McCain: Here's the POW card again

Posted: Tuesday, August 26, 2008 8:57 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Per NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy, McCain said this on Leno last night in response to the flap over how many homes he and Cindy own. “You know, could I just mention to you, Jay, and a moment of seriousness. I spent five and a half years in a prison cell, without-I didn’t have a house, I didn’t have a kitchen table, I didn’t have a table, I didn’t have a chair. And I spent those five and a half years, because-not because I wanted to get a house when I got out. And you know, I’m very proud of Cindy’s father, he was a guy that barely got out of high school, fought in World War II in the Army Air Corps, came home and made a business and made the American dream.”

Also yesterday, McCain accepted the endorsement of Puerto Rican rapper "Daddy Yankee," the Los Angeles Times reports. "McCain built up the suspense by withholding the guest's name at first, but then gave it away, saying, 'One of his most famous songs, I know you're very familiar with: 'Gasolina' ' -- drawing gasps of surprise from the crowd -- and then finally said, 'Well, here he is, Daddy Yankee.' Though McCain has sometimes shown surprising familiarity with rap stars and pop culture references because of the musical tastes of his daughters, it is unlikely that the conservative Republican would have made a point of mentioning the song had he known that the 'Gasolina' lyrics are loaded with sexual references. Although there's some debate about what the word 'gasolina' means in this context, one thing is certain: It's not a petroleum product." And it has nothing to do with off-shore drilling.

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports on the return of Mark McKinnon to the McCain fold (at least for McCain week). He's helping Cindy McCain with her convention speech, which will occur on the third night of the convention. "Finishing touches" on the speech have been in the works for a couple of weeks. McKinnon describes Cindy McCain as "the best asset (for the campaign) I knew the least about."

McKinnon stepped away from a visible role in the campaign in June after a pledge that he would not craft the advertising campaign against Obama. McKinnon had said he would "not be the tip of the spear" attacking Obama. McKinnon does however offer some ideas and advice to the current McCain ad strategy.

Advisers say Mrs. McCain's remarks will "give a sense of her and who she is."  Mrs. McCain, 54, will add dimension to her husband as a father and an example of service. The McCains have generally avoided discussing their four children on the campaign trail except for acknowledging frequent trail traveler Meghan. When Mrs. McCain introduces her husband at campaign events, she will sometimes briefly reference their two sons now on active duty. Despite the caution they've shown on the stump, advisers say Mrs. McCain is expected to talk about their sons' military service as her reason and motivation in this campaign.  The campaign sought special permission for Jack and Jimmy to attend because their active duty status prevents them participating in political events. They will not be in uniform. The most shy and youngest, Bridget, 17, who was adopted from a Mother Theresa orphanage is also expected to make a rare campaign appearance at the convention.

Sen. John Thune says he won’t be McCain’s veep. “I would say I'm out of the running,” he said Monday.

So he's officially hiding behind his POW experience.  What a dirthead.

Gotta respect the service, but the fact that he hides behind it when challenged on the least thing (and there are many things to call him on) really proves that this former flyboy's days are long, long past.
Is it me or do they totally disrespect Mika on Morning Joe?  They never let her finish a sentence, they talk over her like her opinion does not count and Joe makes rude jokes about her and she just sits there with a blank look on her face, like she is scared to really speak back to him.
I know she is his ‘Side Kick’, but does that mean he can kick her (back) side at his whim?

Just my observation…

Michelle was GREAT last night, wasn’t she?  Love it !!!  She’ll be a lovely and gracious First Lady.

P.S. Why are you still on the air Joe?
I get it..........he was a POW.  Does that mean if I don't vote for him, I am "unpatriotic"?  Does being a POW somehow entitle you the Presidency?

That truly is what the Dems should be hammering on - listen to hope, not fears.

For that is exactly how the Repubs had won in the past and that is how they intend to win again this time. Scare the living daylights out of all of us into voting them in office.

I am begging the DNC to toughen up - focus on the message that would resonate in the hearts and minds of the entire country - Fear is not the reason to elect someone in office. Highlight the administrations failings and what we need right now.

Please if the Repubs get it again this time, there is no hope we are all going down the drain. And it is the responsibility of the DNC to make sure that doesn't happen. Grow a back bone and attack where it matters.

MSNBC please post this.
Noun, verb, "POW"

We respect your service John, but being a POW is not a qualification to be President.

Can't wait for Cindy McCain's speech.  I hope the networks show her and then show Michelle's so the America people can see that Michelle will be a far greater First Lady.
I would say that Cindy McCain has a pretty high bar to try and achieve after Michelle Obama's speech. It will be hard to beat if possible at all.

So being a POW allows you to get a pass on every single issue involved in a campaign for President. News to me.

John, what about the Keating 5?

noun.verb.POW.

John, what about the failure to find WMD's in Iraq?

noun.verb.POW.

John, what about your 95% voting record with the president that you're saying you're nothing like?

noun.verb.POW.

noun.verb.POW., my friends, noun.verb.POW.....
Maybe McCain should have been a community organizer instead.
Hey John McBush  , guess what ?  Martha Stewart spent some time in a small cell should we vote her POTUS as well. Oh yeah she was serving for herself not the country.
This is getting old. Real old. The POW card has actually been having a negative effect. I been talking to a few former POWs lately from Vietnam and they all say that if McCain was a POW and tortured for as long as he says he was then he should be going to counciling and not going to White House.

But Mr. McCain thinks it qualifies him to be POTUS? John McCain's American Dream: a child in every war (draft) and a foreclosure on every home (oil based economy instead of job based economy).

At least with Obama I know that if he says "we tried every diplomatic aproach and now we are force to go to war," I can believe him. If McCain said that I'd think he's trying to make everyone's kid a POW in their own nation.....

I'm just saying
Okay.. i think that this is getting ridiculous... But like Bill Maher said Americans that are dumb enough to fall for this same republican jibberish deserve another idiot in the white house.. Wake up America.. we don't have to feel like we can have a drink with a guy to say he's my president.. Remember he represents the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.. Not a poster child for all the beer companies..
It seems like that statement about his time as a war prisoner actually has less than zero to do with how many homes he owns. It comes off as completely unrelated rambling.

McSLIME has nothing else to say

Noun - Verb - POW

And I understand, he wasn't the hero he claims to be... with the hotel room and the private "personal" nurse after they found out who his daddy was... Getting drunk the night before the day he was shot down.  Oh, and that HE broke his own arms when he ejected because he did not hold them in, like he was trained. Yeah, that's a maverick alright.

SongBird Mccain = More Pain

Ok, I'm a veteran, but I don't use my time in the military as clutch for every mistake or gaffe I may make. How long is this guy going to play the POW card. I someone uses their race or gender as many times as this guy does...they would be accused of using the race of gender card. I this was a game of spades and the POW card was the biggest card in the deck he would win all the time.....On another note...EXCELLENT Speech Michelle Obama!
Oh yea, Jim Hensley sure lived the American dream.  That is if being in the mob is part of the American dream.

After a conviction  of falsifying liquor records to conceal illegal distribution of whiskey in 1948 when his brother spent a year in jail (he got a 6 month suspended sentance).  Another prosection but aquital in 1953, owning a horse track, and "luckily" getting  state liquor license despite this normally being disqualified for past felony conviction.

What a break getting an  Anheuser-Busch distributorship (must have called in alot of favors for that).
Enough. We KNOW he was a POW in Vietnam!  Has he done nothing else in his life?  To hear him and his supporters lately - NO!  Is this his ONLY qualification to be president?
He still didn't answer the question of how many homes they own.  I think its a silly question by itself.  But when will these so-called political pundits start asking themselves "wait a second, John McCain was in the Saddlebrook church answering questions that were supposed to be pretty tough without hesitations, but he's stumped by something so basic as how many houses do you own?  What gives?"  There's been a not so subtle effort by the Republicans to paint Sen Obama as someone who can't speak w/o a teleprompter or a script and he's basically propped up by his campaign staff...you know "an empty suit". There's an empty suit in this campaign, but it's not the guy the MSM would lead you to believe it is.
He is still a POW..and he wants to gain something from that?
Someday he'll move past the past or he's doomed to keep repeating it...
I don't want him to make me one either...
Sorry don't need that...That is not in anyones game plan..
What does being a POW have to do with his not knowing how many houses he owns?  Are we to conclude that, because he was tortured 40 years ago, he suffers short-term or long-term memory loss today?

Enough with the "I was a POW".  We know, we know and we are thankful.  Now -2008- you are running for POTUS, please tell me why I should vote for you.  I have always voted republican, I am registered republican and this year will be the first time I check the box for a nominee I am proud of - not do as I have done in the past- check the box that is the guy running opposite of the one I can't stand.  This year I will proudly vote for Obama.  I just wish my state wasn't so RED, but I will cast my vote and pray that the rest of the country votes BLUE.
Ugh.  Respect for McCain gone in 3... 2... 1...

http://thepajamapundit.com/
McCain's a piece of work...even with the outcry from vets about his "de-valuing" of the sacrifice by using it as a crutch....he continues to use it as a crutch!  Speaking, once again, to his moral & ethical bankruptedness.
A noun a verb and POW.  McCain's get out of a screw-up free card.
McCain demeans the experience of every POW when he cheaply plays the POW card.   One thing is for sure:  it shows how damaging the McCain camp believes that line of attack could be.   Now the question is for Obama:  will he relentlessly hammer the line of attack, as the GOP does so well, or will he think he "won" the issue and move on.   Obama's (and most Democrats) tendency is to move on, thinking that they made their point.  The reason the GOP wins is they take 3 or 4 messages and hammer them until most people who pay attention on a daily basis have long ago said, "enough already."  But the GOP realizes it's only after weeks of pounding the same message that it eventually gets through to the wider populace.
oh, is that why Mccain dumped his very ill first wife for a Billionaire Beer Heiress??  Because he was a POW,  and he didn't have a table for five years?  That excuse is getting sooo lame.
McCain is past pathetic with his POW POW POW line.  And he is starting to sound like the crotchety Bill Cosby character -- "When I was younger, I didn't have a house, or a chair, or a table...and I had to walk to school uphill ... both ways ... in the snow and the rain ... pulling a cart ...five miles to the old one-room schoolhouse..."
*Ignoring John McCain*
Yep...that's all he's got.
Let's talk going from surplus to deficit in the last 8 years.
Let's talk the state of our military.
Let's talk suicide rate among Iraq vets.
Let's talk about our oil dependency.
Let's talk energy.
Let's talk the price of gas.
Let's talk the price of food.
Let's talk home foreclosures and decline in home values.
Let's talk jobs for those in MI, PA, OH.....
Let's talk Bill of Rights.
Let's talk Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.
Let's talk Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Let's talk our standing in the world and with our allies.
Let's talk tax reductions for the wealthy and not the rest of our citizens.
Let's talk Health Care.
Let's talk McCain's voting record. (95% with Bush in 2007)
Let's talk the last time McCain showed up in the Senate.
He calls Obama a celebrity because people, including pop stars, like him. So he counters by going on Jay Leno and going to see high school kids (who can't vote yet) with Daddy Yankee? Sounds like he's making a special appearance at a school dance because he's "not a celebrity." Do you even know what the song "Gasolina" is about? Conservative parents should be pissed. And what has Daddy Yankee done recently with his life that makes him soooo important?

Ok McCain. Obama has the support of people around the world including celebrities with a plethera of community service and charity organizations and you have the support of..... Daddy Yankee.

I am glad though that McCain is finally letting his wife speak instead of hiding her. I am interested in what the rich, white, born with a silver spoon in her mouth, never really had to work hard in her life, and has no knowledge of the everyman's struggle version of Michelle Obama has to say at the Republican convention.

I'm just saying.
McPOW is pathetic. Senility is not a virtue, and it is, in the final analysis, the only thing that matters.  Something up there is not connected. Policy aside, HE'S TOO OLD!

And by the way, his policies are proven failures.
Noun...Verb...POW

Could he cheapen it anymore? I mean... Jay Leno? Seriously, you have to play the POW card to Jay Leno?

Sad... shameful really.

"Keating 5?" Hey! NOUN VERB POW

"Cone of Silence?" Hey! NOUN VERB POW

"Adultery?" HEY! NOUN VERB POW

"7 Houses?" HEY! NOUN VERB POW!

Well... at least it's not Noun Verb Surge.

Hmmm... I guess I thought Cindy McCain wasn't going to speak... She's got a heck of a job following last night's speech by Michelle Obama.

http://www.rodneyhopper.com
Oh, boy, McCain is legit now, he has a rapper who sings(?!) dirty songs.  Maybe they played that song while Cindy Lou Who (who has more houses than two)did a bump and grind at the biker bar's Miss Biker contest.
Im surprised Cindy Lou Who (who has more houses than two) doesn't have her butler or someone do her speech for her. It'll be interesting how she sells herself; "I grew up a pampered princess who became an adulteress, then served as arm candy for a man 19 years older than I am, and I've never done an honest day's work in my life."  Hardly a working-class, hardscrabble Michelle Obama story. Will she tell us how much she loves her kids when the nanny isn't around?
There is a stark difference between the Obama's and the McCains. The Obama's ARE the middle class family; the McCain's inherited their wealth. The Obama's worked hard for their American dreams; the McCain's were handed a dream on a silver platter. The Obama's pulled themselves up by their boot straps and succeeded; the McCain's counted on others for their money and connections. HOW can anyone identify with the McCain's? THEY certainly CAN'T identify with anyone of us. They cannot imagine struggling to pay their bills. Not with 8 houses and Cindy's large monthly credit card balance. Do you think John McCain can identify with the "pain at the pump" when he buys $500 Italian loafers? Pleeze. The McCain's are rich, out-of-touch elitists who have no idea what everyday life is for any of us. The choice is very clear. Obama/Biden '08!
mccain's pow story has truly become his "race" card. He is entitled to all the respect in the world for his service, but let's call it what it is: he plays that card any time a situation calls for a deflection from criticism or warranted negativity. All leno asked was how many houses he had-he could have just brushed it off and said "ask my staff." But no. He instead made sure to remind everyone about being a POW, yet Leno missed the opportunity to remind McCain and viewers that, sorry that does not qualify you to be president. It is painfully evident that McCain thinks it does.
I mean dude the POW card is a tired response everytime you are challenged.. I guess when you are challenged on the economy your response will be..
" well you know I was in a POW camp for 5 1/2 years and I couldn't think about the economy that is why I am so ill equipped to handle it."  But you were smart enough to marry a woman that was worth a fortune.. or maybe in your case it was probably an arranged marriage that gave you a better standing in the world.. or maybe thats why cindy just brought you a child home from overseas to call your own like a good little pet... Smells quit elitist and snobby to be..
We as American appreciate your services and respect the years you were a prisoner.  That is now been said so many times, I begin to wonder how much else you have done.  Tell me more about why we need to drill off shore and how quickly we can gasoline out of the ground...  Oh, that's right; gasoline is refined from oil and that takes time and equipment that you haven't talked about expanding at all as well as increacing fuel efficiency standards for ALL vehicles (cars, trucks, ships etc).
What does this headline mean? "Here is the POW card again"? Oh don't patronize me guys, you get off on this hog-wash McCain dishes out.
Noun, verb, POW.
God..I am so sick of this man spouting POW all over the place.
It scares the hell out of me that he might be President.
noun verb P-O-W

As Wesley Clark said, getting shot down and being a POW DOES NOT give you Experience that qualifies you to be commander in chief.  It just doesn't.

Rachel Maddow was great last night pointing out (as Maureen Dowd did over the weekend) that if you keep playing the POW card in your fantasy game of WAR - eventually people realize you printed yourself a whole 'deck' of jokers that you are keeping up your sleeve.  It becomes obvious and transparent that you are a one trick pony with no real experience at ANYTHING.

Which is fine when you are in your 30's and 40's and you can continue a lifelong career path of achievement and world experience.  But when you are 72 (sic, 3 days) and the only thing you've got is something that happened 40 years ago, well then you just look a little stupid.  "I spent 5 1/2 years in a hole in 'Nam and all I have to show for it is this lousy nomination" or something equally inane.

Service to country is honorable - for ALL who have served, in whatever capacity.  Our men and women in uniform deserve our respect; but unlike postal jobs, it doesn't automatically bump your score by 10 or 15 points.
Michelle Obama was an inspiration last to night to millions of Americans, she and Barack lived the American dream and for two African Americans during that time, they overcame all stereotypes and became two very accomplished people, they are truly what this country is about!

Noun, Verb, POW
I will be glad when more people of the media call McCain out on using the POW card.  They need to confront him personally.  I think Rachel was great last night when she was talking about it.  She is the only one who will stand up to Pat and I think she is great at it.  More of the media should be like her.

There are alot of veterans who DON'T have seven houses, John. That's the point. You got your pay off, now you represent the interests of the beer distributers, the top 1%, and the oil companies, but who represents the middle class veterans? Not you.
I wish McCain would stop playing the POW card, he is really starting to cheapin it. He needs to learn how to answer tough questions without bringing up the POW thing everytime. It's starting to make him look weak, like Giuliani.
Ten dollars say that McPOW rejects and renounces the endorsement by Friday.
