Veepstakes: The base isn't happy

Posted: Friday, August 15, 2008 9:10 AM by Mark Murray

Politico's Martin checks in with key social conservative leaders to get their reaction to McCain's trial balloon of possibly picking a pro-choice running mate. Needless to say, these conservative leaders are not happy. “‘It absolutely floored me,’ said Phil Burress, head of the Ohio-based Citizens for Community Values. ‘It would doom him in Ohio.’ Burress emailed about a dozen ‘pro-family leaders’ he knows outside Ohio and forwarded it to three McCain aides tasked with Christian conservative outreach. ‘That choice will end his bid for the presidency and spell defeat for other Republican candidates,’ Burress wrote in the message.”

“He and other Ohio conservatives met privately with McCain in June, and while the nominee didn’t promise them an anti-abortion rights running mate, his staff said they could ‘almost guarantee’ that would be the case, Burress recalled."

What was McCain up to by pro-actively mentioning Ridge? Was it a trial balloon? The Washington Times notes: "Some analysts dismissed that explanation, saying the McCain organization has several experienced operatives who are themselves evangelicals or Catholics and strongly pro-life, and so it already knew what the reaction would be. But if it was a trial balloon, Team McCain got the answer loud and clear Thursday: Responses from leading political evangelicals ranged from outrage to thundering outrage.

“‘If Tom Ridge is on the ticket, I will not be voting Republican,’ Home School Legal Defense Association President Mike Farris said told The Washington Times. He thought for a moment, then added: ‘I won't be voting Democratic either.’”

More compiled by Matthew Berger, Carrie Dann, and Athena Jones…
Another shortlist showdown on Meet the Press this Sunday: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. Tom Ridge will appear on “Fox News Sunday.”

DEMOCRATS: More Democratic veep shortlist members get speaking assignments: Sens. Joe Biden, Evan Bayh and Gov. Bill Richardson will all speak Wednesday night. Convention aides say not to read too much into the speaking list or assume those already on the program are not veep candidates.

Kaine will campaign for Obama on Saturday, making six stops in his home state. Marc Ambinder writes that Team Obama's advance team is working on a Thursday event in Richmond, VA. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything veep-ish.

A good reminder: “There is nothing under Delaware law that would prevent Biden from running for both vice president and the Senate this year.”

A look at how much Bayh and Biden have voted with Obama during their time in the Senate.

The Washington Post points out that Obama has never been beholden to the liberal blogosphere, which has recently selected potential veep Bayh as the target of anti-war wrath. "…Obama has also shown he is willing to hold the liberal blogosphere at arms length, most recently by ignoring Internet entreaties to abandon support for a compromise bill on warrantless wiretapping."

REPUBLICANS: Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty spoke with the Stillwater Courier newspaper yesterday. “The main thing is I’m trying to help Sen. McCain, but to the extent I can bring some Minnesota ideas or Minnesota perspective to the table, hopefully that’s good for Minnesota and good for the country,” Pawlenty said. On veep speculation: “I’ve not been told anything in that regard, and I just don’t get into it. I’ve just stopped talking about it.”

Huckabee keeps throwing cold water on Romney: “I think there are better choices for Sen. McCain that have the approval of value voters,” he said on Fox News.

And the "short list" gets even shorter...

Seriously, the Obama campaign is going to run out of possible VPs if they keep having everyone speak at the Convention.

McCains base is not happy.  this week he said he would consider a pro-choice vice president.  At close door fundraisers he said he would consider raising taxes, I mean this guy says on thing in to his base and another behind closed doors

While we are struggling as Dems with the whole PUMA stuff; it is nice to see McCain is self-imploding on his side,...Go Huckabee!  (not a fan; but if he can cause a rift, so be it!)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Did anyone else see David Shuster completely skewer Darragh Murphy (People United Means Action PAC, PUMA) and Will Bower (Just Say No Deal – co founder) last night on hardball?  I know I said I wouldn’t comment further; but I have to point out that Darragh gave $500 to John McCain in 2000.  AND PUMA has only raised $50,000.  They both came off as the whiny, unhappy brats I’ve perceived them to be all along.  WOW, by the commentary on this blog – I had a perception that PUMA was this gargantuan uprising.  When, in fact, it is an angry Repub offshoot.  Watch more if you choose:

McCain needs a strong conservative to shore up his base.  Obama needs many things in a veep. However, he seems somewhat in a box. He said he's about changing Washington. How would he be able to pick somebody who has been in Washington for years?  But, he also needs somebody with experience. It's likely his running mate will be seen as more qualified to be president than he is.
Up in RUBY RED Alaska.

What other unprescedented things can Obama do for the blue team?

This is exciting!
.
Obama caved-in to the Clintons like a pricked balloon.

He is too weak to be president.

If Obama can't control the Clinton Clan --- how can he control the likes of Russia's Putin and other bad guys in the world?

------------------------------------------------------------
I honestly don't think John McCain wants to win this election.  If he did, his organization's moves wouldn't be so schizophrenic.
The McCain/Lieberman ticket is THE ideal; two farts that beat as one.
Good Mike Ferris, just don't vote, we won't miss you.
Seems like the base is never happy anyway, why try when they will just find something else to complain about.
The evangelical Right should just get some medical attention for their depression and make us all happy.
No kidding they are not happy.  Just heard on Countdown last night that ONE-FIFTH of the current rep senators are SKIPPING the convention!  A bit unusual? eh?

What do you think about the Veep choice, McCain supporters?
Wow, I watch the Hardball section with Darragh Murphy the founder of PUMA Pac last night.

Not only did she seem disconnected, but she had a very hard time trying to articulate the reason behind the PUMAs.

Her pac has only raised $50,000 so the belief here that there are 18 Million PUMAs is just outragious!

She also admitted that she contributed $500 to McCain's 2000 bid.  She kept refering to PUMA working for democratic values (note the small "d") and that even though she held strong Democratic views on healthcare, a woman's right to choice and other core Democratic issues -- she still insisted that if it wasn't Hillary than her PUMA's would vote McCain.

She refered to "stealing", "cheating", "back-room-dealing", and issues with Mich and Florida.  But she really couldn't provide any details supporint her argument.

How pethetic!
Well, we'll see if McCain is really the manly man he makes himself out to be. Tom Ridge is the one he most likes and respects, most wants as his VP. If he is really Mr. Maverick--beholden only to his own principals -- Tom Ridge will be his running mate.
