Hillary: 'No way, no how, no McCain'

Posted: Tuesday, August 26, 2008 11:04 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
DENVER, Colo -- Hillary Clinton kicked off her much-anticipated speech here at the Democratic National Convention with a call for unity and some sharp words for John McCain.

"I am honored to be here tonight. A proud mother. A proud Democrat. A proud New York Democrat. A proud American. And a proud supporter of Barack Obama," Clinton began.

"My friends, it is time to take back the country we love. ...Whether you voted for me, or voted for Barack, the time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose. We are on the same team, and none of us can sit on the sidelines. This is a fight for the future. And it's a fight we must win.

"I haven't spent the past 35 years in the trenches advocating for children, campaigning for universal health care, helping parents balance work and family, and fighting for women's rights at home and around the world . . . to see another Republican in the White House squander the promise of our country and the hopes of our people.

"And you haven't worked so hard over the last 18 months, or endured the last eight years, to suffer through more failed leadership.

"No way. No how. No McCain.

"Barack Obama is my candidate. And he must be our President."

She later called McCain her "friend" who "has served our country with honor and courage. But we don't need four more years of the last eight years."

And she was just getting started.

"John McCain says the economy is fundamentally sound. John McCain doesn't think that 47 million people without health insurance is a crisis. John McCain wants to privatize Social Security. And in 2008, he still thinks it's okay when women don't earn equal pay for equal work.

"With an agenda like that, it makes sense that George Bush and John McCain will be together next week in the Twin Cities. Because these days they're awfully hard to tell apart."

*** UPDATE *** The McCain campaign responded, seizing on Clinton not explicitly saying Obama was ready to be Commander-in-Chief: “Senator Clinton ran her presidential campaign making clear that Barack Obama is not prepared to lead as commander in chief," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said. "Nowhere tonight did she alter that assessment. Nowhere tonight did she say that Barack Obama is ready to lead. Millions of Hillary Clinton supporters and millions of Americans remain concerned about whether Barack Obama is ready to be President.”

Excellent speech.  We have heard no better this year and may not soon hear the equal.

Godspeed, indeed!
Wow just WOW
Knocked it out of the park. Great, great, job.

Excellent speech.  We have heard no better this year and may not soon hear the equal.

Godspeed, indeed!
Brilliant speech, Hillary! You're best yet.

Keep going!
Obama/Bidon '08
great job. McCain and the republicans must be dodoing in their pants. Dems unite. we can't afford 4 more years. No way No how No McCain. McCain is no maverick, but a sidekick. Excellent job today dems. Keep it going tomorrow.
Senator Clinton:

Your speech was AMAZING! I was humbled by your grace, your fire, and your passion.

Now I know why my 8 year old daughter roots for you still . . . thanks for reminding me what being a Clinton is really all about - I had forgotten.

Good to be on the same team again!
I will say that I am a supporter of Obama, but I had to see Hillary's speech tonight. I MUST say, Hillary's speech was PERFECT! To all of you PUMA people, take note and listen to her speech...No Way, No How, NO McCAIN!!!! Vote no her beliefs, not the person.
what's puma? oh that's right, it's the 70 or so people that are secret republicans and want to spread lies and tear our party apart.

Hillary had a fantastic speech and I am committed to obama/biden ticket.
Nice job Hill!  I hope the Supers were listening!
...wow...
Good job lady...  I'm proud of her...
As an ardent Hillary basher, i can simply say

You've got alot of class, and i was wrong about you.

The convention tonight was very well done, and the speakers that led up to Hillary were perfect to set the tone for what was a defining moment in this presidential campaign.  Her speech was amazing, and i could not believe how classy she was.

i'm looking forward to seeing her and Barack working together to fix the problems of this country.
I'm just glad her speach is over.  She did a fine job, too bad she is not the nominee.  Now we can look forward to the day McCain is sworn as president.  Then we can expect the news media to scream cheat & anything else possible to distract from the work at hand.  Ofcoarse the dems will continue to work against the president & the will of the people, because THEY know what is best for America.
No Way

No How

No McCain

My personal veiw is that was all that was needed from you Senator Clinton.

Yes We Can
HRC

Powerful, emotive, classy.  For the sake of our future and my grandchildren, thank you for bringing us unity.  You are so right, we don't have a vote to spare or a moment to waste.
did I really see "Arab-America" banners being held by supporters?

god help us..............
Fox News' Kristol's first words in his review of Hillary's speech was "shockingly minimal endorsement."  What speech did that guy just watch?  How much more full-throated and ringing could it be?
Hillary will be our President someday.
Blown away... Hillary has given rise to the cause of this fall. Let's get it done folks... let's get it done. "No way, no how, NO McCAIN!".
No Way

No How

No McCain!
Game...Set...Match!
wow to Hillary... You are THE Woman....
Way to go Hillary!  She hit it out of the park.  It was the perfect pitch, and hit all the right notes.

Obama/Biden '08
WOW!!!  and THANK YOU!!!  Hillary, you just gave this country a fighting chance at an even brighter future - together.
Maybe we can ALL raise the level of dignity in our discussions now...EVEN with the Rebublicans!  The "disappointment" in the lack of "red meat" being tossed at this convention now becomes clearer...
Anyone care to join the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?  Hillary done did us good, didn't she?
WOW!! She won me! I like her again!!
First, an excellent speech. Still, you're a politician Hillary, and really had no other choice. I, as a mere citizen, am not constrained to fall in line. I hope you keep your nose clean for the next 4-8 years so I can have the pleasure of voting for you for President again.

I don't really care if Obama or McCain wins this election. Obama is going to be far too beholden to the huge mass of power-brokers who got him to the White House to have any actual power as a President. He will be another mouth-piece similar to our current President. The plus side being the democratic party operatives he'll be mouthing for a tad easier to stomach than their republican counter parts. A McCain presidency might be entertaining. Oh, he's kow-towing to the base now as any good politician running for president must. But he's a maverick at heart, and at his age, has very little to loose. I think it'd be interesting to have such a person in the White House as it'd be a nice change from the highly scripted facades we are currently saddled with.

Still, it saddens me a little that the strongest candidate won't be on the ballot this November. I wonder if the party establishment were too terrified of being beholden to the Clintons. She might not have been as entertaining as a possible McCain presidency, but she'd certainly have been a lot more interesting then the yes-man our most likely president Obama will be.

Do what it takes to not be blamed if Obama looses this election Clinton. I'd very much like to see you back on the ballot when a spot opens up for President again.
I was not a Clinton supporter but I have to admit that one HELL of a speech.  Up until tonight, Barack was the only one who had brought me to tears from their speech and there was a glimps of those tears coming back tonight.  I hope her supporters listened to her and understand what is at stake.  She is a fighter and I would love to see her out on the campaign trail speaking like that.  In fact, no offense to Reid, but I would love to see Hillary as Senate Majority Leader because he is a joke.
It was a rousing speech,
great points and a strong sppech of support for Senator Obama.
The catfight myth can now go away,
unless you guys have nothing else to talk about.
UNITY is our battle cry!!!
We will unify, we will defeat the party of can't.
I must say this . Hillary Clinton I always said I started off for you but was moved by Obama and his Big Speeches. Let me say this you put down one hell of a Big Speech yourself tonight and I am very greatful for what you did. This entire campaign you made our candidate a stronger candidate. Now the support that you not only gave but called for shows the class and love you have for this great nation. I truly believed all along that you love our country, but your unselfish speech you gave tonight was proof positive of that fact. So I will coin some of your phrases from tonight.  No way ,No how ,No McCain. So to all Clinton and Obama fans the call has been made time for us to be Fired Up and Ready To Go. We are all on the same team.
I listened to Senator Clinton tonight, but didn't hear her support Candidate Obama. Why? Why could she not say anything more than, "I support our democratic nominee". She didn't say, "I campaigned hard against Obama, and I saw over that time that he is capable of leading our country." Or, "I got to know him personally. I saw that he is smart and bright and a leader for our party and country". Also, she said, "I was/am... and so is Obama". NOTHING was personal about her support of our nominee. I am frustrated with our party. I cannot stand the thought of another Republican, but I DID NOT hear anything from Clinton tonight to tell me, with confidence, that Barack Obama is the best candidate for president. I am ashamed to call myself a democrat after tonight.
wow! what ever you say senator.God bless
Please PUMA'S give it up,game over
Thank you Senator Hillary Clinton
We love you more now and as an obama donor i will now
make a donation to help clear your debt. thanks for
the good speech& support.
Obama/Biden/08-16
Hillary just made history with that speech!!  Check, McCain!!  Your move.

GoBama\GoBiden '08
She did Great.  She did exactly what she needed to do.  Now it just waits on her husband, but it was great as a supporter of Obama during the primary who never wanted to get too jaded to be able to root for Hillary again as well
That speech knocked me off the fence...gotta vote for the big D. So tell me you Democratic faitful, why wasn't SHE on the ticket?! No way, no how, would there even be a race!
Hillary just made history with that speech!!  Check, McCain!!  Your move.

GoBama\GoBiden '08
35 years of working her a** off for the issues that matter most for Dems.  Capturing ALL of the voters Dems have ALWAYS needed to WIN the WH.  Any of you out there having buyers remorse yet?  How the he** do we throw this woman away for the "hope" and "inspiration" of a brand new, done little, unproven, obama?
God save our Party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing speech,

I have been a Obama supporter and a not so big Clinton fan. After that speech I have a newfound respect for Senator Clinton. All I can say is that a McCain presidency is equal to the final days of the Roman empire....Obama/Biden will bring the country back to greatness

Firefighters for OBAMA/BIDEN
It was a great speech. Right on target. I wish she was the VP. She clearly showed us why we should vote for Obama, not McCain.

We love you Hillary.

Obama 08
She was brilliant tonight! Thank you Hillary!
The media has been  patronizing Clinton supporters their support was to her, (female) like  she didnt have a platform? policy?   This condescending attitude towards Clinton supporters is pathetic.
Wow!  I have to admit, I have never been a Hillary Clinton supporter, but she really knocked it out of the park tonight.  After seeing Michelle Obama's speech last night, I thought the bar had been set very high for Hillary, but she easily cleared the bar and then some.  If I had seen her make a speech with this much passion early in the race, I might have had a harder time choosing between her and Barack Obama.  As it is, I have to give her a great deal of credit for handling this night with such passion and grace.  It must have been difficult to do this when she must have been so disappointed that she was not the nominee.  She did the right thing and she will always be remembered as a winner for this.
A class act through and through. And I am one of those Obama supporters who felt pretty beat up by the long primary. I have never felt so much respect and admiration for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. You really did make history tonight.
Brilliant. Hillary went beyond expectations and absolved herself of all responsibility for the November election. It is now Obama's to win or lose. If he pulls it off, she gets credit because of tonight. If he fails, he's finished. And Hillary, well, in the words of Ms. Tubman, goes on. Fascinating politics. Welcome to the 21st century.
Hillary totally knocked it OUT OF THE PARK!  WOW! An awe-inspiring speech and the grandest of gestures from a true Democratic statesman(woman?).  Senator Clinton, you have the thanks of a deeply grateful, unified Democratic party.
NOW the narrative will change to UNITY!
