Obama ad: Buy American? Not McCain

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Harley riders favor McCain, right (as evidenced by his stop at Sturgis)? The Obama campaign wants those riders -- and American workers -- to reconsider.

In a new radio ad, called "Motorcycle," Obama camp asserts that despite his Sturgis speech, McCain doesn't care about Harleys or American manufacturers.

"But when it comes to his record, American-made motorcycles like Harleys don’t matter to John McCain," a somber announcer says. "Back in Washington, McCain opposed a requirement that the government buy American -- made motorcycles."

The ad takes it a step further... "And he said all Buy American provisions were quote 'disgraceful.' Surprised? You shouldn’t be. This is the same John McCain who supported  billions in tax breaks for companies who ship American jobs overseas."

Hard to tell the truthfulness. It'll have the fact checkers working.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign passes along the following research backing up the ad:

This is one of several examples the campaign passes along of McCain being against "Buy American" provisions:
- "Lastly, I am also disappointed that the bill once again this year contains a Department-wide 'Buy America' requirement, and specific language directing the Secret Service to purchase American-made motorcycles. I firmly object to all 'Buy America' restrictions, as they represent gross examples of protectionist trade policy. From a philosophical point of view, I oppose such policies because free trade is an important element in improving relations among all nations, which then improves the security of our Nation. Furthermore, as a fiscal conservative, I want to ensure our Government gets the best deal for taxpayers and with a 'Buy American' restriction that cannot be guaranteed." [Congressional Record, 7/14/05]

The Obama camp also backs up its claim that McCain "supported  billions in tax breaks for companies who ship American jobs overseas" with the following:
- McCain voted against an amendment to repeal tax incentives for domestic companies that move their manufacturing plants to offshore locations.  The amendment would have used the resulting revenue to reduce the federal deficit by $3.2 billion from 2006 to 2010. [SCR 18, Vote 63, 3/17/05; Failed 40-59: R 0-54; D 40-4; I 0-1]

- McCain voted against partially repealing a tax deferral regulation for U.S. multinational companies by requiring those companies to pay federal income taxes on foreign factories when goods are re-imported back into the United States. Employers also would be required to notify employees and the Labor Department when jobs will be moved offshore, including the number of jobs affected, the relocation destination of those jobs and the reason for the relocation. [S 1637, Vote 83, 5/5/04; Passed 60-39: R 51-0; D 8-39; I 1-0]

- McCain voted against amendment to create a reserve fund that would allow increases of up to $24 billion for fiscal 2005 through 2009 for employment initiatives including tax credits for companies that create new U.S.-based manufacturing jobs and small businesses that provide health care coverage. [SCR 95, Vote 41, 3/11/04, Failed: 41-53: R 0-49; D 40-4; I 1-0]

Part of Obama's trade platform, he has said, is to give tax breaks to companies that keep their operations in the U.S. He has said he would try to amend NAFTA to include stricter labor standards.

McCain is a free trade advocate.

We will update with McCain camp's response.

Countdown to Democratic Convention
August 25-28, 2008, Denver, CO

A Moment In Time-

To Democrats, Republicans, Independents:

I’m not sure what the average age is of all you guys who post here. However, if you remember back in July 1969, you must recall the pride you felt as an American when we landed on the moon. Who could ever forget that night with Walter Conkrite, who was almost speechless when the words “the eagle has landed” was broadcast all over the world. It is one of the most historical nights in our nation’s history.

I think August 28th will be one of those nights as well for our country. When Senator Obama walks to the stage for his acceptance speech, this will once again be a moment which will show how our country is continuing to progress ahead in this new century.

So I hope regardless of what party you may belong to, or which candidate you may have wanted to win, that you all take a moment to recognize the significance of this election. And I hope as well that we all will take a moment to reflect on all those who in the 1960’s especially, sacrificed their lives to make this happen.

This election is as much about us as it is about Senator Obama and what we the people have fought to accomplish and will continue to accomplish. That is what the United States of America is all about.

In 2008, we’re passing the torch. And what better candidate to pass it to?

P.S. - Be proud of yourselves, Hillary & Bill Clinton supporters. Very proud. You made this happen.

It’s going to be quite a moment for our nation.
Why isn't First Read posting anything mentioning how McCain's speech on Georgia had sentences taken out of Wikipedia word-for-word?
Does quoting Wikipedia on a foreign policy issue show experienced leadership?  If Sen. Obama had made a similar move, it would be a huge story.  Why isn't the press asking serious questions about John McCain's leadership?  He has essentially the same foreign and economic policy positions as Bush, and he has shown a similar failure to choose tough executive decisions over loyalty to friends (eg. Charlie Black, Phil Gramm, and Randy Scheunemann).  Sen. McCain needs to explain how the same morally and politically bankrupt policies that have run our country into the ground over the past eight years is a remotely acceptable plan for moving forward over the next four.
"Hard to tell the truthfulness."

lol

So it matters if its truthful now? When the McCain campaign releases their lie filled ads, you post them in an easy to play format - with a script!

Then you say "Even though it's not true, many Americans will believe it, so its a good ad."

WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD?

Are battleground states raking in the ad money or what? I can't remember there being THIS many ads in a presidential campaign before September (then again I'm only 25 so...).
Good retort Obama!  Only problem is that these Harley riders are a bunch of red necked racists and no matter what, they won't vote for you. I don't agree with it, but lets face facts here...there's no way you were going to rely on the Harley Rider vote to get you into the White House.
One other thing!  Using a Radio Ad to get to Harley Riders was not the wise thing to do...they don't listen to the radio while they are riding their bikes.  Better off using TV ads with closed captioning they can watch and read while having their beer at the local Road House....assuming they can even read.
Dang! If this ad turns out to be accurate - it's great!  This is an issue that EVERY AMerican I know - converative or liberal - really cares about.

Go Obama!
Isn't this the same John McCain who blocked an Air Force contract to replace a fleet of refueling tankers and allowed the contract to go to Airbus/EADS?

Isn't this the same John McCain who then received $12K in campaign contributions from EADS' North American executives?

Hmmm......
Oh, it be true, alright!
Dishonest John is no friend to the American worker. He has regularly supported bills that ship jobs overseas.
yeah I heard this ad, I think its pretty good. i think pointing out how mccain effects voters in their particular states is a extremely good strategy

No way real men vote for Obama. Not happening.
50K bikers throttling up and rooting McCain on... and this is the backdoor bandit they are backing?

I hope they do some research before casting there vote.
I like the idea:  Targets, certainly, Appalachian-Americans, but subtly reminds every woman voter in America of his, "Honey, show 'em whatya got" reference to his plasticized spouse.  And, probably, makes your average Harley rider at least maybe stop and reconsider--but I wouldn't bet on them much.
I believe First Read should do a time line on one of John Mccains many affairs, the Edwards deal is becoming some what stale. We will all be waiting First Read, get out there and dig up some smut on your buddy Mccain just one time.
Obama passing out free tire gauges to the Harley crowd? They're not that easily bought off Barack, but I guess you may get a point or two for trying.
Will Obama be able to attract those folks in the fall? I just read that Rev. Wright is publishing a book that's coming out in October. What will that do to those voters?

http://www.governmentalityblog.com/my_weblog/2008/08/winning-georgia.html
Well, at least the Obama camp is stating facts, unlike McSurge and crew.

Not this time McSurge, not this time!
PS - How much money did Barbie make when Anheuser-Busch ceased to be an American company when it was sold to the Belgians?
Now it is time for FR to question the fairness of this ad.
Looks like Barack still doesn't understand the concept of a global economy. The way to keep manufacturing jobs in this country is to make a better product for the right cost. That means low government regulations and taxes Barack. Barack doesn't seem to understand that. Most socialists don't.
This ad appears to be legit.

Truthfulness means nothing when the words mean nothing.  It wasn't motorcycles, it was planes, and the Boeing contract contained so much pork that it WAS disgraceful and a waste of taxpayer dollars.  By the way, I know what song Obama should take as his campaign theme song: The Beegees "It's Only Words", (and words are all I have to take your heart away), to be replaced by "and words are all I have to tax you wealth away."
McCain is pro NAFTA and CAFTA.  McCain gives tax breaks to companies that ship job overseas. USA is becoming a Third World Country because of corrupt leaders like McLame.

Hard-Hitting Ads Go Up Against McCain

Too bad they didn't run the ad before Sturgis---the sob would never have made it out alive! In any case, it'll be interesting to see what Mcshame has to say for himself if the fact-checking finds it's all true...
So when did the democrats have a bill to try and take over American motorcycle companies? They always say the bill is one thing and it's really another. Kind of like these civil rights groups shilling for predatory lenders.

Obama only cares anout business when the reason is that he is running for President.

The reason McCain opposed the bill to buy American only is that John McCain believes in a free market, where Obama favors a closed society.
That's the ticket
Talk ECONOMIC issues

Nashville fan noted the NPR report this morning that A MAJORITY of US Corporations pay NO CORPORATE TAXES !!

Yet McCain snivels that the corporate tax rate is TOO HIGH ??

Talk Social Security, Barack

And talk about a 'Woman's right to choose'
Let's GET HTIS GOING !!

PS
Are the Russians 'water obarding' their prisoners ?
Are THEY putting prisoners into 'stress positions' ?
Did they discover a letter stating that Georgia wanted to buy 'yellow cake' uranium from Niger ?
(ther's a letter like that for sale nowadays... just call 1-800-CIA-LIES)

McCain voted against a Bill to require the U.S. Government to buy only Harleys? That's it. The man certainly should have his head examined and perhaps even a pre-fontal labotomy performed. To all Harley riders and lovers and to those Harley workers in York, PA where my bike was built - the truth comes out! Vote Obama!
I hope the message that McCain is wrong for this country gets out.  However, i remain doubtful.  The only reason, and I mean the only reason this race is close is because Obama is half black! Yeah, I said it.  If he were white, he would be polling 20 points ahead.  Man, I wish we lived in a society where race didnt matter but the reality of it is, we don't.
Are you kidding, It sounds right to me. Where are all these American made products, gone, replaced by trash from China. We have so many issues in this country right now, Energy, Wars, Health care, Corruption, Corporate greed.   ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID.
If any of you working class folks out there vote for McCain you are simply fools. The republicans are out for the same thing they been after for twenty five years. privatize everything, make a lot of money for those who already have money.  just a typical old white woman from S.C.

Instead of 'Motorcycle', I would call this ad 'Check... and Mate'.
One acronym:  DHL

One word:  Ohio

One number, three words:  8,000 AMERICAN jobs lost

Four words:  McCain and his lobbyist

Need I say more?
In 2003, Sen. McCain authored an amendment undermining “Buy American” rules requiring U.S. military equipment, defense systems and components to be manufactured in the United States. By allowing the Department of Defense to purchase American military equipment from foreign companies, the McCain amendment laid the groundwork for the Air Force’s decision to outsource the production of refueling tankers for the American military. The amendment passed along party lines with Kansas Senators Roberts and Brownback voting in its favor. [Vote 191, 5/21/03]

There... took me 2 minutes to find the information.  It's 100% true.  McCain undermined "Buy American" and is largely why Boeing might get screwed out of that big contract that Airbus originally won.
that is a tuff ad. It is true because McCain has agreed to continue providing tax breaks to companies that send our jobs overseas. He also supports free trade acts like Columbia that will send our jobs overseas. He voted for a bill that sent 8,000 DHL jobs from Ohio overseas. It can be surmised that McCain does not care about american manufacturing jobs.
Keep hitting John Mcdoogle hard Obama. He is not with working Americans. Keep it up.
McCain also helped the Air Force refueling tanker contract go to Airbus and not Boeing. We should never outsource our military equipment to foreign companies.
The new wave of polls has Obama polling strongly in red states, ahead in Colorado and Iowa and tied in Virginia. Full roundup: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/08/11/monday-polls-obama-ahead-in-co-ia/
Why isn't First Read posting anything mentioning how McCain's speech on Georgia had sentences taken out of Wikipedia word-for-word?

==============

Probably because it's a lie fabricated by the mindless lefties in the country.
I ride a Harley, and I'd never vote for McCain. (Diebold will do it for me.) He also spoke at a few black organizations - I don't think you reported that "all blacks" were going to vote for him.
Note how when Obama is not around (vacationing) the press seem bored with little else to do but report on the Clintons or that idiotic McCain campaign. The press can't wait for Obama to end his vacation so they will have someone exciting to report on again. Kind of makes Obama an exciting and news worthy  celebrity does it not? The kind of person we would like to see in the White House instead of McCain who puts everyone to sleep.
Don Haynes, Lincoln NE  said:
"No way real men vote for Obama. Not happening. "

Ok Don, so why don't you tell us what a "real" man is?
If Obama is so "Buy America" why the heck does his ad showing in Florida show buys building America with imported tools--user an American built nail gun! But oh yeah, the person who did the campaign ad probably never worked outside with their hands on a manual labor job.
The ad is about JOBS, Harley-Davidson drivers. It is playing in in WI, where they make Harley's. And those people are not happy about losing gov. contracts.

In most cases, the having domesticly produced equiptment for the military, is just good sense. It may suddenly not be in another country's "best strategic interest" to provide parts, at some point.

There are exceptions. We needed the mine resistance vehicle, and had nothing domestically, that could be produced in less than five years.

That's enough...not much more needed.
Well, thanks Pat, for lumping all Harley riders into one category.  Your local Harley rider today is more likely to be a professional class working individual who can most certainly read and knows what you are posting here is untrue. Maybe your should read what you post before you hit the Submit button. Pathetic.
Hey Pat, you make a good point but the "Big Picture" here is that something as American as the H-D motorcycle is something John Sydney McCain III thinks would not be the "best deal for taxpayers". This is not just about the redneck riders but all of the middle-class, middle age riders who could not afford the H-D when they were young. Seen "Wild Hogs"? No? I didn't either but I heard it portrayed some of the feelings of middle-ages guys hitting the open road on the H-D motorcycle.
The median age of the H-D rider is 46.7 sand the median income is $83,000 so the target group is obvious.
Bottom line is this is an American made product that McCain said was not good enough before yet he panders to the biker element for political points. Average H-D  riders should be able to see through his buffalo chip.
I came across this on the Huffington Post, do we really want McCain to be our next president? My answer is NO!!!!!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/drew-westen/catching-the-wrong-john-w_b_118064.html
Obama just lost whatever small chance he had of getting my vote.  The Harley is a perfect example of why "buy American" doesn't work.  When American companies make quality products - as they do in everything from airplanes to computer chips - the world buys them.  When they make crap like SUVs and Harleys, whose only appeal is to a few lard-gutted wannabees seeking a mechanical substitute for the manhood they never had... Well, they sell to their customer base, and the rest of us look at them with contempt.

Let Harley-Davidson figure out how to make a good motorcycle - heck, let them figure out how to make a muffler - and I might buy their products.  But I'll buy it because it's a quality product that I want, not because of misguided patriotism.
