Dem Convention, Day One

The Obama campaign and convention officials held a briefing yesterday with NBC News to discuss the convention and what to expect. Some highlights:
-- The convention will try to drive home two points: 1) that this is a “serious moment” for the United States and 2) that there are two difference directions where Obama and McCain want to take the country
-- The Obama and Clinton camps are working out the mechanics of Wednesday’s roll-call vote, which will begin at 5:00 pm ET. Said one Obama adviser: “We have a high degree of confidence of how the roll-call vote” will work.
-- The 76,000 people who will fill Invesco Field on Thursday night will be expected to do much more than listen to Obama’s speech. They will be texting their friends to get them to watch and get involved; they will get their friends to sign up for the campaign’s email alerts; and they will be working the phones.
-- After the convention, Obama and Biden will leave on a tour of Industrial Midwest states.

Regarding that first point, the New York Times writes: “Mr. Obama’s aides said they had learned from what they described as the mistake of the 2004 Democratic convention - when aides to Senator John Kerry’s campaign sought to forbid convention speakers from going after President Bush - and would use their time to draw contrasts with Senator John McCain, particularly on the economy and his opposition to abortion rights. ‘The stakes of this election will be made very clear,’ said David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s chief strategist. ‘We are going to define the choice.’”

“At the same time, acknowledging persistent unease with Mr. Obama among a significant segment of voters, his aides said they would use speeches and presentations during the next four days, including having Al Gore introduce Mr. Obama for his acceptance speech Thursday night, to offer a fuller biography and a more detailed plan of what he would do as president.”

So how divided is the Democratic Party? Maybe not as much as you think, according to this New York Times/CBS poll. “More than half of the delegates that Mrs. Clinton won in the primaries now say they are enthusiastic supporters of Mr. Obama, and they also believe he will win the presidential election in November, the poll found. Three in 10 say they support Mr. Obama but have reservations about him or they support him only because he is the party’s nominee. Five percent say they do not support him yet.”

And/but the Washington Post reports, "[T]he most important events of the first days of the convention will center on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her supporters. The senator from New York won 18 million votes in her nomination battle with Obama, and the enthusiastic support of her followers is critical to Obama's hopes of winning in November. She will speak Tuesday night, but her message at events behind the scenes may be just as important.”

“In an important shift, Democratic officials confirmed Sunday that Clinton will release her delegates to Obama at a reception on Wednesday. Clinton's gesture has the potential to reduce the appearance of friction while reinforcing her status as one of the party's most formidable power brokers." This story also had the news about Obama and Bill Clinton talking last week, on the same day Obama offered Biden the No.2 slot. But Obama apparently did NOT tell Clinton about his pick.

Speaking of Bill Clinton, Politico's Harris (one of best biographers of Bill out there) Allen report that the former president is upset about his speech topic. He wants to speak on the economy but the topic Wednesday night is national security. "The former president is disappointed, associates said, because he is eager to speak about the economy and more broadly about Democratic ideas - emphasizing the contrast between the Bush years and his own record in the 1990s. This is an especially sore point for Bill Clinton, people close to him say, because among many grievances he has about the campaign Obama waged against his wife is a belief that the candidate poor-mouthed the political and policy successes of his two terms.”

“Some senior Democrats close to Obama, meanwhile, made clear in not-for-attribution comments that they were equally irked at the Clinton operation. Nearly three months after Hillary Clinton conceded defeat in the nomination contest, these Obama partisans complained, her team continues to act like she and Bill Clinton hold leverage."

Bloomberg News on what Michelle Obama needs to do tonight. "After tapping veteran Democratic strategist Stephanie Cutter as her chief of staff in June, Michelle Obama, 44, has softened her image by appearing on television programs such as ‘The View.' Going into this week's convention, she is on the covers of Essence and Ebony magazines. ‘Her first job on Monday night is to reintroduce herself to the country and to the world because she's never had a larger audience,' said Myra Gutin, a communications professor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and author of a book about first ladies. ‘The second task is to introduce her husband to the audience in a way in which she knows him and perhaps we don't.’”

The AP also previews Michelle Obama's speech today. "If part of her function has been to reveal the husband and dad side of the man addressing the masses, she also needs to show she's just a woman, just an American, just a patriot…  In the primaries, she was dubbed 'the Closer' for her ability to persuade the undecided voters walking in to come on board before walking out. Now she's the opener, the first-night star called upon to testify about her husband's vision and values, and perhaps settle some doubts about herself."

Might Ted Kennedy show up? Despite his illness, "the senator has recently told people that he has a speech written for the convention and that he badly wants to come, pending a final medical consultation," the Boston Globe reports. "Buzz has built among Massachusetts politicos that Kennedy would come, and yesterday a Bay State Democrat close to the family confirmed that Kennedy has decided to travel to Denver, probably for an opening-night address."

And live at Red Rocks… Like a man with the pressure off, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine enthusiastically introduced the marquis act of the night -- and who this east coast reporter most wanted to see -- Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds at Red Rocks in Colorado, a special place for Dave Matthews fans.

"Raise your hand if you know how many homes you own… You can't make this stuff up," an ebullient Kaine said, donning jeans and an airy, short-sleeve button down shirt, looking every bit the backyard dad. Kaine went on to sing the praises of Obama and passionately tick off the reasons he got involved with the Obama campaign.

This NEEDS to happen -- and quick.  I think that a whole segment of voters are still waiting to hear what Obama will DO when he's president.  His speeches are inspiring to be sure, but people need to hear the bread-and-butter issues discussed by the candidate.

Time for a Bush/McCain BashFest.  Time to stick it to these liars and expose them for the false patriots that they are.  Time to show the country what damage these New Age Tory Traitors have done to our democracy.  I'm so glad that Obama has learned from Kerry's biggest mistake of 2004 and will go after Bush/McCain as they deserve to be gotten after.

Plus it' time for the Democrats to define themselves and stop allowing the repugnant ones to control the narrative.  What a bunch of self serving malarkey it was last Friday when the repugnant ones said that if Barack didn't get a 15 point bounce from the convention that he was not performing up to expectations.  No one gets a 15 point bounce out of a convention and "Warmonger" McCain won't get one either.

Only Obama/Biden can bring back honesty and integrity to the White House.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
This stuff is relevant. Why is the on-air talk all about 1968? Is Pat Buchanan the producer?

Put this stuff -- real issues -- on the air.
I heard the chair of Just no Deal" over the weekend stating how Hillary was so mistreated by the Obama campaign and the press. I am not sure if they realize this or not but the Repubs would have made that look like powderpuff stuff if she had won the nomination. The R's wanted Hillary and Bill to consolidate their base; they had a dosier a mile high on the two of them. Actually, I would have liked to have seen Biden as our candidate, but I would have been more than pleased with Hillary and will absolutely vote for Obama. This election should not be trialized...there is too much at stake this time. In hockey during the playoffs, the teams fight for every inch on the ice and despite being whacked and punched and checked and bloodied after the end of every series each team comes out to shake hands and pats each other on the back saying great game, way to go, and they appreciate how hard each one of them played. Its called reciprocal respect for one's opponent. We now the to vote the Big "O".
What is it with these Hillary Fans!!!.. No one owes her anything... she human like the rest of us..She’s no God!!! She lost..he had no obligation to select her...she should have thought about this when she tried to destroy him during the primaries and now you think that he wants that kind destruction in his cabinet, where she challenges all of his decision...I Think NOT.. Move on...And if you not going to vote for him because he didn't select, then you are one of those folks that were going to be part of the "Back Door" activists still seeking to destroy him..Like you're doing now.
I think once these Clinton supporters get reminded of McCain's 'HillaryCare' comment and the 'Janet Reno is Chelsea Clinton's father' joke, you're going to see these supporters come home.

People will eventually do what's in the best interest.

Hillary and Bill have to hit McCain and hit McCain hard. Simply endorsing Obama won't be enough, they have to come out fighting.

Biden leads with a right cross to jaw..McWar braces back and Biden delivers an upper cut to the nose..
McWar leans in for the clinch as Biden brings home the round house right to the left of McWars head...
McWar falls into the ropes...and bounces to the mat...Referee..counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and your out!..McWar is OUT...and all cheering and celebration breaks out in the ring....

We are happy voters and we approve this message...

Obama/Biden'08
I was wondering what McCain's experience was as Commander and Chief that he is running on versus limited experience for Obama on the same issue. I don't recall McCain having any experience as Commander and Chief or even any foreign policy experience as a chief executive. I heard a caller refer that very question to some pundits and guests on a CNN talk show and they all seemed to skirt around the question. Just what is McCain's expereicne as a leader of the free world on foreign policy. As far as I know it's 0, correct?
...Sorry to be off point for a second, but I wanted to address the whole situation with the Hillary Clinton supporters... I've had enough of this madness. I've come to realize that these women are just plain ignorant, so it's not hard to see why they align themselves with McCain's nonsense... These are just some bitter feminist, all about the "Women's Movement", blind to fact that McCain doesn't even care about the issues of women. (GOOD LUCK THERE) They are obviously not listening to the issues, nor are they too concerned about the future of their kids.

I look at the polling where 27% of Hillary's supporters say they're going to vote McCain, I laugh, and quickly realize that they are most likely republican FEMINIST'S anyway, who were just crossing party lines in support of a woman... So that number doesn't surprise me at all. They are simply returning to their original party, for true democratic women can't be that stupid!!!

People need to realize that you can't strong arm an election... There's a process, and Hillary Clinton lost fair and square...

Also, I see the idiotic logic that some are putting out, saying that "She got 18 million votes, she should've been on the ticket", what in the world does that have to do with anything??? Yeah, getting her as VP would've sealed the deal for Obama, so it must say something towards his character that he choose rather to focus on taking this Country to where he envisions it as opposed to JUST winning an election... Seriously, think about that for a second... Hillary would have given Obama the Presidency without doubt, but he'll much rather lose an election for the sake of his Country, than to save face by assuring victory at whatever cost. He's obviously got a plan, and Hillary as VP simply did not fit the mode of what he needs out of a VP...

...And let me just say this... As for the Hillary supporters, God forbid Barack lose this election due to your stubborness, Hillary wont stand a chance in 2012... People wont forget this... And let's remember, Obama had more votes... {So that's just a higher percentage of no-show voters come November 2012}

SO IN ESSENCE, THEY'RE ACTUALLY HURTING HILLARY MORE THAN THEY'RE HELPING HER... (Go Figure)

{...And the sooner they realize that the better}

Obama/Biden 2008
...

We can only hope that Exit Polling is conducted in the November Election --- we will see what percentage of Hillary's Whining Supporters actually do vote for McCain.  After all of their whining and crying and protesting --- the overwhelming majority WILL VOTE FOR OBAMA.

Hillary's Supporters are traditional Democrats; the OLD DEMOCRATS.  Processionary caterpillers who follow one another right over a cliff.

OBAMA IS CREATING A NEW DEMOCRTAIC PARTY --- free of the selfish special interest groups who have dominated party politics for far too long.  Goodbye to the whining white women; goodbye to the charlatans like Jackson & Sharpton; goodbye to the far-left loonie extremists.
A NEW DAY HAS ARRIVED.

I love how the obamians are now picking on the delegates of HRC...too funny.  But I guess it's okay now that the flip-flopping lying hypocrite panderer is giving MI and FL what should have been theirs all along.  Of course,  now he needs those votes-  I hope they throw the concention wide open by HRC not releasing her delegates and the MI anf FL coming in solidly behind her- THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!  1932!!

Pajama:

While I may not disagree that Obama needs to provide specific plans that he has for this country and the people of the country I am not sure that is the correct strategy at this time. The majority of voters cast their votes based on emotion and not on any kind of study of the specific positions of the candidates have. Everyone keeps saying Obama needs to be more specific when he has been specific about his proposals over the last year. Not only in speeches but on his web-site. McCain gives no specific proposals and no one is telling McCain he needs to be more specific. No, I think Obama needs to appeal to people's emotions and that requires taking on John McCain with issues like Mccain's numerous houses and Mcacain being out of touch wit hthe people especially in regards to doemstic and economic issues. Obama could spend the next 90 days being very specific about all his proposals and at the end of the time if he loses the eletion people would say Obama was not specific enough. This election will be won by way of emotional appeal. You don't earn that emotional appeal by boring everyone with specifics. You win it by hammering your opponent and inciting people once again about Hope and Change as Obama did in the primaries.
The less I have to listen to Tom Brokaw reporting, the better

Just watched Meet The Press with Brokaw, Caroline Kennedy, and Speaker of The House, Nancy Pelosi.

He tried to 'go there', (sort of), with Caroline, but she handled herself with ease. He knew to stay in his place with an Alpha American Family member.

Pelosi was a different matter. He had an agenda. He went after her with his carping guns loaded. He never came up for air, but he also never scored a point. It is clear to see how she rose to be 3rd in line to the Presidency. She is soft spoken, beautiful, classy. She knows her stuff, and is no shrinking violet.

Give Dan Abrams Meet The Press, MSNBC. He is a lawyer, in the tradition of Mr. Russert. I have found him opinionated, but largely non-partisan. I think he could control himself, and conduct his interviews in an unbiased way.

Brokaw is a partisan piece of work. Timmy would not be pleased.

C A, Tuscaloosa, AL Now that the GREAT Tim Russert has passed away, you don't really believe there will be any accurate reporting do you? The media will never answer questions that the people want answered. The only answers you will get are ALL twisted with the reporters opinions/feelings put onto it, so the truth will be lost. I miss MR. Tim Russert, he was the only media person who could be trusted to give us the truth. He is NOT happy with what is going on with the media and this election. How sad noone could not at least do honest reporting in his name/memory. You are so missed Mr. Russert, RIP.
Can the local cellular system near the stadium really support 76,000 people texting more or less simultaneously?
HEY HILLARY!   YOU LOST!   get a life and get on board!

Yes but he did stay in  Holiday inn last night.
It is sad to admit that american voters respond best and are swayed by negative ads full of lies and character assasination.

Indeed our biggest blunder in 2004 was to take the high road of not attacking President Bush and his gang.  I knew it then, expected it during the mid-terms in 2006 and was dismayed last month as the republicans (who know nothing about taking the high road) continually bashed Obama and were successful in turning the Obama trip to Europe which was a resounding success into a negative! As a result the Obama lead in the polls evaporated and it is now a tie!  I began to see 2004 revisited!

However as a supporter of Obama and as a disgusted american I decided soon after the 2004 and more recently the 2006 mid-term elections that I would have no mercy on any republican and would hold then accountable and make them go beyond the Limbaugh and Rove soundbites!  I drew the line in the sand and NEVER compromised! I am only one voter but I HAVE influence within my scope of influence.

I am encouraged to see that the party has finally matured and is willing to FIGHT!  Hold republicans accountable and expose THEM as the elitist's!  Expose them for their concerted attack on our civil liberties! Remind the country of the scoundrels that moved into the White House and government. Play back for America the attacks on McCain by his own party in 2000!  Have no mercy on rebublicans and McCane.  Have no mercy on Lieberman!  Continue to remind the nation of how many republican senators will not attend their own convention!

Senator Biden (the next VP) started the offensive Saturday in Springfield and with our individual support, within our circle of influence, we will carry it on to the White House!

Obama-Biden ... yes we will!
Be sure to read the Frank Rich article entitled "Last Call For Change We Can Believe In."

McCain is just a big lier, you can't trust the man. Has anyone seen the video Madonna had on McCain? He say's it is negative talk on him? is he whining? He does not like it when the joke and negative ads are on him, but his campaign  loves to dish it out. McCain you have yourself to blame on how people of the world see you. If you had done things different you would not be whining! Obama/Biden 08
Eventually , perhaps this week, the backlash against the Clinton camp will begin. Some of Hillary's supporter's were upset by her blase performance in Florida last week. At some point Democrat's will say enough is enough , give the guy a break. Something to watch for this week .

Curious about why people still need to know what Obama would do as president?  1) get us out of Iraq, 2) work on health care, energy policy, creating jobs, improving education system...  The details of how are not something you get in a speech - it is available on his web site and in pamphlets (pamphlets are typically how these details are communicated - if at all... Obama's are more detailed than any other candidate - independent assessment by AP from a few weeks ago).  Can he do it?  He has had the most disciplined, most effective campaign of the season (better than supposedly experienced Hillary, much better than imploded twice so far McCain).  Does he share our values?  His values are all there on the web sites as well.  There've been 3 or 4 documentaries on all the candidates by everyone from A&E Biography to Fox News -- including a very good pair by MSNBC.  What are people asking for?
Go Michelle. We love you. What  an incredibly poised, charming, witty, intelligent, and strong family woman.
I look forward to seeing this family on inauguration day.
Obama/Biden 2008
Wake up, Dems! There's no playing nice with fascists.  Kick the repugs where it hurts: early, often, and hard.

Jimmy Carter: You rock, dude!  The last president of either party with the guts to treat Americans like intelligent adults was you.

Obama/Biden - All the way?  You bet!!
I just love NYTimes/CBS polls. One makes up stories about McCain, the other about Bush. Both get scooped by the National Enquier. Then they expect their polls to be taken seriously.
Tonight, is the night that wifey is suspose to be BOOED off stage !
Whatever happened to political courtesy? Didn't both parties always layoff attacks during the opponent's convention? Let each side have their opportunity to make their case as a courtesy to the voters and then return to the fray after politely allowing your opponent to speak for the convention duration?

It seems like all respect for the electoral process in a democracy has been lost. It's win at all costs, to hell with the voters.

Why do I have the feeling that this all started with Nixon and his team of "ratf**kers" as his dirty tricks team was called.

Yet another thing for the GOP to be proud of.

So what this poll says is no different than what we knew three months ago.
25-30% of Hillary's supporters are not enthusiastic about Obama, and may or may not vote for him. (I say, most likely not.)
5% say they don't support him.
Gee, unless I my math is wrong that means at least 35% of Democrats polled say they are not happy with our party's nominee.
It's funny how the media, and this website in particular, try to spin the news and poll results in favor of Obama every chance you get.
Report the facts, tell the truth.....almost HALF of The Democratic Party is reticent about Obama, and this will cost us the election in November.
And let me just say this... As for the Hillary supporters, God forbid Barack lose this election due to your stubborness, Hillary wont stand a chance in 2012... People wont forget this... And let's remember, Obama had more votes... {So that's just a higher percentage of no-show voters come November 2012}

You maybe right in that  our non support of obama may hurt Hillary in the long run. Because we realize that people like you will make it Hillarys fault because we don't like obama. So therefore, I think 9 million of us should just not vote. How does that sound to ya !

It's not Hillary fault we don't like or trust obama. Oh and we can change our names to New Independents !
I think Michelle Obama is pregnant...either that or her choice of dresses for the Biden coming out was awful....we'll see.

america, the whole world is watching us, how can we be call on to help bring peace to other nations, when we have so much bitterness among ourselves. Can you imagine what they are thinking?
I predict that all this McCain attacking of NBC and MSNBC will end up with the desired effect of having the defensive albeit good intentioned Ton Brokaw, bending over backwards to please the McCain campaign and image of "maverick" while trying to tear down the Obama intelligence effect. Just watch!
I hope HRC's delegates ignore her.  If that doesn't work, I hope they nominate her for VEEP.  I'd keep coming back at 'em.  Folks need to send a msg that Obama and the DNC stole this election from her.  If you don't think that, had MI and FL been counted at the time of their votes, Hillary would have won.  Instead they rigged this crap.  And, oh, how Obama was SO against their votes counting since they broke the rules. Now, all of a sudden, the sleazy little creep needs their votes and they will try to "buy" them back by reinstating their full delegate count.  Screw Obama and screw the DNC.
Jill Johnson said it best "                                       " that is what is really going on NOTHING

New Independent ! (Sent Monday, August 25, 2008 11:34 AM)

No, New Independent, you have to vote McCain to send the most powerful message to Obama and the DNC we know they played dirty and rigged this for Obama. and to Obama we need to say that some of us aren't swayed with bright lights, blaring music and a "say nothing" speech.
Hillary Clinton is smart.  She called out Obama's lack of SUBSTANCE and paid the price for it.
That said, I am still waiting for SUBSTANCE from Obama than speeches.  I want to see details if his economic policies.  I want to know where he is going to create 5 million jobs.  How is he going to "work on the environment"
SUBSTANCE...Obama has none unfortunately.
OBAMA was supposed to run a "positive campaign"  this was supposed to be a big selling point for his campaign.
3AM text messages are stupid and VINDICTIVE to the Hillary supporters out there that OBAMA NEEDS TO WIN!
VINDICTIVE is that all of the CLINTON STATES ARE NOT ON THE FLOOR.  Only Obama states in DE are on the floor (excepting FL and MI which OBAMA NEEDS TO WIN)

Sorry to break it to you folks, OBAMA IS THE SAME OLD POLITICIAN as the rest of them.  Great public speaker ,NO SUBSTANCE
Bunny, Winston-Salem: Yes, I was appalled, too, and even more taken aback by the wrinkle in Biden's shirt and Obama's lack of a tie clip. God Almighty in Heaven, what is Democratic Political Fashion coming to? Duh.
