Veepstakes: Obama picks Biden

Posted: Saturday, August 23, 2008 9:12 AM by Mark Murray

The Boston Globe’s front page: "Biden is Obama's VP choice." Subhead: "Foreign policy credentials boost ticket."

Per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, two big black SUVs just arrived outside of Biden’s home. It would appear a lot of the family will be part of the motorcade to the airport.

The New York Times says the pick “reflected a critical strategic choice by Mr. Obama: To go with a running mate who could reassure voters about gaps in his résumé, rather than to pick someone who could deliver a state or reinforce Mr. Obama’s message of change.”

"Biden, who has twice sought the White House, is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record, and a reputation as a long-winded orator," the AP writes. "Across more than 30 years in the Senate, he has served at various times not only as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, but also as head of the Judiciary Committee, with its jurisdiction over anticrime legislation and constitutional issues."

The Washington Post: “On a day in which speculation about Obama's choice reached a fever pitch, reporters culled every source for news of the pick, even tracing the tail numbers on private planes scheduled to head from the home states of some of the contenders to Chicago on Saturday morning. A Kansas City television station reported that ‘Obama-Bayh '08’ stickers were being mass-produced at a local factory. The scheduled appearances on Sunday's morning talk shows offered other potential clues: Kaine is slotted to appear on "Fox News Sunday." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the top booster of the idea of adding [Chet] Edwards to the ticket, will appear on ‘Meet the Press.’”

The Wilmington News Journal has a special Web section on Biden.

The New York Daily News' blow out cover: "It's Joe!" is over a photo of Obama and Biden from a debate earlier this year. (It also wouldn't be New York without the "Hillary never had a chance" story.)

The New York Post with almost the identical cover.

Even McCain's hometown paper gives it top story love.

GREAT CHOICE I COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER MATE WE ARE ON OUR WAY. OBAMA /BIDEN
WONDERFUL. This will give Barack more room to talk about The economy and other important things while Biden TRASHES McNasty over and over.

Hill supporters get over it. I would have accepted her but its not your choice or Hills choice. Hill is better in a POLICY MAKING position.

She also holds back on McNasty and Barack needs a pitt bull like Biden

I LOVE IT

Obama/Biden 08
YES WE CAN
Joe Biden is a good pick. They will be a great team. Lots of practical knowledge, old fashioned experience, fresh ideas, and caring from both candidates. They really put America First.

I have noticed that the Democrats are consistently sincere and clear-eyed— whereas the Republicans seem snarling, squinty-eyed and attacking. But I guess I am just partial.

OBAMA/BIDEN,08—The real dream team!
OBAMA BLOWS IT WITH VP PICK!

I think he can be ready, but right now, I don't think he is," Biden told ABC News debate moderator George Stephanopoulos about an Obama Presidency. "The presidency is not something that lends itself to on the job training."

Selecting Joe Biden who voted for the Iraq war, won his job in the Senate over 35 years ago when Obama was only 11, detracts Obama ticket's agent of change, yes and he voted for the IRAQ war, an old guy according to Obama camp during the primaries. His selection removes all attacks Obama camp using against McCain…Bad bad decision…Maybe doing what Uncle Ted told him to do, by letting inexperienced Caroline Kennedy make the VP decision wasn’t such a good idea.

Obama will loose…

Biden dropped out of the 2008 race after a poor finish, but not before he talked dismissively of joining someone else's ticket.  "I am not running for vice president," he said in a Fox interview. "I would not accept it if anyone offered it to me. The fact of the matter is I'd rather stay as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee than be vice president." It was his second try for the White House. The first ended badly in 1988 when he was caught lifting lines from a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock. Just like Obama.

VP pick Joe Biden’s known as (“The gaffe machine”) wild mouth managed to run him afoul with Indians, 7-Eleven clerks and African-Americans.

"You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking," he told C-SPAN.  "I mean you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean “he enthused. "I mean, that's a storybook man, not a fairy tale??

This ticket has already begun to will draw deep criticism from Democratic voters who support Obama for his stand against the war in Iraq. Now that’s appears not too important to Obama? This guy is a total flip flopping liar. These voters who will never forgive Biden for approving the war anymore than they would forgive President Bush or former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld nor Obama for playing his faithful supporters as fools. It shows Obama have no Plan or direction.

Lastly, Biden DOES NOT put on the table any state on the table to help with electoral vote?  With Biden comes the very real risk that his loose lips around reporters will render all sorts of new gaffes and scandals in the coming months that will swamp the Obama campaign's message. McCain camp is jumping up and down for this gift from Obama.  http://www.americasright.com/2008/08/obama-sued-in-philadelphia-federal.html

Got the text message at 2:48 a.m.

This is going to be a great choice! I can't wait to see him wipe the floor with Romney.

YES,YES,YES, and YES again.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   OBAMA/BIDEN,08--------YES WE CAN

TO ANY OBAMA OR CLINTON SUPPORTERS-

As a proud Registered DEMOCRAT for almost 50 years, I have a few questions please to anyone who considers themselves open minded-

To Obama supporters- if this situation WERE reversed- how many of you that usually vote Democratic would 'bury the hatchet' and do 'what's right for the party'- honestly?

If the answer is anything but a big YES- than you have no right to make to expect anything from HRC supporters!!!

TO CLINTON SUPPORTERS-

If some Obama Supporters felt as Mad and disenfranchised as you do right now- would you expect their support?

The point is- whether it's 2008 or 2012 or even 2016 -
NIETHER GROUP WILL BE ABLE TO LAY CLAIM TO THE POTUS W/O a majority of support from the other.

Regardless of your preference you have to admit that as Democrats, some Indies and Republicans as well- we have had two OUTSTANDING choices. Rare that one Candidate can motivate millions and in a cycle and we've had 2!!!! (perhaps unfortunately so).

In ANY other year 95% of us would be on the same side and in this economic climate- it would have been NO contest vs. the GOP but unfortunately two historic Campaigns have perhaps hurt each other beyond repair and could drive a wedge for many years to come.

As an aside I find the way some of you Obama supporters talk to HRC supporters to be in really bad form- again a little empathy and humility goes a long way. Why not try exhibiting as much class as your candidate usually does??????

Conversely, I simply do not believe half of the supposed HRC supporters that have 'switched' to McCain- clearly a good percent of these folks are GOP shills, pretending to converted supporters.

Why do I say this?

Because very few People that put their trust in HRC and the issues that she holds dear could possibly support the Republican platform or the horrendous record John McCain has on Woman Issues, including what he did to his ex-wife.

As someone who was more or less uncommitted at the beginning of the Primary process I liked Biden, Edwards and Obama in that order and as the process wore I did get a bit 'Clintoned out' & wasn't thrilled with some of the things that were said (RFK come to mind) BUT with that said - I swear I would hold my nose, a bit and vote for HRC 8 ways from Thursday before I could ever sign my name to what the GOP represent.

AND IF I COULD NOT BEAR TO VOTE FOR CLINTON (OR OBAMA) - I GUARANTEE YOU I'D VOTE FOR A 3RD PARTY CANDIDATE IN PROTEST.

Would I do it out of responsibility or loyalty - NO, I'd do it simply because I know that Clinton's and Obama's positions are very close and I'd be a huge Hypocrite to not support either one (again Obama Dems you better feel this way or shut up, already!- cause you have no right to complain about lack of support from some.

A HUGE PROBLEM HERE FOLKS IS IF NOT THIS TIME - IT MOST ASSUREDLY WILL NOT BE IN 2012- FOR EITHER CANDIDATE - THE BACKLASH AND POLITICS OF IT ALL WILL MAKE IT HUGELY DEVISIVE - YET AGAIN!

I ask each of you to please look in your hearts of hearts and come to the realization Obama people-

Hillary is a voice that must be heard, like it or not-she has earned it!! Just as Obama would have in reverse. Would you want HIS name put in Nomination? WELL?

So seriously whatever your personal beliefs about people- these are for the most part and in any other year your brethren. And Hillary supporters - you will have to have Obama's base to do anything in 2012 if She could get through a sticky nominating process.

I wish the answer would have been a joint ticket- There is little doubt this is how Hillary would have brought the 2 factions together. Is it a tougher proposition for Obama to do such - unfortunately Yes. She goes against 'change' and of course Bill is a huge issue. Surely Obama would lose plenty of Indy and Rep. support if he did and the vetting hasn't even been done on Bill by all reports - BUT you know what- screw it- I WANT MY PARTY BACK and if this will do it so be it!!!!!!

With that said noone could possibly argue what Joe Biden brings some heavy credentials to the ticket w/o much drama.

Unified it still would not be easy- but at least it would bode better for 2012- this way not so much perhaps. Plus I'd love to watch HRC attack the GOP VEEP- good times! If not I would like to see them announce that Hillary would be appoint to a new (Cabinet) position like czar of Health Care reform or some such- I know that they could work well together and that most of this is extremist distortions, Fake HRC to McCain supporters and Media driven.

Still there HAS to be some common ground and mutual respect here- THERE HAS TO BE - or else I greatly fear our future for many years to come- truly will be lost!

Thanks so much for reading and God Bless!

Garry Lewis Dover Del your an idiot!

Bob, Chicago
Am ecstatic about Barack Obama's choice for VP,
They are both very intelligent men who will listen
to one anothers opinions, thoughts and make the
right decisions. They compliment each other.
Let the fun begin!
I like Biden, but won't being for obama ! I just can't after the way he treated Hillary. Obama's supporters are just as bad. This turn of events from the news last night made see who and what obama is capable of. That scares me, so this Independent will now vote for McCain
WONDERFUL. This will give Barack more room to talk about The economy and other important things while Biden TRASHES McNasty over and over.

Hill supporters get over it. I would have accepted her but its not your choice or Hills choice. Hill is better in a POLICY MAKING position.

Nj (Sent Saturday, August 23, 2008 9:24 AM)

Hey NJ,  Now joining that 50% of Hill voters that WON'T vote for that uppidty ass, add the other 50 % !
How is you BOY going to win with only 18 million votes ?
Bad choice...im out...not voting for anyone now.WE NEED A WOMAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE,you want change? well think about it,we have never had a woman in the white house as pres or vp and look what condition our country is in now, just like any house that runs more efficently and productively, the change we need is a woman in the office.Honestly,i am offended by how women are still looked at as the "weaker sex" when on the contrary they are the backbone of our society.
Fantastic choice!
.
HOORAY TO OBAMA — HE HAS LIBERATED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WITH BIDEN AS VP.

When Obama wins the presidency without the overt support of the Clintons and the “Whining White Women” he will have liberated the Dem party from the grips of the ‘radical female faction’ of the party. Let them start their own party — the WWW Party.

He will also liberate the party of the ‘black grievance wing’ of the Dem party; the Rev. Jacksons and Sharptons, et al.

THIS WILL TRULY BE A NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY. HOORAY FOR OBAMA. THE PARTY IS BACK!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I love this ticket!  Biden will appeal to many unexcited McCain and unhappy Hillary supporters. Obama makes good choices and I would expect he will make more as president.
Obama/Biden '08  Ahh, sounds good!
Gary Lewis,

First of all...please learn how to spell.  Loose or Lose?

Second...Obama sued in PA.  What else could one expect from a Clinton supporter.

Any thing and at all costs to get Hillary elected.
She lost because of her arrogance and lack of management skills.

The Clinton's are so FULL of themselves that they feel they are OWED the Presidency
Berg obviously can’t pass the USA’s citizenship test, what a shame. More polarization, smears, and lies. How many times did he flunk the bar?
It is NOT a problem that Obama-Biden is a ticket. It is not a mirror image of Bush-Cheney from 2000. Obama is charismatic,  maybe not as inexperienced nominee as some say, if so more government experience,  less  bull s%$* to tap.  Indeed no, Obama is not arrogant No.2; rather thoughtful attentive, conscientious, astute and just plain old common sense in other words; Obama can listen. We asked him to fight back and he did!

Nobody but Obama/Biden

This is a superb selection on the part of Obama, he's displaying his pure genious yet again...

(IS IT JUST ME, OR IS THIS GUY SHOWING HOW TRULY SMART HE IS, AS WELL AS TO THE TYPE OF LEADER HE WILL BE???)

This balances out the ticket across the board. And not only that, but Biden's heart is in the right place...

What bother's me however is all the pundits saying how this might upset the Hillary supporters -and it may- but incase nobody else figured it out yet, she's not entitled... I've always personally held the Clinton's in high regard, and i'm workin' on getting it back, but this notion that she shouldv'e been consulted about ANYTHING is total nonsense...

Ya know what??? At the end of the day it's either going to be Obama, or McCain, and if Hillary's supporters can't get pass all of this for the sake of their party, their Country, and more importantly, their kids, Then go ahead and vote McCain... Or stay home, in which case is still a vote for McCain by default... {But over the next 4 years try realigning your priorities...}

I'm sure Obama can live with it, for after all he is about the people, and if they don't see that, then they'll undoubtedly get what they deserve...

As a Nation we're about to enter into one of two doors. Which one will it be??? McCain has shown his intellectual capacity, and doesn't conceal his intentions on where he's willing to take our Country, but if the cynical folks can't see this, and to the point that it affects this election, then Oh well, we'll have to suck it up, keep our complaints to ourselves, and try again in another 4 years.

(...Or maybe 8 years, when the minority of this country begin its journey into becoming the majority, which without doubt will prove wiser than our parent's generation)

"HOW OBVIOUSLY SAD, BUT TRUE"
[[They're not there yet, but the potential Obama administration is showing signs of being the most secretive ever.
Richard, Washington State (Sent Friday, August 22, 2008 6:01 PM)]]

Richard, with all due respect, it's called a CAMPAIGN, not an Adminstration.

Of course you have to be secretive.  Would you have him show all his cards all the time so his competition can use it against him?  (Well, maybe as a McCain supporter, maybe you would.) Would you play poker like that - or any other game?

He could have a more transparent administration; however he has to win the battle before he can get there.
THIS JUST IN, OBAMA CHOOSES MCCAIN AS VICE PRESIDENT RUNNING MATE...  THEN HE FIGURED OUT HE WAS BUSY SO HE WENT WITH HIS TWIN.
Biden was my final pick in veep stakes, I couldn't be happier, thanks Barack, no way can McNut's out do that!!
NO WAY for Obama, NOT NOW ! How can anyone especially her supporters vote for him after he used her and us. He lied and played Hillary and us just for support. Well guess what OBAMA ----  NO more !
Great pick!!  I was hoping all along that it would
be Biden.
Attn DNC / Obama

If you wanted unity you got last night ! Obama just unified Hillarys supporters under the McCain banner.
Excellent choice.  I thought the 3am text message was fun and light-hearted. A great way to get everyone juiced up.
Obama will loose…

Uh Garry, the word is lose.

It shows Obama have no Plan or direction.

Nice to see the lunatic left fringe is taking the day off from here. Much more civil and intelligent comments today.
I am a Democrat and have been an ardent supporter of our party throughout the last 4 years of the Bush administration, as well as this election. However, regarding Senator Obama's VP selection and his methods I woke up today completely disgusted by:

1) His obvious insecurity and immaturity. He should have solidified the party by choosing the person who carries 18 million votes in his constituency. And who would be solid on the economy and have the experience for foreign relations advice. He is nothing more than an arrogant, flagrantly ambitious young man who doesn't want his celebrity outshone. It is now clear to me that he will always put his ambition before any instincts for service. Had he truly cared about the party and our success he would have unified the party, the only cost would have been a small chunk of his ego.

2) The Democratic Party has attempted to broker an election in a year when it should be coasting to victory FOR US. Instead of going with a nominee that already had support, already had experience, already had momentum, they conjured up a candidacy that they could control and are trying to force it down our throats. Senator Obama was created by forces in the party and was propelled by the now-famous Super Delegates. Now they have, for the second time, ignored a tremendous part of their constituency in favor of symbolism.

3) The sophomoric, gimmicky school-trick of text messaging the VP pick. Maybe somebody thought that was clever at the time but it made me want to hop on board the Straight Talk Express!! I want a politician with the balls to walk out onto a stage and say what they think. IE: "My pick for Vice President is . .. " Hiding behind some childish gimmick while making such an important decision, one that we cared deeply about, really sealed the deal for me. When he wants to introduce a bill in congress is he going to hire skywriters? Will we be informed of policy changes via candygrams? Or will all decisions now simply be posted on Facebook and YouTube? Is this bold and mature leadership?!

4) His obvious cowardice regarding his choice. Never in the history of modern campaigns has anyone released news of such import, news that is supposed to be full of promise and jubilation, in the wee hours of Saturday morning. He could have released it during the peak of anticipation and audience (what any advisor worth their money would say regarding stagecraft). Instead he did it under cover of darkness where the pundits couldn't say much and more importantly when Senator Clinton's supporters, a huge portion of his constituency, couldn't organize a response prior to his glorious celebrity convention. He was too scared to pick her and too scared to face his party's possibly divisive response. This lets me know a lot about how he will handle controversy, conflict and difficult decisions. He will hide and let his decisions eek out only to those who strongly support him. Or at least only to those who want a personal text message from the president.

5) That after suffering through 8 years of an inexperienced, symbolic figurehead of a President being propped up by an elder statesman, we have to possibly endure 4 more years of the same from our own party.

6)The Democratic Party's, and Senator Obama's, willingness to squander OUR opportunities to salvage his ego. I feel that the support I have given the party has been betrayed.

The postscript to this rant is that I tremendously admire Joe Biden, am happy that he is finally getting the recognition he deserves and wish he COULD be somebody's VP. I think he would be terrific as a VP. He is experienced and has had a life of outspoken, bold service. However, I vote for the President, not his running mate for I know that throughout history it is the President's ego that has driven that office. A smart VP can only do so much, and nothing is final until the person in the Oval Office signs off on it. A Clinton/Biden ticket would have been unbeatable. But he is no solution to Obama's naivete and blind ambition.
The press has  been waiting for Senator Obama to "Seal The Deal"? Well, the deal was sealed with me last night.

Why did CNN and the others complain that Obama was drawing out the announcement and it was a bd choice?  They were the ones with cameras on 3 homes, 2 airports, and talked none stop about an announcement that Obama never stated would come by a certain time.

I they thought the drama was bad, why did they create it?

Anyway, great choice because already older and Catholic voters I spoke to are now much more comfortable with Obama.
