McCain: 'We are all Georgians'

Posted: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 3:09 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
YORK, Pa. -- Using the Georgian president's nickname -- although mispronouncing his last name -- McCain said he spoke with President "Misha" Saakashvili today and reassured him that "the thoughts and the prayers and support of the American people are with that brave little nation as they struggle for their freedom and independence."

"And he wanted me to say thank you to you, to give you his heartfelt thanks for the support of the American people for this tiny little democracy far away from the United States of America," McCain said of his conversation with Saakashvili. "And I told him that I know I speak for every American when I say to him, 'Today we are all Georgians.'"

"In 2006, I visited Senaki and reviewed the Georgian troops who had served with honor beside American soldiers in Iraq," McCain said, emphasizing his familiarity with the region. Adding later, "Two years ago, I traveled to South Ossetia my friends."

If there was any doubt that the McCain campaign would try to use this week to emphasize McCain's foreign policy credentials in light of the current conflict in Georgia then today's town hall put those to bed.

With more thank 2,000 people in attendance, McCain's Straight Talk Express bus drove into the Toyota Arena here today beneath a large American flag and with the theme from Rocky blaring over the P.A. system. McCain emerged with Sen. Joe Lieberman and former-Governor Tom Ridge by his side. Both introduced the senator and stuck to the campaign's talking points of the day.

Lieberman kicked things off by saying, "We've just seen over the last few days as the Russians invaded a sovereign nation, Georgia, and watch the response of this man, John McCain, to that crisis, right, strong, clear, principled, the kind of president we need in the White House over the next four years, to be there to protect our country, our security and our freedom."

Then McCain picked up again by placing the current conflict in a historical context, explaining the history of Georgia and the impressive number of invasions the country has survived. But he then seemed to compare the current Russian invasion to World War II and the lessons America learned from the Nazi aggression during that war.

"The impact of Russian actions goes beyond their threat to a democratic Georgia," McCain said. "Russia has used violence against Georgia to send a signal to any country that chooses to associate with the West and aspire to our shared political and economic values. My friends, we learned a great cost of the price of allowing aggression against free nations to go unchecked. With our allies we must stand in united purpose to persuade the Russian government to withdraw its troops from Georgia."

Using the Georgian president's nickname -- although mispronouncing his last name -- McCain said he spoke with President "Misha" Saakashvili today and reassured him that "the thoughts and the prayers and support of the American people are with that brave little nation as they struggle for their freedom and independence."

John McCain... The War Monger?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlX9l1g1ZE0&eurl

Here's my newest video, focusing on McCain's relationship with Washington, DC lobbyists, using clips from the past 18 years, from the Keating scandal to present. The video is about two minutes long.

A little too cocky for my liking.  He doesn't speak for me.

Not that I don't wish the Georgians well...

http://thepajamapundit.com/
so, is McCain, by alluding to WWII, also contemplating military action against Russia?  If so, you can add that to his list: North Korea and Iran. Pretty soon, under McCain, we could be involved in military action all over the world. Scary!
Using the Georgian president's nickname -- although mispronouncing his last name -- McCain said he spoke with President "Misha" Saakashvili today and reassured him that "the thoughts and the prayers and support of the American people are with that brave little nation as they struggle for their freedom and independence."

----------------------------------------

Shouldn't "Mr. Foreign Policy Experience" at least have the decency to learn how correctly pronounce the president of Georgia's last name????
Ich bin ein Berliner, huh McCain?
The theme of this campaign, take something complex and try to dummy it up. He must think the American people believe the world is as simple as he tries to make us believe.
what a buttclown.  His response is so similar to Bush's it's scary... definitely more of the same

McShame!

Obama/Biden
So, Germany doesn't matter because 200,000 people listened to Obama there, but Georgia does? When will the double standard end???
Hey McSane, GEORGIA PROVOKED THE ATTACKED!!!!
On another page, people were blasting him for mispronouncing the Georgian President's name. I didn't hear him speak. But, remember, that in some parts of the world letters are pronounced differently, some are completely silent. For example, how would you pronounce the name Tjeerdsma?  In South Dakota, it's Churchma. Not saying he didn't mispronounce but may be an explanation.
dont forget the US lost its moral authority when it invaded Iraq!  Also, its the Georgians fault for invading South O, their bluff was called.
Oh please!!!...give me a break already! Does anyone else see through this b.s.?
This is exactly why McCain will be President. He understands why it's important to put bullies like Russia in their place, and he knows how to do it.

Obama on the other hand when the fighting first started came out with the whine "Can't we all just get along?". No Barack, we can't. Sometimes you have to fight for what is right, and not act like no one is at fault.
Where does Europe stand on the situation?  Has let me act like a president McCain and do some sabre rattling talked to 'his friends' in Europe?

It's the summer and the Olympics are underway.

It's the economy stupid!
Who's acting "Presidential" now huh? Oh I hope Kieth O. eats him alive tonight because noone else will.
"We are Georgians", gimme a break!

Not this time McSurge, not this time.

MCCAIN for president all the way!!
When asked for his comment, Barack Obama exclaimed "Hey, I'm on vacation here! And get that camera out of here!".

I guess he'll get back to us next week.
Oh, great. We're hearing the drumbeat of confrontation, and seeing the specter of return to the Cold War, all because John McCain wants to get his international leadership card punched for the election.

Count me out.
Tell me how a man can brag about his foreign policy experience and his knowledge/acquaintance of particular leaders, when (1) he consistently mispronounces names and (2) he consistently misspeaks geographical boundaries (3) consistently confuses what groups are in Iraq and (4) well... the list goes on and on and on

Tell me how you republicans can call Sen. Obama supporters non-thinkers when you support McCain.  McCain...A man that has illustrated time and time again that he doesn't have a clue.  There are so many things blatantly wrong with this logic!!!!!!

MSNBC post this!!!!! I'm tired of seeing the same people with the same posts
Too bad anyone who voted for the Iraq war is being just a little hypocritical in blaming Rusian for invading Georgia. We did the same thing five years ago. I'm sure their reason sound pretty good to them too.
When he took his earlier speech on Georgia from Wikipedia, he should have asked the aide that used the internet for him how to pronounce the Georgian leader's name.
Wow!  I gues this isn't being presumptious is it?  By the way, what do these clowns propose we actually DO about Georgia?
This is a nasty problem. It really highlights why Obama is not ready for the job.
And 2 years ago, my campaign advisor Randy Scheuneman lobbied on behalf of Georgia and that's straight talk, my friends.
If Team Obama is smart they can spin this into another failed policy by the GOP and the Bush Crime Family. The Iraq War has made so that America can not respond to that 3:00 a.m. phone call. If Russia wanted to they could 4 or 5 countries before we would do any thing. The only we could do is get out the big toys you know like Mega Tons. We are so broke in this country we could afford to take a leak.

"the thoughts and the prayers and support of the American people are with that brave little nation as they struggle for their freedom and independence" and "With our allies we must stand in united purpose to persuade the Russian government to withdraw its troops from Georgia."

Okay McCain, put up or shut up--what kind of "support" exactly are you talking about? You're talking pretty tough right now, but what are you proposing to back that tough talk up with? 'Cause from where I'm standing, it looks as if we've got nuthin'. We've decided (well, Shrub and Cheney decided with your full approval) to employ our "big stick" in Iraq and it certainly looks as if that and Afghanistan are keeping us fully engaged. Don't make promises or threats on behalf of the USA that can't be carried out. That's especially true as you are currently only a Senator, even if you haven't done any actual senatorial work since April.
Has anyone seen Wag the Dog?

McCain said that he would rather lose a war than win an election - o.k. not sure I bought that one, but someone should ask him this -

"Would you rather have peace in Georgia or win an election?"
No.  We're are not Georgians now---WE'RE AMERICANS!  Imagine if Sen. Obama would have said something this foolhardy.  He would be painted as the un-American, exotic, elitist, who wants to place our national security into the whims of a foreign nation.  Of course Teflon John gets a pass.  McCain seems like an even bigger warmonger than Dick Cheney.  McCain would only need one term to exact a bombing campaign on all of Northern Africa and Western Asia and any other land that has oil underneath.  Can anyone else see how risky/disastrous a President McCain would be?
Sakaashvili played the nationalism card ala GOP tactics but it blew up in his face. This guy is a nutjob trying to drag the west into WWIII.

"A few months ago, Georgian opposition leaders were calling President Mikhail Saakashvili a criminal and a murderer, and refused to recognise him as the country's legitimate leader.

Now they have temporarily set aside their differences and rallied behind Mr Saakashvili, amid what the government has called a "state of war"."

Maybe if McCain hadn't weighed in so early (like 3 months ago) about the big bad Russians that we need to put in their place...

or maybe if he didn't have a Georgian lobbyist as his lead foreign policy advisor

or maybe if we hadn't overtaxed our military and stretched it to a point where Russia knows there are no hands left to deal...

maybe ...we would have been in a much better better place to deal with Czechoslovakia...I mean Georgia ...I mean Iraq...I mean sunni ...I mean shia... I mean

Get this guy away from a microphone before he drumbeats us into more fights that we don't have the military weight of finances to handle.

Please.
Watch out for McCain he is going to send us back to the cold war with Russia, hopefully it is only a cold war and not a nuclear one
So apart from angry rhetoric, and reminders that he knows stuff, what exactly does John McCain propose we do?

More election year pandering.

We Americans have got our own problems - and we need a President who gets just as excited about solving problems HERE as he does about finding new countries to fight with and ridicule.

Whether Georgia is free or not, I still have crappy healthcare, a falling house price, and $3.80 a gallon gas.

What is John McCain gonna do about it?

P.S. Obama is up by 5 today on the Gallup Daily Tracking . . . nobody brings up that poll unless the margin shrinks . . . strange.

Pretty darn presumptive of the not yet elected john mcsame...sort of like his flag draped scolding of the russians earlier...who does he think he is, president or something?
McCain is unreal, he needs to keep his mouth shut.
Why did Russia attack Georgia?  Just maybe they (Russia)were retaliating for what Georgia had did to the innocent women and children, etc., of that land.

Wonderous McBush would toss his nose in this.  He knows all too well what it is like to throw a rock and hide his hands.  Oh yeah, because last time I checked, IRAQ did not attack us first, but we sure make it seem as though they did.

I appreciate the Georgians serving with our troops, but right doesn't wrong anyone.  Anyway, after November we don't have to hear McBushy speak on his so called foreign policy experience; as if; that all by itself will make you a good CIC. LMAO!!!

He is another Bush and to elect him will only sink us even faster in the dilpomacy landscape of dealing with other countries.  Can't wait to say Bye-bye to McCain and Bush.
If Russians were advising, arming and training Mexican troops, would we be calmly watching? If Mexico accepted such aid, and very publicly lobbied for a military alliance with the Russians, what would McCain and Bush say then?

But that is exactly what we did with th Georgians.
When did Mccain get elected President? How dare he presume to speak for me. I don't care if there is a country called Georgia, I don't really like the state by that name either.
Saakashvili is a famously volatile risk-taker, veering between warmonger and peacemaker, democrat and autocrat. On several occasions international officials have pulled him back from the brink.

On a visit to Washington in 2004, he received a tongue-lashing from then Secretary of State Colin Powell who told him to act with restraint. Two months ago, he could have triggered a war with his other breakaway province of Abkhazia by calling for the expulsion of Russian peacekeepers from there, but European diplomats persuaded him to step back.

This time he has yielded to provocation and stepped over the precipice. The provocation is real, but the Georgian President is rash to believe this is a war he can win or that the West wants it. Both George Bush and John McCain have visited Georgia, made glowing speeches praising Saakashvili and were rewarded with the Order of St George.

From;  Huffington Post
I think McCain is trying too hard.  It's obvious.
Just another thought. I think the media misses Obama and it's only Tuesday.  They just won't admit it.
I thought that John McLame was all about America for Americans. McLame has done nothing but lambast Obama for talking to and engaging "foreigners", and here he is "Mr. Georgia".

What a bunch of immature children masquerading as men!
The Unites States has used violence against Iraq to send a signal to any country that chooses to associate with terroists.

Ya...what ever John.  Your hypocrisy knows no bounds.
So the McCain response is to send the people of Georgia our thoughts and prayers???  What a dullard!  He has obviously learned a lot from Bush.
The problem is that most people don't care about what happened in Georgia. It's the Economy Stupid!

Oh, and when he heard of McCain's "We are all Georgians" comment, Bush responded, "I'm a Texan, don't mess with Texas! I'm no Georgia Peach!"
You'd think if he was so familiar with the region, he's be able to pronounce the president's name, wouldn't ya? Give me a break. He's lieing about his foreign policy experience, too. Reminds me of the sniper fire story! A bunch of bull! Obama '08
Gag. Most Americans have no idea such a country even exists.
We are all Georgians...except I can't pronounce "our" presidents name.  Also, I am so presumptuous that I call him by his nickname.  Tell us, Johnny, how would you like Putin to call you "McNasty"?  Yeah, I thought not.

Tool.

Don, I just checked. I still have all of my equipment and as a matter of fact used it this morning on my wife. Everything worked. Wife smiling as she left for work. As for me, I will be down at Obama headquarters tonight working the phones and in your honor, I will have em flog the old visa for another $25.00. You people are getting expensive. Glad Scarborough's off this week. HE's costing me a fortune.

ROTFLMAO!
"We are all Georgians" Not me. But I do go to Atlanta sometimes on business. Does Mccain know it is the other Georgia though?
could this be a potential patriotism problem for mccain?

Devastating McCain Video
http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/08/12/devastating-mccain-video/
McCain didn't address the fact that the Russians have accused his pal Misha of butchering 2,000 innocent civiians in S. Ossetia. And from the reports I've read, Misha sounds like just another autocrat who got democratically elected and then went to work surpressing opposition political parties, kind of like Putin has done in Russia. But Russia bad. Georgia good, according to foreign policy "expert" John McBomb.
Errrrrrrrr, is this a bit pre-presidential?  Or does that only apply to Democrats? O Johnny, we never knew ye!
