Convo watch: Romney, party-crasher

Posted: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 9:02 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Romney "is to speak Tuesday at a counter-rally organized by Republicans in Denver near where Democrats will be gathered."

The AP: "Business and labor interests have donated millions to the Democratic and Republican convention host committees in exchange for premium seats and special access. Many institutions will also hold parties and receptions where lawmakers can get an earful -- though not more than a mouthful -- from lobbyists and their clients. New ethics restrictions have changed the comfort level for convention parties and receptions. The rules permit food and refreshment of a nominal value, but not a meal. That limitation has turned questions once left to the kitchen, such as when finger food is more than just an hors d'oeuvre, into head-scratching legal issues."

A little Illinois drama for "No Drama Obama"... "Democratic National Committee officials delivered a high-profile snub to Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Tuesday, announcing that three of his biggest potential rivals for re-election would be given speaking roles on the opening night of the party's nominating convention. But the beleaguered two-term governor, whose administration faces multiple federal investigations involving jobs, contracts and fundraising, is not scheduled to speak at the convention. DNC officials said state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, a longtime loyalist of Sen. Barack Obama, will be among the opening night speakers. Also on stage that night will be Comptroller Dan Hynes and Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan."

I can see why people aren't going to the conventions.  Finger food?  Standing, no chairs?  No Forks?  Man, those rules are really being enforced. Obama is supplying enough drama, should be the ultimate "drama queen"
Obama runs a lean mean political machine. when the conventioneers are hungry, they will need to pull out their own plastic. That is a good thing. Trim the perks, and help the down ballot races with financing.
I love the fact that our next VP will be in Denver during the democratic convention.  I wouldn't be surprised if he actually has a better turn out and more media coverage than whomever Obama picks.
Interesting...with the news that the cops in Denver were going to round up anti-convention protesters and frog-march them into a gitmo-like compound, complete with rat\zor wire on top to the walls, I wonder---wil the rich Repiglican counter-convention people run into the same abount and kid os Joe Broke And Democrat, or will they get a special prison---a four-star motel, perhaps...
Romney and other Republicans know that they don't have enough of a policy platform to run on during their convention.  That is why they are trying to up stage the Democrats.  There are by far and away enough problems for the Republicans to get their own protesters.

Jerry -- at least there is some attempt to limit the influence that can be done.  I would hope that all elected officials would listen to those that they serve.  They are there to serve the people and not corporate interests.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich isn't well liked in our fair state, so it doesn't surprise me he isn't invited to speak. His popularity is right up there with George Bush, so keeping your distance is wise this election year. Alexi Giannoulias has been with Obama from the start and Lisa Madigan will also be helpful. Looking forward to hearing ALL of the speeches.....especially Obama's acceptance speech! Just hope the Clinton's behave....so far Bill isn't showing any signs that they will! Obama '08!
The Republicans are sending a surogate to speak in Denver during the Democratic convention? That seems rather petty and low, even for them.
So Ron Paul is holding a counter rally in Minnesota during RepCon and now the GOP is holding a counter rally in Denver during DemCon...are these politicians or children?
Romney.... who cares?

The DNC is doing the right thing with keeping anyone with a hint of scandal out of Denver. Remember, even though they were great years economically, the Republicans were able to gain power in the 90's by using Clinton's scandals. They can't win on issues, so this is what they resort to.

So that makes him more popular then Nancy Pelosi, why is she allowed to speak then?

Here's the only answer you'll probably understand, Jerry: Because she's white.
Donna,
You are just like Obambi...full of yourself!
You should read the federal rules that dictate the use of knives & forks at the conventions.
You're just another ignoramus for Obambi.
Tsk,tsk
Soup is a meal!
