Obama adviser lobbied for oil group

Posted: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 12:36 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Obama's newly named senior adviser and Jewish outreach coordinator, who joined Obama on his trip to Israel, lobbied on behalf of the American Petroleum Institute, according to the Senate Office of Public Records Lobbying Disclosure Act database.

Daniel Shapiro is listed as a lobbyist by Washington, D.C.-based Timmons & Co. and API is one of the company's clients. Shapiro is listed on five entries as one person who helped lobby the U.S. Senate or House on behalf of API on issues ranging from agriculture, energy -- including renewable fuel standards and greenhouse gas emissions, gas price gouging and regulation, labor and antitrust related to the oil industry, defense, the stimulus package, the farm bill, IRS code regarding refineries and more.

The entries, from February to August of this year, show Timmons & Co. was paid $660,000 by API for the instances in which Shapiro helped lobby. Since 1998, Timmons & Co. has collected more than $3.6 million from API, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Shapiro also was Florida Sen. Bill Nelson’s deputy chief of staff. Because of that, the Center for Responsive Politics has a “Revolving Door” profile of him.

Interestingly, also listed as one of the lobbyists with Timmons for API is Martin Paone, the former secretary of the U.S. Senate. That job is now Nancy Erickson's

Shapiro also lobbied for several other clients, including Anheuser-Busch, Chrysler, Freddie Mac, Teva Pharmaceuticals and others. (See below for full list.)

Of course, the McCain campaign has several lobbyists working for it, but Obama has vowed to not to have federal lobbyists involved with his campaign or allow them in an Obama administration.

The Obama campaign has not yet given a response on the news of Shapiro’s lobbying past.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign's response. The Obama campaign tells First Read that Shapiro de-registered as a federal lobbyist on Aug. 11, and is therefore not in violation of any standard the campaign has set, spokesman Hari Sevugan said. Prior to Aug. 11, Shapiro was an unpaid adviser.

Additionally, Shapiro is not advising the candidate on policies in which he had lobbied on, Sevugan said.

"That is the same as McCain's policy," Sevugan said, "except that we don't take money from lobbyists and McCain does."

Being that Shapiro is a former Hill staffer, here's Obama's "revolving door" policy: "No political appointees in an Obama administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration."

Sevugan further points out that senior McCain strategists Wayne Berman and John Green have lobbied for API and that McCain's energy policy is in line with API's -- and Obama's is not. Berman is McCain's national vice chairman and finance committee chairman. Green is McCain's liaison to Congress.

Here are the dates and amounts listed to Timmons from API for the instances in which Shapiro lobbied:
2/12/08: $180,000 (2007 year-end report)
4/10/08: $120,000 (first quarter report)
7/18/08: $100,000 (second quarter report)
8/7/08: $200,000 (Mid-year report)
8/11/08: $60,000 (Third quarter report)

TOTAL: $660,000 (adding these up)

List of clients Shapiro lobbied for:
Alliance for Sensible Airspace Planning
American Council of Life Insurers
American Medical Association
American Petroleum Institute
Anheuser-Busch
Centrex Corp.
Chrysler LLC
Cox Enterprises
Dun & Bradstreet
Freddie Mac
Kinetic Concepts
Lincare
M2Z Networks Inc.
Micron Technology Inc.
Primerica Financial Services
Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc.
Thoratec Corporation
Trueposition Inc.
Union Pacific Corporation

OBAMA  GIVES NO ANSWERS ON ANYTHING  HE THIKS HIS HIP HOP BLACK BS WILL FOLL ENOUGH PEOPLE TO ELECT HIM=HE S A JOKE.
you media people, why you are giving free pass to John Mccain and behind only obama.
Why don't you name all the lobbyist for McCain's campaign and tell us how much they lobbied, biased media!
You mean Obama's ex advisor and coordinator?

WARNER FOR VP
Why is this not a surprise.

Another example of Obama saying "Do as I say, but not as I do!"

Okay..fair enough...let's see the McCain list with every lobbyist and their clients.
Fair is fair, Chuck.
I think we are all interested how the two sides stack up and who these lobbyists have worked for.
Look what he lobbied for "including renewable fuel standards and greenhouse gas emissions, gas price gouging and regulation, labor and antitrust related to the oil industry, defense, the stimulus package, the farm bill, IRS code regarding refineries and more."

I don't see this getting much play other than from the the McCain-loving First Read group

You lie.

Obama said he doesn't take lobbyists' money, and therefore they would not run his Whithouse.

The Obama campaign has not yet given a response on the news of Shapiro’s lobbying past.
*******************************************************

They will soon.  My guess is that he will be gone.  If they don't drop Shapiro, it will look somewhat hypocritical, won't it?

You this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about!

You the MSM go out of your way to hold Obama to every single word that he says . . . even if the guy was a lobbyist AGAINST the oil companies and is actually FOR the things that Obama is FOR.  But no:  You guys can't point that out; you want to harp on it like ". . .duh . . . he said 'no lobbyists' so . . ."  You guys are so blatantly ridiculous!  WHY DON'T YOU TAKE McCAIN for his LIES that he's been telling!!??  Hound him every second you get like you did Obama about the Surge and Wright!  Why does McCain get a pass on criticism because he was POW????!!!  Evey POW isn't a GOOD PERSON!!!!!!!!!
So it's a huge controversy when Obama has a lobbyist, but McCain is a puppet for lobbyists..But that's okay because he was a POW and once someone is a POW they are never to be held accountable for their actions.

Can't wait for the spin on this and I'm sure he will be replaced before the week is over.
Things like this will happen with Obama. He has all these advisory committees with hundreds of members on each committee. So it's bound to happen that one, two, or a couple of dozen of the members are lobbyists. Obama gets a pass on these things though. He's is trying so hard that sometimes he loses sight of his real goals, which aren't exactly clear to him because his huge committees can't ever reach a conclusion that makes any sense.

Obama/08
Wish the press did kind of report on McCains aids. As we all can see the media does protect McCain's interest. Always on th look out on how to make Obama look bad. The media has not been objective. Also have not heard answer from comments about why all moderators for this years debates are alll white 64-74 year olds? Why not a female moderator, or some young moderator? The moderators picked are good, but again seem to have been picked with McCain in mind. is it only me or do others think the same?
"Obama has vowed to not to have federal lobbyists involved with his campaign or allow them in an Obama administration."

He has stated that he would not accept money from federal lobbyists. Daniel Shapiro is an adviser and is not raising money for the campaign.

Can people disagree with the Bush/McCain policies without being unpatriotic?

Can people disagree with the Bush/McCain policies without being traitors?

Can you disagree with Bush/McCain policies without wanting to ‘lose a war’?

Are war mongers the only patriots?

Is it 'patriotic' to question Bush/McCain policies?

What ever happened to ‘Straight Talk’?
What ever happened to a ‘respectful campaign’?

It turned into a Rove campaign

The time for CHANGE is LONG OVERDUE

How did this slip through? If he's plastered all over the place as a lobbyist for big oil, big pharma, and a host of others, how did this fly under the radar? And why didn't the man himself point it out when he was asked about the job, knowing Obama's campaign has made the no-lobbyist pledge from the beginning? The stupidity of this boggles my mind. I'm really disappointed, and I'd like to see Shapiro cut loose at once, and find out who was responsible for hiring him without vetting his past (not even DISTANT past) jobs, and fire them, too.
Oh, for the upteenth time.

The time for CHANGE is LONG OVERDUE

Say that it's SO, JOE !!
Why this is most of the media happy with simple responses like the ones Bush and McCain provide? Shouldn't the American President be able to think better than us on complex issues and give thoughtful answers? No more one-liners. We need a thinking president.

Read this great article:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/18/cafferty.mccain/
Big freakin' deal - these people have lots of jobs, and do several things - oil companies are suffering from the rise in oil prices, too.  I really hope the Obama campaign can stop the cycle of firing anyone who has some sort of possible flaw in their resume.

Don't boycott certain oil companies, and don't blame them for making profits.  Companies like ExxonMobil have millions of stations around the world, and any profit is going to be colossal given their size.

Just drive less.  Lobbying happens.  Get over it.
So, this is proof that Obama wants us to drill more?  As opposed to him saying that we shouldn't drill?  I mean, if you're not actively pursuing drilling all over the world for oil, and are in fact painted as an opponent of it, what does it really say that you have a guy on your staff who represented oil interests?  Really.
McCain's foreign policy advisor is a lobbyist for Georgia!
I'm still waiting on the story about McCain's conflict of intrest!!!
But of course, the media won't report that... even while McCain is threatening Russia.
Ahh... MSM, I can always count on you guys to report "real" news...
Wow! This is the  media for you. We wish they would do something like this with all the lobbyist McCain has. But no they protect him. The media is not objective. How anout doing the same on McCain's aides, asking for too much? can't trust the maedia just like McCain.
WHO CARES. The Public doesnt seem to care that McNasty has lobbiest who work for dictators, Georgia, Big Oil, Enron, helped deregulate the banks, the stock markets etc.....

McNasty and Lieberman = Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy
Obama and Biden or Clarke = Green Lantern and Green Arrow...

Who do you prefer???
Old and crusty or young and powerful??????

My fear is most idiots want The Crusty Crew. That scares me

ANNOUNCE YOUR VP ALREADY OBAMA
Dog bites man !!

Get rid of the lobbyist, Shapiro

(that was easy)

'...Of course, the McCain campaign has several lobbyists working for it, but...'

REALLY?
WHO ARE THESE MCCAIN LOBBYISTS ?
What role do they play in McCain's campaign ?
Do any lobby for the nation of Georgia ?

The time for CHANGE is LONG OVERDUE
So, get rid of him.
Then you wonder why the Democrats are confused by Obama's free fall in the polls. Here's yet another example. Obama, like he always does, will try to nuance the issue, being deliberately vague, and trying to be on all sides of all issues. He does this so the weak minded will hear only what they want to hear, and only believe what they want to believe. Is Obama for lobbyists, or against lobbyists? Who knows? Is he for drilling, or against drilling? Appears the answer is both. Is he for abortion or against abortion? He won't say, it's above his pay grade. His voting record says otherwise, but don't bring that up, because then that's a negative attack.
I'm trying to make myself care, and I just don't.

Sorry.

My problem with McCain and lobbyists is not just the fact that there are so many of them, but the fact that he presents himself as some kind of crusader against them.

But I still don't care about that as much as getting some real health care.
Pleas name all people on John Mccain campign and the company they lobbied. You never mention Mccain's Georgia loggying connection.
McCain's murderer's row of lobbyists has surely inoculated Obama from having to answer about any small fry lobbyist that may advise him.  Any attack by McCain will expose him to even more charges of hypocrisy.  Doesn't Phil Gramm still work for the McCain camp?  A reporter should do some investigation there.

For those of you that do pray, send up a few for Stephanie Tubbs Jones.  She's in a grave state right now but through God all things are possible.
buh bye Shapiro

Obama/Biden???, 08
Way to go Dom!!!!!!!!!Once again you have shown that no matter what Obama does you are intent on making sure that everyone knows where a supporter has lobbied. And who,and for how much. While the Bomber has a staff full of lobbist(while he rails against lobbist saying that they are the problem. His lobbist have a long list I'm sure but to date i havent seen you list all of there clints,or how much they were paid(broken down by years)nice touch.Havent heard much about the Bombers advisor that lobbied for the people of Georiga, you know the country that thought that if they paid for the bombers help that they should get what they paid for.Now that would be big news that shows what a sell out the bomber really is.Like the drilling issue, he was against until the Oil family coughed up 1,1 million. So when will/are you going to list all of the bombers lobbist, and who they lobbied ,and for how much?
Hmmmm....You guys didn't push the lobbying ties of one of McCain's top advisors to the country of Georgia.  Mr. Obama has to fight a two- or three-front war in this election. He has to battle the McCain campaigns' tactics, which is tough enough. He has to fight members of his own party. Third, he has to fight a somewhat jaded media.

This election cycle reminds me of the 2000 election. Al Gore didn't have a chance and he still won the election.  BUT, I DO NOT want to hear a "peep" out of the voters if they vote JM into office.

"Negative" vs. "Factual" ads: There is a difference. McCain is running negative (less-than-truthful) ads about Obama. Obama's ads are focusing on "factual" differences between the two candidates.

Are we going to do this again and again? Republcans play to the insecurities of Americans. As a country, we will play the price sooner or later.
No one should look too closely at the campaign infrastructure of either side. They'd find lobbyists everywhere...

http://www.political-buzz.com/
I see this getting little to no play other than with the McCain-loving group.
Both camps have advisors with the same background.  This is (unfortunately) normal when a candidate gets to this level.  I see no challenge - the test comes from the candidate in their decision proces after elected.
Blade, you might want to re-read the article.  It says he lobbied on behalf of API on those issues.  Since the American Petroleum Institute is intrinsically evil because it involves oil, it follows that he was lobbying to benefit them.  Kinda the reason they hire lobbyists in the first place.

Obama is a good politician.  He doesn't play the game any different than anyone else.  Lobbyists aren't intrinsically evil.  They represent a broad variety of legitimate interests. And Democrat lobbyists aren't necessarily intrinsically good and pure, either.

Why not just admit it and stop the pretense that Obama is somehow pure and above it all.  He's a politician.

Obama.  The One.  And the same.
Pro-Obama folks get upset with this kind of news story because they feel if McCain has similar types of people working for him it should be a mute point.  But let's remember the liberal response to Conseratives who promote family values and then have had a moral failing.  The liberal attack on them has been immense and non-stop because, they argue, they are hypocrites and need to eat their words.  Now Obama, who has been outspoken about who he won't allow to be an adviser is apparently found to contradict himself and when it's reported, many feel this is unfair reporting.  Is that consistent?  Doesn't seem to be.  Let's all remember that as famous and talented as these men are, they are still flawed and sinful people like all of us.  They are not saviors.  At best, hopefully they are men who will do their best for our country.  Let's stop idolizing them and start praying for them all to be humble and people of integrity.
I have to say this...you hear "they" say that the media is in Obama's favor and the media is trying to help elect him.  I just don't see this.  But maybe I'm looking through a different lens.
OBAMA  GIVES NO ANSWERS ON ANYTHING  HE THIKS HIS HIP HOP BLACK BS WILL FOLL ENOUGH PEOPLE TO ELECT HIM=HE S A JOKE.

How about answering this David A Texas. Why are you such a #@#%ing RACIST ?
Yo Donna,

Give it up!

"Liar Liar pants on fire!"
Stop campaigning to be the next Mrs Obambi.

I'm an Obama supporter and this is fair game. Obama has vowed to be transparent and voters have a right to know who's working in his campaign, just as they have a right to know who's working in McCain's campaign. Quite frankly, it's Pollyanna to assume that campaign strategists won't have ties to Washington lobbying. What will be important is what Obama's energy policy will be and I highly doubt he will let the oil and gas industry dictate that as the Bush administration has done.
I wander how long ago you guys gave Obama a chance to respond? If you listed all of McCains lobbiest's past and present with all the faq's you would have had to take up pages and pages and pages. But you haven't done this once that I'm aware of with McCain. Why not. Who sighns your paycheck buddy. Why did Howard Dean get slapped down the day after he talked with your man, Chris about regulating and demanopolising the news busness. That's when you guys put his yell on an endless loop and destroyed his chances of becoming president and you tried it again with Barak and Rev. Wright. It must be getting under your skin something terrible that no matter how hard you try you haven't been able to knock Obama off his perch.
List the lobbyist for McCain and how much they lobbied.
Wow a lot of Obama people on here trying to do some splaning....
I don’t care if he has lobbyist or not on his staff. its a non issue what is is the vilification of them then this. Wow
All I have to say "Typical politician"

Mccain said he was going to run a clean campaign.  Let's hold him to that as well.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The dude is NOT Obama's economic advisor.

NOT Obama's environmental advisor.

...He's connecting Obama up with Jewish voters.

No smoking gun here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Likewise, although world supply has grown and will continue to grow (esp. in India and China), there was no major spike in demand.

Michael Sheridan, Sacramento, California (Sent Wednesday, August 20, 2008 11:51 AM)

No major spike in demand? Ever hear of China and India? Couple of billion people who have increased their fuel requirements 10 fold in the last few years.

No spike in demand. You must be an Obama supporter  because if you are it's a requirement that you believe the unbelievable.

oops!  He'd better leave.  DEFINITELY don't want Big Oil spilling its poison on the campaign, or giving the RNC a chance to slam Obama for this.
You are exercising a serious double-standard here.

McCain has literally over 100 lobbyists running his campaign, and I don't recall you guys ever once breaking down their lobbyist past in this detail. A perfect example of the media showing "balance" when it's anything but.
