And so does McCain...

Posted: Sunday, August 17, 2008 10:26 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
LAKE FOREST, CA -- McCain also participated in Pastor Rick Warren's Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency here last evening. Appearing after Obama, McCain responded to the same set of questions, plus a few more due to his brevity. Mostly, McCain was short and to the point, although he told a few of his favorite stories to illustrate his points.

Interestingly, when asked for an example of his greatest moral failure he cited the dissolution of his first marriage. Although that was as detailed as he got, the fact that he mentioned it at all -- especially while current wife Cindy was sitting in the first row -- is notable.

"My greatest moral failing, and I have been a very imperfect person, is the failure of my first marriage. It's my greatest moral failure."

When asked for an example of a gut-wrenching decision he has had to make and how he made it, McCain cited the decision to remain in prison camp despite being offered early release. He said that his poor health at the time had made that decision very tough, but he made it with "a lot of prayer."

On the merits of flip flopping, McCain was asked for an issue that he has changed his mind on in the last ten years and he cited the issue of offshore drilling. He used his favorite tag line to resounding applause saying, "We've got to drill now and we've got to drill here and we've got to become independent on foreign oil."

On the issue of religion, McCain is notorious for his apprehension when it comes to talking about his personal faith, but today he opened up a little bit. When asked what being a Christian means to him. "[It] means I'm saved and forgiven and we're talking about the world. Our faith encompasses not just the United States of America but the world."

Then McCain told a well worn story about his experiences with a Christian Vietnamese prison guard.

On the issue of gay marriage, McCain left the door open tonight for legal civil unions -- something he has done before -- but unlike Obama, he did not elaborate on the issue. He said he was believed that marriage was between a man and a woman, but "I'm a federalist," he said, adding "that doesn't mean that people can't enter into legal agreements, that doesn't mean that they don't have the rights of all citizens."

On what "rich" meant to him, McCain joked that it meant having $5 million. But he said that rich "should be defined by a home, a good job and education and the ability to hand to our children a more prosperous and safer world."

McCain's Mantra

Proverbs16:25-30
25 There is a away that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
26 He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him.
27 An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning afire.
28 A froward man soweth astrife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.
29 A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good.
30 He shutteth his eyes to devise froward things: moving his lips he bringeth evil to pass.

What ever happened to love thy enemy and turn the other cheek?
Got Love?
Interestingly enough I watched a full discussion with Obama but 15 minutes into the part with McCain I was so disgusted I turned the TV off and took my dog out for a walk.  This was not to be a campaign stop with a bunch of abbreviated stump speeches, in fact Warren reminded Obama of that at the beginning and Obama did a pretty good job of sticking to that premise.  McCain, on the other hand, appeared to give one abbreviated stump speech after another without any repercussions.

It may be just me but isn't it time McCain stopped talking about when he was a POW?
What really was clear about this forum was how McCain constantly referred to his prison years and war. In my mind I eliminated those years and wondered whether the rest of McCains story is just one big blank.

He cares so much about Americans that he has vetoed all of the bills we need to make things more equitable. His war stances frighten me.

I was annoyed by his pandering need to campaign rather than show his spirituality. He shows to me that he has a lack of that thereof.

I had a sneaking suspicion that he was leaked some of the questions as they were being asked of Obama. He was to quick to answer and we know he is not quick or very smart.
My analysis for McCain -

McCain was good in givng succinct answers. However, you could tell he was quoting lines form his stump speech.  The drill here, drill now line seemed out of place. My overall impression was that he was was saying what he thought the crowd wanted to here rather than have a truly candid discussion. I do give him credit for citing his first marriage, but he could have elaborated more. It was a chance for him to show humility in a mistake and I think he missed it.

The supreme justice answer was complete pandering. A judge should be someone that interprets the constitution without a liberal/conservative bias. Simply to state the four that are considered liberal, showed that he was just trying to get an applause. IMHO it made him seem that he would only appoint judges on their political affiliation.

My biggest issue came with his answers about foreign affairs. He seemed way to eager to use military force on everything. War is a necessity in some circumstances, but it should always be considered as a last resort. He never gave examples on how he would try to make war a last option that had to be based on only the most extreme circumstances.
Most of McCain's aswers were clearly his campaign speech and he id nothing to show his faith.  He could not resist being a war monger and I am really concerned on the grave consenquences if McCain is President...I guess he still wants to win the Vietnma war.

We do not need another war monger president.
Well we can see Adam's in the tank for McCain.  Anyone who watched could see all the questions weren't selected by 20k people, they were developed by Pastor Warren himself - what a joke...Look at the questions; flip-flopping DUH, adoption (McCain has adopted) DUH, "are we going to discuss supreme court judges" - (oops, forgot I knew the question was coming)... Pastor Warren is suppose to be unbiased - he told Obama no stump speeches, and then let McCain rattle out stump speech after stump speech and get off message and never answered the questions... And what about McCain a year ago saying that his military experience won't be part of his campaign - guess he forgot that statement too, all he grabs on too is his imprisonment...Stop the lies McCain, we've had eight years of it.........
At some point, it would be nice if some one pointed out that Magoo, not Obama, is the one campaigning on pure rhetoric. If the devil is in the details, Magoo will surely take us all thru hell.
Chill vs. War..

Do we need four more years of believing in the boogey man is just around the corner somewhere...or do we need time to really pursue the injustice correctly...

McCain is looking for a fight under every rock..and I'm sure he'll find one...the only problem with that boogey man justice system is we just might create more enemies then friends in the long run...
We need good sound judgment and intelligence and he has never stated how we can achieve that goal...all I see is from McCain is a, "shoot first and let GOD sort them out", attitude and testament...
I'm not prepared to support that mistake again..Are you?
Even at a faith forum, it's noun-verb-POW.

Does anyone else find it odd that he'd follow Osama Bin Laden to the gates of Hell, but not into Pakistan?

And his assertion is that what? Most of America is rich? How out of touch is this guy?

http://www.rodneyhopper.com
And his comment about his administration being pro life?
Didn't he just tell us all last week that he didn't see Tom Ridge's being Pro Choice as a reason not to pick him as VP?
Did ANYONE get the sense that McCain was in no way unprepared for the questions that were asked?
In some cases he answered them before they were asked.
I really did not feel this event was as "on the up and up" as the media and the Pastor would like us to believe.
McCain was "on display" barking out stump speech lines and ideas.  He did not appear thoughtful (except possible when he talked for 2 seconds about his failed marriage).
He seemed more like George Bush than ever.
Doesn't anyone wonder why McCain asked "  12    ARE WE GOING TO GET BACK TO THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPREME
13    COURT JUSTICES" (from Warren's transcript) before that subject had come up?  Doesn't this cry out for at least some investigative reporting?  I guess I'm the only one that thinks there is something fishy here; that the "cone of silence" gave McCain time to rehearse the answers to the questions that he'd been previewed.
Okay Adam.. if McCain was at a religious forum then how come all of his MOST lengthy answers were about: war, his pow status and war..I don't recall this being a foreign policy forum, but a religious forum.. So from that perspective he wasn't at this religious forum.  For those people that just enjoy quick answers and one track thinking.. just think back over the last 7 1/2 years about a guy that was as the pundits said just like MCCAIN tonight..PIGHEADED only saw things his way and didn't consider any other way or circumstances.. Yes its this GEORGE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.. I mean had George Bush not been so HELL bent on going to war maybe we wouldn't even be there still!!! John  McCain what have we won in IRAQ.. We still haven't found weapons of mass destruction.. Saddam has been dead for almost a couple of years.. and we are still there.. and oh bye the way Osama Bin Laden is a bigger celebrity now than he was on 9/11.. so again I against you war mongerers what have we won?!!! A VOTE FOR MCCAIN is an affirmation that you are fine with how things are and have been the past 7 1/2 years.. If you are like McCain then you think this have been great!! and you probably live in a million dollar plus home and are not affected by the downspiral in the economy to change your economic class from rich to middle or poor.. you are probably still rich!!
So, was prison camp a little less torturous than we had believed. Any man with sense would have gone on and looked for ways to help get the others out.  He did not need to go into detail about the failed marriage because the facts are out there.  What I did hear was a lot of "I" statements and those don't convince me that he is the man to lead this country especially since I have young men in my family that I don't want to see sacrificed in a war if there is a DIPLOMATIC way to resolve the issue.
I am a born again Christian and a republican. I know what John McCain should have said but did not about being save and Jesus. His answer was not that of someone who has a relationship with Jesus, in fact he moved away from that as soon as possible. He may have sounded commanding to you and others but what I saw was someone coached up to toe the party line and rhetoric of the same old politics as usual. I also saw a man whose Christianity was on display as well of his sincereness, authenticity and humility. These are the types of things we have missed in our leadership and should have more of instead of the cowboy mentality that has illserved us for 7.5 years. I heard McCain saw that the office of the President could be used a s a bully pulpit. Let us face the fact that this administration has destroyed whatever leverage we had to use against Russia and that we are powerless to do anything against Russia with our military strained on two fronts. John McCain and the republicans might fool some of us as in the past but not this repub. I am voting democrat for a change from the crooked policy of the repubs and its war machine.
McCain was all talk and campaign speech.  I cant believe the pundits would be so disconnected to what Im sure many American, or at least the ones that called in on c-span thinks.  Many people think mccain didn't answer the questions he had not substance.  And yet, because he put on a good SHOW he was said to have "won" the night.  Thanks for letting us know who you fell in love with tonight.

Gut wrenching decision??  A testimony from a POW.... excerpts

Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain
Phillip Butler | March 27, 2008

As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States.

People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always "No - John McCain was a POW with me." The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW.

John's treatment as a POW:

1) Was he tortured for 5 years? No. He was subjected to torture and maltreatment during his first 2 years, from September of 1967 to September of 1969. After September of 1969 the Vietnamese stopped the torture and gave us increased food and rudimentary health care. Several hundred of us were captured much earlier. I got there April 20, 1965 so my bad treatment period lasted 4 1/2 years. President Ho Chi Minh died on September 9, 1969, and the new regime that replaced him and his policies was more pragmatic. They realized we were worth a lot as bargaining chips if we were alive. And they were right because eventually Americans gave up on the war and agreed to trade our POW's for their country. A damn good trade in my opinion! But my point here is that John allows the media to make him out to be THE hero POW, which he knows is absolutely not true, to further his political goals.

John was offered, and refused, "early release." Many of us were given this offer. It meant speaking out against your country and lying about your treatment to the press. You had to "admit" that the U.S. was criminal and that our treatment was "lenient and humane." So I, like numerous others, refused the offer. This was obviously something none of us could accept. Besides, we were bound by our service regulations, Geneva Conventions and loyalties to refuse early release until all the POW's were released, with the sick and wounded going first.

I for one am amazed at the bias that first read is giving to John McCain.  You point out that Rev. Warren warned Barack Obama not to stump speech, but McCain was not warned and gave several stump speech answers, esp. his "drill here drill now".  He has not been called out for this, and worse, praised for it.  He was alot more political, not giving answers to several questions, but changing the subject to his stump speeches.  He never did answer the rich question, just gave a vague, general if you have a home, job and kids, your rich....get real, alot of middle class are having a hard time keeping their home, job and kids in school.  This last definetly convinced me that his millions, jet, and multiple houses has left him without a clue as to ordinary middle class americans feel or think.
Short and to the point, because there isn't much depth there.  Just reactions and 1 sec. black and white decisions.  Not the man I want leading my country out of this morass.
Dthe POW stuff.  No difficult decisions in the last thirty years? (see first paragraph)
Send him an ABBA DVD and put him out to pasture.

And, Sen. Obama was a wonderful, regular guy vacationing with his family out here last week.  Shorts and slippers, walks on the beach with his daughters, picnics in the park, shave ice treats (snow cones), visits with his grandmother at her home and to his grandfather's grave in Punchbowl National Cemetary, and tossing flowers into the ocean in memory of his mother.
To me, John McCain's answers were shallow and evasive. Mr. Warren never called him on it while he  constantly told Barack Obama that he (Warren) did not want Obama's stump speech. Yet, all of the answers I heard from Mr. McCain were from his stump speech. McCain shot off his answers without really taking time to think about them.  On the other hand, when Senator Obama answered the questions, he took a few moments to think about them.  Granted, he could have been more concise but I felt he actually answered the questions.

Also, McCain calling people "my friends" when he doesn't know them is downright annoying to me.  I don't care what anyone says, Senator McCain came off as patronizing to me.

If anyone was watching this forum to learn anything about Senator McCain's true feelings about his faith, I'm sure they came away sorely disappointed.
I think the most important outcome here will be to give "values voters" permission to crawl out from under the wreckage of the Bush administration. Many people I know personally are today ashamed of having been intimidated into reelecting Bush in 2004 by politically connected pastors, who sullied their brand-name by associating it with war, torture, indifference, corruption and hypocracy. Internet comments from actual religious voters seem genuinely relieved that their own conscience is in play again.

Seeing Obama in this light will also help less-than-attentive Christians stand up to people who spread deliberate lies about him. Obama was bearing witness to the message of salvation. That is a core requirement of the actual faith supposedly espoused by the conservative "religious" political machine. A more fundamental and non-negotiable requirement is commandment number eight: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."
I am not trusting you guys anymore to be fair.  Over the last few months I have been so disappointed in your coverage of this election until I am just sad.  I feel bad for Obama he will never get a fair chance with your news network.  It dose not matter because if Obama is meant to be the President there is nothing you guys will be able to do to prevent it.  I know this is little off the subject but I needed to say this I no longer like MSNBC except for Keith Olbermann, people who support him needs to hear fair and balance coverage of our candidate.  McCain is so rich that he believes if you have a house you are rich, my what is wrong with this man.
In what way can I trust a man who continues to spread lies - - - - and then call them jokes?  In what way can I trust a man, who speaks quickly and without thought, to use reason in making policy or answering that proverbable three o'clock a.m. phone call?  In what way can I trust a man who uses self when describing a relationship with God? In what way can I trust a man, who has 100 million dollars, to describe what is rich - what is middle-class - or even what is poor?

In other words - - - in what way can I trust John McCain?

My simple answer is:  I CAN NOT!

But, with my whole heart, I feel that I can trust Senator Obama.  YES I CAN!
So McCain was allowed to use his tag-line on drilling? Obama was told not to give a stump speech. I guess the pious reverend prefers McCain's definition of "rich."
I am a cenrist Democrat.. but Senator MaCain directness and what seems to me utter sinceriy and directnss, has made me change my mind.. I will vote for Senator McCain
McCain gave a stump speech and peppered it with corny, doubtable tales re his "past"..all to take up time and avoid answering in depth and with knowledge the questions given to him. He covered up his shallowness with inanities, worn-out phrases. By contrast, Obama gave measured, well thought-out answers..whether they would please the audience or not, and showed his intellectual, sincere personality. He treated the situation as it was meant to be..a religiously-based question and answer period, not the opportunity to say "what a great president I'll make"....unlike McCain who came right out and said what a great president he would make.
One was sincere, one was rehearsed and unsincere.
My pick.....the "winner"....Obama, without a doubt.
Will "none of the above" be on my presidential ballot?
Mccain was brilliant.
Obama not so much,he confirmed that he is trying to pander to conservatives.
One thing was glaringly obvious (or assumed): that the only Christians in the country are Anglo whites. Where were the Asian Christians, and the Hispanic Christians, and the African American Christians and those of the Jewish faith, etc.? I was disappointed that this looked more like a Republican event and not an event for a country with Christians of ALL races. A very poor and over-hyped event.
Surprisingly, McCain hit it out of the ballpark.  He was funny, engaging, sure, and precise.  When I think about Obama's answers, it seemed that a lot more refinement, discussion and collaboration would go on before we actually could see the details of any number of his plans.  How odd would it be if a shift started to occur that revealed McCain as the better communicator.
What intrigued me most was when McCain was asked the same question as Obama about merit pay for teachers, which was a three-part question.  Pastor Rick had no more than begun to ask the question when McCain quickly replied something along the lines of, "Yes and yes and they should be helped to find other jobs".  Those were appropriate answers to a three-part question, but the only problem was that the question had not yet been asked.  Warren was visibly startled by the exchange.  The impression was clearly given that someone had either permitted McCain to watch the Obama segment, or they had provided him with the questions in advance.  Unless both participants were given the same assistance one would have to question the integrity of the process.  The degree to which Warren was surprised left no doubt that he was unaware of any such hanky-panky, but in a Forum on Faith, if that in fact happened, that would be something of a commentary on character relative to Senator McCain, would it not?  It smacks of wanting something so badly that one is willing to bend the rules a bit.
I have no doubt in my mind tha McCain it's a great men that it's clear to my I just thing that Obama would be a better president our country need full attention fro, our goverment now and for the next 10 to 20 years.
McCain sez  it takes $5 millon to be rich.
No wonder his tax give-away is so generous to people making ONLY $2.9 million PER YEAR.
Obama's plan saves the poor from regressive taxes.  McCain's plan saves the rich.
What I heard from McCain sounded identical to the same song and dance by George W Bush administration and stated many times he will maintain many of the Bush's policy, Obama on the other hand spoke more like a true statesman and discussed a wide range of changes from the status quo. McCain is wide to the right with Corporate America in his pocket (Walmart and Big Oil).
It doesn't pay to be honest in America. I guess we just want a safe soundbite and claim it as truth. I am beginning to feel sorry for us as a country.
Yes, it's true. I really don't like to talk about my time as a POW except to let everyone know I am a true American hero every chance I get. It's true you know, I am a hero and if you give me a chance I will start some war's just to prove i KNOW HOW TO WIN THEM. John Mccain a true American hro.

PS did I mention I am a war hero?
McCain said, "some of the richest people I've ever known in my life are the most unhappy."

I am sure that's a huge relief to the working poor of our country. It's right up there with "The handicapped are so lucky, they get the best parking places!" To say McCain is out of touch is wrong. He's in touch with his version of the middle class. Those making less then $5 million a year.

From another post that I so agree with
I watched this extraordinary interview and have to say that he second half, this with Senator John McCain, was far more relaxed, sympathetic, and — overall, favoritive of the senator from Arizona than it was of the senator from Illinois.
To be sure, the interview with Senator Obama was conciliatory, and the questions fair enough. But the tone of, and the treatment of the questions offered Senator McCain were of such a different tenor, that the fairness of the event, overall, is called into question. The segment questioning Senator Obama repeatedly demanded no “stump” speeches be made from this forum; the segment interviewing Senator McCain permitted his speechification at nearly every opportunity.
Any church is good because it brings us closer to God. No church is good when it chooses to be God.”
I was very disappointed with Pastor Rick Warren Balanced of the Religious Form he held with the Presidential Candidates.
Dear Fellow Obama supporters!

I'm mortified.  It appears our support of Obama is extremely misguided and misplaced..rather, this election is about "John Rambo McCain's" ascension to the presidency.  Its going to be an amazing trilogy of from "POW to President"

I thought McCain had zero chance of winning this election but the platinum and comb over americans are convinced "John Rambo McCain" is the man to take care of the country during these dangerous times.  After all...he (McCain)can defeat evil.  Barack would only confront it. Rationally speaking, I didn't think that it was possible to defeat what would be a "matter of thought" (evil).  Heck...I have a bachelor's but didn't finish at the top of my class like Senator McCain.  right.
I DONT KNOW HOW McCain want to say he is nothing like bush last night he sounds just like bush i had to take a second look if it was bush talking .he is adopting everything from bush.well now he want to folow benladen to the gATES OF HELL I WONDER IF THE SURGE WORK SO WELL AND ITS IS STRATIGY WHY IS HE NOT CAUGHT YET McBUSH WILL BE 72 SOON I WONDER IF HE IS GOING TO GO OUT AND FIND BENLADEN HIMSELF.
Okay everyone this Rick Warren person is going to be on Larry King Monday. We all must give Larry some questions that we deserved to be answered.

Was the Fix in from the beginning?
You said no stump speeches but why was stump speeches allowed by McCain
Weren't you supposed to ask both candidates the same question, well what happen?
Obama showed himself to be sincere and wisely reflective about his beliefs. By stark contrast, McCain's answers and the "Christianity" he espoused (at least pretended to embrace) have the depth of bad bumper stickers. We all know those kinds of poser McCain type "Christians," who tell everyone else they're "saved" and "forgiven," and go to church to punch their tickets; but who don't live a reflective and meaningful Christian life, who don't let the Christianity of the bible bear the least on their actions and choices. McCain's unreflective canned answers show him to be, at the very best, a ticket-punching bumper sticker "Christian."
The forum as presented by Rick Warren offered the best insight into the hearts and minds of the two candidates of any format I have ever seen.  It avoided both candidates talking at once and the annoying interuptions that are so prevelant when candidates present differing outlooks on issues.  This was the best two hours I have experienced to date since the campaigns began!
Rick Warren = ABC Debate

Like Obama said the Devil is in the Details = John McCann was given the questions ahead of time. John McCann wouldn't go on CNN Reglion Forum but he would do this.

The Devil is in the Details
As usual, there's a place for every one at the table in this country except me and my fellow atheists.  The religious right, evangelicals, or whatever name you want to give these pedantic, narrow minded folks have had their president for 8 miserable years.....hasn't worked out too well, IMHO.  It's sad that McCain has to pander to these people.  I vote Libertarian, but I might have considered McCain if he'd told them to stuff it.
Once the interview started he knew like many of the post here knew he was being set up.

There have only been two outrage debates that gather so much outrage. It was this Rigid Platform and the ABC Debate.

Obama learned valuable lessons these people are not your friend specially a man you supported George Bush Twice.
I was surprise to learn that the most the most gut-wrenching decision McCain ever had to make was not leaving his sick wife.  She had be faithful and waited for his return from war.
I hope that many journalist and network commentatrs saw how to conduct a debate with decency and professionalism at its best. This was supposed to be an interview and Obama did not use the format to make political speeches like McCain but followed the script that Warren wanted to accomplish, which was to know more about the candidates personal conduct.
Items like  being prisoner of war, rhetoric about Russia and Georgia was not the place for this forum. And for the record McCain was so upset over  the failure of his marriage that he left wife number #1 who was recovering from a disability and married a very rich wife #2 before the divorce was even finalized.  I rest my case
I watched the Forum hoping to hear more substance from Senator McCain and more Soul from Senator Obama. I got the soul, but once again was left with no more than a pathetic attempt on Senator McCain's part to entertain the audience and viewers with more of the "SAME" tired old stories and stump stuff that does nothing more than make it obvious he struggles with substance and truth. He once again exhibited he has no "new" plan for improving and healing America in its troubled times. McCain's strong similarities to Bush on every front are frightening. Some say he has the experience edge, the problem is the experience he shows proves that with a McCain Presidency we would have nothing more than four more years of the same problematic way of thinking that got us to where we are today. We don't need another "Entertainer in Chief" we need someone who can set a different tone and have the intelligence, demeanor and character to take our country in a different direction. We live in a different time, different World and we need a different kind of President.
I guess Candy Crowley was the only one who noticed that McCain appeared to know the Supreme Court question ahead of time. And many of the C-Span Callers are saying that John McCain new the questions ahead of time also.

A pastor in company with the devil wow but nothing surprises me.

But in the end God exposes everyone
McCain largely said this:
