Obama echoes Clinton 'fighter' message

Posted: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 2:38 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- As Obama has focused on the economy almost exclusively on the campaign trail in recent days, he has begun to sound more and more like his former rival Hillary Clinton, co-opting her rhetoric on being a “fighter” for ordinary Americans.

Obama is hoping to win over voters in traditionally red states with his economic message -- that while McCain's policies favor big corporations and the rich, he will look out for the middle class.

The New York senator used language about being a champion of hard-working families to great effect toward the end of the primary season, helping her win in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana -- though narrowly in the latter. These same states will be battlegrounds in the fall.

This election is about “deciding right here and right now that we are gonna fight to make government accountable to the American people to make sure that the special interests aren’t dominating Washington,” Obama told the crowd of about 350 here at a community college in the southern part of the state.

“That’s why I promise you this: that if you will vote for me, if you give me that opportunity, if you give me that chance, that I will fight for you every single day. I will wake up in that White House thinking about the people of Martinsville and the people of Henry County and how I can make your life better,” he said, echoing a line Clinton often used at the end of her speeches.

At several events in recent days in Nevada, New Mexico and North Carolina, Obama has talked about average families incomes that rose $6,000 during the Bill Clinton years and have fallen $1,000 during the Bush years -- statistics that Clinton used near the top of nearly every speech. This is not the first time the Illinois senator has hailed the last two-term Democratic president, but he seems to be using this sort of language more lately.

He has spoken about “the American Dream slipping away,” another favorite phrase of Sen. Clinton’s, has made allusions to the “invisible Americans” that she often spoke of, though he did not use the word, and has talked about listening to the voices of the American people, another line that has been a favorite of both Democrats.

Democrats have “gotta do a better job of listening to the American people and working on behalf of the American people,” he said before repeating the phrase about how he will wake up everyday thinking about how to make Americans' live better.

Last night at a town hall in Raleigh, N.C., Obama said he wanted people to vote for him not just based on party affiliation, but because he had been a fighter for them.

“I want them to take a look at my track record, and I want them to see, you know what, this is a guy who started out as a community organizer working with people who'd been laid off jobs at the steel mills," he said. "This is the guy who fought as a civil rights attorney for women who were being discriminated against on the job and workers who were being discriminated and people who weren't getting the right to vote. This is somebody who has fought for equal pay for equal work in the state legislature and has worked to provide healthcare for kids who didn't have it.”

“I want them to say, this is somebody who's gonna fight for me,” he continued. “This is somebody who hears my voice. That's-and if I do that, I promise you, I won't just be getting Democrats, I'm gonna be getting a whole bunch of Republicans and independents as well and that's how we're gonna win this election."

During the roughly 40-minute Q & A, Obama talked about help for small businesses, his support for unions, comprehensive immigration reform, reforming No Child Left Behind and how he’ll help veterans and reduce incarceration rates.

Obama was introduced by Mark Warner, the former Virginia governor and current Senate candidate. Warner will be speaking at the Democratic convention next week, where both Clintons will also be speakers.

Go Obama! We are all rooting for you - Don't forget to remind them how much of phony McSame is in the process!!!
It is time for Obama to get specific about how he differs from McCain on economic issues.  Tell the facts and how he is going to deal with the problems.  Hit back hard Barack, more people need to hear your message and how you differ from McBush.
nothing wrong by talking economy, the senator is runing a campaign here and having dialogue with
the american people and telling them what he can
do for them, the people of United State of America will vote on 04NOV08 to decide who will be the next
president and not some dirty trick pollster
Obama better get his act together and start hitting back at McCain, or he's gonna lose this thing, and it's his to lose. He needs to prove that he's more than a fancy speech, because he's lookin' a bit like a milksop right now.
THIS IS THE SAME LANGUAGE SEN. OBAMA HAS BEEN USING ALL ALONG.

CHUCH AND COMPANY WHAT A STRETCH

SLOW NEWS DAY

And Senator...If you put Hillary on your ticket for V.P. you will WIN FLORIDA.  That is my prediction for the day...
WTF is OBAMA WAITING FOR..

THIS IS GETTING OLD BARACK. Tell us who the VP is NOW.

and if its Bayh, Kaine or Sebellius I will be done.
You can choke that ticket up to a big loss
It seems in today's political environment people relate more to a 30 second negative attack TV ad rather then considering what is in their better interests for themselves and family members. Its an amazing happening to see just how gullible many Americans have become.
Don't be shocked if Hillary is the pick for VP.  It might be hard to imagine, after everything that has happened, and I was never a supporter of the Dream Ticket idea before... but she is the only person who has the ability to give him an immediate 10% bounce and get the base fired up and lock down battleground states like OH, PA and FL....  He'll sell it as a Team of Rivals, and sell the first female VP as a key part of the "Change" ticket... Just sayin....
Gore and Kerry were fighters too. Look where that got them, I mean, other then being gazillionaries. Guess they were fighting, but for themselves.
What alot of crap! Nobama is an avowed socialist & will fight for cradle to grave government @ our expense!
Win with Clinton as VP, lose without her.
Show her and her many supporters RESPECT by offering her the VP job or watch the poll drift to McCain all the way to November.

Barack Obama CANNOT WIN without Hillary holdout supporters an dnothing short of having her on the ticket will bring them aboard.

If Obama and his supporters are so arrogant to think they can win without Clinton, get ready for the tear of deception.
Not only does he need her and Bill, now he's stealing her policies.  What a tool !

McCain now has a 9-point edge, 49 percent to 40 percent, over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the economy -- an issue nearly half of voters said was their top concern in the November 4 presidential election.

Stop with the comparisons to Hillary already.  All of you at First Read seem to have a Hillary fetish going on!!  It's always, Hillary, Hillary, Hillary!!  Never enough Hillary!  Is Hillary maybe your gramma or something, close relative, I don't get it and I'm tired of this still being a 3 way race to the White House.  Stop it.  I get that you like to create conflict which the mention of Hillary tends to do, but please, get over Hillary.  Either that or show your love without involving us and clean up her multi-million dollar campaign debt.  Hillary may just love you all right back!  This FR Hillary fetish has got to stop.
Keating Five Corporate McBlinky will do zip for  average American.......of course he probably thinks average means you make a million or two.  The divisive, hateful RNC style needs to be countered strongly by Senator Obama if this country isn't going to be put into a position of going down the tubes with a third Bush term.  As a union member and veteran I feel Obama is the candidate to trust.
I understand why Obama has adopted this "fight for you" rhetoric.  Still, I miss his original call for us to WORK toward improving our country.  It's going to take a lot of work on the part of the president, the congress, and the PEOPLE to straighten out this mess and make our country even better than it ever has been.  Remember that Obama has the skill, the experience, and the desire to organize and lead that kind of effort.
Just goes to show it's almost more important to people that it's not what you say, but how you say it.  For so long we've heard pundants & critics sing the refrain that Obama's too vague, Obama has no plan, Obama has no substance...guess what guys, Obama has laid out these plans before, he has been spelling it, but just because it wasn't met with thunderous cheers it got overlooked.  At least now people are starting to wise up & get it.  It's still dumbfounding that his numbers are slipping.
Sounds like Obama is back, with fire in his belly!  If he can keep this up consistently, and keep up his fresh attacks on McCain, he will be taking the oath of office come January.
Obama's team is smart and I hope the McCain doesn't start drinking the pollster koolaid.
Obama's team wants to go behind in the polls, so that when he takes stage at the debates, he will be able to look presidential enough to pull back ahead for good.

Tricky, but very smart.

As for Obama.... trying to look tough is difficult when you espouse a "loser" philosophy. Why doesn't any challenger understand that the more you bash the current president, the more offended the eloctorate becomes. They voted for him, idiot!

As for this "I'm a man of the people" bullcrap rhetoric, he can hang it up. The man knows he can't relax, because America couldn't handle him if he could actually relax and be himself. Growing up in an inner city environment, it is difficult to work there and not be affected by the injustices you see on a DAILY basis.

Obama supporters are hypocrites to the "N"th degree. Any of you chumps ever find yourself in south Chicago at night, you'll be calling for a police escort. McCain is who he says he is and that's all that he is. America can trust that.
