Axelrod previews Obama's speech

Posted: Wednesday, August 27, 2008 9:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
IN THE SKY OVER COLORADO (Earlier) -- Campaign chief strategist David Axelrod gave reporters a preview of the speech Obama will give Thursday night at Invesco Field.

"The speech is substantially written but as with all Obama speeches, he'll be refining it and buffing it up and working on it, I'm sure, right until the very end," Axelrod said during a briefing near the end of the flight from Montana to Denver today.

Obama began thinking about tomorrow's speech during his vacation in Hawaii, and had been the chief writer, crafting a first draft and then working with others, including speechwriter Jon Favreau.

"[Obama's] the best speechwriter in the group, and he knows what he wants to say and he feels strongly about that," said Axelrod, who explained that the senator usually writes a draft in long-hand and then types it into his computer.

He said the speech would lay out the case for change and set the stakes in the election. Obama will talk about "the risks of continuing down the road we're on, which is plainly what Sen. McCain is offering. And he's gonna talk about an alternative path that's rooted in the best of what this country is and the kind of future that we can build if we take it."

Obama's goal is to talk to the American people directly about the challenges the country faces what it is gonna take to solve them, Axelrod said, adding that he would not shy away from drawing contrasts with John McCain on such issues as the economy and foreign policy.

Axelrod's response to the McCain campaign's criticism of the Democratic convention as a celebrity phenomenon suggested he felt the Republican did not have standing to make such remarks. "I know that Sen. McCain and his people are shooting barbs about the opulence of our convention from the mountaintop in Sedona at the McCain estate," he said. "I don't think that warrants a response."

He could not say how long the speech would be, because it was still being edited and said that while Obama was grateful to Hillary Clinton for her support and her strong speech, he did not know whether the senator would talk about his former rival on Thursday.

Axelrod said the speeches by Bill Clinton in 1992, Ronald Reagan in 1980, and John F. Kennedy in 1960 had "particular interest" for Obama as he searched for inspiration. And he repeated a comment Obama made earlier in the week -- that this speech would not be like the one he delivered in 2004 when he was new to the national stage.

Obama will be speaking on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, but Axelrod would not say whether the senator would make any reference to that historic address.

I cannot wait!  One of my friends in Denver just called to say she got a ticket for tomorrow night - I am jealous!

Come on, Charels (is that really how you spell it?) Of course not MILLIONS, no poll captures MILLIONS of opinions.  Usually it is about 1,000 or so people.  I am merely pointing out that many who were potential LIKELY voters – weren’t there to answer the phone.  Come on, play nice.
Its going to be optimistic.

Obama 297, McCain 241

Shame on MSNBC who obviously feel that their voices are more important then hearing those of our VETS by not showing the film tribute to US Vertans made for the Democratic Convention by Stephen Spielberg. SHAME!
Yes We Can!

No way, No How, No McCain!

Obama is going to amaze everyone with his speech.  The man has charisma just like Bill and I cannot wait to vote for him in November.
Finally! I cannot wait. Rushing out to buy popcorn for the best show in town.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, Hope, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, Change,  blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, vote for me,  blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Obama, we all know how passionate your are about change. If I may suggest please, when you stick to the old geezer; make sure it’s in terminology McCain can understand.   I mean simple English.  SOMETHING LIKE IT’S OVER. You may need to repeat it; since McCain doesn’t get it. Maybe you could use Sashia and Malia’s vocabulary so he can comprehend. McCain/Bush/Rove and Cheney all need to know it’s over.
=================================================
Bill was enormous tonight. He gave that feeble brain of McCain something to be afraid about. I was enamored by his southern drawl and witty common sense. Couple Bill’s unabashed  thrusts of McCain and Bill’s  pointed finger at McCain, McCain  I hope, should have sense enough to know the American public is angry.
It’s good to see you back to your brilliant self. I was so happy to see you. I could hardly curb my enthusiasm.
Yes we can.
Yes we can.
No way
No how
No McCain!
Nobody but Obama
Obama/Biden 08/12

The Clintons are being used badly by Barack Obama for his own ends to win the Presidency. THe bad thing about it is Bill and Hillary are being stupid enough to let themselves be used, i voted for Hillary innthe primary and there is no way I will vote for the racist, marxist Obama.  I am voting for Mccain. Go to the site of the National Black Republican Association. This is a group of black republicans who say Barack Obama is not the example they want for a fist black man for President (and he is NOT BLACK he is half white, half black, and part Arab for you stupid blacks who think he is African American). This black Republican party is even saying that Obama is backed by Reverend Wright  and the stupud cult church he belonged to that preaches marxism and racism. They say this church tries to get blacks dependent on the government which is what Barack will do to the people of this country. For all you gullible, gullible, people falling for Barack, this is reminicent of Adolph Hitler when the Germans fell for Hitler. Hitler was part Jewish and hated his own Jewish background. Look what he did to the Jews.  Hitler is exactly what Barack is reminding many people of. Ther are many black political people I would vote for in a second for President. But not this comuunistic racist jerk. Wake up, America before it is too late. Barack Obama is the most dangerous man to ever run for President of the United States.
It's a colossal tragedy that ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, NBC and MSNBC feel they are obliged to birage us with non-stop punditry, analysis and narcisstic arrogance during the entire Democratic Convention.
I don't object to some commentary. It's sometimes helpful and often amusing...but what we saw on all the major and cable news networks was WAY over the top and amounted to what can only be called TOTAL CRAP and a disservice to all those who tuned in to listen and learn. What we saw on MSNBC and the rest was The Clinton(Drama) Convention...what we saw on C-SPAN was the Democratic Convention!
I felt like I was watching a repeat of 1992, 1996, 2000, and 1996. Can Bill ever come up with something new. His speach almost dictated to to tee what he said in 1992, declaring the fact that we should go back to the debiacle 1990's not me. Until tonite I was looking for a new change with Obama, but after tonite I believe Mccain will be our next President
The problem with the convention is I'm hearing too much of "the Good old Times" when the democrats owned the White house. Both me and by far most of our university don't want to look backwards but forwards. We tallied a poll last bight and out of  the 10, 000 polled, less than 500 opted for Obama. Thats a 50% loss than before the convention started. Maybe he can run again w/ Clinton in 2012 I guess
This will be the most important day for the rial American People.
After watching the Biden speech tonight, and the reaction from all...  Michelle, Jill, Barack, and the entire family, I am just a very proud American...

I'm also proud of Hill & Bill...  They handled this with grace and stature...

The line that really got me?  When Beau said the 'three of them' married Jill...  Awesome...
I could seriously come up with the same soundbites. Lets be realistic, and see what he comes up with . Everything promised ...but there atr few who can actually get something done.
So far Obama working on his speech has Hope over Fear.

(I need some help what else do I need to say? I love America, share family values, oh instead of getting into any policies keep that will scare America keep that agenda secret, put in some yes we can, beleive,
you know some lines from the book think and grow rich jsut give them the pump come together oh and mention some famous people I can quote.)

I will not be swift boated, I have the unsinkable Titanic
Blanche, how republican of you!
Bill was great!

I was especially interested in his interaction with Nancy Pelosi afterwards...cold to say the least.

Then to see Nancy with Barak was even more telling. There is no doubt that he is the nominee because of her hate for Bill (and Hillary). To see her pointing to people that he seemingly needed to talk with reminded me of what I do with my 9 year old son.

I don't blame Barak...none the less it is very telling.
Come on stop the BS. Just say you won't vote for him because he's BLACK! SAY IT, JUST SAY IT! SAY THAT YOU RATHER SEE THIS COUNTRY RUIN THAN VOTE FOR A BLACK MAN! I can't see how people could have so much hate! Black people have voted for white people for centuries and now a black man emerges and all of a sudden he doesn't stand a chance with some of you people, even if he's the best in the race. John McCain finished 894 out of 899 in his class and don't know the difference between Shunies and Shiites, yet he claims he has foreign policy experience.

All I can say as an American, may the good lord help us!
Now I'm listening to Chuck Todd going negative on the speeches tonight!  Chuck!  What would Tim say?

You're loosing your credibility...  And, your RED is showing badly...  You and Scarbaby must have a great time after you're off the air...
Tonight I watched the democratic family come together like families always do when it counts...like brothers and sisters who squabble but join together when there is a bully around. There is nothing negative going on in Denver tonight...this is a family that is going to bloody the noses of the other side.

The only difference between John McCain and George Bush is that the ranch will be in Arizona instead of Texas.

GO OBAMA / BIDEN -- GO DEMOCRATS!
Great speeches all: Bill, Biden, and the vets.

This from correspondent Mark Murray:  The Obama campaign has announced a veterans group called Next Generation Veterans For Obama.  While several veterans expressed respect for McCain's military service, the group stressed Obama's superior ability to tackle issues in the 21st century.  Drew Sloan, a veteran Army infantry captain in Iraq and Afganistan, argued that the "threats this country faces were too  complex for a Cold War mentality," and he praised Obama's recognition that "there must be a plan to win the war and a plan to win the peace."

This is the most excited I have been about an election in a long time. The first time I got excited was voting against George W. Bush and for Ann Richards as Governor of Texas. I have actually voted against Bush 4 times, thats more than most of you. And I lived in his county. I know who Chet Edwards is...He's a great democrat....Surely by now, most Americans know that George W. Bush is for George W. and noone else.....and if you think for one minute that McCain is any different, then here we go again. Nothing good can come of nothing gained. Do we really have that much time? That would be 12 years, enough time for your child to graduate.Do you want to risk their future too?
I have to join the group here that says Scarborough is just unwatchable. His whole demeanor is completely unlikable and not even unlikable in the Bill O'Reilly I want to fight you vein of unlikability. It's more in the 'I'm just going to change the channel and watch some other mindless garbage.'

I mean... it's not Steve Doocy bad, but it's pretty bad.

That being said, good luck tomorrow night, Obama.

The family's all together now. Let's beat these guys.

Freedom for the people vs devaluation of the $ -by corporate control of congress.

Now, I finally feel that our party is united, and we will win.  Bill did in his speech tonight, what Hillary failed to do last night.  He legitimized Barack's qualifications, judgement, and readiness for the job.  I also feel that he was genuine in what he spoke, I actually felt it, and my contempt for the Clintons' have lessened.

Overall, tonight was electrifying for me, as opposed to last night.

To:  D. Cortez, Jensen, Ex-female Veteran, Sean, Penny, Mary, OK, Vonita Receser, Judy, Dennis Campbell, and Britney

Don't let the door knob hit you on your way out.  You will not be missed.  Tell McLame I said, "What's up".

I agree that Scarborough is just to sickening to stomach...he has nothing intellegent to add and he is annoying to watch. They need to get rid of him...he spoils everything every chance he gets.

Go Obama / Biden!! Go Democrats!
Well all you dumb and I mean dumb McCain supporters...a man that voted 95% with Bush...and our country is on the verge of being a lower power country...verge heck it already is...China owns us with all the money the republicans borrowed to keep this country from crumbling because of their horrible decisions made ...are you people really that stupid?????  Do you people really not know what a bad place the United States is in????
I've been watching C-Span.  No talking heads, no interruptions, no ads.  That said.  I like Chuck even if he is somewhat Red.  I'm glad Norah is back.  I am concerned that MSNBC is using McCains logo as their own.  What's up with that?  Bill said everything tonight the media and Republicans said he would not.  Bill was great.  Hillary was terrific last night. Joe Biden is a solid choice for VP.  I know I am supporting the right guy.
Obama was criticized for giving the Clinton's so much time this convention.  I totally disagree.  I think it is a brilliant move.  The Clintons got the respect they deserve at this convention.
