Obama: Don't question my patriotism

Posted: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 12:38 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ORLANDO, FL -- A day after John McCain told the Veterans of Foreign Wars that Barack Obama would "choose the path of retreat and failure for America" regarding the conflict in Iraq, the Illinois senator demanded before the same group today that McCain not question his patriotism.

"I have never suggested that Sen. McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it, because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America’s national interest. Now it’s time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same," Obama declared in a roughly 30-minute speech to an audience of 3,000 here.

"Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain. When I look out at this audience, I see people of different political views. You are Democrats and Republicans and independents. But you all served together, and fought together, and bled together under the same proud flag. You did not serve a Red America or a Blue America -- you served the United States of America.

Obama drew applause when he said the candidates should instead focus on the issues. “Let’s have a serious debate, and let’s debate our disagreements on the merits of policy -- not on personal attacks,” he said. “No matter how heated it gets or what kind of campaign he chooses to run, I will honor Sen. McCain’s service, just like I honor the service of every veteran in this room, and every American who has worn the uniform of the United States of America.”

In his speech, Obama laid out the case for his ability to deal effectively with world affairs, providing a point-by-point rebuttal to his rival’s argument that he had more ambition than judgment. He also touched on his plans for veterans in the areas of education and health care.

Obama said McCain had offered a “typical laundry list of political attacks.”

“He said that I have changed my position on Iraq when I have not. He said that I am for a path of 'retreat and failure.' And he declared, that 'Behind all of these claims and positions by Sen. Obama lies the ambition to be president' -- suggesting, as he has many times before, that I put personal ambition before my country,” Obama said. “Now that is John McCain’s prerogative. He can run that kind of campaign, and -- frankly -- that’s how political campaigns have been run in recent years. But I believe the American people are better than that. I believe that this defining moment demands something more of us.”

The presumptive Democratic nominee argued he had shown better judgment than McCain when it came to the war in Iraq, which he opposed, said the Arizona senator had followed his lead on calling for more troops for Afghanistan. Obama also criticized McCain for what he characterized as his unwillingness to track down Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

“A year ago, I said that we must take action against bin Laden and his lieutenants if we have them in our sights and Pakistan cannot or will not act,” he said. “Sen. McCain criticized me and claimed that I was for 'bombing our ally.' So for all of his talk about following Osama bin Laden to the Gates of Hell, Sen. McCain refused to join my call to take out bin Laden across the Afghan border. Instead, he spent years backing a dictator in Pakistan who failed to serve the interests of his own people.”

The McCain campaign sent out a statement saying Obama doubted McCain’s commitment to finding bin Laden, simply because he had not “projected an outspoken intention to bomb territories” in an ally. “Unlike Barack Obama, John McCain doesn’t have to compensate for a lack of credibility on the international stage with inflammatory and public threats against American allies,” said spokesman Tucker Bounds. “The American people know that John McCain will hunt down terrorists wherever they are, and have a choice between strength and experience versus Barack Obama’s rhetoric and theatrics.”

In his remarks, Obama also argued that the crisis in Georgia underscored the need for an engaged America. But he said the United States had been distracted, its resources overstretched and its alliances frayed.

"For months, I have called for active international engagement to resolve the disputes over South Ossetia and Abkhazia. I made it crystal clear before, at the beginning of, and during this conflict that Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected, and that Georgia should be integrated into transatlantic institutions,” he said. “I have condemned Russian aggression, and today I reiterate my demand that Russia abide by the cease-fire. Russia must know that its actions will have consequences.”

He added that he was joining Sen. Joe Biden in calling for an additional $1 billion in reconstruction assistance to the country. Biden, whose name has been mentioned on the short list of possible vice presidential candidates, traveled to Georgia over the weekend.

Furthermore, Obama hit McCain for opposing a new GI bill and criticized what he suggested was an effort to privatize the VA, after McCain spoke yesterday about the Veterans’ Care Access Card he has proposed.

“We need to get rid of means-testing. Every veteran should be allowed into the VA system. My opponent takes a different view,” he said. “He wants to ration care so the VA only serves combat injuries, while everyone else gets an insurance card. While the VA needs some real reform to better serve those who have worn the uniform, privatization is just not the answer. We cannot risk our veterans’ health care by turning the VA into just another health insurer. We need to make sure the VA is strong enough to treat every veteran who depends on it.”

McCain said Monday that the card was intended for any veteran with an “illness or injury incurred during their military service, and by those with low incomes” and called it an expansion of the VA -- not privatization.

go get 'em Obama!!!

It's about time that Americans fought back and stopped letting the Republicans win elections by painting Democrats as "wimps" . . . just because someone disagrees with your politics doesn't mean that they love the country any less than you do

Veteran's & active duty Military Men & Women know that when thier called to Fight, they want to Fight for a Reason.GWB, along with MCain, plus many Democrats"Cut & Run" from the real fight against what they call Islamic Extremist. The War for Oil in Iraq is'nt what our Troop's are supposed to be used for.
We were Attacked by al-quida from the confines of Afghanistan. GWB, instead of using World alliances to crush this Islamist Extremism 7 years ago chose to "Cut & Run" from the fight with bin laden.Cowboy my ASS, maybe one on a Wooden stick(from my childhood days).

Our Troop's know that Barack is gonna take them from the sandbox & put them where they know the fight is & has been for 7 year's now.The Pakistan border is the Most dangerous place in the World. Barack proved his Knowledge of World Affair's some month's ago, when he said(and was vilfied for)that if pakistan's goveernment would'nt act against al-quida & the taliban, he would upon becoming POTUS.Soon afterwards, thats exacly what the so-called Cowboy(GWB) did & has taken out a couple of al-quida opperatives in the process.

Barack, may not have served in the Military(lots of American's have'nt),but his Knowledge & Judgement of complex Military affair's are much better than GWB & his bunch of 'Cut & Run Cowards" ever dreamed of.

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over!!!
It would be interesting to know ... what was the crowd's reaction to Obama's remarks vs McCain's?  As an historically Republican group, did Obama make inroads?
He is such a phony.  When did he ever call for resolution to disputes in South Ossetia?  He'd never even heard of it before the incident two weeks ago.
Way to go, Obama! Hit George McBush back hard on character questions. Whatever happened to McBush's pledge to run a clean campaign. Smear and Fear will not go unanswered this time around---NOT THIS TIME!

I love the way Obama makes the point that McCain, who is running solely on his POW status, has done little if anything for the veterans he claims to care for so much. Just another example of smoke and mirrors from Team McCain. He ought to take this show to Vegas.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT EVEN THOUGH THE REPUBLICANS AND JOHN MCCAIN DON'T WANT US TO TALK ABOUT HOW WE GOT INTO THIS WAR THAT HAS COST US LIVES AND TREASURE

THE ADMINISTRATION, JOHN MCCAIN AND THE REPUBLICANS TOOK US TO WAR ON FALSE INTELLIGENCE

WE HAVE HAD MANY COME FORWARD AND SAY THIS WAS INTENTIONAL

THE LIVES LOST IN THIS WAR ARE ASTRONOMICAL

THE FAMILIES DESTROYED OR STRUGGLING ARE MANY

THE STRUGGLING AMERICANS IN THE RECESSION FROM A WAR BROUGH ON CREDIT AND THE AMOUNT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE $4.9BILLION DEFICIT

OUR CHILDREN WILL PAY FOR THIS DEFICIT AND THE TRILLIONS NOT LISTED IN THE DEFICIT BORROWED FOR THE WAR

AMERICANS DON'T FORGET THAT JOHN MCCAIN WAS UP FRONT SUPPORTING THE WAR, SAID IT WAS WON, YET TODAY KEEPS SAYING WE MUST HAVE VICTORY

JOHN MCCAIN SAID IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE WAR THAT DICK CHANEY WOULD BE IN HIS ADMINISTRATION BECAUSE THE WAR WAS SUCH A SUCCESS

ONLY TO FIND OUT LATER THAT THIS WAR WAS FULL STEAM AHEAD WITH NO PLANNING TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THOSE LOST DUE TO POOR PLANNING AND

NOW JOHN MCCAIN WANT TO TALK ABOUT A WINNING SURGE AFTER ALL THIS DESTRUCTION WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD BRAGG ABOUT A SURG

SOMETHING HERE IS CLEARLY WRONG AMERICA
McCain does not support the troops. He has voted against a number of bills that help the troops.McCain does side with whatever country his neo-con-hot headed high priced lobbyist tell him too. That how McMain puts Country First.
Oh Barry grow up and don't be such a whiner. It's definitely not a quality I'm looking for in my next President.  Well, then again, you don't possess ANY quality that would warrant you to be President of the U.S.

Go John McCain '08
Now we're cooking with gas! This is exactly what I've been waiting for - looks like the week off did him some good.

Obama/Biden '08
Look what a little rest and relaxation gets you....Feisty Barack! I love it.

Obama/Biden (or Clarke)
WOW! It is about time Obama took the gloves off!  He needs to put McWar in his place. However, I am still going to vote for McCain... as we have waited for Armagedden long enough!!!
Good job Senator Obama. McSurge is an old mess and needs to clean up his act.

FR: Will Al Gore make a speech at the convention? If so, this will be great and I can't wait to watch.
It's about time that Senator Obama began attacking Senator McCain on the issues and on his unwarranted attacks.  The past eight years have just about destroyed this country and yet there are some who want to continue these policies by voting for a Republican administration AGAIN.  Even the thought of that "defeats" me.

The issue of lying is too easily dismissed by the press and, generally, by the American public.  The results of lying are pervasive – it affects all of us in every aspect of our lives.  If one delves deeply into the causes of war, the end of marriages, the loss or jobs, the failures of endeavors, the end of friendship, ENRON, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, the fossil fuel issue, the events of Katrina, politics, (- - - and on) one will find that lies have created each and every failure.   This is WHY the lies told by Senator McCain’s campaign are such a serious issue and this is why the new books on Obama are such a grave issue.  When Senator McCain calls each and every one of them “just a joke” – “where’s your sense of humor?” it makes the issue even more disturbing.  We are no longer children on the play ground when the taunts of other students are easily dismissed as “a joke”.  We are adults and our “playground” has become a much more serious issue.  It is not only the world, but it is YOUR back yard.  It is has become a battlefield – literally and figuratively.

For those who use Christianity as a basis for your everyday life and still pass on unfounded “truths”, you are denying the basic tenets of your beliefs.  True faith is not built on words, it is built on action.  It is by our deeds that we give example of faith and become a testament to others.

OBAMA SHOULD NOT BE UPSET WITH MCCAIN, MANY PEOPLE QUESTION HIS PATRIOTISM.  FIRST YEAR I WILL VOTE FOR A REPUBLICIAN.
McCain cheated on his first wife and left her and the kids, and than married a woman 25 years younger than him, he is not a man of good values or character.

Kudo's to you Senator Obama, I don't think McNuts knows any other way to campaign, he is in a losing battle, making himself look more and more like a bigger idiot than he already is and his childish name calling is the only thing he knows how to do right now at least by himself.  You are gonna blow him away when it comes to the debates, that is if he even remembers what the question was.  Sad so sad to see such a pityful worthless person running to be the president of our country.  It will definately be one of the saddest days in the history of the US if by any chance he wins.  We must make sure that doesn't happen!!!!!!!  Maybe for his 72nd birthday (god can you imagine a 72 year old running the country) we can send him the book computer for dummies!!!!
Finally!!!!!! Put the muzzle on the old man!
obama has to keep pandering to the under-30 crowd.  If he goes more than 3 or 4 days without giving them attention, they'll go back to their PlayStation's and forget to vote in Nov.  It's a full-time job keeping them and the AA voters from zoning out.  He doesn't seem to notice that the core of this Party is fleeing him in droves. Oh well, Hillary 2012!
Bobbi, Eau Claire, WI (Sent Monday, August 18, 2008 4:13 PM)
*****************************************************
So every American who’s under 30 or African American is stupid? Wow Bobbi I knew you were ignorant but I had no idea you were a complete and utter racist! You just clearly stated that every black man and women in America does not have the mental fortitude to remember to vote in November. You are obviously too stupid yourself to remember that your hero Hillary would not have been first lady if it wasn’t for African Americans and people under 30 voting for Bill Clinton. Really nice post Bobbi! You can crawl back under your rock now.

It's hard to question what you don't have Obama. There is no question who is the patriot in this election, and it's not you.

-------------------------------------------

Is the McCain Campaign THAT stupid?

If Osama bin Laden is receiving aid from citizens of Pakistan then those individuals ARE NOT our ally.

If he will hunt down terrorists wherever they are, why not Pakistan?
The problem is that McCain knows he cannot get the upper hand unless he takes the lower road.  I'd like to see an ad with Cindy McCain swearing over and over that they wouldn't be running a negative campaign, interspersed with McCain's recent talking points.
McCain has more honesty, integrity, patriotism, and love of country then Obama can only dream of having. Obama barely understands Chicago politics, let alone international politics. The man is a first class neophyte (still got that dictionary handy libs?).

Wow, look who got a thesaurus for Christmas.  I guess all the college book learnin' I dun was no good, huh Mr. New Yawk City man?

If McCaw has all that stuff - then (a) prove it (don't just say it was because he was a POW) and (b) tell me why that automatically makes him a better president?

Stumped, huh?  Thought so - I could here your head explode from here.  You cons always dish it out but you can't actually respond to OUR questions.
This game of being Unpatriotic was played for all it's worth on Americans

Americans lost jobs for speaking out against the war, Bill Mahr, Whoopi Goldberg, and thousands of others

McCain & his Republicans Buddies took us to war on a lie

Now they want to pretend it never happened and keep saying, "THAT WAS THE PAST LESS DON'T LOOK BACK AND TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR THE COUNTRY IN THE FUTURE:

IF AMERICANS BUY THIS LINE AFTER HAVING BEEN ON THE RECEIVING END OF THIS WAR WITH THE  WORST RECESSION SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET

WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR AMERICANS TO GET IT  RIGHT THIS TIME, FOR THEMSELVES AND FOR THEIR CHILDREN

WE WERE TREATED LIKE WE WERE IN RUSSIA OR CHINA AND COULD NOT MAKE A NEGATIVE COMMENT ABOUT THE WAR.

THAT WAS THE US FOLK THE U.S. AND THEY PULLED IT OFF

NOW AFTER 4,000+LIVES LOST, FAMILIES HARMED FOR LIFE, SOLDIERS WAITING IN LINE FOR TREATMENT FROM THE WAR FOR INJURIES PHYSICAL AND MENTAL,

AMERICANS LOOSING HOMES, JOBS, PENSIONS, GAS PRICES

THE REPUBLICANS AND JOHN MCCAIN ARE ASKING US TO GIVE THE JUST ONE MORE CHANCE

AMERICAN CANNNOT AFFORD ONE MORE CHANCE WITH THESE GUYS

THEY HAVE RUN OUR LIVELY HOOD AND OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURES INTO THE GROUND AND

THAT 84BILLION DOLLARS THEY PAID CONTRACTORS FROM THE U.S., THE $4.8 BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT AND THE TRILLIONS BORROWED TO FIGHT THE WAR ON CREDIT MUST BE PAID BY

YOU AND ME AND OUR CHILDREN AND GENERATIONS TO COME
1st Read, why won't you post my comment about GWB being a " Cut & Runner" ? I've tried for over a week & you still won't post it. Scared of the commentary to come from it?

Maybe it's just cacheing & moderation that keep's it from being posted? What a joke for socalled political punditry, to be scared of opposing comment's.
Obama is a patriot. It's just not clear for what country.
America does not know what McCain will do if he becomes President besides maybe continuing to rattle his empty saber.  For Tucker Bounds to speak for me, saying "The American people know that John McCain will hunt down terrorists.....", blah, blah, blah, is ridiculous.  Don't include all American's in your rhetoric Tucker Bounds, you arrogant little pecker head!  I support Obama and I'm offended to be included in your class of republican cronies as you continue to speak for all of the American people.
Obama would HAVE to love this country to subject himself to this type of scrutiny and danger.  McCain is focusing on the issues......the issues are you,Barack.  If McCain didn't have you, his messsage would be blah blah blah blah......
So John McCain says "I know evil and I'll follow Osama bin Laden to the Gates of Hell!" Then 2 days later his spokesman says people "...have a choice between strength and experience versus Barack Obama’s rhetoric and theatrics.”

Are you kidding me? McCain wasn't dealing in "rhetoric and theatrics” with that performance?

What a worthless bunch of hypocites McCain's campaign is proving to be and I'm the one who is straight talking here.
Oh Barack:

Why might believe this, but with your wife saying she was never proud of America and you hang out with people like William Ayres, who was a terrorist.  With a record like your's, your statement is a bit laughable.
McCain is a COWARD for stooping to such pathetic tactics. Yes, I said COWARD. I don't give a shit what he did 50 years ago, today he's acting like a coward because he doesn't have the balls to run against Obama on the issues. The man who recently claimed that he was determined to run a CIVIL campaign has ended up making some of the MOST disrespectful, unscrupulous accusations of anyone who's ever run for the office.

I'd say he should be ashamed of himself, but McCain has no shame.
Senator Obama has been far too respectful toward Senator McCain, for far too long.  McCain uses every opportunity to question Obama's patriotism and love of country, despite previous assurances that he was going to run a "respectful" campaign.

What a hypocrite.

John McCain and his band of Rovians need to be shown that this tired, ugly approach of destroying an opponent does nothing to help America.  I only hope enough Americans can see that this is indeed the same old approach that gave us Bush-Cheney.  John McCain will be no different, with the same team running his show.
He's Baaaak!!!
So, Obama's ambition to become president is a negative, yet this is McCain's second time to run for president and we're to believe he isn't "ambitious"?
Ambition is only a negative when you will say anything/do anything (lying, distorting facts, etc.) to obtain your goal.  McCain should remember that people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!
Spoken like a true leader, Obama is so much more intelligent than McInsane, like Gen. Clark said, Being a POW doesn't make you Presidential material.

Obama for POTUS!
....If John McCain is an example of an American Hero....I'd rather take Popeye the Sailor.
Go Obama!!!!  Be tough. McCain is running a scare campaign. Tell Americans who he really is someone whose answer is always war. America needs someone who is intelligent not someone who wants to go to the gates of hell to find BinLaden. Let him go alone. Not take anymore of our children.Be tough. Your supportera want you to be tough. Expose him for who he really is.
Get him at those debates. He is so smug.
Americas interests are not served by a rookie Senator that runs away and hides his head in the sand every time there is a problem/.
NO I WILL QUESTION HIS PATRIOTISM.

1) he goes to Germany tells them how sorry we are for being such bad neighbors (sorry but even if the statement is true you don’t do that family business stays inside the family no whining to the Europeans)

2) He believes our military and this is his quote "Just bombs Villages and kills civilians"

3) He makes a big deal over why he wouldn’t wear a flag pin (it was never about not wearing it. it was his explanation)

So maybe if he didn’t go around bad mouthing America (Like you liberals love to do) he wouldn’t have his patriotism questioned.
Simply put, Bravo Sen. Obama, Bravo!

You have this Combat Veterans Support!
The more Sen. McCain says such reprehensible things about Sen. Obama, the more unfit to lead McCain appears. Having grace and mutual respect in light of your differences is the mark of a true leader. If McCain cannot treat a fellow Senator with a basic level of respect, how would he handle himself in delicate international conflicts? Everyday, it becomes clearer and clearer that our nation NEEDS Barack Obama as president.
“Unlike Barack Obama, John McCain doesn’t have to compensate for a lack of credibility on the international stage with inflammatory and public threats against American allies,”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

WHAT?!@?!?! I mean, are they serious??? That's ALL McCain does is talk tough about who's next on his war list. The McCain campaign is full of thugs and liars.
Good report Athena. How was he received by the audience?
McSoundbite told Rick Warren he "knows how to find Bin Laden"

McButtkiss also tells us repeatedly about how close he is to Gen. Petraeus, who he calls one of the greatest military commanders in American history.

So why not tell the great General how to get Bin Laden?  Because you're saving it until after you get elected?

Political ambition first, avenging the deaths of innocent Americans second, country last
Now we're seeing the True Obama! Whiny and complaining all the time.

And no Obama, you don't have the Americas best interests in mind. You're a Citizen of the World, remember? You said so yourself.
Issues over personal attacks, wiil the media let that happen?
Remember boys and girls you are part of the process, will you let the issues resonate by reporting them?
I don't have much confidence in that happening.
Show me I am wrong!
It's okay to question Senator Obama's patriotism JUST AS LONG AS WE ALSO QUESTION Senator McCain's patriotism.  Why is one fair game and other not?

As to McCain's patriotism, last night on Rachel Maddow's show, a caller who had attended the Naval Academy at the same time as Senator McCain defended his finish in the bottom five of their class by arguing that McCain isn't stupid ... he just had other interests than those "technical" courses the Naval Academy was offering.

Well.  I presume the Navy wouldn't waste its time offering its best and brightest anything that wasn't important.  So ask yourself this:  Was it truly patriotic for Senator McCain to have blown off these classes in favor of other things that were more interesting to him?  (The caller said he liked to read novels instead of concentrating on his studies.)  Is he guilty of the same derelictions now, given how little attention he pays to economic issues that don't relate to oil?  And ... can we truly count on him to care about ALL the issues that are important to Americans, or will he, like the current White House incumbent, prefer (metaphorical) brush clearing to his job.

Because we don't need another president asleep at the switch.  If anything is NOT patriotic, it's that.
Refuse to tolerate the election of another dumb, old, angry, coporate robot to the presidency. My children & your children cannot afford that mistake. This election is that simple! (For those of your who earn $250,000 or more annually - Sorry. The majority of Americans are tired of B.O.H.I.C.A. from the top 5%)
McSurge is hilarious.  When....or if :-(....  Americans see through this canned, scripted republican nonsense, this election will be over.

RNC cookbook:
1. play dirty
2. be negative
3. avoid issues
4. cook/burn/overheat for 4 yrs and repeat step one
How can Obama love America as much as McCain, when Obama doesn't view the world as a Marvel comic book?

Nuance, complexity? Very un-patriotic stuff. All true, happy (cold) warriors only see things in their most simplistic forms - good vs evil, us vs them, wars won by winning 'em, etc.

Okay, all joking aside, maybe McCain's problem is that he looks at Russia and only sees the old bear, as Solzhenitzen might, rather than the irony and hypocrisy that might be present on all sides, such as a different author might... George Orwell.

Now, as to how the bear fits in with terrorism, that's a bit of a leap. But mark my words... its coming. We'll start to see McCain pushing the notion that Russia is facilitating international terrorism.
And if Obama says he's a Hippo, will that mean he wallows in the water?
