Abortion politics: Biden never refused communion

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
WILMINGTON, Del. -- One day after debuting as Barack Obama's vice presidential pick, Joe Biden plans to spend a quiet day at home, with his only public appearance likely being this morning's trip to his nearby parish for Sunday mass.

Monsignor Joseph Rebman said he was pleased to see a member of his flock on the ticket, but said that Biden “can't guarantee the Catholic vote” for the Democrats.

“They don't vote as a block anymore,” he said, speaking to NBC News at St. Joseph of the Brandywine church, where Biden attended mass. “And as you know, the senator has some positions that don't go along with the Catholic Church.”

Rebman said he understood Biden to be personally opposed to abortion, but that he “doesn't want to impose” his views on others and often has voted with abortion rights supporters. He added that some of the other parish priests and the bishop of the diocese have spoken with him about his pro-choice votes, but that they have never refused him Communion, as some other dioceses have done.

“The bishop's conference has left it to the individual bishops to decide how they want to handle it,” he said.

At the small church, Biden and his family sat in the second-to-last pew, with Secret Service agents behind him. Rebman joked that all of the media outside of the church was for a guest speaker for the service, Joseph Sundaram, who was visiting as part of a missionary cooperative from his diocese in South India.

“It's kind of appropriate that the Almighty God placed him here today because Sen. Biden is here,” Rebman said. “As you know he has just received a new appointment -- and how could we not know about that. The senator has received this appointment, as we understand, because of his expertise in foreign affairs.”

After he said that, Biden's eyes widened, and he made the sign of the cross.

“It's nice that he gets a little educating this morning about some of the needs of our church and the community as well in south India,” Rebman continued.

The pastor later joked about the confluence of distinguished “Josephs,” himself, Sundaram, Biden and St. Joseph.

“We won't forget this day for a long time,” he said.

Biden was also noted during the prayers of the faithful, as the congregation prayed “that he may find increased wisdom and strength as he becomes more involved in the presidential campaign as candidate for vice president.”

After exiting the church, Biden shook hands with many of his fellow parishioners, and could be seen apologizing for the disturbance he was causing. Parishioner Becky Hardy said that Biden was a fairly regular presence at services here, and actually serves as an usher often when he attends. But she was surprised to see him there today.

Rebman said Biden also occasionally attends services at St. Patrick's Church in downtown Wilmington, usually because there are Sunday evening masses there, and Biden is often called on to appear on Sunday morning talk shows.

Biden is scheduled to be in Denver tomorrow, but no firm schedule has been set yet. He will officially accept the nomination on Wednesday night.

As it should be!

Wow, a pro-life politician willing to step outside the box to try to understand other people's views. Maybe he sees that maybe God and Jesus didn't make this a cookie-cutter world with cookie-cutter answers and he may not have the only 'Christian' view and try to beat everyone over the head with it. I think I like this guy. Good job Obama.

Let word go forth to every woman, who supported Hilary Clinton, and who also supports a woman’s right to choose, that staying home or voting for McCain works against their own self interests and their own hopes for other women. McCain believes that life begins at conception, that the life of the fetus should be given the same weight as the life of the mother – and if elected, he would appoint new Supreme Court and other justices, who agree with this position.
Have you met the average Catholic, Monsignor? They're not exactly proponents of hard-line church orthodoxy. McCain, whose religious beliefs are whatever his handlers tell him they are, can make this a single-issue campaign if he wants but, last I looked, the majority of Americans were pro-choice. Especially the PUMA's!
Joe Biden is a good and decent man.  The Lord will protect and guide him as he walks the path to the Vice-Presidency of the United States of America.

Roe vs Wade is the law of the land in America.  The book of Romans states to 'obey the laws of the land"

It became a law under a republican president and has remainded a law under 5 republican presidents that do nothing about it but talk as it remains a law.
It is not practical to expect Evangelicals to abandon abortion, one of the most passionate issues they have, when they enter the polling booth.  Whether we are for, or against abortion, I believe it is a troublesome issue for anyone of good conscience. Not all Gynecologists will perform them. I was shocked to see one who routinely did them on Saturdays in his office, on an HBO documentary desperately advocating women, and girls to prevent unwanted pregnancies in order to avoid having abortions. Toward the end of his life, he had lost his easy, low key personality. He was frightened, even paranoid. He carried a gun to his office out of fear of pro-life zealots who were killing his kind. He died of a heart attack in his fifties. I cannot say I was surprised.

At the age of 21, I was hospitalized with what later became known as toxic shock syndrome. My doctors informed me I needed a hysterectomy. Of course I balked. I was unmarried at the time, but I hoped to be some day, as well as, a mother. My Minister suggested I seek a second opinion. There was a new Obey-Gyney, fresh out of Medical School, that my sister, and many of my friends were touting as wonderful, caring, and competent. I saw him. He disagreed with the other physician’s treatment plan, and prescribed one that would watch me a bit more closely than was usual for other women. He said I would never have children however. Soon after I married. No one was more thrilled than he when miraculously I delivered 3 healthy babies in three years.

Twenty years after my first visit to his office, he decided it was time for the surgery that had been prescribed long before. At the time we did not have Medical Insurance.  Our income was low enough that The Department of Welfare issued temporary benefits in my case, but in an amount far reduced from what my Doctor charged for such a procedure.  He very kindly accepted whatever Welfare was willing to pay. By the Grace of The Lord, he saved my life, again.

My Doctor, and the Abortionist are one, and the same.

I don’t believe over-turning Roe V. Wade will stop abortions. Women were having them long before they were legal in America. I believe evangelicals are correct, but only partially. I don’t think that abortion should be used as birth control. I do believe that in certain emergencies such as rape, danger to the mother, and suffering of the fetus, etc., rare abortions should remain a legal option. The Lord will judge whether or not I have come to a just decision in forming my opinion.

I also believe an answer to our problem lies in the Scriptures. Even so, evangelicals are not likely to agree, even with the Holy Bible.

It is a fact that there are far more women than men in this world. Far more. It is cruel to consign them to the unfulfilled life that a shortage of ‘husbands’ makes for. Sexual drive, and the desire for family are the creations of The Lord, no less than we.  It cannot be denied, and it is not.

In the 1920’s, and 30’s, my unmarried Grandmother gave birth to eight children out of wedlock. The state of New York took them away, separated them, and placed them in orphanages  in several different states. They were placed in foster homes after a while. There was sexual, and other abuses visited upon the children. Most of them were reunited in adulthood, but one brother was lost to the family forever. My Grandmother died having a back alley abortion. I don’t blame her. Our so-called system of monogamy is at fault.

We think of ourselves as monogamists in America, and Europe, but is that the truth? Many eschew, even despise polygamy, as subscribed in the Scriptures. Abraham, and Jacob, etc., had multiple wives. The Lord commands that up to 4 wives is lawful when the husband marries women, provides them with their own home,  (as in a separate lodging), as well as, their every need.  They must be treated equally in every way, and with kindness.  If a husband fears he cannot provide for, and treat his wives equally, he is commanded to marry only one. How I wish my Grandmother had had the option to be a wife, albeit a co-wife. The Lord had a plan for her, and the many women in this world who outnumber men, but men of western society don’t want to accept responsibility for the polygamy that they practice as designed by the Satan. That’s right. Polygamy is practiced in the west. But it is practiced in such a way that pleases the devil; outside the sanctity, and accepted responsibility of marriage. The latest case in point is John Edwards.

I know that this comment is shocking. It is not made to make people uncomfortable. It is just that our system does not work. It is man’s system. It is women who are left holding the bag when men are finished chasing their irresponsible pleasures.

In Germany after WWII, and the loss of so many of their men, a secular, (non-religious),  group of German women petitioned the courts to allow that women be able to share husbands.

What is society to do with the overflow of women? Imagine the good we could do in opening the way for these women to be respected wives, and mothers.

Submitted for your consideration as to the issue of abortion, and the eroding circumstances our thinking has brought us to.
I beleive Jesus said do this in rememance of me when taking communion. I do not recall Jesus saying you must beleive this or that way or just what you must believe  only to receive communion in memory of him.I think any one can do this in any church if they are doing it for that reason
Sometimes he serves as an USHER!  I love it!  How can you not love Joe Biden?  I can't wait for the stories about him bagging groceries, giving old ladies piggy-back rides and growing plants in pediatric rehab wards to increase oxygen levels.  You my boy Joe!
Touching.
Dang! Can't even go to church in peace.

Literalaly speaking, for Christ's sake, leave the man alone
No doubt here as to which left side the author and the Senator are on. Complete with the "he is against abortion personally but doesn't want to impose his views on others" cop out. You believe in something or you don't. He won't get communion in our church.
century.
Acceptance is apathy!
Nobody but Obama

I think Biden has the right idea. You can be personally against something and at the same time not push your views onto others.

There's a difference between taking a stand and zealousness. I think Biden fits just right between them.

This is shaping up to be a great ticket.

Welcome aboard, Senator Biden and all your voters.
The Monsignor is a good speaker with carefully crafted sermons.  Joe Biden's faith is strong, but he does not wear it on his sleeve like far too many others.  I had the great pleasure of going to Mass at St. Joseph's a month ago, but didn't see the Bidens.

I'm sure Joe, Jill and the rest of the family don't want to cause an uproar.  Everywhere you go in Greenvile, you hear nice things about the family and this area's pretty Republican and this voter thinks that's pretty good.

Donna and all Hillary supporters:

I cannot fathom how intelligent people can support Senator Clinton after the incompetent campaign that she led.  Her inability to make tough decisions regarding her campaign, her inability to spend the amount of money she had wisely, her inability to take responsibility for her own incompetence shows her unsuitability to be POTUS.

There will be other women candidates for President, better candidates than Clinton was.  Like my daughter.

I am a 56 year old mom of four, who started out supporting Clinton, but quickly became disenchanted with her campaign.
Many babies have incredibly survived the brutality of abortion and lived outside the womb. Obama wants the medical profession to allow the murder to be completed by not doing anything.  In the famous case which was argued before then illinois state sen. obama, he tabled a vote to protect the most innocent of lives after the baby survived. vote for obama and be proud that you're supporting a vote for death
Will some reporter check with the Bush & McCain pastors to see if they are considering refusing service to them because of their support for the death penalty, torture and war? Try to be fair and balanced?
