First thoughts: All about Hillary

*** All about Hillary: Even after she ended her presidential bid back in June, perhaps we should have guessed that this presidential contest (or at least the convention) was still going to be about the Clintons. And our new NBC/WSJ poll is the latest evidence to back this up. In the survey, Obama leads McCain by three points, 45%-42%, which is down from his six-point advantage last month. Our pollsters identified a few factors behind the tightening race -- the Russia-Georgia conflict, McCain’s negative ads, and lingering doubts about Obama -- but the biggest reason why this race remains close in this Dem-leaning political environment is because of Obama’s inability to close the deal with some of Clinton’s supporters. According to the poll, 52% of them say they will vote for the presumptive Democratic nominee, but 21% are backing McCain and an additional 27% are either undecided or want to vote for someone else. For that reason, NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) says Clinton’s convention speech on Tuesday, as well as when her name is put in nomination, will be significant. “The Democratic convention is more than a coronation,” Hart explains. “It is an event where the words of Hillary Clinton are probably going to be exceptionally important.”

*** More on the Clinton factor: To take Obama's problem with some Clinton voters a step further, our pollsters looked at those HRC backers who aren't voting for Obama. They made up 11% of the survey, and they tend to lean Democratic: They disapprove of Bush's job, believe the country is on the wrong track, and slightly favor Dems on a generic ballot. But -- and this is a big but -- they have a much better impression of McCain than they do of Obama. Among this group, Obama's fav/unfav is 24%-50% (McCain's is 43%-20%); 55% say they don't identify with Obama's values and background (just 18% of them say that about McCain); and 65% say they are uncomfortable with Obama as president (only 36% believe that about McCain). Considering how important former Clinton primary voters seem to be in our NBC/WSJ poll, it might be worth keeping a closer eye on Clinton's stumping trip for Obama in Florida today. She'll be campaigning for a demographic that hasn't been one Obama's stronger voting groups: older white women in Palm Beach County

*** McCain’s weaknesses: While McCain has cut Obama’s lead in half, the Arizona senator still faces some steep challenges -- challenges that his campaign has yet to address. For one thing, 77% believe that McCain would closely follow President Bush’s policies, which is unchanged since March. NBC/WSJ co-pollster Neil Newhouse (R) says that if one of the McCain camp’s goals this summer was to distance McCain from Bush, “that wasn’t achieved.” In addition, November is still shaping up to be a change election (60% say they want a president who will focus on progress and moving America forward, versus 35% who want the next president to focus on protecting what has made America great), and yet McCain has to seize the “change” mantle or even try to. One of the most striking things in this current tightening of the race is that it’s come without McCain addressing his own weaknesses. To use a tennis analogy, it’s like a player advancing to center court without working on his backhand. It’s an impressive feat, but it also increases the likelihood of that weakness being exploited in the biggest game of his life. Then again, it may be why the Lieberman-for-VP chatter is more serious than some think. In one fell swoop, McCain could lower that following-Bush's-policies number by quite a bit if he picked just one of the two sitting senators who actually ran against Bush as a Democrat. Lieberman, however, backs much of Bush’s foreign policy.

*** Coming home: But McCain does have something going for him that he didn’t have a few months ago: Republican voters are coming home. In June's NBC/WSJ poll, a generic Democratic presidential candidate held a 16-point advantage over a generic GOP one (51%-35%). In July, it was a 12-point margin (48%-36%). And now, it's just nine points (46%-37%). What’s more, the generic congressional ballot test is closer than it has been since the fall of 2006. Yet even though Republicans appear to be coming home, McCain is still facing a tremendous enthusiasm gap. In the poll, 46% of Obama voters say they are excited about voting for him. Just 12% of McCain voters say that about him. In a close race -- if the Clinton voters don’t come home for Obama -- that could be a HUGE factor. By the way, don't miss the fact that McCain has slightly more Republicans supporting him (85%) than Obama has Democrats for him (79%). McCain leads among indies, but it's within the margin (42%-38%). Also, the party ID split in this poll between Dems and GOPers was just nine points, a low for the last year.

*** Talkin’ ‘bout my generation: Here’s another noteworthy finding in the NBC/WSJ poll: Obama holds a humongous 55%-37% lead among voters 18 to 34. But among all voters 35 and older, McCain has a one-point lead. How many young voters turn out to vote in November, as well as their margin for Obama, could be the single biggest thing to watch on in the exit polls on Election Night.

*** Veep watch: Nobody has any news... the rumors are as crazy as we said they would be on Monday. But the tea leaves are around us, and when the pick's made we'll all be able to say, "Well, sure, of course it was X, when the two met at such-and-such, it was obvious!"  Seriously, it is interesting to see the body language of the supposed final three Dems. Biden's downright cocky about his chances, the pick-up truck trips are a nice touch (even Chicago must be smiling) and the winning over of the stakeout crews with coffee and bagels. Bayh's been more reclusive and Kaine's got the "I'm just happy to be considered" swagger about him. On the GOP side, there isn't the same intense focus by the media just yet since we may hours away from a Dem pick. But many conservatives are nervous that two of the supposed leading candidates to be McCain's running mate -- Romney and Pawlenty -- are being dispatched to Denver. Would the eventual running mate really be on convention surrogate duty just days before he was to be the pick? Also, Obama stumps with Tim Kaine today in Chester, VA.

*** Lobbyist rant: Both candidates are asking for lots of ridiculous hypocrite-type "gotcha" coverage on this lobbyist issue, because there are so many examples where the campaigns don't appear to be practicing what the candidate preaches. Yesterday, McCain unloaded on lobbyists, claiming they never get anything from him, etc. But his campaign is littered with ex-lobbyists. Not to be outdone, Obama talks a lot about cleansing Washington from the ills lobbyists and yet he, too, regularly keeps lobbyists in his campaign. Sometimes, the campaign argues that so-and-so isn't a "current" lobbyist, or they'll argue that the person is an unpaid adviser. Bottom line: The candidates may truly believe that lobbyists are part of the problem in Washington, but they both have exposed themselves to major cynicism by the press -- and eventually by the voters -- because of how frequent lobbyists pop up on behalf of both candidates.

*** On the trail: McCain is on vacation in Sedona, AZ though the weekend. Obama, in Virginia, stumps in Chester and Chesapeake. And Clinton campaigns for Obama in Florida.

Making Hope and History rhyme.......
Obama/Biden 08!!!!!
Sudden thoughts and second thoughts

Right now, it is hard to be excited.  I have had an Obama magnetic sticker stolen off the back of my truck, an Obama yard sign destroyed, and I get bombarded with anti-Obama jokes/cartoons at work and home.  Can Americans be so dumb to vote for McCain and let the GOP steal the WH again?  I sure hope Barack rocks next week in Denver and we get re-energized.

Why do so many Americans believe Barack is not patriotic?  I mean really, I bet those who believe this have no idea what patriotism is anyway.  Hypocrites and morons rule the day I guess.

Why is everyone saying this election is a referendum on Obama?  Isn’t this election a referendum on us?

Do you feel as I do that the Clinton’s will surprise us next week in a very positive way?  I honestly believe there are better feelings between Hillary and Barack than people think.

Will the polls be different in the fall after all of the young voters get back into college?  Are minorities being under counted right now because it is summer?  The sheer number of voters throughout the DEM primaries have not vanished.

Are you happy or sad that Obama is showing signs of attacking, and the ads and rhetoric is getting more acerbic?  Sure it is a natural impulse to want to defend ones self, but do we want to lower ourselves to their level?

Why do we always hear that people are tired of negative campaigning, yet we are so dumb and mesmerized to dwell on them like a junkie?  All you hear is that people are fed up with the way things are, yet they fall for the same old fear-smear-attack campaigns of the GOP.  When will people wake up and realize the GOP & McCain have nothing?  Nothing!!!  What part of another 4 years of the same old crap don’t you understand America?

Is everyone standing by to receive their text message or email for Obama’s VP announcement?  I am.

55% say they don't identify with Obama's values and background (just 18% of them say that about McCain); and 65% say they are uncomfortable with Obama as president (only 36% believe that about McCain).
******************************************************

Translation: 55% say they don't identify with Obama's skin color; and 65% say they are uncomfortable with a black man as president.

I know, I've got a few of these folks in my family/town.  Unbelievable.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
I don't know, is it possible, just possible, that people in this country would let Senator Obama have his week during the Convention?

Hillary Clinton lost because she had no control over her campaign people. She lost. And the so-called lost opportunity of her being the first woman president is ridiculous. We have had women in high office positions for many years, including the Supreme Court. It's only natural to assume that we would elect a woman some day as our president.

This just wasn't the year, for many many different reasons. And neither sexism nor the media played a role in her defeat.

To pull this kind of **** next week is deplorable. We have an opportunity FINALLY to elect an intelligent, thoughtful individual as our next president. Someone who doesn't want to go around the world acting like some macho maniac, bombing innocent people. Peace. He wants peace. Don't we all?

For goodness sakes, for once stop being so self-centered, immature and selfish. Think about the country and its future. John McCain is no better than GWB.

Try actually paying attention to the polls and then listen to McCain when he speaks. Instead of yourselves. This self-pity stuff from grown adults at this point in the election - please, let it go or just stay home.

Unbelievable.
Looking at the lineup of the Dem convention, just who exactly won the Democratic nomination? If the convention schedule and speakers are any indication, it's Hillary!
Does anyone start to think that Hillary plays right into the GOP card game?
Somebody keeps scratch'n the rash...stop the rash by stop'n the (b)itch'n...
Hey Chuck,
What's the take on McCain's Town Hall yesterday in New Mexico? I want to know what his campaign's response is to the dialogue regarding reinstating the draft.
Apparently the main stream media doesn't see this as an issue.
"Even after she ended her presidential bid back in June, perhaps we should have guessed that this presidential contest (or at least the convention) was still going to be about the Clintons..."

Rachel Maddow predicted this BEFORE her drop out.

PS.  You can't bi*ch about Experience or lack there of and then complain about lobbyists.  Obama's position is far more transparent - they must no longer be registered and cannot lobby during an Obama administration.  McCain actively maintains relationships with Schuneman (sp?), Black, Grimm (oops Gramm) and all of the Bush 'usual suspects'.

Please people, NO BUSH 3RD TERM.
"McCain is on vacation in Sedona, AZ though the weekend..."  they had to put him out to pasture before he said something really stupid, again.

chuck you gave us nothing new today, are you still sleeping? this is yesterdays news
Denver is going to have to get out the riot gear. When these old lady Hillary supporters start rampaging the convention, the wimpy Obama supporters will be huddled up in the corners of the convention center bleating out for their mommies.
It defies credulity that ANYONE considers a Lieberman pick for VP to be a statement from McCain that he is anti-Bush policies.  Lieberman practically swoons with excitement when he kisses up to Shrub.

Are you serious First Read?  I can see where McCain would think he was doing something clever, since he truly doesn't get what this race is about, but for you to say it?  Come on.
First Read Get on this one why dont you.  McCain told a person in a town hall meeting that he agreed 100% to he statement. Which included the need to reinstate the draft to support his future conflicts. So to all of you angry Clinton fans. Are you willing to let McWar send our children to hell in a hand basket just to spite Obama and his supporters because we did not vote for HRC. If that is logical then I am a penguin. This thing yall are holding on to is a sickness at this point. They both had over 18 million voters, she was just out performed. Crying foul is one thing screwing the nation is another.
A lot of these people being polled are Kucinich supporters, and they believe 100% in UFOs. They'd vote for Barack, but the tinfoil they put on their heads will make them forget just when the election is. Instead, they'll just stay home and watch Star Trek reruns.
Seriously, who here is planning to vote for McCain, now that he has admitted that he wants to reinstate the DRAFT?!

20 August, Las Crucas, NM Town Hall:
GUEST: If we don't re-enact the draft, I don't think we'll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of Hell.

SEN JOHN MCCAIN: Ma'am let me say that I don't disagree with anything you have said, and thank you.

BUYERS' REMORSE!!!

THAT'S RIGHT!!!
If the "lightweight" doesn't step aside & let "Momma" take over...it IS all over!
I have become so tired of the Clinton's always trying to be the center of attention.  I have lost so much respect for them lately.  This isn't about Clinton vs Obama, or Clinton supporters vs Obama suporters.  It IS about the Democrats taking back control of the White House, plain and simple.  Anyone who was a Hillary supporter and is refusing to vote for Obama, or worse, vote for McCain instead, is not a Democrat thet we need in our party.  That's just being selfish and inconsiderate to the entire party and all the Americans who are fighting this Republican oppression of the middle class everyday.
"but the biggest reason why this race remains close in this Dem-leaning political environment is because of Obama’s inability to close the deal with some of Clinton’s supporters. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
*sigh*

If the American people could just clear away the clutter for a moment, and think about what is really going on here.

This election is about the American people versus the corporate-political establisment.

Barack Obama is simply a REPRESENTATIVE of the people.

You don't have to like him or agree with him on everything.

You just have to hope like hell that his candidacy can break the strangle hold of lobbyists and corrupt politicians on our government.

Don't get distracted - the Obama candidacy is historic not because he is brown.

It is historic because his candidacy would not be possible without a TREMENDOUS grass roots effort - for the first time in American history - PEOPLE are DIRECTLY financing a campaign. That alone is one of the greatest accomplishments of our generation.

Barack Obama will put OUR INTERESTS ahead of CORPORATE INTERESTS.

Enough of elected American governments telling the people "so".

Time to take our government back.

Obama '08

And this is one Southern white boy who badly wants to vote for Obama - but he just looked absolutely weak when he rolled over for the Clintons.  Is he going to let Putin push him around too?  Or what about members of his own party - Pelosi?  That would be a problem for me.  Still if he picks anyone but Hilary for VP, I'll probably hold my nose and vote for him.  He's got to get some backbone, otherwise he's toast.
"McCain is on vacation in Sedona, AZ though the weekend..."  they had to put him out to pasture before he said something really stupid, again.

Clara Kansas City, MO (Sent Thursday, August 21, 2008 9:32 AM)

All that "stupid stuff" McCain has been saying got him a solid lead over the Boy Wonder. And what a thrashing McCain gave Obama at Warrens little get together last Saturday. Of course morals and ethics aren't the Democrats or Obama's strong suit, so maybe Barack will do better next time.
Hopefully after next week's convention we can FINALLY put the "It's all about Hillary" saga to bed. Once again, the Clinton's will whine, pout, support, (but not really) their way into the national spotlight. I am so sick of Bill Clinton and his lack of support for Senator Obama. The only reason I will even listen to his speech is to hear how supportive we can expect him to be. We'll be able to tell, not only by the words, but by the "tone" in which they are spoken. These two (Bill & Hillary) need to go far, far away and let the Party heal and get behind the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama, once and for all. If Hillary is thinking about 2012 right now, she can forget about my support then, too. I will never vote for another Clinton for any office they seek.
This just in John McCain panders to all voters pride and character... He knows how to make that judgment better than you will ever know...

News Flash: John McCain is finally forgiven for being a POW in North Vietnam....everyone lives happily ever after...John picks new career...used car sells man..Asked why he did this...he responds by saying ..the  old gas guzzlers are as good as the new ones...in his judgment....burp...
Oh great -  Hillary   She and bill are pathetic.  If her supporters decide to vote for mccain - then I would consider them guilty of treason.  McCain will send our young men and women to war after war and anyone who votes for McCain will have to bear that responsibility.

I hope that Obama gets the necessary bump in the polls with his VP selection and the convention and that the Clintons, whether for party unity or their own benefit, behave themselves.
I also hope that the Obama campaign starts hammering away at some of Mc Cain's outrageous policies.  I saw the CNN bio on his last night and apparently he was a slacker in school and a hot head.  Do we need another one of those in the White House after 8 years of an overgrown frat boy?
Right now, it is hard to be excited.  I have had an Obama magnetic sticker stolen off the back of my truck, an Obama yard sign destroyed, and I get bombarded with anti-Obama jokes/cartoons at work and home.  Can Americans be so dumb to vote for McCain and let the GOP steal the WH again?  I sure hope Barack rocks next week in Denver and we get re-energized.

Well, Duh Chuck, look where you live?  I can imagine the same thing happening if you were in Illinois and Hillary was the leader of the libs.  You can get all that stuff replaced for a $1000 donation to Obama.  I see you can still get tickets on Obama's website for his little Denver party at Mile High for a $1000 donation, even though he says it's free!!!!  And I did not know you had to pay for those little signs you stick in your yard for $8.  Priceless!!!!!!

Did Biden get those bagels at Dunkin' Donuts????LOL
His friend the Indian must give him a great deal.

Of course Republicans are coming home.  Now that we see the only "change" that Obama talks about is the change in your pocket after he raises everyone's taxes, we figure it is the kind of "Change" we don't need.

PLEASE MAKE HILL & BILLY go away!!!

Plus if you all love her so much, why haven't all 18 million of you "cracks" given a dollar to dig her out of the wasteful debt she dug herself in (while trying to assinate Mr. Obama's character).  PUT UP OR SHUT UP!!!

You know, amid all of the hoopla about McCain "closing the gap" in polling, one fact is begging to be discussed:

Why can't McCain get to 45%?

He's had the best couple of weeks(?) he could hope for, yet he can't break out of the low 40s.  When will we hear the pundits wondering "Why can't McCain get above 45%?"

Oh, right.  We won't hear that from the self-appointed rah-rah squad.  Horseraces being the goal and all...
The biggest flip flopper on the lobbyist issue is McBush...he has spent years railing against special interests and then we find out his campaign is littered with lobbyists for foreign governments...hardly American or patriotic if you ask me...I don't think foreigners have a right to be heard by our congress...we do

The Straight Talk Express got derailed and became the Stray Talk Express...
Note to Chuck Todd:

I saw you last night on Countdown on Keith Olberman making excuses for John McCain about his agreeing with the lady in the town hall about the draft.

Chuck, would it be too much to ask to let John McCain make his own excuses? Can we just let the candidate explain HIMSELF, just this once?

How is it that disgruntled Clinton supporters trumps John McCain expressing support for the draft? Which seems more newsworthy? What is really going on at First Read?

Add those 11% of Hillary stalwarts to Obama's tally and he has a good lead over McCain. Whether his campaign likes it or not, those Hillary voters will make or break this election.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
If Obama is truly starting to trail and McCain will beat him hand over fist as you MSM and your bogus pollsters will have us believe, then why were people camped out and lined up to see Obama in Chesapeake, VA? This area is military/Republican central..Or so it seemed until this year. I just really don't think it is as close as you all want it to be and it's sad that you are not doing your job as MSM. You are deluding the American public and putting a bug in their ear over who they "should" vote for.
Why is it no surprise that FR didn't even mention that war-monster McShame wants to kill more of our sons and daughters by reinstating a draft to start more wars and continue the ones his mentor started?
I love the fact that anyone who isn’t enamored with Obama is obviously racist in the eyes of the vast majority on this blog.
I even heard on the radio a liberal commentator say that if you say you have issues with his experience obviously your using that as cover for your raciest attitude. (This is my cliff notes liberal to English translation obviously this will make me a raciest.)

Chuck NY--I appreciate your comments...keep writing.

I believe this will be hand-to-hand combat in the trenches in order for Barack to win.  Barack has more hands, but McCain has more Archie Bunkers.  If we want Obama, clear your calendars and give the campaign 6 ti 8 hours per week.
Obama hasn't really given the Clinton's anything. I can't imagine Hillary NOT speaking - regardless of who the nominee ended up being. Does anyone really think that, if Edwards, Biden, Richardson, Dodd, or anyone else won that Hillary still wouldn't have a speaking spot?

And the same goes for Bill - he would be speaking regardless of who the nominee was. The only thing Obama did was let them go through with the roll call. But even that will likely backfire on Hillary, because since she dropped out, many delegates just switched over to Obama. Meaning, when they count the votes, she'll get FEWER votes than she had right when she dropped out - it will just make Obama's victory seem that much bigger.
I have been saying it for the past month.  This election is already over and SENILE OLD MCFLIPFLOP "Mush-Head" will win and win huge.  Barack Obama had such a great opportunity to become the next president but ever since the primaries, he has run by far the most inept presidential campaign in history.  Obama doesn't have a judgement problem he has a "John McCain lies about everything" problem yet Obama refused to fight and lets the lies settle as truths.  It is now too late for Obama.  This election is OVER and Mush-Head will win.  Just remember this when Mush-Head reinstates the draft and starts another war around the world.
Every single time I see or hear Hillary Clinto, I feel
like a snake has just crawled across my foot.
You guys just won't let the "Clinton BS" die will you.  Has it ever occurred to you SAGEs that if Hillary had got the nomination the number of Obama supporters at the point who would not be backing her would be greater?  Espically the way she would have had to win it.  At least 70% of the AA vote would be gone.  Please explain how she would win?  Right now Obama supporters are being generous when asked, what do they have to lose?

Question why didn't your pollster ask what the numbers would be with Obama vs Romney?  Think about it?

Chuck I heard you say racism played no part...maybe but I suspect that many of these people would not vote for Obama even if Hillary was on the ticket.  BTW 1 point or 100 points come Nov. a win is a win ask GWB in 2000.
If Obama picks Windbag/Hairplugger/plagiarizer Biden, it is over. McCain will be president. Why on earth would he pick someone that was a 3rd tier candidate at best?
1.) My "first thoughts" are NEVER about Hillary, unless I wake up ill. Her crazoid feminista friends can do what they like, it won't matter.
2.)Did anybody really doubt that old, grumbling Repigs would "come home", especially to the old, very white "Great Grandfather in Washington"?
3.)They're coming home, but not with enthusiasm.  They're voting AGAINST (tho black one) and not FOR the savior of the American way of life, as they did with Reagan and Bush. Given crummy weather, will these half-hearteds really bother to go out, as opposed to the younger Daily Kos-sters, who are fired up about their guy?
4.) Mclame is still a Bush clone, even if he has Lie-berman, another Bush cheerleader, tag along with him. And the voters know it; that's why he hasn't been able to change the "Bush Clone" perception this summer.  And it'll bite him in the keester come November, especially when voters consider how deeply his pee-pee is in the pocket of every fat-cat lobby in D.C.
Anyone see the difference here...

John McCain....It's more then just the Presidency...
It's a chance to lead the country in war..
George had his war I want mine too...

Obama'08

All the poll shows is that the 21% of Hillary's supporters who say they'll vote for "Bush Hugger" McCain aren't paying attention and aren't all there mentally.  These fools aren't real Democrats and would rather jump on the "Racists 'R Us" Express.

It'sa time to take back our government from "Lobbyist Lover" McCain and his gang of lobbyist terrorists who have done more to wreck our democracy than any third rate third world terrorist group.  Thanks Phil Gramm for wrecking the banking system with your deregulation and for lobbying on behalf of that Swiss fraud bank UBS to keep the rich and greedy protected from paying taxes by hiding their money from government scrutiny.

Only Barack Obama can save the middle class from the lobbyist vultures of the Lobbyist Express!

Go Obama 08/12!
Although I do not trust the Clintons, think they
realize for any future considerations, must play
within the unspoken rules. I certainly hope so.
They have already done too much damage to Obama
and the Democratic party by their negative
campaigning.
And, anyone who says they are a Democrat and voting
for Mccain is so full of it they don't even deserve
recognition.
Brian in Cedar Hill....I'll second that statement.  McBlinky can't be trusted.  Oh, big oil, top of the line corporate execs sure they want the sell-out and the religious right seems to be buying his schtick but the guy is gonzo.  I can't wait for the debates.  I just hope they do a body search on the old man to make sure he isn't wearing com equip like his buddy Bush did.
I am thinking more than ever now that Barack needs to put Hillary on the ticket. She is the only candidate that could create incredible excitement - that the Dems could overshadow the Republicans' convention. In an already pivotal and historical race - it would be a solidifying move to help Barack win in November!
John McCain is a War Monger no question about it. He keep saying " I hate wars, I know how to win wars".

How any American could stomach Joe Lieberman as our president in the event McCain would hypothetically need to step aside is beyond me. And how anyone could consider McCain as physically and mentally fit enough for the job now is equally puzzling.
