Dem governors paving the way for Obama

From NBC's Bill Hatfield
DENVER -- If Obama wins this November, he may want to send thank-you cards to the nation's Democratic governors for laying the groundwork for his victory.

That, at least, was today's message from the top three members of the Democratic Governors Association -- West Virginia's Joe Manchin, Montana's Brian Schweitzer, and Maryland's Martin O'Malley. The governors met with reporters today to offer bullish assessments of Democratic governors' races in 2008, as well as in 2010. But they spent much of the news conference arguing that they helped paved the way for Obama, linking their styles of bipartisan, problem-solving governance to Illinois Democrat's prospects in November.

Manchin, the DGA chair, tied the Democratic governors' expanded ranks since 2000 to Obama's strong performance in reliably Republican states. "Who would have thought in 2004 or 2000 that a Democrat would be competitive in Montana ... or Colorado?" Manchin observed. Schweitzer agreed, declaring that governors can move elections. "If Ted Strickland had been governor of Ohio four years ago, George Bush wouldn't be president of the United States right now."

Schweitzer, who is up for reelection in the fall and enjoys high approval ratings, linked his performance as governor to Obama's competitive showing against McCain in Montana polls. He emphasized problem-solving governance that crosses party lines, pointing to his own selection of a Republican as lieutenant governor. Schweitzer also applauded Obama for being in touch with Montanans. Tomorrow marks Obama's fifth visit to the state, Schweitzer proudly noted.

Manchin, also facing reelection in November, was more realistic about Obama's chances in West Virginia. Obama was trounced by Hillary Clinton in the state primary, and now runs behind McCain in state polls.  Despite that, Manchin insisted "we are in play" in November, although many analysts wouldn't agree with that assessment. Obama's hurdle, he said, is that West Virginians aren't as familiar with him as they should be. "West Virginians have to know you," Manchin said, pointing to Bill Clinton's comfort level with the state's blue-collar voters during his two terms in office.

The governors were asked whether McCain's potential choice of a Republican governor -- Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty, for instance -- might give McCain's ticket an edge in executive experience over the all-Senate Obama-Biden ticket. Schweitzer joked, "I'd sure have to worry if McCain picked another white guy as his vice president." All three governors believed Joe Biden would be a tremendous boost for Obama.

Manchin, Schweitzer, and O'Malley then outlined the governor's races they believed to be most important this fall. They proclaimed confidence in Democrats' chances in New Hampshire, Washington, Delaware, North Carolina, and Missouri -- along with Manchin's and Schweitzer's own reelection efforts. Manchin said Vermont could be a "squeaker," and said the Utah and North Dakota races were particular challenges.

Finance chair O'Malley reported the DGA was on track to reach its fundraising goal of $20 million for 2008, with $16 million on hand. The DGA considers the 2010 cycle a "critical juncture," O'Malley said, because of the opportunity for state governors to influence congressional and legislative redistricting efforts which occur every 10 years.

"If Obama wins this November"

He won't.
PLEASE STOP!!! I AM ON MSNBC RYING TO ENJOY THE CONVENTION...WILL YOU PLEASE STOP DISCUSSING THE FEUD BETWEEN THE OBAMA AND CAMPAING CAMPS. RIGHT NOW, CNN IS DOING A VERY GOOD JOB COVERING JUST THE CONVENTION. I WILL WATCH CNN UNTIL YOU GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER - THANK YOU.
FR: Manchin, also facing reelection in November, was more realistic about Obama's chances in West Virginia.

Oh, this is too funny. Bunch of conservative white coal miners are not going to vote for a black liberal. They hated Obama enough in the primaries, that carriers over to the general real nicely.
Obama was so respectful of the West Virginians that he didn't even bother campaigning in their state in the primaries. You think they'll vote for him now? Not a chance. WV is the next state that Obama will pull funding for his "57-state strategy"
Thank you to whomever helps point this country in a new direction.

Come November a wave will wash over this country. That wave with be blue.

I can feel the change coming... and it's great.

Unless you work for Big Oil, defense contractors, or the Republic of Georgia- chances are you would benefit more from an Obama presidency than a McCain presidency.

I wouldn't be so quick to call this race, just yet.
You can harp all you want about the folks who keep your lights on Obama DD, but, if you possibly can, keep it to honest discourse-----the moniker you use demeans your status as a Free Speech American
What's with the podium at the Democratic convention? It really looks cheap.
It looks like a prop in a cartoon. I keep expecting Daffy Duck to appear any minute. Oh, Wait! He did! He was disguised as Nancy Pelosi.

I'm getting a little tired of these cheap shots. This one is really disrespectful, . . . ., to the duck.
What's the record for pathetic pieces of trash on stage in one night? I think the Democrats have broken it. Guinness around to certify?
Look at this lineup. Absolute dregs of society. More people, that want more hand outs, from people that work, to people that don't.
Stop with the Clinton,Clinton and Clinton..PLEASE

This is Obama's time. Just shut up about Hillary, no one cares anymore.
I've got to say I'm terribly disappointed by MSNBC's coverage of the convention...  I can listen to you guys chat every day of the week, but had to turn to CNN and CSPAN to actually hear the 'SPEAKERS'...

Please just get 'over' yourselves and your opinions, and let us see history on your network...  Or loose us...

What is it with Democrats and race? Can't they judge a man or woman on their accomplishments and not the color of their skin? Everything isabout what a person is, not who a person is.
Nice to see the Clintons are well represented at the convention. They have done a lot for the Democratic party, and now Obama seems to be trying to dispose of them any way possible. That will come back to haunt him.
Why is MSNBC not showing the entire DNC. There was just a great speach by Jessie Jackson Jr. on which I had to switch stations to C-Span to listen to. Instead you choose to have your boring political experts talk and chat about what they think. tis is crazy. Show the convention. This is why people are tuning in not to listen to your experts. I doubt thst I will rejoin your programming at this time.
What is with MSNBC's broken record of a correspondent?! What a series of terrible post speech interviews. I'm not sure even Clinton holdouts can listen to much more of this half-baked storyline. Is that what's she's going to ask Senator Kennedy when he comes off the stage after a moving tribute?!
I can't watch this anymore. I'm a middle of the road Democrat, but the extreme left wing of the party has obviously taken over my (ex)party. Now I know what Ronald Reagan meant when he said he didn't leave his party (the Democrats in his case too), his party left him.
I love listening to all you guys but you didnt show the great speech by Jesse Jackson Jr.   For all with dish they have a live feed on 211 to catch all the in between speechs.
Please keep Joe on in the morning, I'm asleep.
Poll are of likely voters, what about my 4 kids that registered for the 1st time for Obama??????
Good Evening There are 58............
Senator Obama respected WV greatly:  how do I know?  I live here, and I campaigned for him- canvassing, registering folks to vote, doing phone banks, staging public events. These folks who live here are not Obama's base..........nor will the majority of them ever be.  Most of my fellow Mountaineers will never vote for the IL Senator, even I know that.  But for you, wherever you are, to slough us all into the negative catagory is premature.  The 59th state will be your state of disbelief when this party pulls together, gets it done, and Senator Obama will become POTUS
What is with the Obama/Clinton drama overload, you guys really need a new storyline, I'll be watching CSPAN until then, Geez, give us a break already!
seriously, give it a rest.  you're giving three dozen crazy people attention they don't deserve.  they're irrelevant.  move on.
The 59th state will be your state of disbelief when this party pulls together, gets it done, and Senator Obama will become POTUS

But just like a dog chasing a car, Obama won't have a clue what to do if he ever manages to catch it.
Jesse Jackson Jr. just gave a great speech! Lets elect him President!!

Get rid of Joe Scarborough!!!  I have to change the channel every time he comes on.  Love to watch Kieth and Rachel.
The ticket to prosperity is Obama-Biden. It is time to build the economy back up. When Clinton was in office the DOW grew 221%. (3,242 on 1/20/93 when Clinton’s entered the White House and 10,588 when Clinton left on 1/19/01). When Bush Jr. entered office the DOW was at 10,588 and now it is at 11,300. Bush Jr. grew the DOW only 7% (1% per year or less interest than one would make at a bank). Clinton's administration grew 22 million new jobs. Bush Jr. 80% less. Bush Sr. did not do much better than his son. Bush Sr. only grew the DOW 38%.
Low Bar...

If the expectations are low on speeches, you should be touting McCain... lord knows him giving a speech in the dark of the night would even drive crickets to sleep.

I can hear it now...

"..... my friends."

And to the idiot who is talking a guiness records... I guess you haven't looked at the lineup the RNC is offering up.

George Bush and Dick Cheney on opening night?  They have a combined approval rating of 2.  You and your sister (or wife) apparently see eye to eye on greatness!
