Obama Ohio ad: Is it fair?

Posted: Friday, August 08, 2008 2:08 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The closing of a DHL facility that would cost the town of Wilmington, Ohio, more than 8,000 jobs, has been a hot-button local issue that has crept into the presidential race. On Thursday, McCain met behind closed doors with a group of Wilmington residents at Wilmington College to discuss the situation at the DHL Air Park.

Now the Obama campaign is seizing on McCain's and Campaign Manager Rick Davis' role in helping foreign-owned DHL acquire the space in 2003 with a radio ad running in the crucial swing state of Ohio.

"It was McCain who used his influence in the Senate to help foreign-owned DHL buy a U.S. company and gain control over the jobs that are now on the chopping block in Ohio," an announcer says.

But is this a fair hit? It's true that, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer pointed out on Tuesday, "In 2003, Davis lobbied the Senate to accept the proposal by DHL to buy Airborne Express for $1.05 billion. Airborne Express at the time ran the airport and package-sorting facility in Wilmington."

But is that a smoking gun? Not exactly. The Plain Dealer also pointed out that the acquisition "resulted in expansion, not retraction" and "several Wilmington civic leaders said that what happened in 2003 created an economic gain for their community, lasting several years."

The president of the Ohio AFL-CIO, a union that has endorsed Obama, places the blame squarely on Mccain and Davis. "Those jobs are on the chopping block because Sen. McCain and his campaign were involved in a deal that resulted in control of those positions being shifted to a foreign corporation, and there's no getting around that," Joe Rugola told the Plain-Dealer.

But can McCain and Davis really be held responsible for job cuts five years later after the initial acquisition created growth for the town? And would an American company really have acted any differently if it found a way to cut cost to keep steady or increase profit?

Here's the script:
ANNCR:   July 9.  2008. Portsmouth, Ohio. Here's what John McCain said about DHL’s plans to eliminate 8,200 Ohio jobs.

JOHN MCCAIN (from Ohio town hall):  I gotta look you in the eye and give you straight talk. I don't know if I can stop it or not or if it will be stopped.

ANNCR:  But there’s something John McCain's not telling you: It was McCain who used his influence in the Senate to help foreign-owned DHL buy a U.S. company and gain control over the jobs that are now on the chopping block in Ohio. And that's not all: McCain's campaign manager was the top lobbyist for the DHL deal...helped push it through.  His firm was paid $185,000 to lobby McCain and other Senators. Now 8,200 Ohioans are facing layoffs, and foreign-owned DHL doesn't care.

JOHN MCCAIN (from Ohio town hall): I gotta look you in the eye and give you straight talk.

ANNCR:   John McCain. Same old politics.  Same failed policies.

BARACK OBAMA:  I'm Barack Obama, candidate for President, and I approved this message. Paid for by Obama for America.

Of course it's fair.  Obama can say or do anything and no one will question it.  Are you new?
Is it me or do we see an awful lot of these ads on both sides...you take a small association or role or sentence, take it out of context and make a political ad out of it.  Even as a McCain supporter, I'm not blind to the fact that both sides pull this stunt a lot.

Also, since I didn't get posted on the prior item, do a bit more research on the Tax Policy group mentioned below and you'll find that it's part of the Brookings Institution, who, despite what they may say, has been described by Time, The New York Times, and the LA Times as a liberal think tank.  Just because they say they are non-partisan doesn't make it true.
Georgia- Russia Responses by McCain and Obama:
From A Previous Thread:

Note the difference in the statements made by McCain and Obama regarding the Russian/Georgian issue.  Both call for a ceasefire and for the parties to enter into peaceful talks to resolve the issue. But note at the beginning of McCain’s statement how he accuses Russia of violating Georgia’s boundaries and being the aggressor when no one is yet sure who actually started the hostilities. Some reports state that Georgia was the aggressor and that Russia was reacting to protect its citizens in South Ossetia.  If the U.S. is to expect two parties to respond to calls from the U.S. to end the hostilities we need a President who does not blindly label one the aggressor unless it can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that one is in fact the true aggressor and the other was simply defending itself.

This is an example of McCain’s world (black and white). There has to be fault assigned to someone. Even if McCain cannot prove one way or the other where the fault lies. This is how McCain would handle all of his foreign policy decisions. Black and white, no grey areas, immediate siding with one party or the other. Off the cuff statements that are not productive for a call for diplomacy. Trying to find and assign blame instead of stepping in as an impartial peace maker. Immediately angering one side or the other so calls for a ceasefire go unheeded.  Placing an immediate barrier between the U.S. and one or the other party required to secure a peaceful solution.

If this country elects John McCain look for U.S and Russian relations to quickly deteriorate even lower then what they have already become. McCain will take us back to the days of the cold war and perhaps even beyond. One can talk tough and strongly pursue U.S. policy and U.S. interests with both friend and foe. But one will get nowhere if when such incidents arise we have a President that immediately lays blame (perhaps incorrectly), and muddies up a statement calling for a peaceful solution by alienating one of the parties.

This is why we need Obama. He understands the difference between those times when U.S. aggression might be required versus those times when the U.S. needs to act as a mediator. And no mediator worth their salt starts the process by assigning blame to just one side or the other.  There was no such assignment or inference of blame in Obama’s statement as to who was the bad guy here.  There was a call for a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution. If you were leading the delegation from Russia in any form of cease fire peace talk with Georgia with the U.S. acting as the mediator who would you fear and “not trust” and who would you fear and “trust”. The answer is obvious.
Dear First Read:

When will we get a headline followed by "Is It Fair?" for Senator Obama? McCain is averaging one a day.

And to answer your question, it is 5 years later in Iraq too. Is it fair to hold John McCain responsible for his vote to invade Iraq, or does he get a pass on that too?

What do you suggest the statute of limitations should be on responsibility for your own actions, First Read? 6 months? A year?

I am really getting TIRED of the PREDICTIBLE defending of John McCain that goes on in the corporate media.

If we have to prop John McCain up, remind him what he believes, and give him a do over when he messes up, what really is the point of his canidacy?

Who is really running for President, McCain or corporate America?

Your headline provides a clue - and it's not pretty.
Fantastic Obama, gove them hell!
Ok BO apologists.  Let's hear it, come on.  How are you going to defend Mr. Fresh Different Change now?
If the facts are true, the ad is fair.
Just the fact that McCain so freely associates with lobbyists is bound to raise these questions about him.  If he wants to avoid them, he should stop having such a lobbyist driven campaign.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com/
I gotta be objective - maybe this ad stretches it a bit by saying it's all McCain's fault.  But I can also objectively say that 1) it comes nowhere close to the out-and-out lies being put into the MSM by the McCain campaign, and 2) Even if you can't totally pin the DHL job losses on McCain, you CAN pin them on the poor decision-making and failing policies of the Bush Administration, which McCain thinks we should continue.  So the bottom line is still "You want more job losses and more of the same? Then vote for McCain."

Obama '08
"would an American company really have acted any differently if it found a way to cut cost to keep steady or increase profit?"

maybe, maybe not. History shows American capitalism will cut it's own throat if a few criminals like Cheney make enough money, yet the KNOWN FACT is this:

"In 2003, Davis lobbied the Senate to accept the proposal by DHL to buy Airborne Express for $1.05 billion. Airborne Express at the time ran the airport and package-sorting facility in Wilmington."

OK - right wing - ignore the facts and call Obama a liar.
Have McCain's ads even been true?  McCain drove "fair" right over a cliff with on his double talk/straigh lie express.

Is John McCain up to it? Please review this and think about it......http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/08/mccain-dazed-and-confused_n_117752.html
It's truthful at any rate...We are going to find out that this lobbying situation is just the tip of the iceberg for McCain...

The DNC is going to broil him on this issue...that is why Barack decided to shut out 529's and lobbyists from his side of the aisle this election
It's a million times more fair than the blatant lies that McCain puts out.

Fact: McCain helped DHL acquire Airborne
Fact: Davis lobbied for DHL
Fact: 8,200 jobs are about to be eliminated.
Fact: Republicans in Congress voted against extending jobless benefits.

Fact: Under Republican Rule, the rich get richer and the middle class gets shafted.

Will Ohio vote Republican this November, only if they cannot connect the dots, or only if they feel Republican "values" are more important than Democratic "jobs".  Republican "values" do not put food on the table.

Obama 08
Good grief.  Another example of the unions destroying their own jobs and then trying to blame someone else.
Hey, live by the lobbyist, die by the lobbyist! McCain/Davis '08!
Question: Why didn't you POST the Obama ad here like you did John McCain's ad? Why are McCain's ads ALWAYS posted, and Obama's not so much? (I really would like to know.)

P.S. This is a pretty transparent attempt to create the illusion that the Obama campaign is just as deceptive and the McCain campaign.

What a load of bull.
This ad may be a bit harsher than the realty of what actually happened; however, the bottomline is they were somehow involved and since they love to use broad strokes to paint Obama, I say the ad fits pretty well.
Why haven't you devoted this much ink to checking the lies in all of McCain's ads?
Is this a fair hit?  In the world of politics it's fair.

At least it's not an outright lie like Obama caused high gas prices or Obama's tax policy all increase taxes for everyone.
Why have you chosen to run John McCain's new attack ad for free buy you haven't shown us the ad that Barack Obama will be running during the Olympics?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/08/obama-releases-his-olympi_n_117699.html
I can't believe you're questioning the fairness of this ad.  At least it's accurate, unlike the trash that McCain is putting out there.
Yes its fair because it the truth! This is a real issue that affect America Jobs. McCain has no ideal about how to deal with the economic problems of the country! People of Ohio should be supporting Obama becasue he will work to keep jobs in this country and not support trade deals that reward compaines for send jobs overseas!

Obama/Hagel 08 Real Unity
YES! Yes, Senator McCain can be held accountable for the results of the policies that he backed while in the Senate!  That's like saying, "Should the Republicans who lied us into war with Iraq be held accountable for that quagmire five years later when the initial invasion benefitted the country by getting rid of Saddam?"  The answer is YES!

McCain knew what was going to happen if you provide clearance for a foreign company to buy another company that had pre-existing facilities in another town.  Now, certainly you can't fault DHL for making a profit.  But the people of Willmington can ABSOLUTELY consider the fact that McCain was instrumental in getting the company to a point where they could fire them into account when they go to the polls.

Policy has consequences.  The current state of the nation is a direct result of conservative policies being implemented for the last 8 years.

Obama has taken a page right out of McCain's book!
Is it fair? You would be concerned about an ad being fair to McCain when he is doing all that he can to continue the reprehensible Republican practice of 'swiftboating'? Give me a break! It seems that since the McCain camp believes that "all is fair in love and war",  they have declared 'war' on Obama and anything goes.
Yes - this is fair, Barack Obama ads explained to others what John McCain failed to do - doing his straight talk.

Unlike John McCain's ads - Barack Obama's ad is factual and not exaggerated.

The issue as I see it in this article is Job Loss - not the state of that local economy.

Barack Obama's ad is Spot on.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Good! After seeing how Obama's been on the defensive, let's see how McCain will respond to these charges. As for how McCain (and Davis) can be held responsible, they obviously didn't make any decisions to close down the DHL Air Park facility, but I can see them giving promises and false hopes (while Mr. Davis collected his money and McCain some future campaign capital favors) to the citizens here. Look, both men were involved in this deal. McCain's running for President, and Davis is one of his right hand men. Fair or not, that's politics. Ask Obama about the charges that have been leveled against him, "fair or not".
It's been a good week.  First Read is trying to do better at fact-finding the truth.  People are complimenting First Read for doing Fact-Check. This is good.

For all Obama supporters, there is a great article posted on Huffington Post by Mark Nicholas on the popular vote v electoral college (Why the media badly needs a history lesson).  I strongly urge everyone to read it. Chuck Todd knows this information as I have heard him allude to the significance of a 3 to 5 point lead in the polls.  However MSNBC producers of Hardball, Race to the White House, Verdict, Gregory, Barnakle, Matthews really need to read this article.  Pat Buchanan and Joe Scar... wouldn't get it if they had a tutor.  Obama's national lead has been very stable (3 to 6 points) and these numbers will translate to a significant electoral win for Obama.
\huffingtonpost.com/mark-nicholas/popular-vote-v-electoral_b_117525.htlm
Obama: Have you flip-flopped on your different kind of politics? Seems so.
MSNBC is the LAST PLACE that I would consider as having any NEWS thatnis fair and balanced.  News commentators are just autotonatons as they read from monitors and don't have any real unbiased thoughts of their own Why have them at all all we need is just holograms
Hey McBush - don't sling crap unless you want it slung back at you.
But is this a fair hit? But can McCain and Davis really be held responsible for job cuts five years later after the initial acquisition created growth for the town? And would an American company really have acted any differently if it found a way to cut cost to keep steady or increase profit?
__________

Yes it's a fair hit.  Everything in that ad is 100% true.  Obama isn't stating anything but fact and leaving it up to the listener to make a decision based on those facts.

McCain on the other hand puts out ads full of complete lies.
And is mccain's lie-filled ad fair?  Why don't you ask it that way?
You saying there's a warranty on your decisions there pilgrim? Look here Johnny straight talk, either your judgements good 6 yrs. later or it isn't.
Is it fair to hold me accountible for a mortgage decision I made 6 yrs. ago. Is it fair to hold a man's sins against him after serving 6 yrs. in the pokey out of a 10 yr. sentence? Is it fair to take credit for a surge when the decision was made 6 yrs. ago by a younger fella who looked an awful lot like you my friend - to go into the sands of Iraq?
...Well, yer damn right it is! - Now if you'll step aside Johnny boy, the good men and women of this great land will be cleaning up your mess.
It's certainly more fair than Mccain's most recent ad that lies about Obama's tax plan.
Same Ol' McCain.  Some Ol' Obama.  I am truly sick of both of these guys, their ads and their cheating ways. It is truly quite frustrating to watch the American political system come to this.

Let's start the campaigns over with new people.
I suppose what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Whether a fair hit or not it seems the Obama campaign has decided to act in some form of retaliation to the lies and misrepresented Ads that the McCain camp has been publishing. Like MvcCains Ad that Obama wants to raise taxes on those making $42,000 when Obama's position has been clear. Which is to raise taxes on only those making over $250,000. So is the Ad fair you ask. Who cares. McCain wants to play this kind of game so be it. The thing about it is that at least a portion of the Obama Ad about McCain and Davis is true. None of the Mccain Ad about Obama is true.

Funny how you guys say that's politics when Mccain runs a misleading Ad. Then you ask when is Obama going to begin hitting back? Is he too weak? Then when Obama hits back with an Ad that is at least partially true versus that of McCains which is an all out lie, now let's see how you react. Will you now blast Obama for being too agressive? You know, no matter which way Obama goes he gets criticized. Too weak - too agressive, too Black - not Black enough, presumptuous versus cool and confident, too intelligent - not enough detail, plays the race card - tries to improve race relations, too left - too moderate, etc., etc.
Why haven't you devoted this much ink to checking the lies in all of McCain's ads?
FAIR!!!!  Now you'r concerned about fair? Where have you been during all the sleazball lie's McGoofy has been spewing? You guy's are a real piece of work!
Oh yeah, ask "is it fair" when Obama and camp put it out there. But what about all the lies McSurge and crew has spread? Have you questioned that or do you agree?

Not this time McSurge, not this time.
Come on, guys.  This is an election year, when the gloves come off and facts are enhanced.  This is the equivalent of McCain stating that Obama is the world's greatest celebrity. Neither claim can be substantiated, but the Press will make as much hay out of them as possible.  We're definitely in the Dog Days.

Video: Dems push Ohio job loss on McCain. OhioDems attack McCain

straw poll on another network shows again this week mccain 70% obama 30%.

=====================================================

That is an AOL poll, and AOL users are in a league of their own.  The Revolution will not be an AOL keyword, and AOL users will not be deciding this election.
FR, That's how they roll...
They offer you a small nugget of opportunity for short term gain, (the acquisition "resulted in expansion, not retraction" and "several Wilmington civic leaders said that what happened in 2003 created an economic gain for their community, lasting several years.") Like five years...

This makes me think of other McCain plans for short term gain that will quickly dry up. Like, Gas Taxes, Off-Shore Drilling, and let's not forget...THE SURGE!!!

These people have no plan or care for the American People.  Just more War...My Friends
Dom, it's a good post except that saying that an American company would do the same thing is unfair speculation. When you go to other countries they complain about US companies because the companies invest then leave without any regard for the local consequences. The same is true of foreign companies here. There can be no political pressure on a foreign company who pulls the plug without factoring in the human cost. Not to mention foreign profits go back to other countries instead of staying here.
Are you kidding me. This is so much more subtle and on teh dot than what mccain has been saying about obama.
Rick Davis lobbied for DHL...
McCain and Davis were involved in that deal...
8,000 jobs will be lost because of the deal...
That's it.
That's all the ad said. And it's true.
Barack isn't playing negativly... he is just stating the facts. It's not his fault that the facts are bad for 8,000 Ohio workers that will soon be out of jobs.
It is what it is....
No need to speculate anything...
Depends on your definition of 'fair'.  What would be interesting is to see if there are any incentives or credits being given for those jobs to ship out.  That has been the norm in these situations.  Carly Fiorina did it at HP.  Incenting companies to send the jobs overseas is the part of the Corporate Welfare program that has many appalled.  I do not have knowledge in this incident; but nothing surprises me anymore.
I think it is great that you are looking at ads from both sides and parsing them. It's about time someone did.

That said, the difference between the McCain Ad mentioned earlier on First Read and the Obama Ad here is that everything in the Obama ad is true. The question is whether or not it is fair to blame McCain for the loss of jobs - and the people at whom this ad is directed can make that determination.

The McCain ad, on the other hand, made some blatantly false statements (Obama voted to raise taxes on people who make $40K / year...for example, is not true)
Is it fair? The association may not be a "smoking gun" - but at least there is an essential element of truth - unlike like the outright lies coming from the McCain camp.

Sorry - I'm not feeling too sorry for McCain right now.
