McCain's new ad contains dubious claims

From NBC's Mark Murray
The McCain campaign has announced it's running yet another TV ad hitting Obama for his "celebrity" and for wanting to raise taxes.

The campaign says the ad is being cycled into its buy in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia (Northern Virginia), and Wisconsin.

But the ad makes some dubious claims:
1) When it says that Obama voted "to raise taxes on people making just $42,000," that was on a non-binding budget resolution vote that didn't actually raise or lower taxes. From Factcheck.org: "The resolution does not contain a specific provision to raise tax rates, but rather assumes that most of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts expire as scheduled in 2011."

2) According to Obama's economic plan, he would raise taxes only on those making more than $250,000 per year, and would provide tax cuts to those making less than that. Factcheck.org: "Obama has stated repeatedly that his plan would increase taxes only for those making more than $250,000 per year."

The script:
ANNCR: Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough. Obama voted to raise taxes on people making just $42,000.
He promises more taxes on small business, seniors, your life savings, your family. Painful taxes, hard choices for your budget. Not ready to lead. That's the real Obama.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approved this message.

*** UPDATE *** Says Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan in a a statement: "This ad is a lie, and it's part of the old, tired politics of a party in Washington that has run out of ideas and run out of steam. Even though a host of independent, nonpartisan organizations have said this attack isn't true, Senator McCain continues to lie about Senator Obama's plan to give 95% of all families a tax cut of $1,000, and not raise taxes for those making under $250,000 a single dime. The reason so many families are hurting today is because we've had eight years of failed Bush policies that Sen. McCain wants to continue for another four, and that's what Barack Obama will change as President."

And now, the media will give McCain free ad time by parsing the ad over and over on the vaious political shows.  They should simply allude to the ad and its misstatements, then move on to actual news.
I echo the message "when will MSN every take on John McCain?"  If this lying were Obama, he would be crucified and burned at the stake in the press and it would never end.  McBush has gotten away with this stuff way too long.  Is it because he's a doddering old man, senile, has been, or anything like it?  Folks, this old geezer has one finger on the trigger and just can't wait to get to the red phone....know what I mean?  He's dangerous, and we need to get him right where he's asking for it.  He thinks he can do anything just because he was a POW.  Well, here's a bulletin......many more were also.  should we call them all up and ask if they want to be president?  Seems like that's all it takes for the press to crown you.  Bad press to say the least.  Keith Olberman is the only one who has the guts to take this fake on.
McBush = One lie after another... what a disgrace!!!!

Obama '08
I have one plea for your network.  If you are going to continue to allow Mike Barnicle perform, PLEASE somebody teach him how to say "Obama".  It's not Obamer.  I can't tell you how many times I switch channels because I am so tired of his illiterate speech.  Others from the same section of the country have no problem with correctly pronouncing his name.  It may take a little practice, but you can do it!

"McCain's New Ad Contains Dubious Claims"

No! He's got to outright LIE if he want's Bush's job.
McSame is just jealous because he can no longer draw a crowd of more than several.
"Why McCain would be a mediocre president"

Excellent overview of McCain's "Record of Leadership" during his 26 years in office...

'I'm John McCain, and I approve lies.'

--It would be great if those in the media would give an assist to the American people and let us know when something isn't true.
I am sick and tired of the McCain camp and the media insulting the millions of Americans who support Senator Obama.

Implying that the only reason Obama is supported is because of his perceived "celebrity" makes my blood boil.

Obama is reasoned, brilliant and just who this country needs to turn things around.

Of course, he is not perfect .... but damn, America, wake up. This smear campaign is just plain horrible, and the fact that the media is carrying McCain's water is beyond belief.

To my very conservative "frends" in this blog
I'm a liberal, I'm a physician, I'm a Democrat and I pay a bucket load of taxes under my "friends" the Republicans!

I wouldn't believe John McCain if he said "day was light and night is dark"
McCain is going to keep hitting on the message of Obama wanting to raise taxes and not willing to drill for more oil until Obama's campaign hits back and hits back hard.
Come on First Read where is Barack Obama's new ad "Hands."  It is positive ad with a positive message.  John McCain is just lying some more and trying to mislead Americans.  We have been lied to and misled enough by the current administration.  Let us all stand up in November and say Not This Time!
"McCain's ad makes 'dubious' claims"??????  When will the media give up their decades long love affair with the "Maverick" (what a joke!!) and call him on his LIES??  McCain is running the most dishonest campaign ever and the best you can do is call his garbage "dubiuos"?  This is just an attempt to keep McCain's cadre of LOW-INFO voters clueless - because they don't even know what "dubious" means.
MSNBC, this is great to "report" this on a blog, but will your reporters and news division do some real reporting on this?
Apparently I am naive about advertising... I thought there were laws or regulations about blatant false content... how can you so easily put things that are verifiably lies on the air?

What shameful disrespect of Americans... scaring seniors etc ("your life savings") and counting on people being ignorant or scared or both!

How do John McCain and the sleazoids he employs sleep at night?
McCain's scummy ad may very well get him elected, low information voters are numerous, but my question is, what happens when the better informed class loses faith in our leadership? Personally, I don't believe anything the Bush administration says, for obvious reasons, and I wonder what happens if we face a real emergency in the near future and people like me don't respond because they don't trust the government's information? It seems like a recipe for disaster when better educated voters don't trust the national leadership.
McCain is turning into a desperate fool. Is he not taking the problems that we face seriously? How are these tactics supposed to fix our economy or get us out of Iraq? Any confidence that the Republicans are beginning to feel for the general election won't last long. McCain is a disappointment.
