Night Two: The gloves come off

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
Unlike last night, speakers at the Democratic convention this evening took off their gloves, attacking McCain and linking him to President Bush.

Pennsylvania on the attack
Although Clinton won Pennsylvania during the primaries and Gov. Ed Rendell enthusiastically supported the New York senator, both Rendell and Sen. Bob Casey took a lead in attacks with forceful language. Rendell went after the lobbyists working for McCain's campaign.

"If you look past the speeches of John McCain, here's what you see: Many of John McCain's top advisers top advisers worked as lobbyists for the oil and gas companies. I guess that explains why he wants to give another $4 billion-dollar tax break to oil companies. And if you look past his speeches to his record, one thing is absolutely clear. John McCain has never believed in renewable energy and he won't make it part of America's future."

He also linked McCain to Bush on his energy policy. "It's clear, the only thing green in John McCain's energy plans are the billions of dollars he's promising in more tax cuts to oil companies. And the only thing that he'll recycle is the same failed George Bush approach to energy policy."

Casey, as mentioned earlier, called McCain Bush's sidekick. "The people of Pennsylvania can't afford four more years of Bush-Cheney economics, and you know what -- with John McCain, that's exactly what we'd get. John McCain calls himself a maverick, but he votes with George Bush over 90 percent of the time. That's not a maverick. That's a sidekick."

Using McCain's words against him
Meanwhile, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano used McCain's words against him. On the stump, McCain often jokes about former Arizonans who failed in their attempts to become president, saying mothers in the state have almost given up on telling their children they can do anything, even become president. Napolitano said not so fast, McCain.

"Arizonans are also proud of their political tradition. From Barry Goldwater to Mo Udall to Bruce Babbitt. Now, there's a pattern here. There's a pattern here. Barry Goldwater ran for president and he lost. Mo Udall ran for president and he lost. Bruce Babbitt ran for president and he lost. Now speaking for myself and for at least this next election, this is one Arizona tradition I'd like to see continue."

Napolitano continued, attacking McCain once again using his own words. "Just as I am proud of Arizona, I like to be positive about my fellow Arizonans. So I wanted to say something positive tonight about Senator McCain. When I heard him say that the economy is not issue he understands as well as he should, my problem was solved because I can say to you tonight positively that John McCain is right. He doesn't understand the economy as well as he should."

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm went after McCain specifically about her state. "Senator McCain came to Michigan, and he told those who had been laid off, he said well, 'Your jobs are gone and they are not coming back.' Well, I tell you what, if he's president, he's probably right. If Senator Obama and Joe Biden are president and vice president, we will create manufacturing jobs in this country."

The economy
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland also hit McCain on the economy. "John McCain has no problem hitting the snooze button on the economy because he's never been a part of the middle class. And I would say to him, Sen. McCain it's time for your wakeup call because we just can't afford more of the same."

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer took a jab at McCain's houses: "We want an economy that works for all of us, for people who are struggling to own just one home, let alone seven homes."

Said New York Gov. David Peterson: "The question in this race is which of the candidates will make the change that will restore the promise of America. Is it John McCain?," Peterson asked, enticing loud no's from the audience. "No? I'm shocked. Maybe that's because John McCain continues to claim that President Bush's policies have been great for the economy. In 2007, John McCain voted with the administration 95% of the time. So if he is the answer, the question must be ridiculous.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius not only linked McCain to Bush, but also said he is resorting to Karl Rove politics. "Even though John McCain has spent 26 years in Washington voting over and over again against investing in renewable energy, John McCain does support some renewables. He wants to renew the failed Bush agenda for another four years. John McCain has also renewed the Bush Rove style of politics, focus on bringing down your opponent instead of lifting America up. But as a governor who works with the Republican legislature everyday, I can tell you we can't bring about positive change unless we fix our divisive politics."

Women's issues
New York Rep. Nydia Velazquez passionately expressed her frustration with McCain on equal pay. "John McCain has already proven to be more of the same. He has constantly opposed opportunities for women in the workforce, saying they just need training and education. Senator McCain should know that women already earn more advanced degrees than men. Senator McCain should know that we deserve and we will demand a level playing field. John McCain will not just hold back female entrepreneurs; he will hurt all small businesses."

I am still watching the Tivo, so can't speak to the main speeches, yet; but after Shuster skewering PUMA a couple of weeks ago on Hardball, it became crystal clear to me that the only ones who don't want party unity are the MSM.

Donna, NJ – I am completely frustrated with your self purported economic prowess.  You quote OLD SCHOOL economic theory and fail to bring up some of the actual realities of the 21st century. Tax Cuts during WAR are foolhardy, Global Markets and SERVICE as a National ‘Product’ instead of Goods.  We import more than we export and we waste more than both combined.  When we pump oil – it hits the global market.  Old School economics do not drive our markets.  It is FOOLISH of you to keep beating this dead horse.  PS.  When people claim corporations will raise prices to cover tax liabilities or ship the jobs overseas it is overall Laughable to me.  Our Corporate Tax rates are some of the LOWEST in the world.  The jobs shipped over seas gave tax breaks to American companies who wouldn’t dream of incorporating internationally – That’s where they would feel the TRUE tax squeeze.  I think you’ve been properly ‘outed’ as the Republican Troll that you are.  Why don’t you take your econ book and apply it to the International community that we are trying to compete with.  And seriously, get a grip – you aren’t all that AND the bag of ruffles.

That’s pretty funny.  I’ve been mentally calling her EconDonnaJuan; but yours is good, too.  PS.  I mentally call you ‘Divine CA’
There were some really great lines tonight- many of which you caught.  You did, however, miss this gem from Kathleen Sebelius:

"John McCain's version: There's no place like home...or a home...or a home...or a home...or a
home..."

Casey's "sidekick" line was definitely my favorite, though.  All of a sudden, I am envisioning Senator McCain riding in one of those little motorcycle sidecars.  Good stuff.
I was/am an ardent Hillary supporter.  I wasn't sure if I would vote this year.  Of course, I'm not stupid enough to say I'd vote for McCain, but I didn't know if I should vote for Obama.
After Hillary's words tonight, I am 100% sure I will vote for Obama.

I just watched Hillary Clinton’s speech at the Democratic convention and, as you would expect, was impressed.  In my own mind I am still sincerely convinced that Barack Obama will be the best for the country yet I am swayed that there probably is little doubt that Hillary Clinton could have had an easier time winning.  Which is saying that Hillary is really better at campaigning yet Barack does sincerely offer better focus on the issues and governing skills; obviously neither would have ever make a bad president.  In contrast, I am strongly impacted with the feeling that the Republicans basically are currently just literally a real fraud.  I’m not saying that every Republican is a fraud but I am saying that I am struck with the feeling that as a party they only represent a few Americans, that they are grossly dishonest and that they arrogantly have no hesitation to just take care of only their own personal interests.  This country’s history is built on the achievements of both parties but there have been times when one party was needed to take control and literally stop the other from hurting this country … I think that is where we are at now.  I was a registered Republican for many years and believed that the best government was the least government and that government should only do for the people that which they can’t do for themselves  … but today those principals have been used to hide a concentration on neglecting government’s responsibilities and on focusing on benefiting only a select few.  The Republican Party has aggressively and arrogantly undertaken to try to control and manipulate public opinion for their own purposes, not with fact and honest presentation of their positions but rather with subterfuge and dishonest attacks against anyone who confronts them.  If they continue to be successful, the country is, the people are the real and significant losers.
C'mon people...PICK UP ON THIS!  It's about the dignity of the process also.  I really wish the media would do more than note the lack of "red meat"...there HAS to be a respectful dialog in order to solve these great issues and save our way of life.  We need to start now.
As usual, Sebelius hits the nail – albeit gently – on the head. Lemmings thoughtless enough to fall for Karl Rove's political deceit are responsible for America under George Bush going so far off the track.

Guess what – if you fall for the same lies and trickery from the McCain campaign (the last refuge of the Disciples of Rove), we'll get the same failed policies and the same decline.

You know what they say – one definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. If you're in a hole, the first thing is to stop digging.
Please take Pat Roberson and show him the pasture.  Fox would not have a demo on to do his damage.  He is ridiculous.
I would have liked to see Rendell.  They should have put him later in the night.  The star of course was Hillary.  I'm no fan of hers, but she really did great tonight.  We needed that.

Obama / Biden 08
Casey's line: "John McCain calls himself a maverick, but he votes with George Bush over 90 percent of the time. That's not a maverick. That's a sidekick."

BOOM! Line of the night...

The chant of four more months was priceless.

Warner's speech was great... hit Bush and McCain, but him them with positivity. It was strangely effective.

Clinton, though... Stunner.

She could not have done a better job. She is truly the best of us. I've had my misgivings over the past few months, but man did she deliver tonight.

I am so proud to participate in this campaign.

The Democrats have controlled the Congress for the last few years--I'm disillusioned--I've seen no changes. I see very little difference between the two parties. A  terribly disappointing choice this year--we are still losing Americans in Iraq. The Dems gave us lots of hope--we got nothing.
You thought the gloves came out!  Are you kidding me?
I am a Democrat and am so disappointed in this convention.  It is just like 2004, a lovefest!  Put on the "serious gloves" and come out fighting or you are going to lose the White House again!  We have an amazing leader in Obama but the Democrats are not using the GIFTS they have been given: Bush, Cheney, Bush's approval rating, the economy, foreclosures, the WAR, the real John McCain, I can go on forever!  If the Democrats don't win the White House in this election they never will!  In this visual world, the visuals at the convention are BORING!  Obama had us at Hello and the Democrats are just saying goodbye... unless they start fighting for US.  Unfortunately in this world of politics nice guys don't always win!  Yes Michelle, Teddy and Hillary had great speeches but you can't swing independents when you only have one good speech a night, they must be starting to tune out because I sure am!
You are all "wright" when you say obama did not steal the nomination.  He played within the Party's established rules to manipulate the pledge delegate count to over-rule the will of the people.(caucus)
That's fine. That's fair.. I guess.
But, you all need to remember those same rules insist that the Super Delegates vote for the BEST and MOST VIABLE candidate.  The Supers are the final say in all of this.  NEITHER CANDIDATE can capture the nomination without votes from Supers. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
Casey Jr.  was very strong and well spoken.
Hillary was UNBELIEVABLE!
I am anxious to see Joe Biden tear him a new one Wednesday night.  For too long McCain has draped himself in the flag over his Hanoi Hilton years with no mention of his sub-par performance as a Naval Aviator. He did crash 5 planes didn't he? He did give the North Vietnamese information that led to the downing of a U.S. fighter plane and the death of it's pilot, right?  He was a member of the Keating Five too, wasn't he?  I was actually surprised to hear HRC call him a friend after the joke he made at Chelsea's expense years ago, but then again I'm not as forgiving as her.  McCain is a dirtbag and a phony who only cares about one person, John McCain.  I hope someone tears the cover off this wolf in sheep's clothing and soon.
I hope this is the kind of riot that intollerant, hate-mongering, jack-booted clown Rush Limbaugh wanted!  'Cause this is what we're REALLY about.

We welcome our HRC sisters and brothers!... because this time, it's too important to let your G.O.P-evil continue unchecked.

Obama '08!...  you lose heir Limbaugh!
The keynote speaker,Gov Warner presented lots of ideas but it was Hillary who delivered the homerun on the 2nd night.  Although it was addressed to the women supported to keep on going, it was also justification for all democrats to unite for Obama.  In a subtle way, Obama must be thinking for his botched opportunity in not vetting for Hillary as his running mate.  He thinks he could win the election w/o the help of the Clintons and yet he chose a guy who has been in Washington since 1972, so he contradicted himself on Change.  He himself is a Washington product.  Secondly, this speech was addressed to all Hillary haters both from within the right or the left. Don't count the Clintons out in any political fight.  They'll be back in 2012.
Well, they sure nailed his butt to the wall.  Ouch!
I can only imagine how harsh the Repubs will be in return.  Entertaining, so say the least. Janet Napolitano cracked me up,  What a hoot!
And Jennifer Granholm's, serious comments were spot on the mark.  You go girls!  Perhaps a Pres/VP ticket later on?  Hmmm . . .?  Come on, think about it. . .

Obama/Biden 08
Michelle definitely showed her dislike for Hillary tonight she looked all puffed up the whole time Hillary was speaking, I wonder if she is the reason that Obama didnt select Hillary as his running mate. does she not realize the cameras are on her? she should have shown more support for Hillary! It looked terrible, I have already had friends calling me in regard to the hateful look Michelle had on her face the whole time.
I thought Nora ODonell had a bit of maturity; guess I was wrong.  All night she kept crying out for red meat.  I even heard "when are they going to GUT McCain?"  Wow!  Did I notice a bias there?
What a pathetic way to analyse a convention; especially since you didn't actually show any of it.
Great to see that finally people are talking about the real policy differences in these candidates! I've read BArack's policies in detail from his website. He has a real PLAN on how to address the energy crisis, for example, and transition to alternative fuels. I don't want to see my 16 year old son be in his 40's and thrown back to the stone age. Even the Artic only has enough fuel, they've said to last 60 years. And THEN what? Yes, Obama's plan will take some sacrifices! If my parents could ration gas, and food and steel during WWII, and if generations of Americans could work to make this country better, then we can, too! Obama asks Americans to work to get ahead, and doesn't just offer handouts or pretty promises to get elected. The American dream was EARNED, and I'm hoping that AMericans wake up and elect him before another 4 years of handouts to the rich and the lobbyists sends us further down a road that we may not be able to return from...
Talk about a focus on bringing down your opponent.  We didn't hear anything about Obama's vision for the future, just the same tired old retoric.  The only exception was Va Gov. Warner.  The strategy for the Democrats has been to obstruct progress, tear down Republicans and create caos in order to "take back the White House and Congress".  The last two times the Dem's had all three house was under Carter.  Do we really want 4 years of Carter (without his ethics)?  BO does not have the experience to be president, does not have a vision for America (perhaps a hidden agenda though) and is very self-serving.  We need a real American hero.  We need McCain (with Romney for the economics).  McCain/Romney 2008
John McCain is more of the same!
Hillary was my candidtate.  I will always be proud to have supported the first woman who almost cracked the ceiling.  Her great speech made me cry and it made me that much more proud to be a woman, and a Democrat.  I bet that Michelle Obama would have voted for her if her husband were not running.  She was certainly the intelligent woman's candidate.
I will, of course, vote for Obama.  This country has a chance to repair the image that Bush damaged so much with his C average, boot stompin', line in the sand attitude.
I heard that statement "Your jobs are gone and they are not coming back" and I was waiting for McCain to come up with some hope for them like finding creative ways to  bring in more jobs. Does he really care?  I think he should go away and not come back.
Woo-hoo!  Hillary is getting sooo many small donations tonight---lots of bloggers are donating.

WHERE can i get a COUNTDOWN TO CHANGE T-shirt???? i was watching Keith waaaaay back when (& writing props to him to msnbc) & i would looooove a t-shirt.

The whole Obama campaign seems to be don't ask how just beleive, have bling faith in Obama.

The facts just don't add up.Not that anyone would question a junior sentator. To beleive in the secret plan or no plan, and rely on the hope over speech is not enough.
I have always chosen NBC and MSNBC as my first news source. Frankly, the past two nights (Convention Coverage)I have been disappointed. I saw two speeches in their entirety on MSNBC, however there are 10-15 speakers each night. I flipped over to C-Span to be able to see Gov. Sebelius's speech, I then watched Gov. Sweitzer and Gov Patrick all give powerful and inspiring "McCain bashing" speeches. All the while MSNBC was still debating what Hillary should or will say in her speech and how the Dems should "get tough on McCain". Please give some of these 7-10 minute speeches more air-time, many of them are as good (if not better) than the key-note speeches have been, they certainly give a better and broader picture of  this historical convention.
It's time. It's time for us to move into the future. Obama 08. I can't wait to see what he's got cooked up for Thursday at the convention's close.  It's funny because I bet the McSame  camp is going to say something to knock it. What's also funny is how they can't hold a candle to Barack and all they can do to try and tarnish the man is to attack him for his popularity. Everything they do is merely a reaction to something Obama's done. So if that's the case, you tell me who has the stronger campaign... Because if you are always worrying about what someone else is doing, and try to stay in their business...thats what we like to call a follower...not a leader...
Now, someone please convince me that McSame has taken the reigns away from the Obamanator.
Stop hating and that man and let him shine...
Dogs bark at the moon...but the moon just sits there and shines... Eventually that dog will stop it's barking and admire how the moon shines....So...let the moon shine dog, let it shine.
Most of these speakers were flat in their delivery. After listening to Kathleen Sebelius I'm glad Obama didn't pick her for VP. Boring. I might have joined the Hillary supporters in their revolt.
One of the best speakers, I thought, was Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer. Good points with an entertaining delivery. Reminded me a bit of Frank Caliendo.
Not to mention that he is pandering to the extreme right for votes. Perhaps the most important legacy of the next president will be the appointment of Supreme Court Justices- 1,2,3, more?  Now that is scary
I will write in Hillary as she proved in her speech that she is the most presidential of any of the candidates.  I cannot vote for a flip-flop in an empty suit. Sorry, no sale here folks on Barry.
"And the only thing that he'll recycle is the same failed George Bush approach to energy policy." "
Funny, same policy Obama supported and McCain opposed.
This may be off topic, but I just want to give a huge shout out to Kathleen Sibelius... I watched her interview on the floor of the convention and she handled a barage of questions about all things Hillary Clinton and answered with quite impressive clarity and deftness, not missing a single opportunity to unify the dem party, support the nominee, and speak the tough truth about the bush/mccain ticket.  Impressive!
Finally, the Dems attack the McBush machine! The networks aren't showing the early evening speakers, who have carried the water for their campaign, so far. Hopefully, when Bill and Joe speak tomorrow, they will bring the contrast between Barak and McBush into clearer contrast in prime time.
Watch the Ad the the MSM does not want you to see about Barack Obama.

We need to learn how to spell.  The Governor's name in New York is not Peterson, it is Paterson. Just because this is internet reporting, it should still be correct.

http://www.ny.gov/governor/
The above article makes me sick--the Democrats are
really panicking, are pumping out bigger lies than
usual. They are shoveling out " horse-pucky ". The
scary thing is, how many politically ignorant people
are going to fall for it. FYI:It will be a cold day
(you know where!) before Obama and Biden will bring
back manufacturing jobs to Michigan or any place else!
Why would Obama have to promise health care for all Americans? Isnt that what Bill Clinton promised? Wasnt that achieved? You mean Bil and Hillary didnt get the job done? Ill bet they were busy stopping companies from sending jobs overseas.Probably busy making sure all of the world loved America. Were you reporters not there for the Clintons campaign and Administration? Give me a break. You guys better head out to Holly Wonderful with the rest of jerks.
Brava Hillary........

No way
No how
NO MCCAIN

that is the next bumper sticker
WOW
I have a couple of words for Mr. McCain, Too Old
Very surprising to see Keith Olbermann grunt like a pig whenever any good complement is made about Obama. It is very obvious the side he now stands for while pretending to blast the other side.Funny to see a guy that was authentic during the primaries become such a buffoon.I encourage him to maintain that brand by chanelling his services to FOX News.Obama`s good nature of treating individual`s with dignity and respect tend to potray him as weak but sound minds can read in between lines and ignore that perceived weakness.Obama has good qualities which Biden can complement with experience.Normskulls like Olbermann should be REAL for the candidate of his choice and not pretend to be a chameleon that can`t even morph into another colour.
This is a good start. Unleash Biden!
What an incredible speech and woman. ! I have NEVER been as moved as I was listening to her last night. I have been a Hillary Supporter from the start and I will ALWAYS be a supporter of hers. for almost 10 mins she stood before that crowd of her supporters and and listened to their thunderous applause. She spoke so eloquently and strong, and such passion for the American people, You could feel her love-and passion for us and this country. That is the only woman to ever move people the she can ONLY do ! This morning I am still covered with goose bumps just thinking about her and that speech.
Why can't Obama have a 1/10 of her passion and drive. He just doesn't have that passion the reaches out to you like she does. The pride that was beaming in Bill's eyes was so true and heart felt. I even was moved to tears, and for a man that is hard to do.  Obama just doesn't  have that heart felt passion. I just hope and pray that she can forgive and run again. I pray with all my sole that last night wasn't her swan song as has been reported. If there ever was a President, folks you saw her last night. I bet Howard Dean is just sick today, realizing they put the wrong person up in this election. It saddens me to know that we will have to endure four more years, before ( and I pray she will ) she will run again.
I have never been so moved and so energized by a person as I am with her. Obama will never be able to give a speech like that. Hillary we love you more now than ever before. Last night you gave the largest part of your soul and put in the hands of obama. That was the greatest show of courage anyone could done. To know that you should be accepting that nomination not obama and to be so graceful and polite as you watch your and our dreams slip away.  We THANK YOU SENATOR CLINTON! we the American people owe you a debt of gratitude. Your vision will live on and we not forget you ! May God bless and watch over you till you take your rightful place as our PRESIDENT
LET'S VOTE BARACK OBAMA TO THE PRESIDENTIAL OFFICE. HE IS ONE OF US WHO FEELS THE PAIN OF THE COMMON PEOPLE.  WE NEED HIM TO STEER THE COUNTRY FROM THE FAILED POLICIES OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION.  MCCAIN IS A CLONE OF BUSH, SO WE CANNOT EXPECT HIM TO MAKE THE COUNTRY BETTER LIKE IN THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION.
I think the best part about the attacks tonight was the humor. I think that will really connect with people who aren't political junkies.
NO MORE MCCAIN. VOTING FOR JOHN MCCAIN MEANS MORE SUFFERING FOR THE COUNTRY.  WE CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE BUSH'S SIDEKICK TO RULE THE U.S.  WE HAD HAD ENOUGH OF
THIS ADMINISTRATION'S MISMANAGEMENT OF THE GOVERNMENT.
LET'S VOTE FOR OBAMA AND BIDEN SO WE'LL HAVE NEW HOPE. NEW LIFE AND NEW BEGINNINGS.
Who was that Hilliar warm up act from Montana - wow. Let's hear more from people like him. A real person, with a real sense of humor, and a real Democrat. An if you missed Kucinich, find his speech - it too was a wowzer.
