Republicans cross over for Obama

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Alex Wall
The Obama campaign hopes to attract hundreds of thousands of Republicans to support the Democratic candidate in November, said three GOPers who hosted a conference call this morning.

The three Republicans -- former Iowa Rep. Jim Leach (who formally endorsed Obama today), former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, and former White House intelligence advisor Rita E. Hauser -- announced the formation of "Republicans for Obama," which will launch a Web site in the coming days that will be a clearinghouse of information for Republicans who want to learn more about the Illinois Democrat. The site will highlight the differences between Obama and McCain on the issues and let them know where they can go to see the candidate and how they can help in his election effort.

"From my perspective, this is simply not a time for politics as usual," said Leach, arguing that the portfolio of issues that will be passed on to the next president would be as daunting as any since World War II and would therefore require "inspiring, new, political leadership" and the kind of change he believes Obama's platform offers.

Leach, Chafee, and Hauser cited the presidential hopeful's approach to foreign policy and to the economy as reasons for supporting him over McCain, saying the Arizona senator would continue Bush Administration policies -- from the war in Iraq to an unwillingness to engage enemies in direct diplomacy -- that have hurt America's standing in the world and its financial stability.

Chafee said “we’ve seen our credibility shattered” over the last eight years. Added Leach:  “The prospect that we’ll have more of the same -- that is the source of angst of many Republicans around the country."

Hauser also pointed to the difference between the two candidates' response to the conflict between Russia and Georgia as evidence of the need for a new kind of foreign policy. She said McCain's statements had indicated a bellicose and confrontational approach to dealing with Russia, while Obama had focused more on involving world organizations and working towards reconciliation.

Leach and Hauser both alluded to a McCain campaign theme of "putting country first" to explain why they had split with their party to support Obama, with Leach saying he and thousands of Republicans would be choosing "country over party in this election" -- and Hauser saying that while it was hard to walk away from her party's nominee she had to "put country first."

The call participants declined to name other Republicans who would join the Republicans for Obama effort. When asked specifically whether Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, an Iraq war critic who traveled with Obama on a congressional delegation to the region last month, would be among the members, Leach said it was important for Hagel himself to make any such announcement, should it come. And he added, "I just hope he's considered for veep. I think he'd be a wonderful balance to the ticket."

*** UPDATE *** RNC spokesman Alex Conant emails this response: “Barack Obama’s claims to bipartisan appeal are as thin as his record. Republicans will vote for a Commander-in-Chief ready to lead -- not a partisan politician who is only ready to raise taxes and increase spending.”

Now it begins...the door has been opened for more and more Obamacans to show their support for Obama. This will be interesting to watch this unfold and see how many more come clean.
They need something to offset Democrats for McCain.

But won't the very name "Republican" irrevocably tarnish Obama with the inevitable associations that will be drawn to Cheney and Bush.  I'm sure they have met with them closed meetings sometime in the past.  Just being in the same room, or even the same party at one time, is intolerable.

Chaffee was a Republican?  When?  And Rita Hauser is what/who?  Ditto for Leach?

This like the socialist Bernie Sanders forming a "Socialists for Obama" group.  Kind of a "duh".
We finaly have some great American Republicans that want to do whats best for the country.
I wish them all the best in their effort. I hope it makes a difference and hundreds of thousands of rethuglicans see the light and vote for Obama.

Although I like and respect Sen. Hagel, I hope he joins this group as I can't see him getting the nod from Senator Obama. Maybe a cabinet position, but I doubt he'll get the VP offer.
I have to applaud the Republicans for their good decicion. I am so mad right now at the Republicans that I could spit. OUr country is in terrible shape and I blame Bush and Cheney.

Yep, and there will be more RFO's coming out for Obama. So, chew on that The whole FOX news crew, Rush, Joe S., D. Gregory, A. Mitchell, C. Todd and all the rest of the haters because we know whose side you all are on.

Not this time McSurge, not this time.

If he only picks Joe Biden or Wesley Clarke as his running mate, this will really roll

Thanks to MI Chick & Nashville for correcting 2EZ on just who Scheuneman is working for.  I'm sure 2EZ committed a typo since it would be too easy to find the truth right?
Sen. Obama offers "inspiring, new, political leadership."

What have you been smoking Mr. Leach? Obama cowardly runs away from John McCain;  has since refused any townhall debates with John McCain as promised. Off-TELEPROPTER and away from Axelrod's script, Obama is revealed as the empty suit and a light weight.
Sign me up... Jerry, Corpus Christi,Tx
Forget Chuck Hagel for VP -- Lincoln Chafee ought to be. But alas, I think he has gubernatorial ambitions...
Obama is the least experienced man to run for President in modern times on the basis of a classic advertising campaign of: New, Better Best i.e. Change, Difference, Hope and Inspiration. He claims he will unite us but has created racial tensions, and though he claims otherwise is an extremely negative campaigner. People gave him the benefit of the doubt at first, but now they realize his inexperience is showing… He’s all speech and no action. He’s not pragmatic and panics under pressure.
PUMA movement are actually a republican group that is
trying to run a stealth campaign to deny Obama a win
in november. They actually Don't supported Hillary.
Turns out they wanted McCain all along.

Look at new ad about John McCain

You guys aren't going to believe this. A clip of McCain on the David Letterman show from October 18, 2001, was found by somebody, and its making the rounds today.

Here's an excerpt of part:

LETTERMAN: How are things going in Afghanistan now?

MCCAIN: "I think we're doing fine... I think we'll do fine. The second phase -- if I could just make one, very quickly -- the second phase is Iraq. There is some indication, and I don't have the conclusions, but some of this anthrax may -- and I emphasize may -- have come from Iraq."

LETTERMAN: "Oh is that right?"

MCCAIN: "If that should be the case, that's when some tough decisions are gonna have to be made."

Think about this for a minute. Does it strike anyone else as a bombshell?

First, we have McCain flatly announcing, on Letterman no less, that Iraq is a second phase of the war - in Oct 2001.

Then we have McCain announcing the speculation that Iraq may have been behind the anthrax attacks, and if so, "serious decisions" will follow.

If Iraq is already known by the neo-cons at this time as a second phase of the fighting, what exactly could be the serious decisions McCain is refering to?

The only answer that makes the least bit of sense is:

1) McCain was fully part of this neo-con plot to invade Iraq all along;

2) McCain wasn't supposed to say the decision to invade Iraq had been made (and probably had to turn in his neo-con decoder ring as a result of that gaffe);

3) McCain was supposed to start the process of building an artificial rationale for invading Iraq by announcing by making an association between that country and the anthrax attacks.

This is really shocking stuff, but can anyone else come up with a better explanation?
Oh thank you all and welcome!!!! Let's unite and remember together we can take back the white house and restore the US image and power in this great nation of ours.

Obama 08/12

Sanity and logic cause people to follow Obama.

Not mass hypnosis or brain dead followers.

I am a big Jim Leach fan, intergrity has been his legacy and country first because the GOP has left fiscal conservatives at the door.

WAY TO GO!
Fairbanks (Alaska) Republican Mayor Jim Whitaker also endorsed Obama today, where a new poll shows Obama up by 5 in the state.
Another quote form Chafee: "I served with Sen. McCain, and he and I were the only two to vote against the Bush/Cheney tax cuts. During this campaign it is a different John McCain. He is saying he would make the tax cuts permanent. He is advocating more drilling whereas he voted against drilling in ANWR. It goes to his credibility."

Obama/Hagel '08!
No wonder the Republicans who aren't part of this neo-con movement are starting to move towards Obama.
I would love to see Hagel as VP
Now that would be real change but I dont see it
Clarke or Biden are my next picks

No to Kaine, Bayh and Sebellius. If Obama wants a woman it has to be Napalitano.

Dear MSNBC. Please get rid of Brad Blakeman and Joe Watkins. They are idiots who just spew the party drivel.
This is awesome! Go Chafee! Now this is the way to strike back!
thump!  My friends... that hurt!
...awesome.
These are thoughtful people, who know John McCain very well.
This proves that their are some conservatives with a conscience. I'm shocked, but relieved!
That's kind of cool.

Can't wait until McCain cheapens it in some way.
Its good Hagel is retiring. It kind of looks like he has some kind of personality disorder. Liberalism probably.
Change you can believe in-yes we can.
This is the beginning of the FLOOD!  Does not surprise me.  I have friends and collegues who are switching to the Democratic Party in support of Change!  Senator Chuck Hagel as the Democratic Veep woould send the powerful message that Obama is about change, moderation and the nation!  Bring back democracy and international respect!
Come on Rebublicans !! Rally behind Obama so we can change this country. We cannot stand more of the same old mess. Sore Hillary losers sure are not helping the cause. We need to get past partys and rally to reclaim America.
Hopefully, this will counter some of that PUMA B.S.

Of course, we all know that the "PU" in PUMA stands for "Politics as Usual"... and the "MA"? "Malice Artists"!!!
First Read: " Leach and Hauser both alluded to a McCain campaign theme of "putting country first" to explain why they had split with their party to support Obama, "

Obamas theme, in keeping with liberal dogma, is "Make Someone Else Pay For It". It also explains why this crew of Leach, etc., are bailing to Obama. They fit the profile.
Holy cow, there is still hope (pardon the pun) for the Republican party...they're not ALL crazy!!
Ah yes.  Bring on the unity.

Where is Hagel?

It is so refreshing to see Republicans as fired up about taking our country back, restoring our standing in the world and really addressing the hard issues that face us as a nation as the Democrats are. If Sen. Obama was a Republican, I would vote for him because I truly believe in the "urgency of now" and the forward path that he has outlined for our country.

If I was on the Board of Directors, I would not trust my corporation to be run by a 72 year old, physically limited, mentally questionable old, wrinkly dude who keeps getting the facts wrong.  John McCain's resume is only thicker because he has been in Washington longer. He has been putting the same widget in the same peg for almost 30 years and has nothing to show for it except a bunch of lobbyists who expect to something in return for their hard earned money.

No more politics as usual; it has only gotten us in two failed wars and an economy that is likely to take a roller coaster ride every day.

JUST SAY NO TO THE WRINKLY,OLD,WHITE HAIRED DUDE!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
Notice the word:FORMER...the is a good reason for that. LOL That website should get about 10 hits..lol
How is Obama winning the week when he's on vacation?
Awesome!
I can't wait for Obama to announce his veep. I am guessing Hagel...not positive though.
Talk about a wrench in the plans of republicans, it will definitely be a resurfacing of politics as usual.
Although, I am so ready to know, I am glad the Obama camp has done what they are doing to keep it private for the moment.  Talk about class!

I would be remissed if I didn't add:

Not Michelle (Sent Tuesday, August 12, 2008 9:53 AM)

BTW, I am the one and only Michelle Zee; just so happen; you seem to be the only person that doesn't know McAdulterer did this.
It's always a hint when the Repubs don't go on the attack.  Well they can't attack, because they know McCain is dirty on this issue.
Thanks for the feedback though...
Game, Set, Match.  Even other republicans dont want John McCain.  They said they are crossing over and supporting Obama because they have to put country first.  Thats just too good.  If you are planning to vote for McCain, take a good look.  There is more to him than the so called straight shootin maverick.  Now he is more like the George W. Bush clone.  Just look at his policies.  He used to buck his party, now he just wants to continue all of Bush's policies.  Thats not country first thats ME FIRST!
Obviously they know:

Obama = sage diplomacy and leadership.           Get the facts first, then act.

McCain = condemn, attack, find out the facts.

McCain is WAR WAITING TO HAPPEN.   Bet on it!
These are republicans that remind us that Abraham Lincoln was a republican.
All wise people will abandon BUSH
Wonderful!  I agree, this is not the time for politics as usual.  Our country has been lead down a dark destructive path by bush/cheney admistration. Mccain will only continue down that same path, the RNC wouldn't let him do otherwise. Mccain is a republican puppet. They have molded every issue he must take - abortion, taxes, etc.

I believe Senator Obama can put us in a new, positive  direction.   For the sake of rescuing our constitution, we must elect Senator Obama for even a chance at restoring our TRUE American values of honor and dignity, instead of the lies, deceit and deception perpetrated on us by the bush administration.
A strong message from adults putting country ahead of Politics. Thank you.
Anecdotally, this past Sunday at an organizational meeting of Obama Volunteers I met two Republicans who had found themselves incapable of supporting McCain or the GOP this time around. One of them told a great joke of no particular significance other than the words didn't match the mature proper conservative lady uttering them. Here Goes:

Why doesn't George bush have a nipple ring?
pause
Because he has a Dick Chain-y
OMG, What a breath of fresh air, Thsi makes a lot of sense to me. Hopfully some of these dark myths will dispelled by some American republicans. Real patriots.
Could it be they even have the American people in mind when they step across party lines, ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID. Its getting our military men and women killed for oil, Its politizing the Justice dept.
And yes I would vote for Hagel on the ticket. Maybe
we could even stop saying we dont know who Obama is.
That being the stupidist thing the pundits say everyday.  I just want to be proud of my country again. Coming from a military family- Father -WWll
Brother- Korea  Brother Viet Nam  Husband killed in
Viet Nam.  My thanks to those who put this country first.   Just a little ole white lady in S.C.

Obama/Biden or Hagel
marty
I am hoping my faith in human nature WILL be restored this election.  I hope and pray that people do their research and are NOT taken in by the McCain campaign outright lies - based on the closeness of the polls, that doesn't seem entirely to be the case - but genuine Republicans coming out like this is what is needed.  Congratulations to this group for stepping up!!!
I wonder what McCain has to say about this? We have other Republicans say; "McCain is an embarrassment to Republican Party", " he would be a risk for our international affairs", "hypocrite", "delusional","reckless", "vicious", these are quotes to describe the McCain who they know and work with. If this is what they say about him, it's a big reason to vote for Obama. OBAMA 08
Oh, sorry. I thought it said cross dressers for Obama.
