First thoughts: Kicking off the conventions

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
DENVER -- We're about to start an historical two-week convention bonanza -- it’s sort of the opening ceremonies of the political Olympics, as we called it last week. Both parties have never attempted to hold their conventions so late. They've gone back-to-back before, but never this late in the process. When McCain gives his acceptance speech in St. Paul, Obama and McCain will have fewer than 60 days to win over voters. While modern conventions have become known for their lack of news, these two could be noteworthy because of 1) the historical nature of Obama's candidacy; 2) the fact that the Clintons will be playing second fiddle (and treated that way) for the first time since '88, causing the potential for drama this week; 3) the very real threat McCain could name a pro-choice running mate, causing Republican delegates to attempt an actual floor flight in St. Paul; and 4) the uncomfortable nature of the GOP convo dealing with an unpopular president; not since '68 and has there been a party so worried about the negative impact of an outgoing president. Ready. Set. Go.

*** Obama’s three challenges: The candidate has to do three things with this convention, which arguably might be one too many items on his agenda. One, he needs to fill in the gaps of his biography for the largest audience of voters who haven't yet tuned into the race. Two, he needs to take on McCain more forcefully; there's no doubt the Republicans will use their St. Paul airtime to go after Obama -- big time. Obama chief strategist David Axelrod has made it clear he thought Kerry made a mistake four years ago by ignoring Bush. And three, Obama needs to unify the party. All three agenda items are doable by themselves, but can all three be done in a four-day period? It's a big challenge.

*** What PUMA-on-the-Street interviews might not tell you: Speaking of that last challenge… With so many of Hillary Clinton’s most ardent supporters in Denver, is the political press corps here in danger of over-hyping Obama’s problem with Hillary backers? Yes, our most recent NBC/WSJ poll showed that Obama has yet to win some of them over, and that (in part) explains why he hasn’t pulled away from McCain. But a brand-new Washington Post/ABC poll also had Obama getting more Clinton support than he’s ever received since she dropped out of the race back in June. No doubt Obama still has some work to do, and he has two-plus months -- including this convention -- to make the sale. But the point we’re trying to make is that perhaps the Dem Party is more unified than PUMA-on-the-street interviews might suggest. Indeed, today’s New York Times/CBS poll of Dem convention delegates probably has it right: 60% of Hillary’s delegates enthusiastically support Obama, 31% support him with reservations or because he’s the nominee, and 5% don’t support him at all. But the Clinton folks will have an impact on the media narrative this week. In fact, they already they have -- see Ed Rendell at the media confab yesterday and today's Politico piece by Harris and Allen.

*** What to watch for tonight: Things could start off with a bang. Tonight’s primetime speaker is Michelle Obama, who will be tasked to sell her husband to the public. She was one of Obama’s best surrogates during the Dem primaries, but Republicans and even some Democrats believe she won’t sell with swing voters. So definitely pay attention to her remarks. Also on tap for tonight is a video tribute to Ted Kennedy, but NBC’s Ann Curry reported on TODAY that Kennedy is in Denver and might make an appearance at the convention. That could be a nice moment for the Democrats that has nothing to do with Obama or Clinton. Two other speakers to watch tonight: former GOP Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa and Sen. Claire McCaskill, who might have been the single-best surrogate Obama had during the primaries. By the way, where are the Olympians? Didn't the Dems find any Gold medalist to trot out?

*** What if Obama loses? In the latest issue of Newsweek, Slate editor Jacob Weisberg raises a provocative point that’s likely to drive the conservative blogosphere bonkers: An Obama loss -- especially in this anti-GOP climate -- will reflect poorly on America, so he believes. “If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth,” he writes. “His defeat would say that when handed a perfect opportunity to put the worst part of our history behind us, we chose not to. In this event, the world's judgment will be severe and inescapable: the United States had its day, but in the end couldn't put its own self-interest ahead of its crazy irrationality over race.” We know this reflects what many in the opinion corps of the left are thinking, but it’s the exact WRONG message Democrats should send in campaigning for Obama. In fact, it's this line of thinking that has the McCain campaign believing the press is against them -- and that has rallied the establishment conservatives around McCain, even as they are holding their noses about the GOP nominee. To put it simply, people don’t want to be told that casting a vote for the other guy makes us bad. This is how Democrats blow elections, when they talk down to voters, and if the McCain campaign can tap into any resentment that builds over being told that history somehow demands the country elect Obama, we in the press will discover a new silent majority. Of course, McCain doesn't want to win this way, because if he only wins based on backlash, then he may have trouble governing.

*** Today’s convention schedule: Monday’s convention theme is “One Nation,” and it will include stories about Obama’s life. Some of the more notable speakers: Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former President Jimmy Carter (via video), Obama sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., former GOP Rep. Jim Leach, and Sen. Claire McCaskill. The primetime speaker in the 11:00 pm ET hour is Michelle Obama. Barack Obama himself will make a video appearance from Kansas City that’s tied to his wife’s speech.

*** The RNC’s response: Carly Fiorina, former Democratic Rep. Tim Penny, and former Wisconsin Hillary Clinton delegate Debra Bartoshevich hold a press conference at the RNC’s Denver headquarters to highlight McCain’s support among Democrats and independents. The presser takes place at noon ET. Bartoshevich, in fact, is featured in a brand-new McCain TV ad. See below for more on that.

*** Also in Denver: The Democratic state delegations hold their meetings beginning at 9:00 am ET… The Obama camp and the Dem convention hold a press briefing at the Colorado Convention Center at 11:15 am ET… The Democratic Governors Association has a media roundtable at the Colorado Convention Center at 1:00 pm ET… And Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar, and others hold a briefing at 4:00 pm ET on the West and what they consider McCain’s vulnerabilities in the region.

*** On the trail: McCain begins his day with a press conference in Phoenix, then heads to a fundraiser in Sacramento, and finally travels to Los Angeles to tape the Tonight Show and raise money. Obama holds a town hall in Davenport, IA.

...is the political press corps here in danger of over-hyping Obama’s problem with Hillary backers?
*******************************************************

Duh.  It wouldn't be a good "news" story if there wasn't 'trouble in Democrat-land'.  The party will unify -- much to the McCain campaign's chagrin -- and Clinton supporters will rally around their nominee, and hopefully help to get him elected.

However, the MSM will continue to push the PUMA story, because it will continue to sell newspapers and advertising airtime.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Is Juliani/Romney really gonna be stalking the Democratic Convention for the next couple of days? Really? Is this what it has to come down to? Do the two of them really have anything else better to do with their time? Come on now guys lets be more productive, like campaigning for McCain, instead of being his "yes" men.

The attention is off of McCain for the week so the republico-nuts will do anything to get some. This is a SAD group of individuals.
As a Hillary supporter turned Obama supporter, I must say that but for the MSM hyping all this PUMA nonsense, I doubt it would have an effect on the race.  Even Hillary hasn't embraced those nut jobs!  But, she must deal with them directly...she must literally look them all in the face and say support Obama and not McCain, because Obama will advance their interests, while McCain will destroy them, as he has attempted to do in the past by voting down equal pay for equal work and promising to do what he can to ban abortion under any circumstance in this country.
I wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now.  What an exciting time, this should be an great and eventful week.
What's historilcal about having an convention? We've had more then 50 of them.
"With so many of Hillary Clinton’s most ardent supporters in Denver, is the political press corps here in danger of over-hyping Obama’s problem with Hillary backers?"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You mean like you over-hyped Obama's "women problem," or his "Latino problem"? Noooo, the media never over-hypes anything...
I agree that an Obama loss would speak volumes about the Democrat's viability in the future. If not now, when?" The economy is in the tank and people are sick and tired of war. Also, our allies will be tremendously disappointed and the election of McSame will send them the message that we are perfectly fine with Bush policies.
You are RIGHT about the over-hyping of the Clinton drama and the media. In between our weekend chores and gardening and farmer's market, we tried to check in on the coverage off and on, and ALL WEEKEND, ALL NEWS, including MSNBC and the others kept talking over and over about the CLINTON DRAMA machine.  Yet even when Chris Matthews took out 3 seconds to ask bystanders during his show, overwhelmingly they are in support of  Obama.  There was one in twenty who supported HRC and 3 or 4 who supported McCain.  Yet the story is THE CLINTONS.  We're sick of it already, and the Clintons for not soing more to stop it.  We're watching because we're Dems who want to enjoy our convention, and this is all the media wants to talk about.  Great way to annoy and frustrate your viewers, and tell a story that isn't there.
"Todays Convention theme - One Nation".

Has John Edwards been informed of this development?
John McCain's presidential platform:

An Obama loss -- especially in this anti-GOP climate -- will reflect poorly on America, so he believes. “If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth,”

This is what many on here have been saying for months. If you don’t like him your a raciest. and not even knowing how many independents you drive away with that thinking.
"Of course, McCain doesn't want to win this way, because if he only wins based on backlash, then he may have trouble governing."

This is where you and the rest of the press don't get it. McCain will do ANYTHING to get elected - and really could care less about governing. He has proved that over and over since he started sucking up to Bush and the "anti" part of the party in 2004. The supposed (not sure if that was even real now) John McCain of 2000 would not vote for the John McCain of 2008. And I gave him money and voted for him in the primary in 2000.
I'm going to be watching coverage from another network because I know that the MSM will do what it can to ruin this historic event for Obama by focusing on anything negative they can find--be it disgruntled Hillary supporters, McCain's negative ads, gaffes, etc. McCain has NO reason to feel the MSM (his base) is biased against him; quite the contrary.

Instead, I choose to focus on the astonishing commitment of Edward Kennedy to his candidate of choice. I choose to focus on the historic fact of Obama's candidacy. I choose to focus on the strength of Hillary Clinton in putting aside her loss to endorse her rival in a resounding way. I choose to celebrate, not denigrate.
An Obama loss -- especially in this anti-GOP climate -- will reflect poorly on America, so he believes. “If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth,”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You poor, poor liberals. You still don't get it, do you? Equal opportunity does not guarantee equal results.
The Democratic party division is a myth. Of course, there are still a few upset Clinton suppoters, but the majority of Dems are ready to fight for the ultimate goal of changing the climate of this country and making a change in the administration. The Newsweek article is spot on, but the convention is not the time to focus on that. The convention needs to focus on the history of this campaign and the future of the country
What if Obama loses? I have always felt that the problem is and has never been with Obama. He has run an almost flawless campaign and has gotten pummeled in the media for it. He has been called "exotic" "strange" "not one of us" and nobody is willing to talk about the huge influence that race has on this election.
I have become a bit discouraged in the past few days, not because of anything that Sen. Obama has done or hasn't done. He has performed brilliantly; but I don't have faith that America is truly ready to elect a black man as POTUS. If he is not elected, it will have torn off the scab on our congenital birth defect called slavery and the world will again shake its head in disgust.
It's time for a change, but it seems that America will never be ready.
What is it with these Hillary Fans!!!.. No one owes her anything... she human like the rest of us..She’s no God!!! She lost..he had no obligation to select her...she should have thought about this when she tried to destroy him during the primaries and now you think that he wants that kind destruction in his cabinet, where she challenges all of his decision...I Think NOT.. Move on...And if you not going to vote for him because he didn't select, then you are one of those folks that were going to be part of the "Back Door" activists still seeking to destroy him..Like you're doing now.
>> His defeat would say that when handed a perfect opportunity to put the worst part of our history behind us, we chose not to. <<
The job of being President is not an Affirmative Action position.
McCain is a fraud!
People, let's pick the smart one, for a refreshing change!  Most Americans had excellent economical contentment during the Clinton years - Can you say that now?
I'm not thrilled with Clinton's escapades; but as a country, we were fiscally better off.  That is worth something to me.
If human beings were perfect - we wouldn't need G-d, right?
The process of running for President is embarassing for our country.  While many complain that there are "plenty" of qualified candidates, Who the heck would want to run when you are exposed to scrutiny that is at best petty and at worst - gossipy?  Vetting is one thing; but the way this process has evolved has set our country on a backward path.
And when Obama wins, they(the Republicans) and all of the "mean spirited" divisive folk will call it affirmative action! It's not about his race people! It's about unity and what he has to offer this sin,sick country!
I'm sick of hearing about the Clinton's! It's NOT their party! Obama won, get over it. If you don't than vote for 4 more years of Bush, and expect a draft because McCain the "war hero" has itchy trigger finger! PS Being a solider doesn't make you a leader, thanks for your service though!
Yes the Slate editor is correct that if Barack Obama loses then America loses the most.  It will be proof positive that the bigots and morons still are in a majority here.  Yep the New Age of Intolerance, as pushed by the evangelical christian lunatic fringe for the past 30 years, has to be stopped here and now.  The whole world is watching and we'd better be able to show the world that here in America we really do practice the liberal democratic ideals that our country was founded upon.  If not the rest of the world will write us off as the guiding light of democracy.
I've been very impressed with Hillary's efforts after the primaries to be a good team player and support Barack Obama.  She has shown that she has class and now some of that class has got to rub off on Bill and those of her supporters who purport to want to vote for "Warmonger" McCain, the true enemy of middle class America.
Only Obama/Biden will protect and support the middle and poor classes of this country.  Don't be a fool and a tool of the rich and greedy, do not vote for our real enemy - "Bush Hugger" McCain and his repugnant one's party.
Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Why is it that CNN reported last night that a poll they just conducted has a dead even race 47% - 47%, when another poll taken yesterday has Obama up by 6%, Obama 49% - McCain 43%?
These polls are all over the place.
Re: The polls are suggesting 20% - 30% Hillary supporters staying home or voting for McCain. If it remains this way as an Independent, and although supporting Obama, another part of me hopes McCain wins and these idiots get McCain and the Republicans for the next 4 years. What a bunch of whining hypocrits calling themselves democrats. On the other hand I guess if the glove fits.....Dems do tend to whine quite a bit.
“If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth,”...“His defeat would say that when handed a perfect opportunity to put the worst part of our history behind us, we chose not to."
I thought choosing a President was the perfect opportunity to put the best person qualified in the White House!
I am getting sick and tired of hearing that the ONLY reason people won't vote for Obama is because he is (1/2) black!  And -- Obama himself encourages this way of thinking.
This is still America -- I will choose who I vote for -- not anyone else.  And I won't feel guilty for voting for someone based on MY criteria...whether they be a he or she, black, white, brown, yellow or green.
One thing is for sure, we will look back on the present time as the worst part of "Journalistic" history.
[To put it simply, people don’t want to be told that casting a vote for the other guy makes us bad. ]
I'm a staunch Democrat and card carrying Union member, I'm voting for McCain, and I don't feel bad about it. My politics fit much more closely with McCain then Obama, and I'm proud to cast my vote for McCain.
John McCain would be a mediocre president.
Like George Bush, McCain got his first career breaks from the connections and money of his family, not hard work.
The son and grandson of Navy admirals, he attended Annapolis where he did poorly (graduating 894 out of 899). Nevertheless, he was commissioned as a pilot, where he performed poorly, crashing three planes before he failed to evade a North Vietnamese missile that destroyed his plane. McCain spent more than five years in a prison camp where he gave away important information concerning the whereabouts of his "brothers" in arms.
After his release, McCain knew his weak military record meant he'd never make admiral, so he turned to politics. With the help of his new wife's wealth, his new father-in-law's business connections and some powerful friends he had made as a lobbyist for the Navy, he was elected in 1982 to a Congress in a district that he didn't reside in until the day the seat opened up. A few years later he succeeded Barry Goldwater as a senator.
McCain hasn't accomplished much in the Senate either. Even his own campaign doesn't trumpet his successes. His campaign finacne law failed to significantly reduce the role of money in politics. He failed to get a big tobacco bill through the Senate. He's failed to change the way Congress spends money; his bill to give the president a line-item veto was declared unconstitutional, and the system of pork and earmarks continues unabated. He failed to reform the immigration system.
Every Senator misses votes in Washgington from time to time, but between the beginning of 2005 and mid-2007, no senator has missed more roll-cll votes than John McCain, except Tim Johnson, who was recovering from a near-fatal brain aneurysm. He even failed to show up for a vote on Social Security. Even Ted Kennedy, who has a brain tumor, showed up for that vote. McCain hasn't voted on any issue in the Senate since April 8, 2008.
McCain, himself, says he doesn't know the economy. He's demonstrated that he doesn't understand the workings of Social Security, or the political history of the Middle East. He doesn't know who our enemies are. He says he wants to reduce global warming, but then proposes ideas that would stimulate - - not reduce - - demand for fossil fuels.
John McCain is still fighting the Vietname War. But he's not fighting the real historic war, which taught us the mistake of injecting ourselves into a civil war that was none of our business. Instead, McCain is fighting an imaginary war, where sure victory could have been achieved with just a "little more" bombing, just a little more "pacification", just a little more will to win at home. This fantasy clouds McCain's judgement on foreign policy.
John McCain's major accomplishments, both in the Senate and in View Nam has been merely to survive. Just surviving doesn't make you a hero...or a decent president. America needs to do more than survive the next four years.
If you would do your homework you would see that the John McCain of 2000 is NOT the John McCain of today and realize that we cannot afford to put him in the White House in November. American cannot afford another mistake. Obama/Biden '08
The Clinton's picked the right delegatesfor themselves.  They are selfish and unrealistic as the Clintons.  They care more about themselves than the issues.  They believe that even though they lost they shoudl be winners. (Like we teach our kids today that even if you loose you still get the ribbon and what you want.)
Obama's Three Challenges: 1) Fill-in the gaps, yes, that is doable.  Gore is very respected in the Party and he (and others) will fill in those gaps. 2) Hit McCain harder.  Yes, he needs to do that and now with 70 days to go, he will beat on McCain like a drum. Along with a list of other speakers 3) Party unity, that is a bit harder.  A lot of that is up to Hillary, and some of the unrest, even Hillary can't calm.  All along I have been an Obama supporter and if Hillary would have won, I would have been greatly disappointed.  It would be hard to take back all those anti-Hillary comments.  But in the end, would my disappointment be so great that my vote(s) would allow an old man with dementia to run the country. That would be a lot of disappointment!
GREAT New ad by Obama slamming McCain on economy, check it out!
Terrie from KY -- you are exactly right -- that is why P.O.W. status is not justification for an election.  Affirmative action indeed!
Now is the time for all Hillary supporters to rally behind this ticket. The stakes are too high and it comes down to the Supreme Court. There will be 2 or 3 openings on the court in the next four years and they will not be Roberts or Alito or Scalia- they will likeky be Stevens and Ginsburg.Unless the Democrats win the Court will be dominated by the far right for decades. I say that Hillary should have a prominent place- Senate majority leader when all is said and done. Imagine 2 women leading Congress, Obama and Biden heading the Executive branch and a balanced Supreme Court. Too good to be true?
OSNBC.....LMAO.....nice try on the obama spin there guys!!  First you say you media types might overhype the HRC supporters non-support of obama and then you say 91% support him. PUH-LEEZ.
I am a life long Democrat solidly against this excuse for a presidential candidate, as are more than half the long-term Democrats I know.  Guess we'll see in November,  but nice try on the spin fellas.
Biden leads with a right cross to jaw..McWar braces back and Biden delivers an upper cut to the nose..
McWar leans in for the clinch as Biden brings home the round house right to the left of McWars head...
McWar falls into the ropes...and bounces to the mat...Referee..counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and your out!..McWar is OUT...and all cheering and celebration breaks out in the ring....
We are happy voters and we approve this message...
So, if you make a cogent point the voter will think you're a latte liberal elitist talkin' down to 'em and pull the GOP lever? Okay. From now on, I'm going to go up to my undecided friends and whisper in their ear, "you know McCain's a closet homosexual."
I think this PUMA thing has gotten way more attention than it should. I think it was born out of a heated moment, a heated moment that is starting to fall by the wayside. The real Hillary supporters are starting to see that McCain is not looking out for their self-interests. All that's left in PUMA now are those Republicans that are trying to whip the disaffected Hillary supporters into a frenzy. This has, albeit slowly, started to fade.
You can tell which ones these 'rabble-rousers' are, they're the ones spouting the Republican talking points.
I think you'll see the last remnants of this die off after this week.
We can only hope that Exit Polling is conducted in the November Election --- we will see what percentage of Hillary's Whining Supporters actually do vote for McCain.  After all of their whining and crying and protesting --- the overwhelming majority WILL VOTE FOR OBAMA.
Hillary's Supporters are traditional Democrats; the OLD DEMOCRATS.  Processionary caterpillers who follow one another right over a cliff.
OBAMA IS CREATING A NEW DEMOCRTAIC PARTY --- free of the selfish special interest groups who have dominated party politics for far too long.  Goodbye to the whining white women; goodbye to the charlatans like Jackson & Sharpton; goodbye to the far-left loonie extremists.
A NEW DAY HAS ARRIVED.
The MSM is not ging to allow us to enjoy neither one of the conventions.  They are going to point out everything they think they can turn into news. No matter who wins or loses they will say they knew it was going to happen and then they will analyze it to death.  The MSM has become a turn off for real and fair reporting. It has become a circus sideshow.
Why is it that CNN reported last night that a poll they just conducted has a dead even race 47% - 47%, when another poll taken yesterday has Obama up by 6%, Obama 49% - McCain 43%?
You say you're an independent, but let me just ask if you would like some cheese to go with YOUR whine.
What makes me an American is that I can, if I choose, as a Democrat, not vote for the candidate of the Democrat Party.
Now we're told Equal Opportunity will be a myth if we don't elect this charlatan.  obama doesn't need to play the race card.  The media does it just fine for him.  What a joke.
"I'm a staunch Democrat and card carrying Union member, I'm voting for McCain, and I don't feel bad about it. My politics fit much more closely with McCain then Obama"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
See this is where are you anti-Obama Faux-Dems are confused. If your politics "fit much more closely with McCain", then you are NOT a Democrat to begin with. McCain's policies are opposite of nearly everything the Democratic party stands for. So no, you cannot be a "staunch Democrat" and agree with him more than you do Obama - by definition that's not even possible.
Thad Cochrane (R-Miss):  '    "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Cochran said about McCain by phone. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."...'
Maybe it was because of McCain's 'scuffle' with a 92 year old Senator
92 year olds are fun to fight with....
They can't fight back
John McCain, American 'Hero' !!
Re the Weisberg thesis, what lazy thinking. The occasion of an Obama loss is not a cause for pessimism about chances, hopes, dreams, race, or what have you.  In poker parlance, Obama's candidacy is drawing to an inside straight. Winning is an unlikely outcome.  US Senators, of any color, who are in the first years of their first term in office and choose to run for president rightfully earn a thumping. To prevail would be a miracle - to lose, absolutely expected.
Corparate America has decided to Bully it's way into the national stage again.We defeated Corparate America in the Primary season.There is an allout onslaught against Barack Obama being elected as POTUS.Just by watching any news channel, you can tell just how scared corparate America is. The talking Point has gone out & they're pushing the inevitable candidate Hillary Clinton ! It's sickening to watch this mess, because America wholly rejected that candidate some month's ago.
Now for anyone with an iota of a brain, these poster's that come on here, whineing about Hillary & all the baggage that she bring's, also saying thier gonna vote for Mccain & show America thier absolute stupidity, Ignore them. Real Hillary supporter's are Strongly behind barack. The other's are the Rush crowd ( Gay Ole Party) still thinking they can somehow sway us into beleiving that Mccain is the answer to America's many problem's.
Van, yall remember van, was a strong Hillary supporter who came on here with reason's to vote for his candidate, not the whineing you see now on here.
My advice to All Barack supporter's, is to Ignore these crazies, as they'll slowly go away. They're Mccain opperatives here to cause Trouble.Not a single one of them has come with a single reason to vote for Mccain. Very telling, if you ask me.
If you'll notice, we now have a Donna on here from 3 different states, who coincidentily speaks about the exact same thing. Folk's she may be named Donna, but that's about as real as she is.
So relax, let the crazies from the Mccain camp have thier little say, America will elect Barack Hussein Obama as the next POTUS. Bet the farm on it!!
Corparate America is Runnibg SCARED !!!
Chuck, thanks for bringing up what if Obama loses; because that has been my contention. We have the best chance to regain what our ancestors strived for. We and our ancestors, whether born here, immigrated here, or were brought here in shackles, it doesn’t matter we can no longer be duped or frightened. Voters should have more common sense NOW than to allow the stupid  cults of the Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Jerome Corsi, Karl Rove, Bush, Cheney, McCain and PUMA’S fear tactics,  of political and racial division;  when it involves are livelihoods e.g. mortgages,  energy, unemployment, healthcare, education, failing infrastructure,  and dumb wars (including possible invasions of Russian and Iran).  We are one in that view. The GOP is a negative factor.
If PUMA has such GREAT POWER why haven't they done more to pay down Hillary's champaign debt.  Just as I thought all mouth and no money.
We pissed off most of Europe. Most Arab countries now have a reason to hate us. Our economy has fallen so low that our once strong middle class can barely afford the cost of living. And best of all, the American people say their proud to be Americans while hating every second of it (people who are "proud" Americans put Canadian flags on their luggage when they go to Europe, now that's good comedy).
McCain's answers respectively: Start another fight in eastern Europe/ western Asia. Follow Osama to the gates of hell (but not Pakistan). Drill the hell out of our own shores so we can see a profit in 10 years but further our economic depression until then. And then re-open the draft to give Americans a swift kick in the right direction (when will the MSM talk about that?).
Do I even need to say why you should vote Obama? Or do you people fall for the 5th grade name calling, blatent lies, and other dirty campaign tactics from the McCain camp? McCain lives to promote a war machine while if Obama came out of the Whitehouse, put his mouth to a microphone and said "we tried all diplomatic solutions and they have not worked, we need to go to war......" I'd believe him.
I love how the obamians are now picking on the delegates of HRC...too funny.  But I guess it's okay now that the flip-flopping lying hypocrite panderer is giving MI and FL what should have been theirs all along.  Of course,  now he needs those votes in Nov.-  I hope they throw the convention wide open by HRC not releasing her delegates and the MI anf FL delegates coming in solidly behind her- THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!!  1932!!
These polls!
I don't know anyone who has been polled. I say AMERICA gets what it deserves if they elect John Mccain. Tell me one instance where he led something !
If he were not a prosoner of war he would have nothing else to run on. I am a Vietnam Vet, and he is a war monger. He has no idea what it is like to fight the ememy face to face. He is a discrace to all the real fighting men and woman !!!!!!!!!!!!
If Obama loses, it will be because he has refused to embrace politics 101. His " new politics" may have helped him win the primaries, but now he is in the big leagues. To win the game, you gotta play the game. I say this as an Obama supporter. This election is to important, we cannot afford four more years. Sen. Obama, first you have to win, then you can impliment change. PS-- The objective-----WIN
Where are the stories pointing out that conservatives aren't happy with McCain?  There's an assumption that conservatives will in the end rally around McSame, but no parallel assumption regarding Obama.  Turn on any conservative talk show, read any conservative columnist, they are NOT happy with McCain as the candidate.  Ask yourself why party unity is a story on the Democratic side but no such story gets told on the Republican side.
