First thoughts: It's Joe Biden

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
DENVER -- We confirmed the news after midnight, and then after trying to get a little sleep, this text message at about 3:00 am ET woke us up: “Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee. Watch the first Obama-Biden rally live at 3pm ET on www.BarackObama.com. Spread the word!” A 3:00 am wake-up call, you just can’t make this stuff up. And there were two collective sounds you could hear over the beeping cellphones and the buzzing blackberries. On the Democratic side, it was a collective "phew." As the days got nearer for the pick, it was hard to find a Democrat -- even savvy Clintonites -- who weren't hoping it would be Biden. Only the most strident Hillary supporters appear to be upset this morning. On the GOP side, the sound you heard was disappointed silence. Of everyone on the short list, the candidate many Republicans least wanted to see Obama pick was Biden. Sure, they've already trotted out their talking points. And the McCain camp even produced a rapid-response TV ad highlighting some unkind words Biden said about Obama during the primaries. (We assume this now means McCain won’t be picking Romney, right? And doesn't the McCain ad actually send the message to swing voters that Obama's willing to surround himself with critics?) But there are too many intellectual conservatives (see David Brooks) who believe Biden's the most qualified guy Obama could have realistically picked.

*** Joe’s strengths…: As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has plenty of foreign policy experience -- something viewed as a weakness for Obama. Also, Biden’s most recent presidential bid raised his national profile, making him a politico whom most Americans know, which could help reassure some voters who have doubts about Obama. In addition, whether it has been in recent speeches or on Meet the Press, Biden has showed that he’s up to this veep responsibility: whacking the opposition. What’s more, during his presidential bid in ’07-’08, Biden demonstrated that he’s a very good debater, a quality the Democrats might want to showcase during the vice presidential debate scheduled for October 2. And electorally, Biden could help lock down Pennsylvania, as well as connect better than Obama has in blue-collar Michigan and the "U" of Ohio (Toledo to Youngstown). A few more thoughts… Biden is someone that will play well with older white voters, a demographic group Obama's struggled with, and he’s very popular with labor and trial lawyers, which while helpful financially for Obama and in the Rust Belt, could fire up the business community even more for McCain.

*** … And his weaknesses: Obama has railed against Washington and Washington insiders during his campaign, but few people are more inside Washington than Biden, who has served in the Senate for 36 years (by comparison, McCain has been in the Senate for 22 years). Furthermore, Biden often has been a gaffe machine -- whether it was calling Obama "clean" and "articulate" (news that marred his presidential announcement in 2007) or stating in 2006, "You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.” And there was that plagiarism scandal that knocked him out of the 1988 presidential race. Perhaps the biggest question: Just how well will Obama and Biden mesh? Has Biden been anybody's No. 2, ever? He's run for president TWICE for a reason (the first time Biden ran, Obama was just starting law school, by the way). Biden has an actual "boss" for the first time in his political career. Is he ready to ride shotgun? And is it a problem that Obama-Biden is a mirror image of Bush-Cheney from 2000? A charismatic, inexperienced nominee taps a more experienced, dare we say, arrogant No.2? In fact, there are a lot of Republicans who believe they can sell Obama-Biden as "the Audacity of Arrogance times two."

*** Back to Springfield: When Obama and Biden appear together this afternoon at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, IL, it will come just more than 18 months after Obama officially launched his presidential bid from that historical venue. (It’s where Lincoln gave his famous 1858 “House Divided” speech, in which he railed against slavery and how it had torn the nation into two. “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”) While today’s event will be a bit warmer than it was on that February 2007 day -- it was close to 10 degrees! -- that announcement back then was the first sign that there was something to Obama’s candidacy. Despite the frigid weather, close to 20,000 showed up on that day, and the crowds at his rallies only grew. Now, with the polls tightening, Obama needs to draw on some of that Springfield magic. Can he deliver?

*** The big bounce? Now for some non-VP news… Yesterday, the McCain campaign released a memo saying that Obama should receive a 15-point (!!!) bounce from his convention. But here’s a big caveat: We haven’t had a back-to-back convention schedule in a very long time, so it may make historical comparisons moot. But let's crunch some numbers from the Gallup chart McCain's campaign sent around. The average Dem convention bounce since '64 is 6.2 points. The average GOP convention bounce since '64 is 5.3 points. The average FIRST convention bounce: 6.3 points. The average SECOND convention bounce is: 5.2 points. With just three instances since '64 of open-seat presidential elections, it's useless to attempt an average if you did this average based on Olympic score (tossing the high and the low), the average convention bounce would be 5.6 points, which feels about the right bar for expectations. The Clinton example the McCain folks are using -- 16 points after the '92 Dem convention! -- is really a reach considering that Ross Perot (who was the front-runner the week before the Dem convo) dropped out the week of the Dem convo. So toss the Clinton bounce out any analysis window.

*** Saying goodbye to those red states? In addition to that memo, the McCain campaign yesterday furiously pounced on a report that Team Obama was pulling its advertising in red states -- like Alaska, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, and North Dakota -- suggesting that the Obama camp was abandoning its (almost) 50-state strategy. But as Lee Corso might say, “Not so fast, my friend.” A senior Obama campaign source told First Read that the campaign wasn’t planning to be on TV next week during their convention, but the McCain is up with negative spots in 11 states, and they wanted to match them in those 11 (which doesn't include any of those ruby-red states). Moreover, the source assures us that the campaign will resume its larger TV buy once the convention ends.

*** On the trail: McCain is down in Sedona, AZ. Obama holds his rally in Springfield at the Old State Capitol.

What more could the country want? A capable, young, motivating man and an old guy who is willing and to keep up with this fast changing world.

Just wanted to nip the idea being pushed by the media that you can't be experienced and work for change.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Anybody ever hear of Nelson Mandela? The Dalai Lama? Ralph Nader?

Change is not an age thing - it's an improvement thing - and Joe Biden has what it takes - I'm thrilled!

Obama/Biden '08/'12
Got the text message at 2:48 a.m.

Joe Biden is going to shore up the areas where Obama is lacking nicely.

http://www.rodneyhopper.com
"dare we say, arrogant No.2"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Good grief. Didn't even wait 24 hours to start with the Republican talking points.

Funny how McCain is never arrogant - even when he know more about Iraq than the President of the country.

Go figure.
Great choice Barack made in Joe Biden!  I can't wait for our "Hero" Joe to tear into "Bush Hugger" McCain and his flunky "Traitor" Joe Lieberman.

Nice to see the First Read crew up and at 'em so early on Saturday morning.  In answer to a question one of you posted yesterday is that you should all slip in a good night's sleep every night over the next few weeks.  If you go sleep deprived then you'll start sounding weird so get your sleep so you're bright-eyed and bushy tailed every morning.

Typical that "Liar" McCain and his campaign staff of liars and hate mongers are resorting to lies and their smear and fear attacks.  So typical that they whine that Barack eats arugula instead of being impressed that he eats healthy and smart.  Yeah and who else but an elitist would serve cous cous at a barbeque but "Elitist" McCain?  Only elitists get their home and picture on the cover of Architectural Digest!

Only Barack and Joe can bring honesty and integrity back to the White House!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Excellent choice!

Obama's first major presidential decision was a very well thought-out one. These two will make a powerful team!
You tell um Nashville. I think that the contrast between the two is great. This is probably the best dou possible, without it becoming to radical like a Obam/HRC ticket would have been deemed. Obama/Biden 08
Can he deliver you ask. Where Have you been? He already has delivered. Me thinks you have choosen not to notice.
Too bad Obama didn't get to announce first to his followers.  He played try to catch the media and he ended up getting caught.

I knew it was Biden before his followers were informed.  I don't have to worry about having Obama send me e-mail after e-mail and text after text drumming up financial support for his campaign.

I like Joe Biden and I think it is the safe choice.  However, the PUMA groups are going to really have a field day with Obama's not even vetting Hillary or giving her any consideration at all.

Again I like Biden but Obama.  I honestly don't know.  I may or may not vote for him.  Leaning towards not.  He is so arrogant.

Laura, Boston
Biden is a great pick. I would have voted for him as President. Joe will rip Romney or Pawlenty or whomever to shreds. Go Joe!
Change + Experience are you ready for the Movement Obama/Biden

Obama/Biden,
As a right-leaning independant in a red-state that is supposed to be in play (Georgia), Biden serves zero appeal for me to vote for Obama.  I cannot see how Biden makes Obama more electable as he doesn't have the same foreign policy issues as Obama's far left core and many conservatives will be put off by his his socialist views in the domestic arena.

My wife and I looked at each other this morning with a collective look of disbelief and said, "Biden?"  Not a female, not a political moderate, not from a red-state... not gonna help.
So, he can't even keep a little promise like "Sign up and you will be the first to know". What a fraud!!! Business as usual....Thought he was for change....Yeah, right...
Whoo Hooooo !!!

Be afraid McCain...be very afraid.

Obama/Biden !!!!
I have always admired Senator Biden for his dedication to his family after the tragic loss of his wife and child.  He put family first, which means he understands the cares and needs of American families better than most politicians.

It was fun to get that text message.  Congratulations to the Obama team for pulling that off.  I imagine someone is still explaining to McCain what a text message is.

Turned on MSNBC to watch the coverage of Biden's selection.  Turned it off as soon as Moron Joe Scarborough made his appearance.

Time for MSNBC to lose Joe Scarborough.
obama made an excellent choice.  as an african american this choice was not just about obama shoring up his foreign affairs credentials but also giving white america a good reason to vote for him.  obama was smart in that area.  the only complaint i have is the timing of the announcement because if he had made the announcement on monday he would had counter attacked with a bounce in the polls with john mccain's surge that he was getting from saddleback with rick warren.
I like Biden, but won't being for obama ! I just can't after the way he treated Hillary. Obama's supporters are just as bad. This turn of events from the news last night made see who and what obama is capable of. That scares me, so this Independent will now vote for McCain
Fineman Newsweek-

In short, Obama behaved like a grownup. Even his much-criticized failure to "vet" Sen. Hillary Clinton means less than meets the eye. I talked two months ago to one of her closest legal advisors, who told me that she didn't really WANT to be considered for the number two job--in no small measure because the process would have required Obama's lawyers to comb through her husband's foundation and its murky sources of income.

In that sense, Obama did her a favor by not really demanding to consider her. She would have had to say "no."

I'm watching Morning Joe, and once again there is an annoying sound in the studio that sounds like a pager going off.  What's up with that?!?  It's been there since the earliest primaries and it forces me to mute the TV or change the channel.  Honestly MSNBC, what is the problem in the studio?
I'm glad Obama took the vacation to think things over...
Hillary will be put on the supreme court bench if she plays her cards right...we've not hear the last of the Clintons...Bill will just have to put his clown suit back on and shake that finger no more..
A new beginning for the Jack A$$ Party
With Obama in the White House I fear we are looking at another Jimmy Carter term.
McCain is not in SEDPONA He is in CORNVILLE I know that He never corrects this miss address, can you spell ELITEST. BTW, great pick!
Let's hope Hillary Clinton's supporters don't put a damper on this convention. Let Barack Obama & Joe Biden have their week. It's a terrific democratic ticket. I can feel the excitement starting to build up towards Thursday evening when Senator Obama gives his acceptance speech.

MSNBC is doing a terrific job covering this story, from late late last night all through this morning. When the story first unfolded last night, it was helpful to listen to Keith, Chuck & David S. & others give their immediate insights to why this ticket works. I can't wait to see the Obama/Biden ticket together for the first time this afternoon in Springfield, Ill.

What an exciting time for our country.
Wait a minute! Are you people living in the real world?  Joe Biden is a 3x loser who couldn't convince Democrats he could win.  Obama's pick is a sure loser in presidential politics and is another in a growing list of contradictions in his campaign.

The Republicans have weathered the Unknown Obama-factor and have nothing to fear with Biden.  This is really a concession by a party that really is not trying to win the White House but making a grand effort to appear as the party of inclusion which only feeds the delusion of people like those who think this was a good choice.

Biden cannot carry Pennsylvania.  He can only count on Delaware.  How come none of these places Obama is said to be counting on ever voted for Biden in his 3 failed attempts to be the Democrat nominee?

Obama was weak with Latinos and there is a rift between them and Blacks that is growing wider as soon their numbers will only increase.  So what does Obama do?  Cast off Richardson.

Biden is a senator like Obama with NO executive experience.  But the main thing is that he is a perennial loser and this will taint Obama.

Obama has been listening to advisors of past failures, kerry, Gore and now Biden.  Again the Clintons, the only successful Democrat since LBJ has been effectively shut out since the Gore disaster and the Democrats have conceded the White House.

Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro should resign or be fired because they clearly are examples of writers with good form and no substance.
Pity that major media expects any political wisdom to come from such sources.
"Laura, Boston" He is so Arrogant"
you mean Uppity dont you?
why do the repugs and hillary supporter, see  a mix race, smart  pearson being uppity? God help you  sick hateful people
Laura,

Obama isn't arrogant, he's confident. I guess some people can't understand a black man who isn't a 'Tom' like Clarence Thomas, or angry like Jesse.

Give the man a chance.
I am so happy it wasn't Hillary, McCain is sure to win now!  I rather have four more years of Bush than one minute with Obama.
This is the "West Wing" all over again.  A candidate so inexperienced nationally that he needs the old guard except that in real life, this goes against Obama's message of change.  Which got him this far.  A 36 year vetern of Washington.  Sorry, doesn't wash with me. Only on West Wing (Santos - Jimmy Smits character) picked Leo who had no elected office history but health problems.  While Biden in real life is gaffe machine and has said McCain would be a great president and would be honored to work with him.  While saying Obama was to experienced.  Reading some of Biden's past ties; tells me this could backfire big time.  Biden's family ties to lobbyists - that Obama has said he has no use.  His gaffes.  His old Washinton feel.  Sorry, not sure this would have been a good pick.  Gives McCain a better chance to win.  And Hillary to to say "I told you so" for 2012. Biden twice ran for president and never got far, so I don't see how he is capable of getting those groups who are iffy of Obama whether he was born in Pennsylvania or not. Those people didn't come to him in the first place. Which is why he had to drop out in the first place.  And those plagerizing charges 20 years ago.  Bad move Obama.
I am so excited and energized for this election now.  Senator Biden will be a great Vice President on so many levels.  I am thrilled to have a knowledgeable, capable, caring, determined team in the Democrats.  I am feeling hopeful for the first time in a long time for this wonderful country!
When will the Hillary whining end?

Strength and experience indeed.

Geez.

It figures that NBC is so to the left that no one is willing to print Obama's weakness. He is arrogant,A supporter of Ayers,(how patriotic is that?)and is the Hitler of our time. He wants everyone to be on an equal playing field and to take from the rich to give to the poor. Capitalism just doesn't work that way. You have to be willing to work and put your money where your mouth is. Obama would ruin our econmy.
So-the man who was hired to teach constitutional law and instead taught students' how to get elected' and was invited to leave his teaching post selects a man who never met a speech he couldn't lift as his running mate.  And the glassy-eyed, slack-jawed followers will chant 'yes we can'.  Fortunately, the rest of us, those who can THINK, will not drink the kool-aid.  The Democratic party is lost.
*** … And his weaknesses: Obama has railed against Washington and Washington insiders during his campaign, but few people are more inside Washington than Biden, who has served in the Senate for 36 years (by comparison, McCain has been in the Senate for 22 years).

That's not a weakness in Biden's case, First Read. He is clean. Obama wants to get rid of all the corrupt politicians in Washington. Joe is a diamond in the rough. He will help, and he is the best back-up for President out there.
Mccain just sits on his a** at home on the weekends and gets votes for being white!  What a sick and sad nation we have become with republicans at the helm.
I am thrilled with Senator Biden as VP.  Senator Obama made an excellent choice.

Hte repukes are really angry and mad about it as demostrated by their early attacks.  They know they just lost.  They need to go with Romeny, but the evangelicals will sit at home if they do!  Haaaaaaaa
When Obama doesn't get the jump he thinks Biden will give him he will be singing WHAT KINDA FOOL AM I!
Wrong choice what happened to changing Washington out with the old in with the (OLD) hm! this doesn't fit

I am an Obama guy, but Joe Biden is the only presidential candidate I have ever given money to.  Great pick. Biden is a sawed off shotgun. Will he hurt Obama at some point with a gaffe?  Absolutely.  But he will blow holes in McCain that Obama never could and that is despirately needed at this point.  Biden single handedly ended Rudy Guliani's campaign with his "noun, verb, and 911" comment.  Your VP should be an attack dog, and Biden is far better suited than anyone else on either side in that regard.
The article linked below, explains why the press won't go after McCain. He has terrorized them for decades when they have played hardball exposing the truth about him. They are terrified of getting on the wrong side of a potential 'President McCain'. He never lets go of his grudges. He goes after them like a heat seeking missile, no matter how dated they may be.

The article highlights mean spirited vendettas he has waged. One was for no reason other than his prey, a female Governor, was a democrat. He gleefully admitted it to a friend, but sanctimoniously denied it when questioned by the press.

The article is long, but well worth the time. (Especially on a slow news day). It is written by a very brave reporter from McCain's state of Arizona, that has covered him for decades. It is supported by public records.

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/content/printVersion/848709
Ok, so there's a real easy response for McCain's attack ad with Biden saying he'd like to run w/ McCain:  his response is: "yes, that was the pre-2008 John McCain.  He's no longer that guy.  He's now a puppet for Steve Schmidt and Karl Rove."
I am thrilled with Obama's VP pick...Joe Biden!!! I believe Biden adds to the Obama ticket in so many ways. Biden won't be a "yes man" to Obama like so many have been in the Bush administration.
FR, I find your comparison of Obama/Biden to the Bush/Cheney of 2000 pretty galling!! Obama/Biden is NOTHING like the Stonewallers Bush/Cheney or even McCain and whoever his VP choice will be. McCain, just like Bush/Cheney of 2000 and now, have been stonewalling the press and the American people (i.e. medical records/health) about everything. An Obama/Biden administration will turn the lights back on in our governmental process unlike Bush/Cheney or McCain who believe that "the people" don't have the right to know what is going on in OUR government and prefer the dark to the sunlight. Shame on you FR for even attempting to make that kind of comparison!!!
For those Hillary supporters that still want to support a woman, consider Green candidate Cynthia McKinney, former six-term congresswoman.  She's strong on the issues and even selected another woman, Rosa Clemente, for her vice-presidential candidate.  Why spend your vote on patriarch McCain when you can vote for a woman?
"I'm watching Morning Joe, and once again there is an annoying sound in the studio"

To PJS, Minnesota:
That annoying sound this morning in the MSNBC tv studio is Moronic Joe talking.  I was glad to see MSNBC tv not wasting time showing the stupid Olympics that are Made in China and like "sotiredofignorance" I changed the channel.  Hopefully soon MSNBC will put on someone with a clue so I don't have to put up with watching CNN and their insipid coverage from insipid Wolf.

MSNBC tv - Please cancel Moronic Joe and give Chuck Todd and the First Read crew the morning time slot so we can get some real news and less repugnant one's talking points and lies.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
With all the accolades of Biden...being able to be a force for change…I wonder why he did so poorly in the primaries. He certainly has the experience and gravitas to help out where Obama lacks…but I find it disingenuous to say that Obama has a way of bringing change to a Washington that is broke and then says that if I am unable to complete my term. Then I want everything to back to normal, sounds like the same old politics of yesterday.
OK choice would have liked to see Hil as the pick but will vote for Obama anyway.
HOORAY TO OBAMA — HE HAS LIBERATED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WITH BIDEN AS VP.

When Obama wins the presidency without the overt support of the Clintons and the “Whining White Women” he will have liberated the Dem party from the grips of the ‘radical female faction’ of the party. Let them start their own party — the WWW Party.

He will also liberate the party of the ‘black grievance wing’ of the Dem party; the Rev. Jacksons and Sharptons, et al.

THIS WILL TRULY BE A NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY. HOORAY FOR OBAMA. THE PARTY IS BACK!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is NOT a problem that Obama-Biden is a ticket. It is not a mirror image of Bush-Cheney from 2000. Obama is charismatic,  maybe not as inexperienced nominee as some say, if so more government experience,  less  bull s%$* to tap.  Indeed no, Obama is not arrogant No.2; rather thoughtful attentive, conscientious, astute and just plain old common sense in other words; Obama can listen. We asked him to fight back and he did!
Nobody but Obama/Biden

Yeah, right... you knew the VP b4 the text?
"I like Biden, but won't being for obama ! I just can't after the way he treated Hillary. "

What does this even mean?  Because he won?  Or because she isn't VP?  She didn't want the position, likely because the vetting process would have brought her myriad indescretions to light.

Biden is a great choice.  Kudos to Obama.  Here's hoping at least 51% of us are smart enough to elect the guy.  My faith in collective American common sense are a little shaken after eight years of self-defeating shenanigans.
Some "change".
BJ, CA

Bill had every right to shack his finger with all the garabge slung his way. The way the media and Obama has treated Hillary is more than a shame. Why sould Hillary be vetted like everyone else she was a presidents wife. I believe it to be rude and not a good thing to have treated Hillary like he did. I also think that he will pay for it.  Jean
Great choice! Indeed Joe Biden in the Administration represents a change...
You saw it during the Democratic Debates: "Joe is Right!" They were all relying on him for their talking points. He'll be a great intellectual contributer to Obama's charisma. Now they can work on the action steps needed to define what "Change" means.
