Veepstakes PM: 'Completely committed'

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger and Carrie Dann
THE SHORT LIST:
Sen. Hillary Clinton said on a Web chat that she was “completely committed” to helping Obama. She said she would “respect the privacy of that process” by not speaking about the veep speculation.

Per NBC's Lauren Appelbaum, McCain praised former Rep. Rob Portman in an interview with NBC affiliate WLIO in Lima, Ohio: “We're just doing the process that you have to go through and if we mention names, then there's endless speculation. But I have been asked about Rob Portman here in Ohio. And certainly I have not said anything except Rob Portman is one of the next generation of leaders of our party. But, I'm sorry that we can't mention any names or where we are in this process. I'm sorry. I apologize.”

Obama said his team and Clinton’s team were working out details about whether she’d be placed in nomination: “I don’t think we’re looking for catharsis. I think what we are looking for is energy and excitement about the prospects of changing this country, and I think that people who supported a whole range of different candidates during the primaries are going to come out of that convention feeling absolutely determined that we have to take the White House back.”

ON THE RECORD:
An Ohio voter had some unsolicited vice presidential advice for John McCain Thursday. “I lay awake at night worrying,” the man asked. “You get these reports on television that it’s a neck and neck race. I would like to see a landslide victory for you, and I’d like to vote in November for a McCain/Rice ticket.” Others shouted “Romney” and “Lieberman.”

Former Gov. Mitt Romney said he is angry the Chinese government revoked the visa of Joey Cheek, a former Olympian who is working for peace in Sudan. “I hope the Chinese government is able to reconsider this,” Romney said in a phone interview between flights in Washington. “Joey Cheek is by no means an out-of-control radical. He's a very serious, sober, responsible individual, and his support for human rights certainly can't be in any way a detraction from the games.”

WHAT THEY’RE UP TO:
Clinton will campaign for Obama at Green Valley High School in Henderson, NV Friday.

Portman will lead the U.S. delegation to Santo Domingo on Aug. 16 for the inauguration of the new president of the Dominican Republican. He will be joined by former major league baseball player Julio Franco and New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya.

The Chicago Tribune's Swamp reports: “John McCain is scheduled to return to Pennsylvania Monday for a two-day swing through the western and central part of the state, this time with former Gov. Tom Ridge at his side.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will host his weekly radio show on WCCO 830 AM.

BUZZ METER:
The National Review looks at dark horse candidate Frederick W. Smith. “While Smith’s life story and hands-on experience managing a large, successful corporation in the era of globalization would be a lovely addition to any future administration, Smith’s potential flaws as a running mate are clear. He has never held elected office, nor sought it, which would complicate the “experience” charge used against Obama.”

Bet you'd never heard of Shirkieville, Indiana (pop. 50), but veep buzz over hometown boy Sen. Evan Bayh reached a crescendo there this week. “‘Everybody's pretty sure that he’s going to get it,’ said Carolyn Powers, co-owner of the Midway Bar and Grill in the heart of Shirkieville. ‘It would put the Midway on the map, wouldn't it?’”

CHATTERING CLASS:
Pawlenty’s visit to Washington got mixed reviews. “the New York Times, calls it "low voltage," but the Washington Post's Dana Milbank terms it a "strong audition" for the veepstakes.”

Donna,
I hope this gets posted.  I'll try to post a message again tomorrow.  I've enjoyed reading your reasoned, sometimes humorous thoughts, and I will miss your posts.

My father was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 50; he had surgery and chemo and is a 16-year survivor. He got a colostomy because of the location of tumor, but you'd never know it; he still goes hiking, backpacking, and camping. It doesn't curtail any of his activities except for swimming. Well, I'll pray for the best for your dad.

Take care,

Beth
This is easy for Hillary.  Say to your supporters that you can't tell them how much you appreciate their support, but Obama is the nominee and you hope they will now join you in supporting them.  Say this consistently and we will have a unified message.
Hillary received more Democratic votes in the primary than Obama did.  She doesn't want to be VP, she just wants what is due her,  And despite what some Obama folks thinks, many did want her to be President.  hey have also know her time passed but that doesn't mean she should be forgotten and Obama would do well to remember that.

I am sick of reading here that NO ONE wants her because that simply is NOT true.

I son't vote for McCain but if Obama wants my vote he darn well should show respect.
It would be great if Obama put Bill Richardson on the ticket just to see if America can withstand two minorities leading this great country of emmigrants. Richardson has the kind of credentials that obama needs in a veep, especially the foreign policy experience. I think that he (Richardson) is the real dark horse in this election.

Hillary said “I think that is a very big part how we actually come out unified”

First of all, it’s debatable that Hillary won the most votes. If you argue she didn’t include the caucuses, then she hasn’t the most votes.
Secondly, putting political Olympics aside, Hillary must approve, in writing, for her name to be placed in nomination thus far she hasn’t done that. Hillary is a lot smarter.
1. Hillary wants her debt paid.
2. Hillary wants the presidency in 2016; if the aging process hasn’t set in. I wish her well.
3. Hillary can’t afford to burn bridges in the DNP.
Putting political Olympics aside, Hillary must approve, in writing, for her name to be placed in nomination thus far she hasn’t done that; but she is talking to her home girls about a run for 2012.

Is there gold in the Whitehouse?
I'm sure I'll catch a little heat for suggesting this, but if Hillary is VP (which I wouldn't mind at all, honestly), would the risk of an assasination attempt on Obama increase?

Think about it. There have been some RABID Hillary supporters this time around, and some people seem seriously messed up over the primary results. Maybe it's as ridiculous as saying there will be a race riot if Obama loses, but still... I've seen hatred, sarcasm, and sniping from all sides, but I feel the most solid, impenetrable, unreasoning hate from the Hillary supporters who feel cheated by the primary. That hatred will probably just manifest itself in ranting at the dinner table or around the water cooler (even though politics/religion at work should be taboo topics), but some of those people are downright SCARY.
Excuse me...I think we have much more to worry about if McCain does get elected and the same Republican policies of benefiting the rich while neglecting the poor continue.  I lie awake at night worrying about THAT.
“Joey Cheek is by no means an out-of-control radical. He's a very serious, sober, responsible individual, and his support for human rights certainly can't be in any way a detraction from the games.”

But Romney don’t you know there’s oil in Sudan. McCain/Bush/Cheney and you seem to be in a quagmire. Who will get the oil first? Don’t we owe china enough already?

Take as much time off as you need. Peace, I will vote for NOBODY, BUT OBAMA!
NOBODY, BUT OBAMA!

I almost didn't have a respones for anything written here until the very end.  Who cares what Dana Milbanks has to say?  I sure don't care about it.
I dismiss everything he writes if I come across it and on the rare occasions that I watch CNN, should he appear, I will click right on past.  He has not credibility in my opinion.  As a journalist, shouldn't credibility be essensial to a successful career?  The fast bucks he earned will quickly fly away and then he won't have money or credibility.  It didn't have to be that way.
I will not tolerate journalists that lie for and protect the most dangerous and terrifying candidate-John McCain.

The only catharsis I need is Hillary gone, never to be seen on my TV screen again. The woman is so full of herself, up to her eyeballs. Hillary is still out there trying to beat a dead cow back to life, only the cow has shrunk since she saw it last, the tribes have diminished, and her one time followers are now happy to support Obama, she needs to leave them alone to do so. It's time to untie the life ring and let Hillary and her remaining little family of followers drift out over the water and out of sight, maybe China wants Hillary, that would be a good next stop for her, maybe China will let Hillary be President.
Why is there a "Clinton camp" or "team" as it relates to the current presidential race?  The race was supposedly "close but no cigar" for either *Bill or Hillary(let's remember caucus state wins were discounted, some states' numbers were rounded up, Puerto Rico doesn't vote in the general election, etc. etc.,).  Senator Clinton's sole role now is to support the Democratic party and it's chosen candidate zealously and to denounce the inextricably Bush/McCain-like policies-One Team, the Democrats Team and Nominee Obama is the MVP.

*Oops-Sorry Bill-no pun intended!

Obama 08,12
McCain/Lieberman. Yeh, that's the ticket!  Two senile old guys committed to continuing the Bush/Cheney legacy.  What a team.  Vote early and vote often.
WASHINGTON — John McCain's campaign says it is returning tens of thousands of dollars in contributions solicited by a foreign citizen.

The move follows the disclosure that the money was being raised by a Jordanian man who is a business partner of prominent Florida Republican Harry Sargeant III.

The McCain campaign says some of the people solicited by Mustafa Abu Naba'a had no intention of supporting McCain for president.

Campaign spokesman Brian Rogers says "that just didn't sound right to us" so the money is being returned.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ John McCain's campaign began on Thursday to review donations brought in by the prominent head of a Florida oil trading company following disclosures that his business partner, a foreign citizen, also may have engaged in fundraising.

The campaign is looking into hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to make sure that they are appropriate, a spokesman said.

The campaign sent a letter spelling out legal requirements to all donors who sent their contributions through Harry Sargeant III, the finance chairman of the Florida Republican Party
It's illegal for foreigners to contribute their own money to U.S. campaigns.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Sargeant allowed a longtime business partner, Mustafa Abu Naba'a, to bring in some $50,000 in donations in March from members of a single extended family, the Abdullahs, in California, along with several of their friends.

A House committee chairman is looking into Sargeant's defense contracts for shipping fuel to U.S. bases in Iraq as part of a probe into whether contractors are engaging in overcharging.

Sargeant is

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said Mustafa Abu Naba'a is not a bundler for the campaign, although Sargeant is.

"He wasn't registered, and he hasn't contributed," Rogers said of Mustafa Abu Naba'a.

The campaign letter to donors notes that federal law bars contributions from foreign nationals and that donations cannot be reimbursed.

Eight months ago, a top fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, Norman Hsu, was indicted for making contributions to various political candidates in the names of others.

McCain is co-sponsor of the campaign finance reform law that bears his name and he is trying to resolve any questions involving Sargeant.

According to The Times, Abu Naba'a is a dual citizen of Jordan and the Dominican Republic.

Federal election regulations bar foreign nationals from participating in campaign decision-making involving donations.

Regarding donations from the extended Abdullah family in California, some couples contributed thousands of dollars to Clinton, a Democrat, and Rudolph W. Giuliani, a Republican. Other Arab-Americans in California contributed thousands to a longtime friend of Sargeant, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican.
Donna, I just now saw your post about your father. Just want you to know you're in my thoughts. We all look forward to seeing you back here very soon.

Sincerely,
Pat
