Jon Stewart jokes, then criticizes

Posted: Monday, August 25, 2008 5:31 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
DENVER -- Chatting this morning with about two dozen political reporters here, comedian Jon Stewart cracked plenty of jokes.

On the reporters in the room: "It is very difficult to fake what you do."

On which candidate would be the better source of laughs for the next four to eight years: "Mr. T."

And on which candidate is funnier: "Neither," he answered. "You know who makes me laugh? Chris Rock. But I don't want him as president."

Yet not everything was a joking matter for Stewart, whose Daily Show is here covering the Democratic convention and will report on the GOP one in Minnesota next week.

In his roundtable with reporters, he criticized the way the presidential race has been covered, especially on 24-hour cable news. He said cable had dumbed-down politics, comparing it to gerbils racing on a wheel. He even drew upon the Steinbeck story "Of Mice and Men" to emphasize that point.

"'Hey, Lenny, why don't you be the leader?'"

For example, Stewart said the press has gone overboard asking if Obama is too arrogant (how can we know the answer to that? Stewart replied.) Or whether McCain is too old (McCain isn't Wilford Brimley, he observed).

Stewart even argued that if Franklin Roosevelt were running for president today, he'd be painted as an elitist and news analysts would ask: "Can he bowl?"

So which networks did he consider the worst? "They are all pretty bad," he said before citing FOX News as perhaps the best of the bunch because it knows what it is doing. "They are an appendage of the Republican Party," he added. "Barack Obama could cure cancer, and they would paint it as an economic disaster."

Stewart also talked about the presidential race and candidates. On whether comedians like found it difficult to make fun of Obama: "I think that there will be plenty of jokes to be had."

On joking about McCain's age: "It is already trite." He later said of the Arizona senator, "We are having to introduce him to 20-year-olds who are smoking out of apple bongs."

And on which candidate -- McCain or Obama -- would make the better president: "I think they would both be decent presidents," he said, arguing that both would govern in a "far less imperious" manner that George Bush has.

Jon nailed it.

Again.

Jon nailed it.

Again.

Read it and weep.

John Stewart is walking talking proof of the phrase 'Hire the handicapped because they're funny to watch'.
You see! Even the clowns have this circus added up as a pure gut wrenching failure. The room was loaded, And All the Washington self serving paper hangers thought this was serious help. Damn get a grip Media!
Stewart is wrong on one thing.  McCain would be not be a good president, because he'll be forced to govern like Bush, since he'll be surrounded by the same people who works for Bush.  Sure there won't be Karl Rove, Rommie, Candi, or Powell.  But he'll have others we don't see, but certainly influence Bush.

That's why we can't afford 4 more years of the same!
Geez, if Jon Stewart can be so unbiased and neutral, why can't the rest of the media manage to?  No wonder I respect him but practically nobody else in today's media.  Why did Russert have to die and rest of you get to live?  I guess only the good die young.
Good for John, so much substance has bee left out of this election because idiots think it's better to impune via proxy than actualy do thier job and report or heaven forbid, investigate. Olbermans about the only one who doesn't step on the answers of people he just asked a quetion of. He may have a bias, but at least he does address the truth.
Sure is nice to have a basically unhappy man with a trivial bachelor of arts degree commenting on how the country should be run. And what's even stranger is that someone is even listening to him.
I trust John Stewat more than I trust Obama.

At least John Stewart didn't go to church with a bunch of Racists.

We all saw them cheer. They all agreed with Rev Wright. That's what they are.
OMG!  I was just listening to a lady who called in on CNN (Sorry guys..working my way thru the channels).  She said that she would not vote for Obama because she, as a Clinton supporter, felt that the media was too negative on Hillary and too soft on Obama.  She didn't think Hillary was treated fairly by the media...  Imagine that, we have people voting who will cut off their nose to spike their face!

What in the world are we in for????  I'm scared!
The media never tires of interviewing itsself. Remember that Molly Shannon movie, (since we're talking comdeians), where she passionately kisses the trunk of a tree? Now imagine 'Morning Joe', mic in hand, interviewing an oak! That's about the size of his professionalism.
Stewart: "On the reporters in the room: "It is very difficult to fake what you do."

Ineptness at the level those reporters perform at cannot be faked.
JStewart: "And on which candidate -- McCain or Obama -- would make the better president: "I think they would both be decent presidents," he said, arguing that both would govern in a "far less imperious" manner that George Bush has."

Imperious? Everything Bush has done has had the approval of Congress, even over the last two years when the Democrats ran Congress. Biden and Hillary even voted for the Iraq war, Patriot Act, and all of the wars funding. Imperious? Hardly.
It's sad that two shows on Comedy Central have the most insightful, most unbiased, and smartest views on the race.

Stewart and Colbert, you are truly the masters of cable news.

You own them. They are yours. Do as you will.

Jon Stewart is a genius.  I wish he'd run for president someday.
MANBC ARE YOU LISTENING?

THIS IS THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION, NOT A TIME TO CONTINUE YOUR NEGATIVE ATTACKS ON THE DEMS AND OBAMA

NOT A TIME TO INVITE REPUBLICANS WHO HAVE ALREADY TOLD THE MEDIA AND THE VOTERS THEY INTEND TO CRASH THE DEMS CONVENTION

TALK ABOUT ABOUT A BUNCH OF CHILDREN, THAT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT REPUBLICANS ARE LIKE HIGH SCHOOLERS

GULIANI AND MITT ARE CRASHING ON TUES AND WED.  THAT PROVES THAT THESE GUYS AND THEIR PARTY ARE RUNNING SCARED.

THE REPUBLICANS CAN'T LET THE DEM HAVE THEIR CONVENTION IN PEACE, RATHER THEY DECEND ON THEM LIKE CHILDREN AND THE MEDIA GOES RIGHT ALONG.

IT'S THE DEMS PARTY/CONVENTION MSNBC/CNN WE DON'E EXPECT FOX TO GET IT THEY ARE NOT CAPABLE!

MSNBC DON'T ENGAGE THE CHILDREN/REPUBLICANS A BUNCH OF GROWN MEN STILL PLAYING IN A SAND BOX;  REPUBLICANS:

"WE ARE AFRAID WE MUST SAY ANYTHING AND DO ANYTHING TO STOP THE DEMS, WE DON'T CARE THAT WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO DIGNITY OR PROFESSIONALISM"
I think Stewart should do the Hardball crowd lines.  He would have made mincemeat out of that woman with the "report" about Obama's schooling in Indonesia.
So which networks did he consider the worst? "They are all pretty bad," he said before citing FOX News as perhaps the best of the bunch because it knows what it is doing. "They are an appendage of the Republican Party," he added. "Barack Obama could cure cancer, and they would paint it as an economic disaster."

~~~~~~~~~~~
What an arrogant piece of trash this little man is. Looks like he's shooting for a guest host spot for Olbermann. If Fox is to the Republican party, then what is NBC?
Also, the big surprise is not if Barack Obama would cure cancer, but if he would do anything at all.
Barack has obviously said that either Hillary says the right things at the convention, or else he doesn't pay off her debt.
I always thought of Hillary as being a liberated woman. Guess not. Here's yet another man pulling her strings.
****
That is the most truly pathetic, sexist, blind piece of tripe I have read all month.  Are you suggesting that Hillary can't think for herself because she is a woman?  Or you trying to say that poor Hillary is broken and beaten and has to be corralled?
For someone that claims to support her, you have very little respect for the woman.  All of you whiny PUMA's are just clinging to bitterness...ready to toss the baby out with the bathwater because it wasnt "The Year of the Woman".  Get over it already.  As you heroine stated, if you supported her you should support him.
She is arrogant and an egomanianc, but the lady isnt stupid.  She knows if she is to have any chance in the future its best to unite the party.
And as a supporter of hers, you insult her with you comments and bitterness.
I wish Jon Stewart has a "Mystery Science Theater 3000" prgram that they would overlay on the cable news networks, just so John Q. Public could consciously see just how ridiculous the cable news programs are.  I think these programs, for the most part, have made  people forget what journalism (and not punditry) is.
Thank you Jon
All the media cares about is ratings.  They could care less that they have a responsibility to bring excellent journalism that is fair and balanced.
How unfortunate.
The media would rather keep bringing us Negative Attacks and Stirring up Trouble within parties than spend time giving us Accurate Information
The media does not care that We the People are having problems Paying the Bills, Buying Gas, Getting insurance, Buying Groceries, loosing our HOMES as long as they make theri money.
Media don't you care that this is the Real Deal Selection of a President?
Media do you Care that Your Lack of Reporting the Facts could cause this NATION TO GO UNDER?
MEDIA DO YOU CARE THAT IF THE WRONG PRESIDENT IS CHOSEN AND OUR NATION FAILS BECAUSE YOU REFUSED TO GIVE AMERICANS SOLID INFORMATION ON WHICH TO ASSIST WITH MAKING DECISION YOU WILL HAVE PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SENDING THE COUNTRY IN A BLACK HOLE
MEDIA WE NEED JOURNALISM, NOT OPINIONS, YOU AND YOUR STAFFS ARE NO MORE EXPERTS THAN WE ARE.  THE FACTS JUST THE FACTS
Chuck Todd, while listening to your interaction this afternoon with Chris Matthews, I was grateful that for the first time during the last 6 months you spoke truth to a fact.  Senator Clinton did her supporters a disservice because she gave them false hope that she could overtake Senator Obama once he gained the lead in the delegate count.  It is true that even if she had won the remaining primaries, she would have continued to lag him in delegate count.  She lead all of them to believe that she could win when she knew that the climb was too steep.  Now, those same people somehow have it in their hearts that Obama did not get the nomination fair and square, when in actuality, Obama played the game by out polling Senator Clinton on her flank.  Senator Clinton believed she would win the nomination on Feb 5, 2008 and because of that she didn't plan for being behind.  So while she and her supporters may blame Obama, it was all of those smart people she put around her that lost the nomination for her.  As an African American, I hope Obama will win the election.  But as for Hillary, if she doesn't go all out for him, she will never become President because people like me won't pulled the lever for her.
Go Jon GO!!!!
I love the Daily Show. He is so right and I agree that Fox does know what it is doing. Not that I agree with what they are doing and that there really is not a liberal media anymore. They are all own by corporations who take the real press and make it in to what they want it to be and a lot of the times they misrepresent or go on the attack for the ratings and not to report the true story. OK so yes it is more interesting but honesty is a much better tool.
The authoritarian dictatorship shall end and hopefully justice will be served. Either candidate is not Bush and that is a good thing but one is sure acting like him.
Obama/Biden '08/'12
Jon Stewart I whole heatedly disagrees when you say "I think they would both be decent presidents," he said, arguing that both would govern in a "far less imperious" manner that George Bush has.
McCain would be much worse because a continuation of George Bush would be an equivalency to a war zone and a poverty stricken nation.
Cheney is heading abroad on Sept. 2 for stops in three former Soviet Republics — Azerbaijan, Georgia and Ukraine — plus Italy. Nobody but Obama
Obama/Biden 08/12
Why is this POSTED!?!
It's a real bummer to a liberal when their words are used, in context, against them.
Its a real bummer to a conservative to be unable to look forward.
Anymore pearls of wisdom or are you a one trick pony?
I can hardly wait until John makes jokes about that woman representing "Just Say No Deal" with whom Chris Matthews just conversed. She's not voting for him because, as a kid, he was registered as a Muslim. Now we know how these people really feel.
Apparently defining his faith is even more effective than calling attention to his skin color.
Just how many brain dead people are speaking tonight? I guess these are Democrats, so it will be all of them.
All of the Above (Sent Monday, August 25, 2008 4:16 PM)
*************
Takes one to know one
You just had to throw that last line in there. WTF is going on?  Have you all been paid off?  REPORT THE NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stewart would obviously prefer McBush. His wife alone would keep Stewart in face-lift jokes for decades.(i.e.What's tighter, Mrs. McCains face or Lynn Cheney?)
Stewart has shot himself in the foot with his praise for fox news.  Maybe he's one of the good old boys and gets that racist mentality that goes on at fox news.  You have to question his judgement now that we find out he's in bed with hannity.
He cracks me up.
Come on.  Didn't anybody notice that the Bush terrorcrats lobotomized John McCain and attached strings to him around 2003?  Carl Rove writes his script.
Can't disagree wiht Stewart...
The PRESS IS LAME !!
WHY THE HELL AREN'T YOU (FR) DEALING WITH THE ISSUES ?
Why not compare and contrasts the two candidates policies ?
Why is your reporting so superficial ?
And on which candidate -- McCain or Obama -- would make the better president: "I think they would both be decent presidents," he said, arguing that both would govern in a "far less imperious" manner that George Bush has.
What a wus!
It would be nice if you could keep spell-check errors out of the closing paragraph.
This is why I watch Stewart, thank god someone finally told you guys that you have been acting stupid and petty.  If this is supposed to be the most important election in 40 years you guys have made it a soap opera.  Geez, I just wish someone on t.v. that considers themselves a reporter would act like one, instead you act like your on Days of Our Lives, or Montel Williams, tell me how you feel?, where did you get that dress?, it has been ridiculous to say the least and CNN is so caught up in itself it's begining to look narcisistic, and you guys sound like tabloid reporters.  Someone please act like an adult and it should be embarassing that it always takes a comedian to make since.
Go Obama and Biden
Amen to the cable coverage comments!!!
Writers must not be on strike, else Stewart would never been have been able to come up with this on his own. The man is a puppet.
LOLOLOLOL....Idiot.  Jon Stewart IS a writer and was a writer on several popular shows.   Try and learn about people you want to insult before you look like an moron.
WilFORD Brimley, not Wilfred.  "They can help ya live a better life."
Stewart, once again, is dead on.  How many times can he point out exactly what is wrong with "main steam" media, get everyone's head nodding, and at the end of the day appear to be on his own.  Unless you count Colbert. If there is one thing that I am sure of, it is that Stewart will have no problem creating jokes about Obama and the Democrats.  They are already writing his material for him.
Most political news coverage has become absolutely sickening.  I don't care who can bowl or who would be fun to grab a beer with.  I want someone that will be more competent at attacking the problems this once great country is facing rather than their opponent.  The focus of the last eight years has been on breaking anything that stood in the way the current administration, including the law.  Is there anyone out there capable of performing the greatest fixer-uper of all-time?
If Fox News is an appendage of the Republican party, then MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC,CBS and Comedy Central are the arms, legs and misc. appendage(s) of the Democrat party.  Jeez, people, emerge from your tunnel.  Can't you handle another point of view?
Actually, now that I think about it, Comedy Central was made to order to fit in with those other networks.
Jon Stewart continues to tell more truth in "fake news" than the main stream media will ever do.
I look forward to his show everyday as a way to cut through most of the BS that the 24 hour channels seem to talk about.
I'm sure I will enjoy his two weeks tearing apart both the democratic and republican conventions.
I can't wait.
http://lastofourkind.blogspot.com
Wow, it's beyond ironic that the headline for this article on the MSNBC home page is "When Jon Stewart Attacks."  Hey, it's not like one of his main criticisms of the press was that they create pointless drama to fill their news cycle, right?
Jon Stewart's personal opinion is as relevant today as Joe Lieberman's.
I'd like to know more about Steve Carell and Steven Colbert's thoughts on Darfur.  Or perhaps a counterpoint from a different comedy central ombudsman.  Are the South Park characters available for roundtable interviews?
Carolynn T,
Just because FOX News os biased towards the right doesn't mean there has to be another media outlet just as biased towards the left. All Stewart's doing is point out the blindingly obvious...but maybe you are simply too ignorant to notice.
Of course, we all know Barack Obama can't cure cancer, either.
Also remember, as good as Jon Stewart is, and he is hilarious, he is a comedian, not a news man.  I've always wondered how so many people get so confused about that and then stay so confused for so long.
He's no more a news person than Jay Leno, David Letterman or Keith Olbermann, even though they all engage in political comedy.  Some are funnier than others, however.
Interesting - this story was up on Google News for about 20 minutes, then got yanked off.
Google News usually has enough room for airhead celebrities and obscure small town posts; why did they censor Stewart's criticisms of the "lap-dog" press?
If more and more people are getting their news from Google and Yahoo, we are in even bigger trouble than I thought.....
