Obama doesn't let up on McCain's homes

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
CHESTER, VA -- In another effort to show that McCain doesn't get middle-class concerns, Obama joked about the interview his rival gave yesterday in which the Arizona senator could not recall the number of houses he owns.

Obama, who is fighting to win over voters that are struggling economically, has consistently sought to show that he would be a better steward of the economy than his GOP rival. In nearly every speech in recent days, he has argued that McCain doesn’t get what ordinary American are facing, reminding people of McCain advisor Phil Gramm’s comment about America being a “nation of whiners” and about McCain’s Saddleback quip defining rich as an income of $5 million.

“Yesterday, [McCain] was asked again, what do you think about the economy? He says, Well, I think the economy is fundamentally strong; said the economy is fundamentally strong,” he told a crowd of about 250 people.

The presumptive Democratic nominee said he had been puzzled by the remark until he heard about an interview in which McCain asked the publication to check with his staff on the number of homes he owned.

“So they asked his staff and he said, at least four. At least four. Now think about that. I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make $5 million, and if you don’t know how many houses you have, then it’s not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong!” he said incredulously. “But if you’re like me and you’ve got one house or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don’t lose their home, you might have a different perspective.”

“There’s just a fundamental gap of understanding between John McCain’s world and what people are going through every single day here in America,” Obama continued. “You don’t have to be a Nobel Prize laureate economist. You just have to have a little bit of a sense of what ordinary people are going through to understand that we can’t afford eight more years or four more years or one more year of the same failed economic policies that George Bush has put in place.”

He mentioned McCain’s homes two more times briefly during the event and his campaign has already created a TV ad based on the comments.

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, who was an early endorser of Obama and is reportedly on the short list of potential running mates, introduced the senator. He called Obama a unifier who would bring change and said it would be risky to elect McCain during these tough economic times.

“One of the things I’ve heard that makes me laugh the most is some who would suggest that a vote for the senator might be risky,” he said. “Let me tell you want risk is. When the economy, the inflation number in June is the highest it’s been in 27 years, the unemployment rate jacking back up, energy prices where they are, deficit. When the economy is that front and center thing that all Americans are so concerned about right now, to put someone in the White House who says I don’t know much about the economy that is risky, folks. That’s what Sen. McCain said and that’s risky.”

Kaine met for about 15 minutes with Obama at the senator's hotel in Richmond this morning and rode with him to the event.

Wow!!!

The McCain camp is hurting. Since Barack has come from vacationing he's been hitting back hard and his latest line of attack: letting the American people know the truth about John McCain, is working.

The facts are as follows:

- McCain think's making $5 million+ makes you rich (Guess this makes Barack Obama middle class, like most of us).

- McCain doesn't know how many houses he has (He needs to check with his staff. America has a housing crisis he has (at least 4; McCain camp response) in reality reports show 10 worth $13 million+).

- The fact the he gave this 'I'm not sure, I'll ask staff' response and Barack and his surrogates are hitting him on it hard (a nice show of campaign unity of message) and now McCain is using the POW card is priceless.

Keep up the good work Team Obama.

Show America whose really out of touch with the average citizen's and the further damage it would cause America to elect John McCain.
Who cares how many houses the McCains have?

At least, McCain knows how many siblings he has. Does Obama?
I'm glad Obama is showing people the real mccain. Mccain is the elitist, who is out to protect other like rich folk. Hes saving his Cindy from having to pay more taxes. It not easy being a millionair ya know! 500 dollar shoes cost money ya know. I wish for a DOWN TO EARTH FAMILY IN THE WHITE HOUSE!
Obama !
This is the right approach.  Obama needs to take self-rightous McCain down a few pegs.

Now let's do the ad comparing McCain to Mr. Magoo
Obama is struggling to keep his home? ROFL! Maybe his church can help him out? Oh wait a minute, he quit that church. I guess he could sell pencils on the street corner, or wash peoples winshields, you know, just so he can make ends meet.

What a buffon this man has become.
Sounds like O-bummer is jealous.  Maybe he can find more convicted felons to make shady deals with and buy more houses himself.  Or maybe his terrorist friends/mentors and Black Liberation theologists can guide him.
BHO, you are NOT funny. In fact, your sarcasm is sickening.  More and more each day, you look like a WHINING, SPOILED BRAT.

Let's see. McCain owns four homes. Never heard there was anything suspect about the purchase of those homes.

Obama got two sweetheart deals on real estate. The first of buying a $1.5M house for WAY under market price.  Then, he buys the adjoining property for basically pennies on the dollar.  This was all arranged by Obama's friend and mentor convicted felon Rezko. Then, to top it off, Obama just like Chris Dodd got a VIP interest rate from Countrywide (don't forget Dodd who now supports Obama chaired the committee was supposed to oversee banking).

So, if I'm wondering who will be honest and straightforward and better able to handle the economy I think I'll choose McCain.

This poli sci degree holder/lawyer, knows what he's saying, when I say, without Hillary as his VP, Obama will seal his fate...losing it big time in Nov.!

I love it!  The son of Admirals who never would have gotten into Annapolis without his connections has shown  his true colors.

As the proud sister of a working class kid who got into Annapolis because of his own brilliance and hard work, then graduated near the top of his class, I am happy to see that McCain is being exposed for who he truly is: an out-of-touch Aristocrat.

Let's hear it for Obama (and the rest of us hard-working Americans who've had to make our own way in life...)
I don't know what's scarier, either the fact that he's so wealthy that he truly doesn't remember how many homes he has, he truly can't remember at all, or he's lying because he doesn't want to admit to it!
John McCain – risky in war, risky in peace, but first in the hearts of the super-rich.
I think I'm realizing the brilliance of the Obama camp and why they aren't hitting as hard as McCain seems to.  By letting him get all these gaffes out there before the Republicans get smart and lock grandpa in the attic, the Obama camp has been gathering all the necessary quotes an arguments against McBush for the fall.

I should have trusted them.  This is the same campaign that brilliantly grasped the electoral math in the primaries.  They know what they're doing.
its unbelievable no one is playing the mc cain draft answer but KO . just disgracefully .
Here's more on this... snark-infested, focuses on how McCain isn't exactly one of the people:

Kevin, Austin (Sent Thursday, August 21, 2008 12:59 PM) Of course, he’s going to put you on a bed of nails – the devil is in the details.  Actually I laughed out loud because I am passionate about politics and I am sure I’ve said things that got the ire up of close friends (probably today – even); but at the end of each day – the people that know me, believe I mean well.  No matter how inartful I might be.

Life isn't a sound bite and sometimes it takes actual sentences to articulate a thought.  And no, I don't think this is MY blog.  Just ask Jerry CC,TX if what I say isn't true, he is constantly bashed for his opinion.

Truthless, you're not going to cut me a 'typo' break?  Fine,...I've admitted plenty of mistakes on this blog - and here's a news flash, I am sure there will be plenty more!
its about time Obama starts hitting hard and frequent...love it
It is about time Obama started ripping McCain on his comments to date.

By the way, how many times has McCain been caught sleeping at the wheel when a reporter asked him a question he should know the answer to.  I recall (i) the 8 second pause related to viagra, (ii) the response to whether he politicized Georgie because LieberCain went after Obama before Obama did anything, and (iii) this one.

Anyone else care to share some winners?

I really think we (and more appropriately, the media) need to start questioning whether this guy is just too old to have his finger on the trigger.  Seriously, Hilary was blasted in the primaries when Bill said she was tired and slipped up.  McBush slips up daily and gets a free ride.

He is over 70 and senile.  Not an insult - its the truth.

Obama '08
Love it.  I'll see your arugula quip, and raise you forgetting about your 13 million in houses, "nation of whiners," and don't know much about the economy.  bump. set. spike.
Maybe Obama should send out supporters to each McCain home, with signs asking, "Drill here? Drill now?"
Here come the crazy Rezo attacks - which have already been debunked. And the "He was a POW" cry.

Shark jumping should be an Olmpic Sport - McMoney would be in the GOLD!
I know where McCain got his $520 designer shoes.

He got them on his feet!!
What's fuunt about it? I'm 51 and will probably never own a home.

Once again, middle-class Republicans - you thought Bush was one you, now you hopefully know better.

Same deal here.
McCain is astounding since he can't remember how many houses he owns.  I know that my family only has one house, and we live in it.  At this point, I don't think that we will lose our house, but if something goes wrong, we could.  If McCain has a bad year and doesn't stay in the Senate, would he have a problem?  That seems unlikely to me.
Obama never lets up . . . too bad I can't say the same about the media.

Oh well, we have to give John McCain the benefit of the doubt, right Chuck?

Yeah, um Karen, see the thing is - nobody is making you read it! Sometimes people have COMPLEX THOUGHTS that can't be expressed in the form of a POW story.

Go figure.

Why should he? McCain is the real Elitist.
Ask McCain about his $460 Itialian shoes, maybe those laid off American workers would have a job if McCain bought $460 American shoes.

There are awful lot of things McCain doesn't remember.  Doesn't remember votes, doesn't remember saying things, doesn't remember geography of a region in which we are occupying, doesn't remember which faction is which,  now doesn't remember how many houses.  That is not a good presidential trait.  May be that's why he isn't running on issues.  Too hard to remember the real issues.
Barack Hussein Obama: “Let me tell you want risk is. When the economy, the inflation number in June is the highest it’s been in 27 years, the unemployment rate jacking back up, energy prices where they are, deficit.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once again, Obama is long on what's happened, and short on how to proceed. High inflation? Obama supports protectionism and the unions - that will result in higher prices for products. This is also known as inflation. Unemployment? Obama wants to pile on tons of additional taxes on the evil rich American corporations. What do you think those corporations will do when their taxes go up? Barack thinks they'll hire more people. Everyone else knows they will have massive layoffs. Energy prices? Barack is against drilling, says it will take 10 years to get the first drop of oil. He also says he's for "alternative energy", but doesn't say if that "alternative energy" will be available in 5-10-25-50 years. Until then I guess we just pay more and more for oil I guess, which will also add to inflation.
So BHO, your plans doen't look too promising.
Keep it up Obama!! McCain knows how many houses he has unless, of course, he doesn't read like someone else we know..Bush. He just thinks all us "low information" voters are not paying attention.
Maybe they should ask Cindy Lou...or Lieberman, or Graham.
Anyway First Read....what about the draft statement yesterday? What's the McCain campaign response?
And what, exactly, does Obama know about the economy?  His policies are regurgitated socialist/Keynesian proven failures.  He wants to 'raise taxes on the rich', but his definition of 'rich' is the change you can believe in.  He offers 'hope' for an energy solution that relies on a mystical change for some unknown, yet-to-be-discovered 'alternative'.  However, he does know how to make his supporters swoon.  Those of us who can think will be voting for McCain.
Barack Obama has just passed into the 'babbling like a blooming idiot' phase of his campaign.
Why would he let up?  This is a Dukakis-in-a-tank moment.
My fellow bloggers:
We are going to have either President Barack Obama or President John McCain.  That is the choice for this Presidential cycle.  I feel we need to act in a much more civil tone toward one another.
The words of the Senate Majority Leader certainly show us why nothing has been done in Congress during the last few years.  Everybody is so busy disliking everybody else and judging things that happened 30 even 40 years ago.  Yes, Obama took drugs, yes he admitted to drinking, he has associated with some unsavory people.  Yes, John McCain cheated on his first wife, yes he left her and married Cindy shortly after his divorce was final.  Okay we know they are both human beings with human faults.  Let's move on shall we?
Issues!  I want to know if I will still be paying $4 or $5 for a gallon of gas next year.  I want to know if my job is going to be there.  I want to know that my health insurance will still be relatively affordable.  I want my son to be safe and not fear being drafted.  Some of these things I think democrats will do better other things I feel republican will do better.  So it comes down to me to pick the person I feel will work most closely with the other side of the aisle.  Who has the best record of doing that?
We have hear a lot about judgement vs experience.  Well you really must have both.
Let me know what your thoughts are....
"Obama joked about the interview his rival gave yesterday in which the Arizona senator could not recall the number of houses he owns."
--Sounds like the 'silly season' bug bit Obama too.
--I understand that he's weaving a narrative, which is an understandable strategy.  And I'm sure all those crazies here will be all in support of Obama's narrative of McCain, while denouncing McCain's equally legitimate narratives (elitism and inexperience) of Obama in the same breath.  Talk about hypocritical or at the very best, intellectually dishonest.
mccain does't know how many houses he has. he thinks arugula is an elitist green--well wake up- they sell arugula in bags at wal mart food centers ( the favorite place for the rich and famous to shop) tell cindy that the next time she takes her plane to the market ( the only way to get around) to stop by wal mart and pick some up.
       he probably also doesn't remember how many times he committed adultry--probably a higher number than the nunber of homes he ownes.
I don't think we're a nation whiners. I think Obama is a whiner though. So only some people, like Obama, are whiners.
Lily, you obviously have never worked in the mortgage industry. "Sweetheart" deals are so common no one pays attention.  He is still paying a mortage, so who cares?
As for McCain, he comes off as the rich billionaire that has so much money he doesnt pay attention to where it goes.  Thats not the person you want in charge of the country.
Maybe Obama should send out supporters to each McCain home, with signs asking, "Drill here? Drill now?"
Brilliant, man, just freaking brilliant.
Johnny Mac, gotta keep that sense of humor, right?
Who cares how many houses the McCains have?
At least, McCain knows how many siblings he has. Does Obama?
Obama's father abandoned him when he was 2 years old.  He never even knew the man and you want to hold him accountable for not knowing half brothers he has in Kenya? Give me a break guy....seems like Cindy McCain can't remember she has two half-sisters and they live in the U.S.  I don't see you complaining about that.  You are one petty person.
About time Obama started hitting McCainw here it hurts! Get him Obama!
Donna, Lincroft, NJ  - what a refreshing voice around here. Keep it up!
This one's leaving a mark. How do I know? Just read the comments above. McCain looks bad and his worshipers know it.
ET & The Truth (should be named the Liar:
One, Obama didn't say HE was struggling, just that he has only one home and two, why would Obama not know how many siblings he has?  As far as I can tell, he has 7 half siblings, no full siblings.  I have three full siblings, one half sibling and 3 step siblings.  Does that somehow make me a bad person?
when if ever will the staff at msnbc report what the elitist, multable house owing,(says he dosn't know how many houses they own)who says that the draft is fine with him,and would be very willing to send our sons and daughters to fight the repuks oil bush,mccain wars?Or is the free ride card that the bomber has everlasting?
