Obama: Don't question my patriotism

Posted: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 12:38 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ORLANDO, FL -- A day after John McCain told the Veterans of Foreign Wars that Barack Obama would "choose the path of retreat and failure for America" regarding the conflict in Iraq, the Illinois senator demanded before the same group today that McCain not question his patriotism.

"I have never suggested that Sen. McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it, because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America’s national interest. Now it’s time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same," Obama declared in a roughly 30-minute speech to an audience of 3,000 here.

"Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain. When I look out at this audience, I see people of different political views. You are Democrats and Republicans and independents. But you all served together, and fought together, and bled together under the same proud flag. You did not serve a Red America or a Blue America -- you served the United States of America.

Obama drew applause when he said the candidates should instead focus on the issues. “Let’s have a serious debate, and let’s debate our disagreements on the merits of policy -- not on personal attacks,” he said. “No matter how heated it gets or what kind of campaign he chooses to run, I will honor Sen. McCain’s service, just like I honor the service of every veteran in this room, and every American who has worn the uniform of the United States of America.”

In his speech, Obama laid out the case for his ability to deal effectively with world affairs, providing a point-by-point rebuttal to his rival’s argument that he had more ambition than judgment. He also touched on his plans for veterans in the areas of education and health care.

Obama said McCain had offered a “typical laundry list of political attacks.”

“He said that I have changed my position on Iraq when I have not. He said that I am for a path of 'retreat and failure.' And he declared, that 'Behind all of these claims and positions by Sen. Obama lies the ambition to be president' -- suggesting, as he has many times before, that I put personal ambition before my country,” Obama said. “Now that is John McCain’s prerogative. He can run that kind of campaign, and -- frankly -- that’s how political campaigns have been run in recent years. But I believe the American people are better than that. I believe that this defining moment demands something more of us.”

The presumptive Democratic nominee argued he had shown better judgment than McCain when it came to the war in Iraq, which he opposed, said the Arizona senator had followed his lead on calling for more troops for Afghanistan. Obama also criticized McCain for what he characterized as his unwillingness to track down Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

“A year ago, I said that we must take action against bin Laden and his lieutenants if we have them in our sights and Pakistan cannot or will not act,” he said. “Sen. McCain criticized me and claimed that I was for 'bombing our ally.' So for all of his talk about following Osama bin Laden to the Gates of Hell, Sen. McCain refused to join my call to take out bin Laden across the Afghan border. Instead, he spent years backing a dictator in Pakistan who failed to serve the interests of his own people.”

The McCain campaign sent out a statement saying Obama doubted McCain’s commitment to finding bin Laden, simply because he had not “projected an outspoken intention to bomb territories” in an ally. “Unlike Barack Obama, John McCain doesn’t have to compensate for a lack of credibility on the international stage with inflammatory and public threats against American allies,” said spokesman Tucker Bounds. “The American people know that John McCain will hunt down terrorists wherever they are, and have a choice between strength and experience versus Barack Obama’s rhetoric and theatrics.”

In his remarks, Obama also argued that the crisis in Georgia underscored the need for an engaged America. But he said the United States had been distracted, its resources overstretched and its alliances frayed.

"For months, I have called for active international engagement to resolve the disputes over South Ossetia and Abkhazia. I made it crystal clear before, at the beginning of, and during this conflict that Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected, and that Georgia should be integrated into transatlantic institutions,” he said. “I have condemned Russian aggression, and today I reiterate my demand that Russia abide by the cease-fire. Russia must know that its actions will have consequences.”

He added that he was joining Sen. Joe Biden in calling for an additional $1 billion in reconstruction assistance to the country. Biden, whose name has been mentioned on the short list of possible vice presidential candidates, traveled to Georgia over the weekend.

Furthermore, Obama hit McCain for opposing a new GI bill and criticized what he suggested was an effort to privatize the VA, after McCain spoke yesterday about the Veterans’ Care Access Card he has proposed.

“We need to get rid of means-testing. Every veteran should be allowed into the VA system. My opponent takes a different view,” he said. “He wants to ration care so the VA only serves combat injuries, while everyone else gets an insurance card. While the VA needs some real reform to better serve those who have worn the uniform, privatization is just not the answer. We cannot risk our veterans’ health care by turning the VA into just another health insurer. We need to make sure the VA is strong enough to treat every veteran who depends on it.”

McCain said Monday that the card was intended for any veteran with an “illness or injury incurred during their military service, and by those with low incomes” and called it an expansion of the VA -- not privatization.

Bounds can sneer with all the dismissive responses directed at Senator Obama, that the McCain campaign always lets fly with unbridled disdain.

The fact is that Bin Laden has been on the loose for EIGHT YEARS. He should have been captured, tried, and worm doo doo by now!

Hey Tucker, we, the majority of the American people can put two, and two together, and have deduced that you people either have no intention of quartering Bin Laden, or you are impotent wanna-bes who don't have the testicular fortitude to get the job done.

McCain's mantra that Obama is not a patriot is so wretchedly sick.

No wonder Diane can't resist calling him 'creepy' with understandable satisfaction.
When you all say McCain voted against bills that supported our troops, don't forget to mention how much pork fat the dems tried to include in those bills.  Some of which had nothing to do with the war or the troops.
yes Yes YES!  Lay the smack down Barack!  We have your back!!
Fellow democrats, we must stand up and join Obama as he fights back against the Republican smear machine.  NOW IS THE TIME!
Call, send e-mails, or write letters to your local news media DEMANDING that they expose the lies being spread by the Jerome Corsi's, Sean Hannity's, Bill O'Rilley's, Rush Limbaugh's and Glen Beck's of the world!!!
Let it be known, to all neo-cons on the far right, that WE WILL FIGHT YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.  You hit us once, we hit you twice with double the force.
You called down the thunder, well now you've got it!!
I'm so glad I choose Obama during the primaries. You can feel when someone is speaking the truth, can't you? I don't get that feeling listening to too many politicians.
It is so insane that all McCain can talk about is Obama - he obviously has no plan to talk about!  His commercials are a joke!

And what about Cindy's step-sister, that's never spoken of?  I was floored when I read that article!
Did the bad old man hurt wittle Barack's feelings? Maybe Michelle can get him a tissue?
Good job Senator Obama! McCain needs to be called out on every one of his lies, his distortions and his smears! Keep reminding people that this is just more of the same Republican brand of the past 8 years!
I think Barack Obama needs to go on vacations more often.  Because he surely seems to have returned refreshed.
Bush called me essentially a traitor for not being "with him" on the war.  Now McCain is calling me "fanatic" for being an Obama supporter and essentially a traitor for not following him.  And both calling Obama the same. I'm an American and I can have differing and voice beliefs different from the pres. I question the true understanding of what it is to be an american of those that diminish others for their stand on issues.  Where's Hillary's line when you need it.  Shame on you Bush and shame on you McCain.

Why is Liberman so close to McCain? Where did McCains money came from all these years in congress? I gusee those of us watched "Charlie Wilson's War" will know where McCain's money came from and how strong this lobby is.
How like John "I KNOW [insert topic here]" McCain to use patriotism and integrity as a weapon:

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."  --Hermann Goering, Hitler's designated successor and commander of the Luftwaffe
And isn't that like McCain?? if you don't agree with his assessment of the war, you must be willing to lose a war to win the election....

"Men in authority will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism, and find criticism subversive." -- Henry Steele Commager

--------------------
But I think Edward R. Murrow said it best:

"We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it."

That is the REAL American way and what Obama stands for. To insinuate anything else is to resort to the same tactics used by bullies and despots worldwide... and is THAT what we want for a president? oh, wait... that's what we already HAVE.

The equal pay legislation that McCain voted against with regard to women’s right to sue their employers when they receive unequal pay, was in reference to equal pay for doing the ‘SAME’ job, in the Same field, in the Same warehouse, for the Same employer, with SAME job description.

You rant with all the illiterate zeal of a true Limbaugh toadie.

They follow Joe Biden.  Well, in an ideal world that would keep the Libdem Obamanauts from crying "foul" about McCain "dispatching" U.S. senators for political reasons.

Undoubtedly some twisted reasoning will absolve Obama and Dems from "dispatching" a leading Veep candidate for political reasons.

Just watch.

Richard,

Come on Richard. You are better than this.

Georgia invited Biden to come. They solicited his help because of his credentials.

Lieberman, and Graham were dispatched by McCain early last week; days before Biden was called to the table. Biden moved with the speed, and precision of a fighter jet, while Joe, and Lindsey fumbled around like a couple of dufuses.

Biden is already back, and the whispering twins have yet to find their way out of the gate.

You're a good guy Richard, but Jeez Louise.
Paul, NY, NY - Tell us all - what qualities does John McCain have?

I really wish you GOP supporters talked about John McCain's qualification as much as you claim Barack Obama's lack of -

or are you just an idiot with no real substance or character ...

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
As a former Republican, I say "Hooray for Obama!"  I think McCain needs to stand down and shut up---until he has something constructive to say.  He's becoming a "funny uncle" in the proverbial attic....so long a part of the problem, he has no real answers.  Thus, he uses patriotism like a final refuge for a scoundrel. I believe all US citizens expect and deserve better!
Obama truly is a man of integrity.  He maintains the high road each and every time, even when provoked as McCain and his surrogrates do on a daily basis now, and he is showing everyday what he means when he advocates for changing our politics.  For those of you who are still not understanding what can be accomplished through a better politics, I urge you to consider - just for minute - how much we could get done with our many national problems if we had two level-headed, earnest individuals actually debating the issues and their proposed solutions (rather that two brute candidates demonizing one another just for the sake of "winning").  Demonizing the opponent is all we've known out of our candidates for far too long, and what has our government actually accomplished when it comes to healthcare, education, national security, etc due to the leaders we've chosen??  Think about that.  Not much, sadly.

I pray that the American people, regardless of whether they support Obama, can begin to understand the wisdom of Obama's stance on cleaning our politics.  Perhaps if McCain could also show some maturity and character on this issue, he will begin to actually discuss the issues.  Sadly, McCain has shown himself to be willing to do anything and everything for power that I doubt he will reflect.  My hope is that the American people will reflect soon and demand that McCain clean up his campaign tactics...or lose his support.  Again, I am not advocating for Obama or McCain here - I am merely advocating for adult discussion about what ails this country over what we've had for decades now (the bully vs bully "election").

This is all John McCain does! Has Russia not been our ally for years? Have they not worked with us to end nuclear activity in North Korea? Have they not worked with us to curb carbon emmisiions? Have they not worked with us towards nuclear proliferation? God I am so sick of slimy double speak and lies. All you McCain supporters out there. You may agree with McCain's policies and I am completely fine with that but how can you endure the outright lies that come from his camp on a daily basis? It's disgusting and has no place in the political process.

Can anyone point me to an article, website, or anything that indicates Obama was talking about South ossetia months ago?  For that matter can anyonr point to an article where Bush or McCain was talking abiout Ossetia months ago.

This is the kind of B.S. that causes people to doubt Obama.
Can anyone give me one instance of what Sen McCain's supposedly vast amount of experience has done to help our country or American's loyal to this country. I haven't been able to come up with any. I guess judgment will have to be the measuring stick this year.
What a classless act. McCain is trying to do the same thing to Obama that Bush did too him back in 2000. McCain + Partison Attacks = GWB! Who wants another 4 yrs of this crap! McCain has no ideals for America the issues are not infavor of the Republican and they have nominated Bob Dole again except Dole showed more class! The only Republican in Wash. that is worth anything is Chuck Hagel. McCain says that Obama will put becoming President ahead of the country. This only makes since to some old guy. The job Obama is running for is POTUS which mean you kinda have to want to do what good for the country. McCain is not being an honest man but what would you expect from a man who would cheat on his wife and then leave her fpr a younger woman! Say what you want about Bill at least he didn't leave Hillary for another woman! Most republican are fake when it come to taking the moral high ground. The same guy who cheats on his wife will cheat on a politica form by listen in on the questions.

Obama/Hagel 08 Real Unity
OBAMA HAS EVERY RIGHT TO BE UPSET.  MCCAIN IS A TYPICAL POLITICIAN THROWING EVERYTHING HE CAN AGAINST OBAMA TO SEE WHAT STICKS.  CALLING AN AMERICAN HERO LIKE OBAMA UNPATRIOTIC IS WHAT, IN FACT, MAKES JOHN W. MCCAIN AN AMERICAN TRAITOR.
FIRST YEAR I WILL BE VOTING DEMOCRATIC.
Thats all the Mcrove plan is and has been for the last 7 years,Distort, distract, attack, lie, decive, personal attacks, pander, warmonger, saber rattle, call anyone that dosn't agree with them wimps, cut and run, while the msm sucks this stuff up, since Bomber/Rove don't have any real plan, other then to bomb, bomb, bomb anyone, so they can to keep the folks at Haliburton,Blackwater,Caci,Krb,sucking this nation dry, while we fight to keep there Big Oil investments safe, fighting in Iraq.I've had my fill of there B.S.and there school boy tatics. We don't need another McBomber/Bush,they have done enough damage already.
Wonderful speech. This is the Obama we know who can tap into peoples emotions like we saw during the primaries against Hillary. He is back on message. He won over some votes among the Vets attending this speech and he will continue to be the front runner as long as he continues inciting people's emotions like we know he can. And he does not even need false "cross in the sand" stories to incite people's emotions.
I don't think Obama is being a whiner. I think he is just trying to tell Mccain to back off with his character assasination tactic's or he will have to fight fire with fire. Mccain's character would be very easy to assasinate and Obama would not even have to lie. Mccain has a closet full of skeleton's.
