Obama ad: Buy American? Not McCain

Harley riders favor McCain, right (as evidenced by his stop at Sturgis)? The Obama campaign wants those riders -- and American workers -- to reconsider.

In a new radio ad, called "Motorcycle," Obama camp asserts that despite his Sturgis speech, McCain doesn't care about Harleys or American manufacturers.

"But when it comes to his record, American-made motorcycles like Harleys don’t matter to John McCain," a somber announcer says. "Back in Washington, McCain opposed a requirement that the government buy American -- made motorcycles."

The ad takes it a step further... "And he said all Buy American provisions were quote 'disgraceful.' Surprised? You shouldn’t be. This is the same John McCain who supported  billions in tax breaks for companies who ship American jobs overseas."

Hard to tell the truthfulness. It'll have the fact checkers working.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign passes along the following research backing up the ad:

This is one of several examples the campaign passes along of McCain being against "Buy American" provisions:
- "Lastly, I am also disappointed that the bill once again this year contains a Department-wide 'Buy America' requirement, and specific language directing the Secret Service to purchase American-made motorcycles. I firmly object to all 'Buy America' restrictions, as they represent gross examples of protectionist trade policy. From a philosophical point of view, I oppose such policies because free trade is an important element in improving relations among all nations, which then improves the security of our Nation. Furthermore, as a fiscal conservative, I want to ensure our Government gets the best deal for taxpayers and with a 'Buy American' restriction that cannot be guaranteed." [Congressional Record, 7/14/05]

The Obama camp also backs up its claim that McCain "supported  billions in tax breaks for companies who ship American jobs overseas" with the following:
- McCain voted against an amendment to repeal tax incentives for domestic companies that move their manufacturing plants to offshore locations.  The amendment would have used the resulting revenue to reduce the federal deficit by $3.2 billion from 2006 to 2010. [SCR 18, Vote 63, 3/17/05; Failed 40-59: R 0-54; D 40-4; I 0-1]

- McCain voted against partially repealing a tax deferral regulation for U.S. multinational companies by requiring those companies to pay federal income taxes on foreign factories when goods are re-imported back into the United States. Employers also would be required to notify employees and the Labor Department when jobs will be moved offshore, including the number of jobs affected, the relocation destination of those jobs and the reason for the relocation. [S 1637, Vote 83, 5/5/04; Passed 60-39: R 51-0; D 8-39; I 1-0]

- McCain voted against amendment to create a reserve fund that would allow increases of up to $24 billion for fiscal 2005 through 2009 for employment initiatives including tax credits for companies that create new U.S.-based manufacturing jobs and small businesses that provide health care coverage. [SCR 95, Vote 41, 3/11/04, Failed: 41-53: R 0-49; D 40-4; I 1-0]

Part of Obama's trade platform, he has said, is to give tax breaks to companies that keep their operations in the U.S. He has said he would try to amend NAFTA to include stricter labor standards.

McCain is a free trade advocate.

We will update with McCain camp's response.

Sen. Obama understands that getting the right price has to include a decent standard wage for the blue collar worker whether in the Us or overseas and that unless we ask that these workers have some kind of medical or workers compensation we will continue to have hunan rights issues.
We can not effect everyone and certainly not instantly, we can only begin a process that may inform and educate.
I know that I would very much like to be rich, it is probably not in the cards, I can accept that. We are human beings on what is be coming a fragile planet, we should start considering that having and making money is useless if Mother Nature's decides to send you a BILL.
Hey Harley, who makes global trade safe and efficient?
and therefore profitable? the u.s. navy keeps the sea lanes open and the pirates at bay. seems to me we are subsidizing our own demise. no?
If you hate your country-if you want to do the bidding of our enemies-there is absolutely NOTHING you can do that is more effective in undermining it than to actually PAY to move is manufacturing jobs off-shore. This is dispicable! It is not a question of losing a competitive battle to build better products cheaper-it's taking the hard earned money of the American Taxpayer and applying directly to the bottom-line of a foreign-based multi-national to allow them the ability to cut the guts out of our American workforce. McCain, yet another underachieving brat of another Washington poll is a clone of W. He wears the costume well, but he hates everything that built America, and NOTHING shows it better than these votes. Not only that-but he also voted against the Wellstone amendment that would have required at least 50% of military goods be manufactured in this country-every single R senator but one thought it would be a great idea to ship more military manufacturing off-shore. What vermin!
One other thing!  Using a Radio Ad to get to Harley Riders was not the wise thing to do...they don't listen to the radio while they are riding their bikes.  Better off using TV ads with closed captioning they can watch and read while having their beer at the local Road House....assuming they can even read.

Study shows average cycle owner is 45 and makes over $55K per year.  Why are you are making such a nasty, untrue statement about a whole group of people?  And you want us to believe that you, Obama and the likes are going to be inclusive?
is anyone going to do there job over at the News Hole?

five days have passed and not a peep to be read.
So, unlike McCain's outright lies in his TV ads about Obama's tax proposals (which have gone largely unchallenged in the major media), you're fact-checking Obama's ads… and it turns out they're true!
"No way real men vote for Obama. Not happening.

Don, I just checked. I still have all of my equipment and as a matter of fact used it this morning on my wife. Everything worked. Wife smiling as she left for work. As for me, I will be down at Obama headquarters tonight working the phones and in your honor, I will have em flog the old visa for another $25.00. You people are getting expensive. Glad Scarborough's off this week. HE's costing me a fortune.
There used to be a time when Americans wanted to be judged on merit, when we felt assured that jobs would be available here because we were the best at doing the work.  Now, we want to keep "American jobs" because we think we're entitled to them, regardless of whether someone overseas can perform the same job better and cheaper.  We need to return to striving for American excellence, rather than pandering to American entitlement.
Why are we not tearing into John McCain for being SO presumptuous in addressing Russia about Georgia. Had Obama spoke to the leader of another country in that way before his inaugoration the press would throw the book at him.
If we get stuck with this idiot, it will be the fault of the media.
Pull your heads out of your McCains and get to work!
Looks like Barack still doesn't understand the concept of a global economy. The way to keep manufacturing jobs in this country is to make a better product for the right cost. That means low government regulations and taxes Barack. Barack doesn't seem to understand that. Most socialists don't.

True.  And, you'd think that as a "citizen of the world" he would get it.
If bikers and stock car enthusiasts and the Wrestlemania addicts and bowlers want to vote for someone like themselves..........well, sorry folks, you'll just have to write someone in.  Maybe your biker club president, because John McCain is about as elitist as you can get.  His pals are lobbyists and corporate big shots who'd sneer at your ilk, despite the fact McBlinky politics like he's one of you....which means you're Americans first.  That leaves Obama, Barr, Paul or Nader.  Oh, I know you'll probably vote for the crazy old man because he's got that navy ball cap glued to his head but count on it, he'll be worse than Bush.  This vet is voting Obama.
Real Harley riders fill their tires w/ Nitrogen.  And BTW we like to keep our tires inflated properly for safety as well so welcome REAL WORLD suggestions from a smart person, unlike the old coot McWorse.
Did you notice that each of these bills had BILLIONS attached to them? Perhaps, McCain's response will be that there is no money to fund those bills.  Interesting, though, on another post this a.m. people were going after McCain for being pro business but if you believe this post he's anti business.  Which is it Obamatots?
Neither Party or candidate will attempt to fix anything. Both parties are only concered with how much PORK the can steal. Nothing will change until the 2 party system is destroyed and the electoral is abolished. Direct Democracy is our only hope or our country will vanish in the next 100 years.
I don't think labeling folks "a bunch of red necked racists" adds anything of value to the discussion.
