Veepstakes: Texting the announcement

Posted: Monday, August 11, 2008 9:16 AM by Mark Murray

A little after 6:00 pm ET last night, NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum reports that this message went out from Obama’s text-messaging service: "Barack will announce his VP candidate choice through txt msg between now & the Conv. Tell everyone to text VP to 62262 to be the first to know! Please forward."

Per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says this does NOT mean Obama has made his pick -- only that when he does he will announce via text.

USA Today has some pretty good vetting-problem bullet points on a few candidates, including Kaine, Bayh, Pawlenty and Cantor.

McCain "loves Lieberman. And he is on the [short]list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken. The first rule is, don't take someone who costs you votes," an adviser told The Financial Times. "Conservatives would be p---ed as hell - I think you would have a revolt, but sometimes John does what John wants to do."

More compiled by NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger and Carrie Dann...
REPUBLICANS: Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and McCain will campaign together today and tomorrow, after dining together Sunday night. McCain even landed at “Ridge Field” in Erie, Pa., the former governor’s hometown.

Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission touts Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney and Eric Cantor, while saying Ridge would be a “catastrophe.”

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will travel to Detroit this week to persuade General Motors to keep a plant in Shreveport alive.

DEMOCRATS: Obama and Bayh are co-authoring a bill on fatherhood -- the Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families Act. "It would provide job training, remove marriage penalties from the tax code, and support domestic violence prevention efforts."

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, fresh from vacation, offered a few veep-spec soundbites to reporters at the annual meeting of the Southern Governor's association this weekend. "I've always thought it was kind of a long shot, or not all that likely."

I love it. Obama is brillant to announce the vp via text message. The suspense will continue until he announces. I hope he announces during the convention because it will not allow enough time for McCain to change his veep to counteract Obama.
I hope McCain picks someone good.  He has Obama on the run and it would be a shame to screw up when the American people are finally figuring out what Obama is really about; just another tax and spend liberal.
Barack is doing a VP annoucement kind of like they vote for the American Idol. Then he wonders why he gets the tag of 'Celebrity Candidate'.
So, we'll be the first to know... when it happens... which is not yet... so hurry up and wait.

...and Lord knows McCain needs all the help he can get!
"...I think you would have a revolt, but sometimes John does what John wants to do."

Not lately, of course, he has become the Bush 3rd Term Poster Geezer.
i know, I got the texting announcement and I cant wait to be one of the first to know.  Its good hes doing it through text message because now people are going to be signing up for the text messages. Can you guys please tone down the size of the font, its annoying?

Obama and Bayh offering a bill removing marriage penalties from the tax code strikes me as a bigger thing than his text messaging the name of his running mate.

But then that's just me. I would have preferred a weekend of examing how the candidate's responded to the situation between Russia and Georgia than coverage of an affair had by a former candidate.
Come Barack, take this presidental thing seriously.
Yeah, McCain pick Lieberman...that would be great!  Anyone remember the terrible job Lieberman did in the debate with Cheney?  Of course, given his history, maybe he was hoping that the Republicans would win.
I'm sorry, but this gimmick seems SO stupid...

I'm sure FR will text me too - and I don't have to be hounded by texts requesting donations.

IS there someone "good" on the Repub side, Jer?  Anyone that meets your high standards?
Hey Chuck and all,
I can't read First Read anymore since you changed it.  PLEASE....go back to regular text.
McCain "loves Lieberman. And he is on the [short]list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken.

Yeah, he did - he said was a Dem, which is a LIE.
I'm signed up on home and work computer!  Can't wait. pulling for Kaine, but happy with decision no matter what!

I read recently that Mccain is running a half-off sale.  Only 4 years instead of 8.  That means his merchandise is not selling.  Keep up the negative attacks, it just fires up the base, we give more money!
Lieberman is himself an embarrassment and should run for the Knesset because I doubt Connecticut will ever elect him for anything again.  If Bush/Cheney pal Putin keeps the war going in Georgia I wouldn't be surprized to see Obama pick Biden...and soon.  Jerry in Corpus never got a "liberal" helping of ice cream from his mommy and doesn't like the word so much he's skewed.  Vote Obama!  not for an angry, careless, immoral old man with his navy hat stapled to his head.
what a crock, what next, vote by text? people want you personally to announce, with pride and conviction .  McCain camp will be all over this , and will show how weak obama is!  I am getting really disappointed with obama, Stand front and center! if not, you will lose lots of voters by your invasiveness!
Obama Bayh

would be really dumb...

he does not have the foreign policy gravitas that Obama HAS to have going into this election.  Period.
McCain's latest ad begins: "Life in the spotlight must be grand, but for the rest of us times are tough."  First, times are far from tough for John and Cindy; I understand they own nine homes.  Barack and Michelle own one, like most of us.

Second, this is just one more of the Paris/Britney baseless ads; Obama has never met these women and has nothing to do with them. Obviously Mccain has nothing constructive to propose, so he stoops to this nonsense.  Ask yourself: Is this guy presidential material?

The ad then pretends that Obama will raise taxesfor all, even though Obama has repeatedly stated he will CUT taxes for those earning less than $250,000, and will raise taxes only on those earning more than that.

McCain would continue the Bush policy of tax breaks for the wealthy; Obama would discontinue that.
Lie---berman embarresses himself every thime he opens his mouth!
