Obama plays up McCain's 'rich' answer

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- During a roundtable discussion with a few dozen women here today, Obama used McCain’s recent quip about rich people being those with an income of $5 million to try to paint the Arizona Republican as out of touch with ordinary Americans.

"[McCain] was in a panel the other day with me, Rick Warren, some of you may have seen it -- and Rick Warren asked him -- how do you define rich? He said, maybe he was joking, he said, “$5 million.” Obama added, "Which I guess if you're making $3 million a year, you’re middle class. But that’s reflected in his policies -- where, you know, for people making more than $2.5 million, he’s giving folks a $500,000 tax break. And so this is a fundamental difference in this election. What I've said is we're gonna give 95% of working families a tax break, but it's gonna be ordinary folks."

[***UPDATE: Actually, as we've pointed out, while McCain would substantially cut taxes for millionaires -- more than Obama -- McCain's break for the rich would only be about half of what Obama said. According to the Tax Policy Center, for those making about $2.9 million, they would get a $269,364 tax break from McCain. Obama's cuts are skewed for the middle class and would increase those in that tax bracket by about $700,000. It will be interesting to see if Obama continues to use the figure.]

When asked to define "rich" at Saturday's forum at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in Orange County, McCain replied, “If you are just talking about income, how about $5 million?” The Arizona senator quickly made clear he was joking and even said at the time that he was probably providing fodder for opponents who would distort the comment.

Both sides have consistently tried to paint the other as out of touch with middle-class concerns. The McCain campaign has portrayed Obama as a tax-and-spend liberal, while Obama says McCain's policies would favor the rich and big businesses.

Today's meeting here with 43 female supporters and volunteers was the senator's second such event in New Mexico in recent months. He was last in Albuquerque on June 23, when he spoke with women about issues like equal pay, paid sick leave, expanding the Family and Medical Leave Act, education, and affordable health care -- all topics he revisited today.

Obama criticized McCain’s health-care plan, saying it would make coverage unaffordable for average families, and he blasted the Republican's opposition to measures to promote alternative energy.

Obama ended the roughly hour-long meeting by telling the audience it was going to be a close election and that New Mexico -- a state that narrowly went to Bush in 2004 -- was going to play an important role. "This is going to be a close election. It's going to be a close election, even though people know George Bush has done a miserable job."

He told a group of donors in San Francisco Sunday that he was gonna win despite attacks by the Republicans' "machinery" and today he told the group he was prepared to fight back.

"We’re going to have to hit back and we’re going to have to fight hard and we’re going to have to work hard," he said. "We’re going to have to earn this election."

Despite being a “max contributor” to Obama during the primary season, I don't know how to send a clear message to the Obama campaign but I'm hoping that if enough people yell loud enough, the message will get through.   I maxed out to him during the primaries despite being a lifelong Republican because I have been disgusted at the current Administration’s “party (and even self) before country.”  However, I will NOT give another dollar unless and until I see he and his campaign getting real about the fact that if they want to win, they are going to have to get tough and hit back.   And by that I don't mean a few speeches (they think this is "getting tough.")  I mean getting nasty enough (all on the merits, not lies) that weak-kneed commentators start whining about "oh, what happened to "new" politics, and what happened to the "Obama brand," etc, etc, etc).  I'm as idealistic as the next guy and would love it if we lived in a world in which the right arguments won and conversations could be conducted in a civil manner.  Unfortunately, the elections of 2000 and 2004 proved that is not the case in today's America.   Obama will be yet another on the trash-heap of history if he doesn't start swinging back and swinging back hard.

Nope, no distortion of the comment here...he actually DID say $5 million!

I can't wait for the inevitable "UPDATE" which will say that McCain said that's not what he said...or something like that.

Maybe he'll just say he was joking...

He had to joke about it because he probably has no idea what middle class is.
MCFOSSIL IS A JOKE DO WE AS A COUNTRY REALLY WANT 4 MORE YEARS OF THIS GARBAGE
As a Barrack supported, I am ready to work to earn this election. I found that when you work for something you are more appreciative of it.  I did not vote the last election and I regret it because I did not do my part and look what happened.

$4.9M == ghetto. Paris Hilton says so.
Can you even imagine McCain organizing and leading a roundtable meeting with 43 women?

(Answer: never)

This is one of the things I like best about Obama. He respects women and their rights. During the forum on faith, he said that his wife and grandmother are two people he turns to for advice, along with various senators. McCain mentioned two military men and a businessman. Nothing wrong with that, but he didn't even mention his wife, whom he has denigrated publicly a number of times.

Women, wake up and smell the coffee! Let's not vote another "good ole boy" into the most important office of the land!

Vote Obama '08!
Why just write "Obama says" when the FACTS are very clear?  The Bush/McCain tax policies WILL help the wealthy; Obama's WILL give more tax relief to the middle class.

Your job isn't to make sure everything is tit-for-tat.  Your job is to write the FACTS and tell the TRUTH.
Is McCain SO confident about his positions, that he thinks he can JOKE about what dollar amount defines the middle class or the poor?

I don't know about anyone else, but sometimes when I was faced with a question I didn't know the answer to, I would give some really stupid off-the-wall answer, laugh about it, then try to change the subject.  McCain probably tried that trick.

He obviously doesn't know the answer to the question, or if he does, he knows that if he said what he really thinks, people would be outraged at his lack of understanding what regular folk are trying to live off of.

He has no empathy, and IMHO lives in a RICHER bubble than Bush does.
How OUT OF TOUCH do you have to be to think the cut-off point between rich and regular is 5 mil?
McSame is a joke.  A very bad one.
Kudos for Barack Obama for using that ill-advised answer!! it really illustrates how out of touch McCain is with the average American!!

Oh First Read.

I just don't know what to say sometimes . . . .

I know that this post is relevant . . .

But is it more relevant than John McCain saying that in the 21st century nations don't invade other nations, conveniently ignoring that little adventure in Iraq?

Or John McCain saying that the conflict in Georgia is the first major conflict since 9/11 - one again forgetting Iraq AND Afghanistan - (he made a similar comment that was ignored in the edited Katie Couric interview).

Or the fact that not only has John McCain NOT rejected the new smear book about Senator Obama, he thinks it is a matter of humor?

Why do you let John McCain get away with EVERYTHING?

John McCain is making it perfectly clear that his adminstration is prepared to make war all around the world. His world view = U.S. good, all who disagree evil.

How can the press just whistle by the graveyard of John McCain's delusional thinking?

Why can't the media put our Country First - ahead of your horserace ratings?
Barack is right on on two points: 1) McCain is out of touch with the American people.  He lives in his own little world of handlers and confused thinking.  2)Barack will have to hit back and fight hard.  I would like to think the voters are smarter, but it looks like 10 word sound bites are better than clear explanations.  Maybe a combination of both.  Obama will not lose this election, the country will not allow 4 more years of memory lapses, stupidity, poor judgement, another lousy POTUS.
IT was interesting that Sen McCain could not articulate what he considers middle class. Will be interesting to see how long the press will let him again dodge answering a question (Anyone ever hear back what Sen McCain's answer was regarding "The Pill" question?)
he has more houses than some people have shoes, he has a private jet, and lots of money.  He may want to hide behind his wife and say that belongs to her,  but you do not stay married all those years, and every time you see McCain she is next to him. They are sharing something more than just jokes

Obama 08
I watched the program and thought Obama was overly cautios in most of his responses. He needs to shorten his replies and get to the point as quickly as possible. He is a brilliant man and should be able to reply succinctly without worrying about being misinterpreted. I did not know how to react to McCain's mumblings, I was stunned by the fact that his replies were confusing and did not stick to the questions asked by Warren. I,too, felt some shenanigans had occured prior to his appearance on stage. Was he programmed prior to the questions?
McCain is a multi millionare thanks to his rich trophy wife...he's the one who's out of touch!  He's the elitist with his $500+ shoes, 10 houses, etc.  He's such a hypocrit!  I hate McCain...how the election polls are so close blows my mind!  Oh wait, I know, in the year that was for the Dems to lose, they put forth a very challenging candidate! Whatever.  And I agree with the first post...Obama needs to hit McCain hard, and where it hurts!  Tell all the world about his "affair" with an underage girl while in Vietnam.  That'll get 'em rolling.
Duh!  As a very average...in fact probably poor and day by day getting more so American, Sen. McBlinky's answer makes me ill.  In my state if you're making over $100,000 (unless you have 5 or more kids)you are doing very nicely and if you make 8 or 10 times that you could be rich.  Out of touch, careless attitude, mean temperment...these are not attributes for a president.  Vote Obama!

Ask McCain about his $460 Itialian shoes, maybe those laid off American workers would have a job if mccant bought $460 American shoes.

Straight Talk On The Economy?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVVIw7oZEyk&eurl

I'm continually blown away at how McCain and the GOP spew such nasty lies.  So I have to agree with Pete in Albany that we need to take the offensive and hit McCain HARD!

'5 million'  -- straight from the horses' mouth!
McCain did not make it clear he was joking.  He made it clear he had no idea how to answer the question.  After he said "$5 million", he immediately got nervous and tried to back-pedal because he wasn't sure how that answer would be taken.  But then he never offered another answer that made more sense.  5 million was his first, best guess.
I know it sounds overly dramatic, but if McCain wins in November, I'm moving to Canada. Really. I don't want to live in McCain's America, listening to McCain's mainstream media and eating dog food in my retirement years. Obama represents the best that is in us, if he gets chopped up in this election, I'm no longer an American.
McCain is rich.  He owns 10 houses.  He has no idea what the middle class is about.  He would give large corporations a tax break, and spend, spend, spend on wars, wars, wars.  How could anyone seriously consider voting for him?  I guess because they too, are stupid.
Obama needs to keep on playing up the McCain's "rich" answer.  He needs to stress that McCain is a lifetime politician who is out of touch with Americans.  Your typical American does not have 10 houses valued at $36 million.

Obama needs to talk about his childhood and life experiences - being raised by a single parent, living on food stamps, etc.  Obama needs to discuss how he is the American dream and that his story is only possible in USA.

He needs to relate his life experience when talking about today's problems - economy, making ends meet, welfare, education, heathcare, etc.

Then give detailed solutions.

I agree with the 1st commentor about hitting back hard. I was one of the dunces that wrote to the Kerry Campaign office in 2004 telling them NOT to go negative.  Boy - Have I changed since then...I want Obama to hit back like a Sledgehammer this time.  By the way, I am one of those small donors who has not maxed out yet but I want the same thing you do.
This is one of the things I most dislike about McCain, as well as Bush.  They seem to think giving a "cute" answer is good enough for us.  It is not!  Time for the antics to be put to rest.  Most of us are more than ready for a thoughtful, intelligent response to the questions.  Even if we disagree, we can at least be assured that the question is taken seriously and given a reasoned, coherent answer.

Being flippant is not presidential.

Obama/Biden '08
If in a close political race and after being asked how you define rich you don't say people making 5 million and then followup with "I was just joking". Why? Because there is always a touch of truth in what one says even if joking. Two, it shows you have no earthly idea how to define middle class and three, it shows you are stupid enough to make such a comment on national tv knowing it will be made fodder of even if you were joking. Case closed.

We need a Presdient who will treat the issues this country faces seriously. Not one who might joke, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Russia.
$500,000?  Thought it was $269,000.  But that was on Friday and today's Monday and though I didn't see the Warren "debates" I'm getting a distinct impression that Obama's a little nonplussed and needs to whip out some unfounded and BS rhetoric.  Soundbites and cliches`.

But here's where Democrats really need to get worried.  The NYT seems to be saying that the DNC needs to "define" Obama.  Does anyone remember what has happened to Democrat candidates when the "establishment" asserts itself?

Be very afraid of Howard Dean and the DNC.  The have a tendency to remake their candidates in a way that is reminiscent of a defective transporter on "Star Trek".  They take 'em apart, but they just don't reassemble properly.
McCain talking about economics during this campaign is like a bridegroom talking to his beautiful, virgin bride about lace curtains on his wedding night!

McCain couldn't care less. War is sexy to him, and Iran, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, and G-D knows who else is his Viagra.

That is why such frightenly serious issues such as the economy is just a joke to McCain. He cannot manage to even feign an real interest in what many Americans struggle with everyday. Which is, how am I going to get there, and how will I eat when I do?
McCaint avoided the question and said that he won't raise anyones taxes, implying that we all get the same break. But that is obviously wrong. A guy making $5million will save millions under McCain versus Obama and those who make $50,000 will save nothing. And those who make $5million are not struggling to pay for rent and food and medical and school and gas. Those who make obscene amounts of money should be taxed more period.
I agree, you guys. Obama has got to hit back HARD. He goes after your patriotism (rather win an election than a war) you go after his temperment. Johnnie is old and cranky and could have his finger on the button. Sow doubt....the possiblity of war with Iran and dare I say Russia? Not too far-fteched with trigger-happy Johnnie....the fool thought we left Vietnam too early. Wanted victory and a few more hours of waterboarding - wait did you really flip flop on coercive intterrogation? You? Pandering to your nasty base....you should be ashamed... Also, how has Cindy McCain's criminal junkie past avoided any coverage? Win, win win....
With friends like Rezko, who needs to be rich?
I want Rick Warren to explain to me why he said at the beginning of the show.."McCain is in a cone and he can't hear anything".

Mr Warren OWES ME ( and a few other million people) an explanation !!!

By the way: it looks like Andrea is returning to her journalist roots.!!!Bravo!!!
I guess "rich" is a relative term.  For the McCains, with Cindy's net worth around $100 million, $5 million would mean that Cindy would need to cut back on her shopping.  You'll recall she spent about $750K in one month which, IMHO, is obscene given the number of children in the USA, and the world, that go to bed hungry each night.

John and Spendy McCrane are out of touch.....way out of touch.  And some have the nerve to call the Obamas "elitist."

Obama/ Biden 2008!!!!
I agree to you all, as i think it is ridiculous what Mc Cain is saying and really shows that he is not in touch with ordinary people. I can`t believe that some people think that Barack Obama is out of touch because he really thought before giving stupid answers. By the way i think Barack Obama is on his way back hitting Mc Cain thoughtfully about the issues in oposite to Mc Cain`s insulting ads and comments. Hopefully the American people will recognize that Mc Cain is standing for the same failed Bush politics and Barack Obama is offering change to politics worldwide.

I`m also of the opinion that Mc Cain is misusing the Russian-Georgian conflict for his stand as commander in chief. Many European networks (e.g. ZDF in Germany)not only blame the Russians of being responsible for this outbreak of violance but also show the Georgian leader as selfish and agressive, so that Barack Obama is right in calling both sides to reduce violance.
A one term Senator that beat the Clinton machine and is up against a Senator that has been there for over 25 years. Plus, he half black and half white. He's beaten the "machine" and he's beating the old guard. Why? Because, the average Joe in America has been getting screwed ove the past eight years. He average Joed (sleeping giant) has awakened from his sleep and is going to be heard big time, come this November.  Adios Republican's.
Mermaid Man is a cheater.

All Obama supporters need to BLAST WARREN on CNN this eve
A joking response? Maybe McCain was joking, maybe not, but that really begs the question, doesn't it? He was there to answer the questions and Mr. Straight Talk never gave another answer involving numbers, just a lot of baloney on how he didn't believe in raising taxes on anyone under any circumstances and how lowering taxes is always good. I know there are wingnuts out there who think that the income tax should be done away with entirely. They're probably fine with an answer like that. For everyone else, there's only one word that fits: pandering.
Mark,

MCCAIN DUCKED THE QUESTION IN WHICH WARREN EXPLICITLY SAID HE WANTED A FIGURE. McCain then immediately added that his opponents would distort the comment to distance himself from anyone pointing out how completely he DUCKED THE QUESTION.

McCain's camp will next scream "Class warfare!!" if anyone points out how much he DUCKED THE QUESTION.
You know McCain and his funny jokes?  Like the one about rape, the one about the economy, the one about killing innocent Iranians, the one about World War III, John McCain just a card.  The real punchline is if this wacko McCain gets elected President.
When Nobama is POTUS we'll all be "Rich" so that we can be taxed even more!
Lighten up Francis.  McCain also said rich wasn't defined by dollars.  Then again Obama didn't even give a dollar amount - just said that over $250k is 'comfortable'- never said what rich was.

Go back and ask him.  Or read the article.  At least McCain made a joke about it instead of not answering like Obama did.
How can you forgive Obama for his drug use and breaking the law, but you can't forgive McCain for something that happened almost 40 years ago at a time when he'd been under duress for 5-1/2 years?  And, since about half the children in this country grow up with divorced parents, does that mean that those children should forever be angry at their parents?
In the end, Pat, it really doesn't matter what you think; it's "above your pay grade."  The Lord with his fatherly love forgives.
NObama (Sent Monday, August 18, 2008 10:13 AM)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Last I checked, "thou shall not do drugs" was not one of the Ten Commandments that you cons think need to be posted everywhere, but "thou shall not commit adultery" is.

Here lies the hypocrisy of religion in general.

This must be above your pay grade as well.
Both being Washington self serving paper hangers! There concern for the well being of the common person on the street sucks! They have no concept to every day living. Rich, get richer and the poor are poorer! They make in a life time ten times what a common person makes. Do you think they even know where the gas cap on their car is? When was the last time "they stood in the check out line at the store? They both belong to this derailed Congress, their concepts are self serving and we know they don't represent this nation. So what is ""RICH?
I am not a Obamacrat nor a Republican, but when I look at all of the talk, the choice comes down more of the same old tired party (Grand Old Party)or change. Sometimes we need change for no better reason that it would be different. A breath of fresh air is what this country needs, not the same old hot wind that has been blowing for eights years. Hopefully it will not be like looking forward to Winter in the middle of a hot summer, only to wish for summer in the middle of a cold winter. Just wish hope could flow forever ever like an enternal spring.
Another  4- 8 years of Bush's "Rob the poor, feed the rich" economic policies, and "rich" will mean "lives indoors, eats three times a day."

Thnik it can't happen here?
Saying McCain believes rich is 5 million would be as honest as saying Obama believes only authors are rich for the jokes each of them made at Saddleback. Intellectual dishonesty by Obama and his followers are why he has lost this lifetime registered Independent's vote.
