

By the way, Tennessee is not part of their strategy and why should he care about the state.
Nice to see that Barack Obama is taking a well deserved vacation. While he's out and about on his travels, if he runs into any congressmen, maybe he could pass the message along that they should get back to Washington to vote for the drilling bill that Barack now supports.
Gee Mr Austin , I think it is sad that the man made a statement and that because he has not made one ealier that that was not good enough. Let's see Has Obama not been on the campaign trail himself. First off as a black man I think that Tinker woman is way out of line. She is down right disgusting to use that kind of attack. I dont think that the Cohen campaign should be bitter with Obama. May be he was giving him a subtle brush off , but took offence to to the statements as well.
As for today’s statement from Obama condemning the Tinker ads (although not Tinker by name) Austin said, “The ads started last Friday. He could have said this earlier rather than on election day. Better late than never.”

Maybe he has no surrogates because if stuff like this. Obama made a lot of promises to get the support of those superdelegates...let's see how he comes through on his promises.

The "less than warm" reception he recieved in his return to congress may be a good indication of what his fellow Dems are thinking of him.
To the poster who complained about David Gregory and his "Race to the White House".

I have no respect for David Gregory whatsoever. He is one of the most over rated journalists on the scene today. I couldn't believe MSNBC gave him a TV show.

To me he's a symbol of how the media let this country down big time during W's rush to invade Iraq.

His show is a joke!!

I apologize for being  a little late on my comments but work seems to keep getting in the way.

You two really need to grow up.
It is unfortunate that Tinker has chosen to run a racist campaign, but Obama has his hands full.  The Bush/MCcain/Rove/Cheney re-election campaign couldn't wait to get the ad up for McCain showing Obama with the two young, white blondes.  People might not have caught on except the Republicons have only one playbook that they pull their dirty tricks from.
They are very familiar to those of us who pay attention.  Most recently they used the young white blonde girls with Harold Ford, the black candidate from Tennessee who narrowly lost his bid for Congress.
They exploit the racist biases of some of the white folk and when they are called on it, they turn it around and accuse you of playing the race card.
It's is a nasty game played by people who care a whole lot about achieving power and care not so much about our country or its people.

HA! HA! That was good!!! I was thinking the same thing. Barack is up on the issues and really smart but GIVE IT A REST already!

The reason why Obama doesn't want to stick his neck out on this one is not because the challenger is black. It's because the challenger is female and backed by Emily's List. The last thing Obama wants to do now is annoy Emily's List any more than he already has. But trust the media to cook this story to boiling point. The media is McCain's BASE. This is a no-win situation for Obama.
