*** Veep madness: As we warned yesterday, it's silly rumor week when it comes to the VP speculation. From rumors about Obama naming his 'mate in hours to McCain picking his location to unveil his choice, both campaigns spent last night shooting down reports about who, when, and where. However, the Obama camp was more emphatic about shooting down the New York Times report (which said that an announcement could come as soon as tomorrow) than the McCain camp was about the Politico story (which noted that the Arizona senator’s pick will come on August 29, the Friday after the Dem convention).

VIDEO: With less than a week to go until the Democratic Convention, Barack Obama is expected to announce his running mate in the next few days. NBC’s Chuck Todd discusses possible choices.

By the way, there are three reasons why an August 29 VP announcement for McCain could be a problem: 1) it will come as nearly every political reporter -- save those actually following McCain -- is headed on a flight from Denver to the Twin Cities; 2) it occurs at the start of the Labor Day weekend, when many Americans are probably headed to the nearest beach or lake; and 3) it’s the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Still, the upsides of picking that day: 1) it immediately forces the national press corps to turn its attention away from Obama and to McCain; 2) it steps on McCain's 72nd birthday a tad; and 3) it creates a little buzz going into the weekend of what could be one of those bad press weeks for the Republican Party, as many media outlets focus on all the Republicans NOT showing up to the convention and the Bush-Cheney opening night potential dud.

*** Things that make you go, hmmmm: Here’s a VP nugget courtesy of Politico's Mike Allen, who notes National Review’s Rich Lowry speculating that McCain's emphatic pro-life statements to Rick Warren on Saturday were about shoring up the base and preparing them for the Tom Ridge pick. It’s not a bad theory. The growing Republican CW is twofold. One, Pawlenty appears to be the safest pick, given that one no one is vetoing him. And two, McCain is more likely than Obama to upend the CW with his decision. Here’s another VP nugget: We now know that Obama had one of his last face-to-face meetings with Biden before he left for Hawaii. And don’t miss this: The AP reports that Bob Woodward’s next book on the Bush Administration is scheduled to come out right after the GOP convention. That timing could step on McCain's post-convo bounce. McCain is trying to step on Obama, and Woodward may be stepping on McCain.

*** The back-and-forth: Many folks following Obama -- and not wanting to simply ask too much about the VP pick -- noticed he had a feistier tone in his stump yesterday. Of course, many used the Sunday New York Times piece about Democrats complaining about Obama's failure to define "hope" as an impetus for this "get tougher" mindset. As for McCain, there really is a difference when the issue focus shifts away from the domestic. Can you just see the bounce in McCain's step now that the issue terrain is all international? There really is a difference in candidate McCain when he is forced to stump on domestic issues and candidate McCain when he's in his international comfort zone. Yesterday's speech to the VFW was a good example.

*** The Clinton restoration project: Just as another article wonders why Obama isn’t picking Hillary Clinton as his running mate comes the news that Bill Clinton praised McCain on energy policy and climate change. Was Bill Clinton playing mind games or simply stating the obvious? Conspiracy theorists will have a field day with this…

*** There Will Be Oil: Today, McCain visits an oil rig platform in New Orleans, where he will promote his energy policies. (Certainly saying “Drill here and drill now” will make a bit more sense today than he when he said it a motorcycle rally in South Dakota.) This comes after McCain had to scrap an earlier oil rig stop in the Big Easy last month. The campaign said the reason for the cancellation was Hurricane Dolly. But as the Washington Post also noted at the time: “It may not have helped things that a 600-foot tanker loaded with oil and a barge collided Wednesday in the Mississippi River in New Orleans, leaving a 12-mile long oil slick in the river and closing a 29-mile stretch of the river. Television stations reported the stench of diesel fuel wafting across the French Quarter.”

*** Obama’s turn before the VFW: Before McCain’s oil rig visit, Obama addresses the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Orlando, FL -- a day after McCain told the group about Obama’s “ambition to be president” and declared that “both candidates in this election pledge to end this war and bring our troops home. The great difference is that I intend to win it first.” Per the campaign, Obama “will discuss his veterans policies and his commitment to continuing support for America’s service men and women after their deployments have ended.” (Of course, whether Floridians will notice Obama in the state due to preparations for Fay is another story.) After that, he embarks on a two-and-a-half day economic bus tour through North Carolina and then Virginia.

*** Downballot spotlight: NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann looks at the Senate race in North Carolina. When state Sen. Kay Hagan was battling through primary season against fellow Democrat Jim Neal, some observers joked that the race was generating a lot of hot air just to select a doormat for incumbent GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole to step on in November. But since buckling in for the general election, Hagan has shown that she's not taking this one lying down. Her campaign went up with ads last week, and the DSCC is already pumping cash into TV buys attacking Dole as a status-quo Bush Republican. (The most recent DSCC ad, in which two grizzled men in rocking chairs debate whether Dole is "92" or "93" -- a reference, respectively, to her voting record with Bush and to her effectiveness ranking in the Senate -- caused a stir for its perceived potshot at the age of the 72-year-old Dole.)

*** A strong Dem ticket? Dole remains a force to be reckoned with in the Tar Heel State, Dann adds. Polls show her up by a small (but significant) margin, and her name recognition is sky-high in comparison to the relatively unknown Hagan, who was not the first pick of Democrats who tried in vain to recruit a more popular candidates like outgoing Gov. Mike Easley. But there's definitely a sense of vulnerability in Dole's poll numbers. Hagan hopes to benefit from skyrocketing voter registration numbers in the hard-fought presidential primary state. And it doesn't hurt that she rounds out a Democratic ticket that includes Obama (who’s a magnet for young and minority voters) and Bev Perdue (a strong female candidate for North Carolina governor). Keep an eye on this race for a reality check on how long Obama's coattails may be, and the degree to which this year's dismal approval ratings for Congress have turned "incumbent" into a dirty word. Also, talk about a glass ceiling test -- the top three candidates on the North Carolina Dem ballot are a black man and two white women.

*** On the trail: McCain tours an oil rig in New Orleans, LA and then holds meetings in the Big Easy. Obama addresses the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Orlando, FL, speaks via satellite to United Food and Commercial Workers Conference in Canada, and then heads to Raleigh, NC for a town hall.

Obama is such a celebrity. He's now making annoucments stating that there will soon be an announcement. Britney and Paris are so proud of him.
To All Americans Who Care About The Truth:

Most people I believe would like to think they make a difference, especially honest journalists. Edward R. Murrow did not go after Joseph McCarthy because of their political differences, he went after Senator McCarthy because he was a liar and he needed to be exposed. And like Murrow, I don’t believe Keith Olbermann went after Senator McCain last night in his Special Comments because of political differences; I’m sure he did it because it was the right thing to do. He went out on a limb when for some unexplained reason, no one but a very few will. It was said many years ago that you couldn’t necessarily define “it” but you knew when someone had it. The word that comes to my mind today is “class”. I’m not sure I can describe it. What I do know is when a person has it, I recognize it immediately. Keith Olbermann shows this country every night what it is.

Whether his program will make a difference or not on election day is not the point. What is the point is that he does what a free and democratic media is supposed to do. Question our government to get at the truth. That is why he has John Dean, Jonathan Turley & Rachel Maddow on his program so often. What we have is a journalist who will not sell out to his viewers. In 2008, we now consider this to be a very special quality. That is how far we have fallen unfortunately. It appears that the more cable “news” programs we have available, the more shallow the “news” itself becomes. The important stories are not covered; instead we get opinions from conservatives who sound more and more like the gang from the Nixon Administration every day. They can’t handle the truth, so they lie. And write letters to NBC complaining about coverage. Evidently what Fox Propaganda does is perfectly acceptable to Rick Davis.

So whether Keith challenges Democrats or Republicans is not important. All we want is for someone in the media to do their job. Keith Olbermann does his job. MSNBC is lucky to have him and we as viewers are too. As I write this, one more word comes to mind when describing Mr. Olbermann - integrity. Considering what we have all been through the last 8 years and what we are yet again witnessing from the right wing (win at all costs and use our veterans, religion, war mongering, lies and exploitation to get elected), Keith is indispensible to not only his viewers, but to every single person in this country who gives a damn.

I am vary disappointed in FR today.
1) no mention of the Lie I mean mis representation by Obama on his stance for abortion in the interview he gave Saturday.
2) No mention of NBC reporter Andrea Michaell reporting Obama innuendo as fact. Hmmmmmmm
{ noticed Obama had a feistier tone in his stump yesterday. }

Obama has to scramble and do something to take the attention away from the disaster of a townhall he had with Rick Warren. "Above his pay grade" - give me a break. The man is running for President, so he better have an opinion on when life begins. Obama is such an academic dweeb.
i say its somebody that no pundit has been thinking of that will be obama's VP.  Obama is going to do great at the VFW.  his policies towards veterans are great.

Clinton is a loose canon!  He knows exactly what he is doing and will sabatoge Obama any chance he gets!  Where are these party leaders who need to sit Clinton down and have a talk w/him.  He is paving the way to be blamed if Obama fails to become President.
I find it amusing that the chump who has run for president twice is calling the new guy ambitious.  The guy has zero credibility.
“both candidates in this election pledge to end this war and bring our troops home. The great difference is that I intend to win it first.”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

McCain's obsession with "winning, honor, glory, and winning" is starting to reveal his true motives: McCain is trying to make up for his loss in Vietnam. McCain wants to prove that HE can win.

This is all about McCain trying to make up for the war he lost. He crashed his plane, then got caught and beaten up for 5 years. And we did NOT "win" Vietnam. So McCain is on this quest to prove himself... and to make someone else pay for what he went through.

He is not a warmonger out of a desire to shed blood, he's a warmonger because that's the only way he can address whatever inadequacies he feels about his own performance in Vietnam. Yes, I know he's a war hero - but as a soldier, he did NOT succeed in anything.
McSurge is on this "surge" trip again. I am so happy Keith O. ripped him a new last night on countdown.

"Grow up" old man, you will be 72 yrs. old this year start acting like it...LOL

Good stuff!
The media drives me crazy!  How could you say McCain did much better at the VFW speech!  All he does is yell more and pound the desk more!  Big deal!  He talked a bunch of lies about Obama not supporting the troops when he was the one who didn't vote for the bill.  He claims it was because he didn't like some of the things that were in it, but I remember him stating previously that we shouldn't offer free college to troops because it would encourage them to leave the service!!! Why don't you guys challenge him on that!  You all say you can't know for sure if McCain knew the questions Saturday night, Then how did he know to answer yes, yes, and get the bad teachers a new job?  YouTube is doing a better job than you guys!!!

Perhaps we should offer Senator McCain an ambassadorship to Georgia and/or Iraq - since that is what excites him.

Eight years of focusing the countries attention on everything except healthcare, housing, and energy is what has led us to our current state of turmoil.  Like John McCain said - AMERICA is still waiting on an AMERICAN President.

John "We are all Georgians" McCain doesn't seem to be applying for the job.

--------------------------------------------------

That's the problem: For all of McCain's blather about "putting country first," he's actually not very interested in this country, except as the place where he gets the troops to fight his wars.

Under McCain, the nation's infrastructure will continue to crumble. While McCain is busy moving little plastic war ships around on maps in the situation room, the health care, housing, and general economic problems will go unatteneed (unless the problems impact the wealthy.

We need someone who is interested in those boring domestic issues, and it ain't McCain.
He is paving the way to be blamed if Obama fails to become President.

Things that John McCain (and the media) doesn't want to talk about:
- Renewed violence in Afghanistan, resulting in the death of 10 French soldiers, and more than 20 injured near Kabul. This comes on the heels of attacks on the US base there in recent days.

Magoo can win the week thanks to the media. I believe the media is afraid of him. NOT A SINGLE JOURNALIST HAS SIMPLY ASKED, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO HELP MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS NOW? He gets away will empty rhetoric while Obama is away.

This may actually be good for Obama. No one is paying attention now. If Obama feels pressure, he may fight harder after the convention when it counts.
I worry for a nation that complains about the state of our education system (i.e. performance in science, math compared to other countries) and then blasts a candidate (Obama) who values education and academic success (Yes, Sally in Buffalo, this is you).  It is not about having a Ph.D. -- it is about valuing intellectual honesty and debate.

I am pretty sure God is the one who knows when life begins -- not John McCain and not Rick Warren (just so you know, God is above McCain's paygrade even if he was a P.O.W.).

I do not care who had the best soundbyte.  I care about who gave the best answers.  Please stop dumbing down the electorate (CHUCK TODD).

Huh? Are we electing a President or a Pope? I don't want a President telling me what I should believe regarding the soul. And for your information, most Americans agree with me.
I think a great ad for the DNC to buy during McCain's announcement would be to list all the times he voted against funding for Katrina victims. And that shot of him eating birthday cake with Bush.

Pat: "So whether Keith challenges Democrats or Republicans is not important. All we want is for someone in the media to do their job. Keith Olbermann does his job."
------------------------------------------

You're right. Olbermann's report on the "cone of silence" fiasco was highly informative.

The McCain campaign got caught "protesting too much." When they were whining about NBC bias, they were the ones who inadvertently revealed that McCain was in his limo and not in the alleged cone of silence for the first half hour that Obama spoke. I didn't know that until Olbermann explained it.

Whether or not McCain used this opportunity to cheat is beside the point. He broke the agreed-upon rules. With only a few exceptions like Olbermann, few journalists have any concern for integrity. In fact, they seem to admire politicians (like Karl Rove) who cheat and lie but get away with it.
So whether Keith challenges Democrats or Republicans is not important. All we want is for someone in the media to do their job. Keith Olbermann does his job
----------------------------------------------------
If he did his job as you claim, then he would challenge BOTH Democrats and Republicans.  He doesn't challenge Obama, ever.  He only excoriates McCain and praises Obama.  Sorry, no candidate is 100% wrong as he claims McCain is and no candidate is 100% right as he claims Obama is.  If he just once would take on the left, then he would give himself some credibility.  But his show is a one-hour long hate-filled rant, it's not news.
Enclosed find the exact quote from the Times:

"Former President Bill Clinton on Monday praised Senator Barack Obama’s energy policy at the opening of the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas.

But Mr. Clinton also lauded Mr. Obama’s rival, Senator John McCain, and said that either candidate would be progressive on the issue of climate change.

“Obviously, I favor Senator Obama’s energy positions, and Democrats have been by and large the more forward-leaning actors,” Mr. Clinton said. “But John McCain has the best record of any Republican running for president on the energy issue and on climate change.” He added, “I’m very encouraged about where the presidential rhetoric is in this campaign.”

Mr. Clinton’s remarks opened the two-day summit, held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and organized by Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, and John Podesta, Mr. Clinton’s former chief of staff.

Mr. Clinton challenged Nevada to tap its abundant wind and sunlight to become the first carbon-neutral state. He also questioned the recent rush to support offshore drilling."

And notice I didn't call you a moron, even though you are.

If he doesn't have an opinion on when life begins, how does he form his opinions on abortion? Obama dropped the ball on this one.   That was almost as ignorant as the 'toughest decision he ever made, opposing the Iraq War'...the Iraq War he didn't have to cast a vote on.  No one cared about the decision of a state senator to oppose the war.
It appears to me that John McCain has to "win" at something for being in the bottom 5 of his class at Annapolis. His father and grandfather were 4 star Admirals. He almost flunked out. He turned the USS Forrestal into an inferno. He got shot down and was a POW and denounced the US as a POW "songbird"
I guess if he couldn't become and Admiral all he needs to do to "unembarrass" himself to his father and grandfather is to become Commander-In-Chief to be able to "pull rank" on the Admirals in his family.
Quite the reason to run for President!!

Obama 08/12
Tommy: "McCain's obsession with 'winning, honor, glory, and winning' is starting to reveal his true motives: McCain is trying to make up for his loss in Vietnam. McCain wants to prove that HE can win."

I think there's something to that. McCain frequently has referenced his belief that if Washington hadn't meddled, the military could have "won" Vietnam.

Never mind that most analysts have moved on to now acknowledge that there was no "winning" in Vietnam unless we were willing to commit genocide. We were the outsiders; the invaders - no different than the Japanese or French before us.

But McCain clings to that sense of shame that his efforts were wasted by a national government that wouldn't let the military do what it had to do. He wants to make up for that "failure" now.
I don't know about anyone else, but I think Biden is a fantastic pick!  It shows that Obama is humble enough to know what all great man need to know, that he doesn't know everything.  He recognizes that he has a weakness in foreign policy experience and he wants to correct it.  He doesn't care that it might in fact showcase his lack of foreign policy experience even more.  Pundits be damned!  Go Obama!

"Still, the upsides of picking that day: ... it steps on McCain's 72nd birthday a tad[.]"

I don't agree at all. In fact, I think it reinforces it. Every single news bulletin will note something like, "This afternoon, on his 72nd birthday, John McCain announced his Vice-Presidential nominee." No newscaster nor pundit is going to fail to mention that John McCain turns 72 that day. It's a HORRIBLE day to announce anything, because if he has the news coverage, it will be noted that it's his birthday. Otherwise, the media would be focusing on Obama and the post-convention fallout, virtually forgetting about McCain the way they have for the rest of this campaign.

Apparently you missed Olberman's special comments about Obama's FISA vote - he ripped into him too.
While George McBush is standing on the platform of that oil rig in New Orleans, the people should reflect on what this man was doing while New Orleans was battered by Katrina. What was he doing to help the displaced, the hungry, and even the dead. I didn't hear him make any heartfelt sentiments as he did when he stated, "We are all Georgians." He should have answered that Katrina was US's moral disappointment, but he appears to have more empathy for the Georgians than for the people of New Orleans.

George McBush and the Republican party are an oil slick on this country and it would appear that, according to the polls, the voters are willing and ready to put this War Mongerer in office. America will not survive another war anywhere. We need to wake up and remember that under Republican rule, our debt is astronomical, our soldiers are war weary and dying every day for the love of oil, the economy is shot to hades, and McBush is promising more of the same! Clearly we are not better off than we were 8 yrs ago.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
and Obama should announce his Sec of State the day after Mccain announces...Clinton anyone?  Obama Biden Clinton attacking the worlds issues...

Well CR, God isn't telling us when life begins, so we're just going to have to make due with what we have now aren't we? Obama dodged the question. He has voted and supported every pro-abortion bill that has crossed his nicotine stained finger tips - so by his support of those bills, he has said he knows when life begins. Obama is a coward for not admitting to his stance.
