Reviews of Day 2: Praise for HRC's speech

Posted: Wednesday, August 27, 2008 9:34 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Washington Post’s Balz writes, "Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton roused the Democratic National Convention here Tuesday night with sharp criticism of Sen. John McCain and a full-throated endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama ... urging Democrats to put the long and bitter primary battle behind them and unite to take back the White House in November.

But you think this will make some in the Obama campaign happy? “At the same time, advisers said, Mrs. Clinton wanted to ensure that her star turn at the convention could never be portrayed as insufficiently enthusiastic, should Mr. Obama lose the election in part because swaths of her supporters ultimately did not vote for him. Mrs. Clinton is almost certain to run for president in 2012 if Mr. Obama fails this time, several Clinton advisers said Tuesday, and any such plan could possibly founder if the Clintons’ negative feelings show through this year.”

The AP’s Ron Fournier writes, “By the time she was done, Sen. Clinton had delivered a strong, convincing affirmation of Obama and, just as importantly, a thumping of McCain. She did her part. Her husband takes the stage Wednesday and then Obama must make his case to the American people that he will be ready on Day One.” More: “Clinton seemed to say, even if Obama is everything she said during the campaign, he's still a better man than McCain. The speech was as much of an attack on McCain as it was an embrace of Obama. ‘We don't need four more years of the last eight years,’ she said.”

The Boston Globe calls Clinton's speech an "impassioned call for unity." "In an address closely scrutinized for perceived slights against Obama, Clinton threw herself fully behind the man she battled and often criticized during a long and at times bitter primary campaign."

Peter Canellos: "This was a Clinton speech that didn't require any parsing of words. In a fiery call to arms last night, Hillary Clinton tried to clear up the one thing that hadn't been clear before: Her level of enthusiasm for making Barack Obama president. In past speeches, she has offered sincere endorsements of Obama, but then gone on to extol the accomplishments of her own campaign. This time, perhaps sensing a greater urgency, she offered repeated appeals on Obama's behalf."

The New York Post puts Clinton on the cover, calls her: "Bam Ma'am."

The New York Daily News' cover: "Heal-ary!"

"Obama on Tuesday applauded and cheered former rival Hillary Rodham Clinton as she declared her support for his candidacy, and urged her own backers to rally behind Obama in his contest with Republican John McCain. 'She did a great job. I think she made the case for why we're going to be unified in November and why we're going to win this election. She was outstanding,' Obama said after Clinton addressed delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Denver."

Biden said that Hillary Clinton delivered a "tremendous" speech last night, saying that the party will be united. "She knocked it out of the park," Biden said when asked by NBC's Andrea Mitchell about Clinton's message. "This is a unified party. This is a unified convention." Biden said he spoke with his colleague from New York for 20 minutes tonight, but didn't elaborate on what the two discussed.

The presumptive Democratic veep made the comments as he took his first look at the convention floor from the podium in preparation for his speech tonight. He has no public events scheduled Wednesday, saying that his speech is "almost done."

The AP fact-checks some of the Democratic speeches, including this applauded one-liner from Clinton: "And in 2008, he (McCain) still thinks it's OK when women don't earn equal pay for equal work." "THE FACTS: In April, Senate Republicans killed legislation aimed at removing limits on how long workers can wait before suing their employers for pay discrimination. The bill was designed to address a Supreme Court decision that threw out a discrimination case brought by an Alabama woman. McCain said he opposed the measure because it would lead to more lawsuits, although he was campaigning that day and did not vote."

With his jaw clenched and eyes welled up with tears, the expression on Bill Clinton's face told more then a thousand stump speeches ever could, NBC’s Louis Burgdorf observed.

Obama is a talker...not a leader.

Hillary's speech was powerful and beautiful.
Gracious lady and fantastic speech.  She held up her end and urged her supporters to back Senator Obama for the good of ALL people.  I watched with trepidation thinking her body language would give her true feelings away.  But her carefully worded speech was all about party unity and the fact that we have to take back the WH with no compromises.  Here's hoping Bill Clinton takes her lead with his speech tonight.
I really enjoyed this article, and the parts of Mrs.Clinton's speech that I did hear. I believe with another speech like the one Mrs.Clinton gave last night Mr.McCain can throw in the towel!!
Clearly, the wrong person was nominated.

Hillary/Warner 2012!
I was truly impressed with Hillary's speech last night.  I think my favorite line was when she asked her supporters if they were only in it for her.  An artfully and tactfully well done job at shaming the most recalcitrant and disappointed of her supporters to now turn their support to Barack Obama, not the enemy "Bush Hugger" McCain.

Geez can't the DNC afford any janitors?  Yesterday I saw this big piece of garbage on the floor and it was on tv, Mitt Romney.  And why was Sissy Chris Matthews even talking to him?  And today I saw another huge piece of garbage on MSNBC tv, Rudi Guiliani.  Well ofcourse the Moronic Jerk would put that garbage on his garbage show.

Chuck Todd gave some very insightful commentary last night.  Why on earth does the Moronic Jerk have any time on MSNBC tv and Chuck Todd has to get his time on air by being a guest of someone else?  I say give Chuck Todd the morning show so all us liberals can watch MSNBC tv in the morning without puking our guts out before we switch the channel.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
As I began to listen to her speech, it reminded me of when she first started running for the office of the president.  I do believe that if she could have kept her bid clean such as last night, there would be no doubt she would be president or at least V.P.... I do believe that she will make as excellent Sec. of State......She will do well wherever she serves....You did good Hillary, You did good...my hat's off to you!!!
I thought Senator Clinton delivered a masterful speech. Very strong - very strong - No way, no how, no McCain - Awesome!
i was a delagatefor obama but changing my vote to mccain obama said running for changewhere change now still clinton crap she lost and yet still more same if obama going be same then guess ill vote for same guess one more vote to mccain
This is for Mika on Morning Joe:

Does your role on the show include providing the audience with some balance to the rightwing views of Joe S. and Pat B.?  If so, you do a lousy job of it.

Can you get a backbone and come up with counterpoints other than "oh gosh" or "we'll have to investigate that" or today's pathetic comments after Joe's and Pat's views about Hillary's speech "well I hate to admit it but I think I agree."

Give us some intelligent counterpoints or just stick to drinking coffee, checking your Blackberry, and doing the news.
Tell all this to your buddy Joe Scarborough.  He and Mika (and of course Patty Buchanan) really didn't think she pulled it off...

I am launching a new game (and a new chant for the convention).  Please feel free to add on:

1.  "Jon McCain claims to be a Republican who understands the risks of global warming so you would think he would have an energy policy other than 'drill, drill, drill.', BUT ...... John McCain doesn't care!"

2.  "John McCain is a veteran so you would think he would have supported Jim Webb's new GI Bill of Rights, BUT ...... John McCain doesn't care!"

3.  John McCain says he understands the horrors of war so you would think he would have demanded irrefutable evidence of Saddam's threat, BUT ...... John McCain doesn't care!"

4.  "John McCain wanted more American troops in Iraq to quell the violence.  After all their sacrifices, you would think he would at least expect the Iraqis to pass the laws needed to unite their country, BUT ...... John McCain doesn't care!"

5.  "John McCain helped pass McCain-Feingold so you would think he would not have a campaign run by lobbyists, BUT ...... John McCain doesn't care!"

BUT John McCain does care about one thing: getting elected!

Join in the fun!
Typical msnbc; you all love "obama ary" no matter what they say.  Yes she said she was for Obama but never said why other than she did likes McCain.  In fact she said nothing about Obama himself ... it was all about Hilary and the coverage was all about Bill.  Now we know why she lost !
As an Obama supporter I was thrilled with Hillary Clinton last night.  A fabulous speech by an amazing woman.  Let's hope Bill can do half as good.
Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain Please listen to this video about this Scum Bag Traitor.

I thought it was interesting to flip around and see reactions to the speech.  Msnbc was awed and fawning, CNN had a commercial ad (as usual) and on Fox, Bill Kristolnacht was saying that the speech was "shockingly" unenthusiastic.  Different points of view, depending on whose ax you have to grind.
Hillary was great with the "unity" and all. Rendell, Casey, Warren and a couple of others let McSruge have it. I forget his name but the guy that yelled out "the people in the cheap seats stand up" was awsome. But I really can't wait to see Biden and Bill tonight.

This week has been very touching and emotional for me watching the convention on C span. This year the little people have voices and are willing to tell their stories of hardship and that is magnificant. Boy, I wish I was there live with them.

Did you guys see Mittens getting the hell out of dodge at the end? hahahahaha it was so funny.
ON other sites they are still posting aggressively negative statements by  a sizeable "minority" of the Hillary supporters with a range from apathy to deep resentment. It might be the media stirring the pot but I have a suspicion what it would take to bring out healing might be if Hillary could take responsibility for the distortions, can I say lying misrepresentations and Rovian tactics used in the primary even if they just called them inflamed feelings carried us all a way. A mea culpa so to speak, but unfortunately she has always seemed to have immense difficulty taking responsibility for any mistakes or errors (probably afraid to look "weak"), but to not admit that this lingering mistrust and resentment towards Obama was deliberately cultivated by the Clinton campaign is disingenuous at best. She gave a fantastic speech, I just don't think it will shift the opinion of her supporters that she attracted by playing the victim and weak little woman in an unfair world cards. She knew what she was doing when she compared herself to McCain as being "ready" while she charged that Obama was not. Personally its hard for me as an 58 year old woman to really "get" why anyone would buy what she was peddling back there in the primary. That said, I think the primary process changed and strengthened her and her convictions of why she is doing what she is doing, and I wish her the best.
Senator Clinton NAILED it last night!  Outstanding speech!

She did not campaign these last 18 months to see John McCain get elected.  What a shame that folks like Bobbi in Eau Claire seem to have missed the message.

Did you do it for Hillary or did you do it for the people she's fighting for?

If you did it for Hillary you missed the point.

If you did it for the people she's fighting for then you're giving all of them a great big "F YOU" by even thinking of voting for John McCain.

No way.

No how.

No McCain!
Senator Clinton- A class act to be sure. I want her supporters to know that I for one feel like she is a lady of her word and she means what she says. We must defeat the GOP this year, our very lives depend on it.
If you have a job be grateful, if your kids are going to a decent school be grateful, If your familey is covered by health insurance be grateful, If you can afford your house payments thank God. We wont get another chance, if any of you think that by waiting for 2012 we will be able to catch up you are wrong.   The last 4 years has taken a huge toll on this wonderful country another 4 years will see disaster
that we can only imagine.

Obama/Biden
Is the rumor true that Republicans wanting change the direction the country is headed have started an organization called REVO -- Republicans Voting Obama?
it was going to take a very inspired, passionate speech to top Michelle's speech from the night before.

Clinton delivered, and the Obama camp set it up so that her speech could be the highlight of the convention.  There was not a word wasted in her delivery, and there was no room left for interpretation.

the McCain camp is reaching when they say that she didn't endorse Obama's ability to be commander in chief.  she stated that he was the only one who would be able to lead our troops out of Iraq responsibly.  if that isn't a vote of confidence in his abilities as CiC then i don't know what is.

Great Job HRC!  you've made this HRC hater a fan!
Hmmmmmm,If this convention is going so well why does McCain end up leading in the polls.Uh Oh Could it be the more we get to know Barry the less we like him.Heee hee heeee
With leaks from her staff about 2012, how genuine was the speech? With this attitude, whether hers, her staff, or her supporters, if Obama loses, it will be on her and her husband's head.

Doesn't she get that she can gain more power working in the Senate or on the Supreme Court than by being president?

Hell, she'd make a perfect Attorney General, one who would uphold the Constitution and get things done.

It is sad for this country if she can't let this go.
Hmmmmmm,If this convention is going so well why does McCain end up leading in the polls.Uh Oh Could it be the more we get to know Barry the less we like him.Heee hee heeee
Would you please stop relaying everying Ron Fournier has to say?  He is a McCain hack who should have just taken the job McCain offered him instead of using the AP to spread McCain lies.

No doubt McCain offered him the Press Secretary position, ala Tony Snow, if he gave McCain positive press during the campaign.
"The bill was designed to address a Supreme Court decision that threw out a discrimination case brought by an Alabama woman."

That was a lulu of a Supreme court decision which goes to prove that Bush's bad appointments have hurt the country and that more bad appointments will kill justice in this country.  There is more at stake than just abortion rights.

The court threw out the woman's lawsuit because they said she should have filed when she started receiving less pay than her male counterpart instead of waiting until she actually found out about it.  Apparently you can only file suit if you have supernatural powers. This is the result of court appointees who put faith and ideology above reality based decisions.
FR ---- The Boston Globe calls Clinton's speech an "impassioned call for unity."

What speech were they watching? Hillary's speech was her kickoff for a run at the presidency in 2012.
Thank you, ma'am.
One surely hopes she understands the need, should she run for president again, to surround herself with different staffers.

Those enthusiastic though foolish words about her running in 2012 may well be what denies her the nomination next time, should Obama not win this time.
I think it was a great speech.
I guess I live on another planet than moron Joe and "giggle" mika.  what were they watching last night when Hillary spoke???? or more like it - what were they smoking????  when oh when will msnbc get rid of these partisan hacks in the morning???? and    and please - don't get me started on Pat Puckhannon.
Bill was very proud of Hillary, and I enjoyed seeing it.
It was  also good to watch the respect for her from Joe and Michele.
She gave a great speach, perhaps her best ever.
Owl
Hillary should get a grip on her ex campaign staff and teach them some message discipline.  It's way past time for these whiners to learn to shut their ignorant traps about 2012 and focus on the real problem at hand, winning now in 2008.  If Hillary does run again she should get really smart and never rehire any of the losers who screwed up her campaign with their lame brains and loose lips.  Hillary couldn't have picked a bigger group of losers for her campaign staff and hopefully she'll learn from her mistake if there's a next time around.

Time for Unity and for her crowd to get with her program of party unity.  Hillary has shown real class in her recent enthusiastic support of Obama, now her staff of sore losers needs to suck it up and show similar class if they have any at all.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
I guess I live on another planet than moron Joe and "giggle" mika.  what were they watching last night when Hillary spoke???? or more like it - what were they smoking????  when oh when will msnbc get rid of these partisan hacks in the morning???? and    and please - don't get me started on Pat Pukehannon.
She did offer a fantastic speech..Jon Stewart gave the best handling of the PUMAs last night on the Daily Show.
Hillary supporters that are eager to brush aside her plea last night and vote for McCain in a "me, myself & I" tantrum, need to "Wake Up" and read "The Way of the World" by Ron Suskind before they vote.  It's time to get real about what is happening in the world today and vote responsibly.  Sour grapes will not save our country, and without our country, there can never be a female President.
What an incredible speech and woman. ! I have NEVER been as moved as I was listening to her last night. I have been a Hillary Supporter from the start and I will ALWAYS be a supporter of hers. for almost 10 mins she stood before that crowd of her supporters and and listened to their thunderous applause. She spoke so eloquently and strong, and such passion for the American people, You could feel her love-and passion for us and this country. That is the only woman to ever move people the she can ONLY do ! This morning I am still covered with goose bumps just thinking about her and that speech.
Why can't Obama have a 1/10 of her passion and drive. He just doesn't have that passion the reaches out to you like she does. The pride that was beaming in Bill's eyes was so true and heart felt. I even was moved to tears, and for a man that is hard to do.  Obama just doesn't  have that heart felt passion. I just hope and pray that she can forgive and run again. I pray with all my sole that last night wasn't her swan song as has been reported. If there ever was a President, folks you saw her last night. I bet Howard Dean is just sick today, realizing they put the wrong person up in this election. It saddens me to know that we will have to endure four more years, before ( and I pray she will ) she will run again.
I have never been so moved and so energized by a person as I am with her. Obama will never be able to give a speech like that. Hillary we love you more now than ever before. Last night you gave the largest part of your soul and put in the hands of obama. That was the greatest show of courage anyone could done. To know that you should be accepting that nomination not obama and to be so graceful and polite as you watch your and our dreams slip away.  We THANK YOU SENATOR CLINTON! we the American people owe you a debt of gratitude. Your vision will live on and we not forget you ! May God bless and watch over you till you take your rightful place as our PRESIDENT
A few observers noted that Hillary praised Obie only generically as the Democratic alternative to the Republicans, not in specifics relating to his character or ability.
As a strong supporter of Sen Obama from the start - and not really a fan of Sen Clinton; I think Sen Clinton did a really wonderful job.  She was strong, graceful, classy, forceful.  I have newfound respect for this woman.  This could not have been an easy thing for her under the circumstances.  To all of her supporters:  I hope you take her remarks to heart and really think about what she said.  Please, as intelligent forward thinking people - THINK!

Sen Clinton - all respect and thanks to you.

Obama/Biden 08
It was an awesome speech, expertly delivered.  It showed why HRC was an outstanding candidate in the first place and made clear that this season she's ready to apply those skills for the good of the party and the nation.
I am an ardent Obama supporter and someone that was livid with a large number of the comments made by Hillary during the primary. Last night, I thought she did all she could do and I found myself applauding several times during her speech. I just hope those that say they are Hillary supporters and democrats will do what is right for this country.

I'm not holding my breathe that they will come out and say so because if they did that they would be ignored by the media.  Did you lot ever think about that. By being stubborn, having tantrums, and behaving like morons is what gets them on TV.
Hillary's speech not only was uniting but left a legacy speech which she can use in sound bites in the future run for first Woman President of the United States.  It was not falsely 'Obama and I are best friends' rhetoric, but rather a plea for uniting the Demo party to defeat the Republicans and their legacy of diminishing human rights, warmonging, not promoting universal health care and most important a party of the elite, wealthy and greedy!
Please First Read, begin every post with  "Washington Post’s Balz writes."

Heckuva speech last night. Can't wait to see Bill's Act II.

To Hillary supporters who plan to vote for McCain:

Would you really betray Hillary this way?  Would you make yourself Hillary's enemy by throwing your support to her adversary?

You don't really want to divorce yourselves from her so completely, do you?

You all know what is right, please just do it.

O'Bama '08
No, the speech did not make this Obama  supporter happy at all; not when her husband and supporters, James Carville and Slick Eddy Rendell are up there throwing mud at Obama and the convention. Not when her aide  stirs the pot by telling us how disrespectd she was for not being vetted for VP, not when her aide tells her supporters that she will indeed run ( what a shock) in 2012 if Obama does not win this time.
Having watched Democrats give away elections to the Repubicans when unable to unite for one candidate, I am hopeful that Hillary's enthusiastic endorsement of Obama's policies vs McCain's policies will bring us to the point we all actively support Obama. No matter her motivation, her emphasis on how much we need Democratic leadership is sorely needed. Yes, I attended my precinct causcus as a Hillary supporter, but we need to keep focused on how desperatey we need Democratic leadership.
HOW LONG WILL OBAMA KEEP WANTING HILLARY TO PROP HIM UP?..ONE OF THES DAYS HE HAS TO START SHOWING HE IS CAPABLE OF STANDING ON HIS OWN TWO FEET.  HE SEEMS TO DEPEND ON HILLARY TO HOLD HIM ON HER KNEE AND FEED HIM HIS PABLUM!!!
Wonderful speech. As much as I like Hillary her speech has done nothing to persuade me to vote for Obama. Her speech maximizes what Obama is missing: clarity of message, & why voters like me can connect with him. Hillary is not running for president, Obama is and is unqualified for thepoosition.
I found it strange that when Hillary started her speech, she mentioned being a proud mother, a proud senator, a proud Democrat, etc., but she never mentioned being a proud wife. I think Bill was waiting desperately to hear that.
