McCain camp reviewing contributions

Posted: Thursday, August 07, 2008 4:45 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Jim Popkin
A spokesman for McCain said campaign officials are reviewing hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions following newspaper reports that a foreign national may have helped bring in some of that money.

"We want to make sure that all the contributions to this campaign are appropriate," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told NBC News.

The McCain campaign letter.

The New York Times reported today that the business partner of a major McCain "bundler" is a foreign national who helped collect campaign-donation checks.

Rogers said the McCain campaign has issued a letter to all donors who sent their contributions through bundler Harry Sargeant III, the finance chairman of the Florida Republican Party. Sargeant's longtime business partner is Mustafa Abu Naba'a, a dual citizen of Jordan and the Dominican Republic. Sargeant told the Times that he at times left the task of collecting the checks to Naba'a.

It's illegal for foreigners to contribute their own money to U.S. campaigns.

"Due to recent news reports, we are writing to remind you of the legal requirement for making contributions to federal candidates," the McCain letter states. "John McCain 2008 is prohibited by federal law from accepting contributions from…foreign nationals," it adds.

*** UPDATE *** McCain's campaign is returning more than $40,000 in campaign donations that were solicited by a foreign national, a McCain spokesman tells NBC News. "As a precautionary measure, we are going to return any contributions that were solicited by Mr. Abu Naba'a," spokesman Brian Rogers said.

So predictable.

And the media will willingly sweep it under the rug.

Whatever.
and speaking of oil industry:

a response from earlier, I apologize it isn't a trite sound bite.

“Clara, that doesn't add up.  You can't be a Democrat today and be self reliant.  The whole principle of the DNC today is that the government should help you get dressed every morning.  And they'll send the oil execs to your home to do this since it's their fault.  And by the way you've had to have had your brain surgically removed if Obamanomics makes any sense to you.  You don't have to be for McCain but how can you be against laws of supply and demand?  Question: if oil companies are forced to pay a windfall profit tax who do you think ultimately pays for that tax?   Don't feel bad if this stumps you and you are an Obama fan.  Apparently he doesn't know the answer to this either.”  Rob, Tampa, FL (Sent Thursday, August 07, 2008 10:10 AM)
----------------
Your comments are so ignorant, hyper generalized and off point that it will take more than a trite sound bite for me to respond rationally.  I know you THINK Dems are feeding at the trough, constantly – But how do you explain the ‘break out’ success of such notable ‘Uber’ Rich Dems like Warren Buffet, George Soros and Bill Gates (okay, I don’t actually know that Bill is a Dem; but he sure acts like one).  I don’t want the oil execs or anyone from your team coming into my room in the morning.  I feel certain it wouldn’t be to help me dress; but more likely to bend me over further.  And yes, I do think the Oil companies are pillaging the entire country.  They have the capital to open more refineries NOW.  There are several existing refineries that could be operational in a few months.  The only rule that guides them is ‘They who manipulate the supply manipulate the price’.  The cost of fuel (or oil) isn’t driven right now by real Supply and Demand (which by the way, isn’t a LAW – it’s just an economic theory) issues; but rather by speculation on future supply issues.  Let me be clear, we do not have a current Supply issue, we have a Marketing issue.  This is an attempt by OPEC nations to maintain a raw oligopoly.  Oil is not rare.  But by continuing to control that which gets refined, they can manipulate the perception of scarcity.  Basically, they are fraudulently perpetuating the myth that there isn’t enough.  They are doing this to manipulate the price.  This is called price fixing.  It is illegal.  It does not help that Congress is lame and that many on the committee don’t know how to actually manage an insightful inquiry into price fixing.  So the execs just sit there and say things like, “no, I don’t think we are gouging John Q. Public.”

It further does not help our (USA) case at the OPEC table that our dollar is weak, due to the excessive borrowing from a rapidly growing (larger than us) economy (China).  And why have we borrowed all this money?  Oh, riiiighht, to pay for Bush’s war of choice.  Now as far as Obamanomics goes and this will be a hard pill for you to swallow; but a Tax and Spend Liberal at least has a plan for where the revenue stream will come from.  Admittedly, the party of Repubs don’t want to pay a penny more than they HAVE to, especially if it is going to the ‘non-deserving, lazy half of the electorate’ (I’m not putting words into YOUR mouth – I’ve seen these very comments from your side on this site, several times this week, in fact).

{Let’s take a pause for station identification, I am an Obama Supporter.  Also, are you following along?  This is the point where most Repubs sit back and smugly think, wow – this Dem at least understands where I am coming from.  I don’t want to lull you into complacency, because I’m about to step up the pace of our little waltz here.}

According to your circular logic Repubs shouldn’t have to pay ANY tax.  A kind of send back to the ‘I earned it, why should I share it?’ philosophy.  So here’s the swift kick to the groin you’ve been dreading.  You didn’t EARN it.  You borrowed it from the goodwill of our nasty, mean old government.  And here’s how.  For decades governments (city, state and federal) have given hand over fist incentives to entice businesses to operate in their jurisdictions because companies create jobs, jobs employ people and people with jobs spend money (often more than they should – but that’s another topic).  Often land is sold at a discount, often taxes are deferred or forgiven, and an entire host of government handouts are bundled and handed to the corporations.  Often the good ole’ UsofA has shouldered the fiscal burden of off shore drilling, equipment or other tax concessions or breaks.  And never do these companies look back over their portfolios and say, wow – were it not for those who went before and shouldered some of this expense, we could have never weathered (XYZ storm).  We don’t just owe our fair share of taxes, we should really do more.  Taxes are the dues we all pay to live in a free society.  The funny thing about Freedom is that it isn’t free.  Those who HAVE more should DO more.  Would that an oil exec actually had a pair and could say, “We’ve had unexpected windfall profits because of speculation, it is our duty and obligation to give back to the society that has given us so much”.  I am not talking about the shareholders here.  I am talking about the consumer.  You guys all sit around and act like these are real ‘earnings’.

The issues you are loathe to consider are that of a generous spirit.  Not to the point of poverty for you; but to the point that a rising tide raises ALL boats.  A general Golden Rule of doing for others as you would want them to do for you (or your loved ones, G-d willing you weren’t here to take care of them).  This is where Repubs lose my respect and my vote.  They think charity only extends to the edge of their sphere of influence.  They will lobby to abolish abortion and vote to reduce/get rid of welfare; because they aren’t responsible for providing at minimum food, clothing and shelter for those ‘unwanted children’ that are really someone else’s problem.  Republicans can’t govern because they simply want to take care of ‘their own’ and leave everyone else to either pull themselves up through all of the ‘same opportunities’ that they themselves received or whatever ‘fend for themselves’ mechanism du jour.  And often (not always) this is done under the hypocritical guise of ‘Christianity’.  G-d hates F*gs, or G-d says abortion stops a beating heart.  If abortion is heinous and Repubs want it criminalized then what is their plan to care for the unwanted children?  You really can’t have it both ways.  Either you prevent unwanted pregnancies or you plan and budget for the result of no prevention.  That is the problem, Repubs just don’t PLAN well.  They just don’t think these things through.  And for the very few that have thought it through on some level, their calculator doesn’t allow for them to think it through on a grand 300+ million people level.  You can sit there and act like you earned your way; but if you had an honest bone in your body you’d look around and actually see all of the people that make up the fabric of this great country and you’d realize that no matter how small their contribution is to your personal wealth or your personal situation, on some level their very existence in the world is a direct result of the failure or success of our government’s policies.  If you do not see that, than you are at worst stupid and at best a true hypocrite.

In summary, I am very much a Dem and self reliant.  Got my own self dressed and to work at a real job today.  Have the brain I was born with which I paid to have expanded by Pell grants and Student Loans (that are 100% paid back, no defaults there), don’t worry – I am not for McCain (who could be?  Seriously?) I am FOR Obama.  Supply and Demand, not a Law – an economic theory.  I’ve already paid twice for the windfall profit – in corporate welfare and at the pump, oh – and you’re an idiot,

Just thinking earlier today what the MSM would look like if it was giving the close scrutiny it is giving to Obama to McCain.

My fear is that we will wake up in January with an egregiously unvetted president.

In McCain's case, that could be very dangerous.

Can't help but think that these folks are sharp enough to understand that, but whatever floats your check, whoever buys your groceries.

WHY WEREN'T THERE PREVENTIVE MEASURES IN PLACE PRIOR? WHY DID THE NEWS MEDIA HAVE TO TELL THE MCCAIN CAMP THAT FOREIGN WERE ILLEGAL CONTRIBUTING TO THE CAMPAIGN?

ONCE AGAIN CAUGHT WITH MCCAIN'S IN THE COOKIE JAR.

Senator Magoo should rethink that whole celebrity/messiah line of attack. There are too many lunatics out there. Case in point that guy they just arrested. He's encouraging freaks who believe Obama is the anti Christ
More ammo for the fascist Democrats to use...
Vote for Barr. It is sad to me that navy man McCain who is a hero has just turned into another run of the mill politician willing to say or do anything for power just Jimmy Obama who is worse beciuse he would lose our wars too.  It is Bob Barr who is the only real conservative who is running a truthful campaign.  Americans really lost out without Huckabbee being in the race so vote for Bob Barr to stay away from stupid liberal tax and spending because McCain can't beat Obama without a miracle.
So McCain is doing an audit. Something any campaign should do from time to time.
They should, they need to return all that illegal oil money!
Good for McCain ! Thats a stand up man. Unlike obama's good friends money launder Resko, anti american Wright and terrorist friend Ayers.
Who is donna?
They sound a little nervous
Maybe Obama should return his donations to Hamas at the same time.
So, it's true. Today the McCain camp is scrambling to rid themselves of the contributions brought in through Sargeant. Someone predicted this would happen, I don't remember where the report came from, but it was right on. I'd be willing to bet the McCain camp cleans up as much as they can and will return the contributions that won't clean up.
This just in!
Another memo leaked on McCain's general election strategy.

1. Call Obama an elitist
2. When he insists he grew up poor with a single mom in Hawaii, call him "exotic"
3. When he says exotic is a code word, say he is playing the race card.
4. When he moves to the center and tries to make non-partisan deals with us, call him a flip-flopper. When he doesn't, call him an extreme left-wing liberal.
5. When he draws a big crowd, call him a celebrity
6. When he gives a good speech, say he's too slick or something dated like "snakeoil salesman".
7. When he ignores us and turns the other cheek, say he thinks he's jesus!

Holy cow!  GO CLARA!

Wow, girl.  You've been working on that retort a while.
Boy, that wrinkly old guy is really great, isn't he?
All of sudden they want to be honest and upright and accurate and above board and all around good guys.
America wake up....we have just been through 8 years of the most mismanaged, deceitful, untrustworthy, secretive, manipulative and COSTLY administration this country has ever seen...How could anyone vote for another republican (McCain votes with Bush 95%) and reward this inept party.
OBAMA 08
FR: *** UPDATE *** Now, the Democratic National Committee has produced its own Web video that has quotes from all of these Democrats hammering McCain.

So what have we learned? That these Democrats are hypocrites?
This sounds like the same letter Mccain  put out that said he was getting rid of the lobbyist on his campaign.Yet there still there!
Should anyone be surprised to hear about foreign nationals sneaking in contributions? How much of Bill Clinton's money comes from outside of the country? In fairness to the doddering old man, unless it can be proven that the campaign made a conscious effort to seek foreign contributions, we should move on. Did I mention his age?
That didn't take long at all. Chuck called it!
What's fishy?  People making $40,000/year making $61,000 donations - that's not fishy, that down right McRespectable.
Obviously mccain and his campaign have no idea what they are doing. I certainly don't want this dumb, bitter old man running my beloved country.
I was waiting to hear about this on the TV yesterday. Unfortunately 80% was Paris Hilton and the other 20% was about the stupid polls. Tell me this. If Florida and Ohio were won by Bush the last election why is it not McLovedByTheMedia that is in trouble there if he's the one that's BEHIND. DUH!!  Oops!! Silly me. McCain is known to the public, McCain is the one that is experienced, McCain is the one that should therefore be in the lead, but that would be a McCain negative. And the media can't have that. You lot are pathetic.
"Due to recent news reports, we are writing to remind you of the legal requirement for making contributions to federal candidates," the McCain letter states. "John McCain 2008 is prohibited by federal law from accepting contributions from…foreign nationals," it adds."  So is this the McCain campaign's way of telling them to CYA?

More of the double talk express is apparent.
Just like DHL and lobbyist Davis and shuttling military contracts for DHL...Crazy. Anyone who votes for this desperado is misguided.

I will vote for NOBODY, BUT OBAMA!
NOBODY, BUT OBAMA!

Typical hypocrisy by the McCan't camp. John McCain consistently lies about and distorts Obama's record, and makes slurs about his ability to lead, and mentions something about him "not understanding" something. Mr. McCain, the People of the United States understand something about you -- that you will lie and say anything in order to get elected. YOU don't understand that a vast majority of people in this counrty are SICK of Republican lies and distortions.

This really is a Democratic year, so why don't you save yourself the time and embarassment of loosing, and go sit in the shade with your aging trophy wife -- "Sindy". You two can have a few brewskies.

If the McCain camp wants civility, then they need to stop instigating arguments and lying perpetually about Obama. It really is getting about as Old as McCain himself.

I doubt very much that John McCain is doing anything that is grossly illegal, immoral or underhanded.  Really.

I am more concerned that the MSM looks for this stuff and leaves the small change on the table.

This is precisely the template for the MSM's relationship to the Bush administration, largely defined by the corporate bottom line and by the Bush White House itself.

We have a MSM that is looking for the next OJ, BJ, spot on a blue dress.

All the while, we have had a rogue administration which has quite truly gotten away with murder and the rape of our Constitution.

I see the cynical sneer of Mainstream millionaire Newsies who respond to this allegation on the part of someone who is apparently no one, "Prove it."

I say that is your job and you have done a damn poor job of it, if I may say so.

McCain is not a bad guy.  He is a cartoon.  George Bush is not so "bad" as he is Alfred E Newman in the history of the American Presidency.  These people are no more or less capable of evil than a nobody like myself. They are just empty storefronts, waiting to be stocked by the highest bidder.

If the MSM had the depth and patriotism to call these things, this "small change," to cut the smarmy sneer when people bring up something just a tad more critical than bathroom seating styles, and spent less time with trying to to advance their careers at whatever cost, we would be a safer and wiser nation.

When we have all sold out, the rats will take over the store.

It has already happened.

Send all the Harry Sargeant money back, McCain.

Why has it taken you this long?
It's the rest of the story that shows who McCain is.

1) Sargeant accompanied Charlie Crist to Jordan and Israel in May (well-connected) and Congress is investigating a lucrative contract to ship fuel through Jordan to Iraq involved an influential group of people, including Florida businessman Harry Sargeant III, who is now a top fundraiser for Sen. John McCain's presidential bid.

2) Just look at the unusual donors that top Charlie Crist fundraiser/former fraternity brother Harry Sargeant III bundled for John McCain: "...Most had never given a political contribution before being contacted by Sargeant or his associates. Most said they have never voiced much interest in politics. And in several instances, they had never registered to vote. And yet, records show, some families have ponied up as much as $18,400 for various candidates between December and March.

"Both Sargeant and the donors were vague when asked to explain how Sargeant persuaded them to give away so much money.

"I have a lot of Arab business partners. I do a lot of business in the Middle East. I've got a lot of friends," Sargeant said in a telephone interview yesterday. "I ask my friends to support candidates that I think are worthy of supporting. They usually come through for me."

Sargeant's company, International Oil Trading Co. (IOTC), has contracts worth more than $1 billion with the Defense Department to supply fuel to the U.S. military in Iraq. The company, which had not done any government work before it first won that contract in 2004, signed a two-year extension worth $913 million in 2007.

As if the story needed additional intrigue, Sargeant told the Washington Post that he had some help in locating donors from the former top counterterrorism official in the CIA, who consults for his firm. The Post opted not to name the official.

Nice friends. Business as usual. Maverick? I think not.

McCain = Bush = More of the SAME
I hope it is not to late to post this, Donna my prayers are with you as well. Remember to seek the Lord who cometh my help. I will tell you this and this only ,If you believe in Jesus Christ and know him to be the healer and way maker that he is and your family believes as well then you know that all things are possible through him. So just pray as many of us will be doing and believe it after you pray. I call it giving it up to God.     Ok now back to the trouble n this page I cant remember who but somebody said earlier to expect by 5pm tomorrow for McBush to start giving back some of that money we shall see. I think he needs to start with Paris Hiltons family since his honorless campaign insulted their daughter.
Here it is: The VP match up

McCain / Romney
Obama / Byah
Okay, so is this a maybe it happened or just preventive because it may have happened and they are trying to cover themselves
Off Topic - Sorry I missed this earlier and I never get posted.

But why is everyone after Hillary again?  The media loves to fire this up.  She did get more Democratic votes than Obama and if the Primary didn't let independents and Republicans vote in the Democratic primary he would not have won.  She is helping, she is a very important political person and so is Pres. Clinton.

Obama would do well to make nice and count them as friends rather than enemies.
Mustafa; the new Abrahamoff. Typical Republican corruption.
MSNBC:
Do you really believe in a fair reviewing by McCain's camp????
Please do your own investigations or stop reporting such jokes.
Just imagine if this story were about Obama! 30 point type on MSNBC's main page, I'll bet. Oh, and no mention of the middle class Hess office manager who gave, what, 60 grand? Once upon a time there were INVESTIGATIVE reporters, instead of the industry lapdogs we've got.
