Obama surprises crowd

Posted: Wednesday, August 27, 2008 11:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
DENVER, Colo. -- Barack Obama surprised the crowd in the convention hall Wednesday night, appearing on stage after running mate Joe Biden's speech.

"Hello, Democrats!" he shouted to applause. "I want everybody to now understand that I am so proud to have Joe Biden and Jill Biden and Beau Biden and Mama Biden and the while Biden family with me on this journey to take America back."

Moments before the senator took the stage, volunteers passed out "Obama-Biden" signs.  A roar went through the hall as he entered and people scrambled to snap photos.

He praised the Delaware senator for his speech and again complimented his wife and his former rival Hillary Clinton, as well as Bill Clinton, who spoke earlier in the night

"I think Pres. Bill Clinton reminded us of what it's like when you've got a president who actually puts people first," he said. "Thank you Pres. Clinton."

Obama closed by saying the convention was moving to Mile High Stadium to "make sure that everybody who wants to come can join in the party and join in the effort to take America back."

Afterwards, "We are Family" played as Biden's family joined Obama and Biden on the stage.

I was looking for a little more attack-dog from Biden.
Clinton was superb and just clinched the election for
OBAMA!!
Clinton, Kerry, and Biden delivered tonight!

Lines of the night:

Clinton:"People the world over have always been more impressed by the power of our example than by the example of our power."

"Barack Obama is ready to lead America and restore American leadership in the world."

Kerry: "Talk about being for it before you were against it."

Biden: ""Again And Again... John McCain Was Wrong.
Barack Obama Was Right."

Anybody check out the interactions after the speeches with Nancy Pelosi?

I was especially interested in his interaction between Bill and Nancy ...cold to say the least.

Then to see Nancy with Barak was really telling (and a little scary considering how utterly incompetent she is). There is no doubt that he is the nominee because of her hate for Bill (and Hillary). To see her huigging him and then pointing to people that he seemingly needed to talk with reminded me of what I do with my 9 year old son.

I don't blame Barak...none the less it is very telling...I have thought from the start that he was just her and Dean's puppet...she proved it to me tonight.
For all the Hillary supporters (and I like Hillary) who are not voting for Obama with hopes of getting Hillary elected in 2012, keep in mind that the country will need to exist in 2012 for her to get elected and if John McCain gets his way with his plans to recreate the "100 years war" while apparently taking on Russia and their nuclear arsenal....do you see where I am getting at with all this?  WE WON'T BE HERE IN 2012 if John McCain is elected.  In Kucinich's words from last night "WAKE UP AMERICA".
Chuck - does the potential of Gustav, as a potential Category 3 hurricane, hitting landfall early next week i.e. Monday a positive for Monday since that is when Bush and Cheney are speaking and would reduce the time spent on the current Administration?  This could be a positive versus a negative.
I loved it, I think the American People will as well.
Tonight I watched as the democratic family came together...just like families do when it counts. There is nothing negative going on in Denver tonight. The democratic party is ready to take this country back!

The only difference between John McCain and George Bush is the ranch will be in Arizona instead of Texas.

Go Obama / Biden! Go Democrats!
Everything the Republicans and the media told us Bill Clinton would not do, he did tonight.  Here's to Bill.  I am thrilled that Biden is the VP pick.  He is a solid choice.  Go, Joe!  Great speech, John Kerry.  Great night for Democrats.  I know I have made the right choice in supporting Obama.
Is the MSNBC logo the same as McCain's?  Looks like it to me.  Is that by design or an accident?  Different colors, but otherwise the same.
First of all I am so proud of the DNC they are starting to hammer their point iwthout being nasty.Second Michelle Obama's speech was fantastic, Hillary and Bill delivered some of their best speeches as well. Then Joe Biden drove it home. There were many good speehesfrom other people as well. I only wish that when Obama joined Biden on the stage that the Clinton would have come down as well but now I do believe that that is something we will see leading up to the election. Forget all of the silly talk about the riff. Bill and Hillary showed real class and so did the Obama's and the Biden's. Now if the people that want to keep saying they wont vote for Obama because of the love for Hillary . I think that that excuse has been removed so state your real reason and stop lying. All I can say is if you trully love this country and respect the service of our men and women in the armed services the absolute choice is clear. That choice is Obama the man that has backed the troops and has made very smart decisions regarding how we should use diplomacy instead of war as a first option. Not saying that he would rule out the use of force but that he would use it wisely unlike what has happen to us under the leadership of Bush ,Cheney and McSame's watch. Americans I ask you not to forget that our service men were lead into a WAR on a lie. That we have been lied to by the The Bush people on how quickly it would be over. How becuase their lie was being exposed they exposed a CIA operative. How the Bush adminstration has run ruff shode in abusing the Constitution. so now you ttell me that you want more of the same McCain for president. The truth is he is beyond more of the same he is more of the same and worse. This man is a loose cannon. People say that at least they know what they are getting with McCain. Yes they are going to get the draft reinstated. More high gas prices and tax breaks for the very oil companies that are raising those prices. So not only are you giving Obama the finger, you are giving it to yourselves if you are not rich. You have to ask yourself why are so many Republicans jumping ship?????????
This was fun. Now the question becomes - what next? My suspicion is that the speech that will really count (besides Tuesday's from Hillary, which was excellent) is Barak's tomorrow night.

Oh, and John Sidney McCain (and Timmy)? Best hope that Gustav doesn't rain on your parade....
I'm confused, the dems say that the repubs are wrong, and the repubs will say the dems are wrong. The amount of hypocrisy displayed at the dem convention will only be equalled by the amount of hypocrisy displayed by the repub convention. America, wake up! they are both wrong.
Thank you JOHN KERRY...you hit a HOME run tonight!
After this convention none of us will miss going to the next one...Get going, get working and NEVER look back.

I think hurricane Gustav's arrival next week is so very fitting, considering the 'right wing nut' from CoSpgs begging for rain in Denver Thursday night...

According to the weather reports, it's not going to happen...

But Gustav is...  Ya gotta love it the prophecy of it...  And, the people of New Orleans are paying attention this time...
I just heard Chuck Todd et al. criticizing Biden's speech, and the convention in general for not offering up enough "red meat" by not attacking Bush and Cheney enough, but if MSNBC bothered to listen to and let the viewing audience listen to some of  the other speeches they would  have heard plenty of attacks. For instance, Harry Reid went pretty hard at Cheney, accusing him of conspiring with his oil industry cronies. Fortunately I got to heard his speech and others by watching C-Span. Unfortunately most people are relying on the cable stations to get their convention coverage and they're really missing out. Get with it, MSNBC!
There's been a lot of complaints from the MSNBC hosts (Chris and even Olbermann, I'm looking at you) that the Dems haven't attacked McCain or Bush or Cheney enough.  This is just an artificial debate point they bring up because it's easy, they want an easy angle to push because they're lazy and don't do nuance.  Democrats are not Republicans.  We Democrats aren't going to just trash the opposing party because we actually have more to talk about.  We have a plan for the future, we have a plan to return the economy to one of stability, we have a plan to confront the dangers around the world while still maintaining out dignity AND we can talk about all of this without reverting to incessant petty name calling as we'll see from the Republicans next week.  MSNBC, YOU like confrontation because it's easy to talk about, you're lazy journalists, for once move past the politics of confrontation and realize that people are intelligent enough to see, hear and understand the differences between the two political parties without reverting to petty character assassination.
If there are people who do not want to unite with this party...then so be it. Women will come through for women's rights, veterans will come through for veteran's rights, and the middle class will come through and take this country back!

Does anyone want to be watching John McCain dribble on about his POW experience a year from now...no way! I don't even want him back in the Senate...he works against women's rights, benefits for veterans, and now he wants to keep giving our hard earned revenue to the richest .01% (including himself).

The only difference between John McCain and George Bush is the ranch will be in Arizona instead of Texas.
There is so much to clean up in the White House that I feel Obama and Biden will need at least eight years to make a dent of the Republican Iceberg that has been a float.  It's nice to see the unity of this convention however I hope it last.
I find it unbelievable that MSNBC anchors/hosts actually spent 45 mins after Biden's speech critiquing 'speech writers'! Funny, Hillary who did nothing more than talk about 'herself' and 'her supporters' and did nothing at all to show 'unity' gets an 'out of the park' comment from Olhberman? She did nothing more than she was ATMOST, expected to do from here peers! I think Biden's speech had the most direct statements on differences between Obama and McCain. He clearly showed the differences and made the 'average person' like myself, really look at some of the atrocities of the present administration... but yet you guys spend the valuable time afterwards critiquing his speech writer, and what 'you think' should have been said, and how he could have said something better???? Please just report the news for what it is, just present the facts... let us plain ol folks 'analyze' it and determine whats 'red meat'!
Just ask yourselves this... would Tim Russert have spent all that time talking 'speech writers' or 'real issues'?
It amazes me that people complain about dirty politics and swift boating and then we get a candidate
who tries to stay above all of that, then the talking heads complain that there's not enough "red meat" or attacking of John McCain. You can't have it both ways, besides how could MSNBC know if anybody was attacking anybody as they talked to each most of the convention. MSNBC had the worst coverage nevering showing John Kerry or the tribute to our Veterans you guys lose out.
Well, now that the Clinton's have delivered, what will the talking head's have to do other than to wash the Stink off.

As he has done so magnificantly done thruout the campaign, Barack once again has played the MSM the way he wanted to, not the way they wanted to play him.

Another Smackdown to the MSM & Corparate America done by Team Obama !

LMAO !!!

Delusional Thinking By Common Sense American's Is Over !
I would like to call attention to the choice of "We Are Family" written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers and originally performed by Sister Sledge (all African American musicians)as the exit anthem following Sen. Biden's speech. Certainly this choice was meant to engender unity within the Democratic Party and the promise of unity among the American people. That being said, I was deeply offended by the divisive undercurrent of Chris Matthews' commentary regarding what he called the "new experience of having an African American for the Democratic presidential candidate." He stated that "this is the first time we've had a regular guy from the neighborhood, a northeastern, regular guy, Catholic, familiar to me...whose parents wanted life to be better for him. I know that mother. I had a mother like that...It's very real to a lot of people. This family is real. This family has experienced real tragedy." Though I understand Mr. Matthews may have just been trying to express that the imagery of the Biden family spoke to him emotionally, his comments about them being a real family and Joe Biden being a regular guy implies that the new experience of having an African American presidential candidate precludes seeing that presidential candidate as a regular guy and his family as a real family, simply because of the color of his skin. Chris Matthews' comments make me wonder if he understands that our America, belonging to him, me and every other "regular" American, is made up of people who do not look like each other and do not have the exact same traditions, but still represent regular people with real families that have seen tragedy in their own lives. It just makes me sad to see that despite the difficult challenges that Barack's mother overcame as a single parent and the beautiful family the Obama's are raising, their experiences may not ring true to many American's who "grew up like [Chris Matthews] and live like [Chris Matthews]" simply because of the color of their skin. America must move beyond this if we are to see our full potential as a people and a country.
Stop listening to the convention on MSNBC and look at it uninterrupted on CSPAN. I would have missed some very important speeches had I not turned the channel. Plus, I didn't have to listen to all the spin the media is so infamous for...I'd rather think for myself, thank you, instead of letting someone else telling me who's speech was good, too long, too soft, not well-written, etc.  All the noise on MSNBC and CNN does nothing to help the American people make an intelligent decision, they're just there to hear themselves talk and boost their channel's ratings.
I am a loyal MSNBC listener but during this week my family and I have turned to C-Span for the convention.  Wall to wall coverage - no commercial breaks and no one criticizing the speeches or people giving them.  Also - got to see MANY other terrific people speaking about important issues throughout the day - very nice.  Today - tonight VERY SPECIAL, VERY NICE.  Great speeches by Kerry, Clinton and Biden.  Nice to see Barack Obama at the end - the family of Joe Biden - very moving, very nice.
I believe all of the build up tonight and quite frankly since Monday has been for Barack.  He can demostrate he IS our next Commander in Chief by being the ONE to drop the AXE on McCain tomorrow night!  I know this is not what most of the talking heads are betting on - but wouldn't that be the biggest story of all!?!  A real leader - The one I know he is.  Mark my words - I truely beleive tomorrow night is going to be the history that we have all been waiting on...Barack Obama is going to take this fight to the GOP in a mighty way.  Not by surrogates, not by others, but by his own stuff!  That's the Obama I believe we will all vote for come November.  AND I believe that is what the objective of this convention have been about ultimately.
As a veteran, I really listen to those who have served our country and what I heard was........
1. Bush/Cheney lied to our young troops about Iraq having WMD's, thereby being responsible for every life that's been lost in Iraq.
2. That on 9/11/01 when the World Trade Bldgs were attacked, our government did not retaliate against the terrorists (most of them were from Saudia Arabia.
Osama Bin Laden is still alive because our Government fail to send the majority of our troops to his hideout. Bush/Cheney chose to attack a sovereign country and should be held accountable by way of impeachment.
3. Cheney has given his cronies billions of dollars in contracts (Halliburton); they have done a shabby job and our troops are electroquted in their showers because of their shabby workmanship and VP Cheney.
4. Bush is an embarrassment when he goes anywhere overseas because of his inability to articulate his thoughts in a manner that the listening audience can understand. They are embarrass by his inaccuracies and can't wait until he steps down as the US President so he won't have to come back to their country.
5. Our governments utter disregard of the status of the United States employment, housing, and education decline from being the best to having our status sliding towards those nations who have much less than we had.
6. Now we have a hell of a mess in our land and it will take every concern American to clean up after some greedy, lying, and uncaring men who had all power over these United States for eight non-productive years.
If this is what the Republicans want more of.....vote for the next dementia mined candidate...John McSame.
For all those Republicans who prayed for rain on Obama's parade..tomorrow's forecast in Denver is 73 degrees and clear skies with zero, zero!!! percent of rain!!!LOL!!!  Next week, for the third time, third time!! in his Campaign McCain will be interrupted by a Hurricane heading into the US...God is telling us something folks!!!!

Anybody else hear the crickets when it was mentioned McBlameAllMyIllsOnBeingAPOW settled on a VP?  It was really like..."who???...there's someone else running?"  I'd love for it to be Liebermann.  Just to see Hush Bimbo, O'Hannity, Hugh Hewitt, Rick Roberts, Bum Beck, Laura Stinkgram, and Ann Colter's heads explode.  McBlameItAllOnVietNam has backed himself in a corner.  Ohhhh, the endless tapes of the McCain-Romney, McCain-Huckabee, McCain-McCain feuds are priceless!!!

Sounds a little like walter Mondale's scare tactics to Beat Ronald Reagan in 1984. It didn't scare the American public back then and it can't scare us now
I have some random thoughts on coverage (who doesn't). I don't presume to be first or unique on these, but am surprised that MSNBC haven't made certain connections.

Why not more red meat?
1- Obviously, Obama promised to rise above that - and that has been discusssed. Check.
2- Also, the attacks are policy driven, not personal.    Noted, but why?  Well, McCain and the party will be very personal. If trying to win independent voters, who say they hate negative attacks; let this week show the difference but leave out the hate. I have no doubt there will be hate on display next week. Let the other  party self destruct.
3- My only disappointment, and maybe rapid response DNC is waiting until next week, but the attack I'm still waiting on is McCain's temper. They got him on judgment and policy, but personality and shaping of temperment is also critical. Other senators have talked about his short fuse and they don't want him in charge of foreign policy. Why would we want someone like that in charge of the military??
4- Maybe I'm naive, maybe I remember history, but conventions and politics aren't always negative. That  part is cyclical. Right wing radio has turn the country negative over the last 2 decades. But Reagan ran on "Morning in America", our best days are ahead, I believe in the shining city on a hill, etc.  Positive campaigns can and have worked.   Bookend a hopeful convention against the sliding economy, unpopular war, unpopular party in the Presidency, and personal attacks from the other side - and that should contrast enough to win. Independents could easily tune out next week and make their decision early. The Democrats don't have to non-stop attack.
5- If they did a non-stop attack, it's the best argument for the Republicans, a gift. "The Dems have no ideas or plan." "Bush and Cheney are not on the ticket." Don't play on their field. Their policies will be on the ticket. Keep hammering that.

A thought on McCain's houses. I understand the mocking humor. It's easy, he's rich and elite, and out of touch. Maybe even senile. But there might be a real issue here. McCain said he didn't know because they are in his wife's name, corporate name, some are condos, etc.  Wait!  Mrs. McCain doesn't release her taxes or her business. How do we know if John McCain isn't using these properties for political and personal use, but then has them tax sheltered. I'm serious, at best McCain is nothing but another rich guy not paying his fair share, but at worst, maybe a tax cheat. We know about his wife's private plane has  a personal tax exemption (which I don't think is fair or right, but it is legal), but what about the houses.
Never thought i'd be impressed with Kerry, had to poke my eyes out as I voted for him in 2004, but i have to say I couldn't recognize him when I heard him over the radio, what a speech! He brought out all the foreign policy blunders McCain represents, and much more. The Clintons, much as I disliked them during these primaries, were stellar, and a true class act. Anything more would have been disingenious. I've been an Obama supporter from the beginning, though I've always worried that its not his time yet. Here's the thing, if I were a hardcore hillary supporter: Since Hillary would be (rightly or wrongly) blamed for an Obama defeat, she'd lose in 2012 if she tried to run against McCain. However, if  Obama is as bad as the PUMA people claim, Clinton would win in 2012 anyway in a Ted Kennedyesque + I Told You So campaign. Either way, even a "failed" Obama candidacy will be heaven compared to 4 more years of the same.
Another great convention night.  CSPAN had the best coverage as usual with no talking heads, just "better than being there" footage from multiple camera angles.

Turned over to CNN briefly after the end, to see Larry King interviewing some GOP talking head.  Disappointed to see the GOP still OUT AND OUT LYING ABOUT OBAMA'S POSITIONS.  Today's lie was that Obama will raise everyones taxes !!! ooooh scary !!! Unfortunately completely untrue, as confirmed in this independent research>

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/06/09/ST2008060900950.html
The so called pundits on MSNBC, Fox News, CNN and every other station are nothing amount to a bunch of idiots who don't know how to think.  All the networks seem to think that the Clintons' speeches were "...out of the park" when all they did was do what was expected.  Then I hear that Biden's speech was average and didn't attack enough????!!!  Are you guys kidding me?  The first part of his speech was very personalized and moving and had delegates including Mrs. Obama moved to tears (who else at the convention has done that so far).  He then went into some specific differences between McCain and Obama.  The surprise entrance of Obama capped things off and it was Biden and Obama who electrified the crowd, not the Clintons.
Bill came through....Joe is going to be a good "attack dog" abd great V.P.......am I going to get this thru or am I going to be rejected for the 12th time in 6 days..
I guess my commentary isn't as important as my blog buddy Mark Theime, who like me has been postining on and off for 4-5 years???
Where is "Still Crazy" "Ryan Michigan" and the rest of the Pre-election blog group??
I may have to put my keyboard away, my edgy comments must be passe???
I agree with an earlier posting that there is too much talking by the commentators and not enough time allowing the viewers watch the speeches so we can make up their own mind.
Can you hear it Republicans???? The sound of thousands of voices uplifted by the speeches that we have heard over the last three days.

The Republicans are TOAST in Nov. The majority of Americans believe your party is the party of liars and warmongers. The ignoramous that YOU elected twice has run this country into the ground.

Get used to your new President to be -- Barack Obama!!!

I was very upset that when I was trying to listen to John Kerry's fantastic speech, your stupid MSNBC theme music was drowning the whole thing out. Unfortunately, I couldn't do anything about it because it was on TIVO. I was a big fan of yours last election, but this year I've been very disappointed! I'm even getting tired of Rachel Maddow! I guess I'll have to turn to C-SPAN if I want to hear what people are actually saying. I also miss Tim Russert! (PS-if it makes you feel any better, I hear that CNN was just as bad). Although that shouldn't be much consolation!
This is a great convention for democrats! Hillary and Bill were both great, you felt their sincerity when they gave their support for Barack, and Michelle Obama did wonderful as well by re-introducing herself and Barack Obama to people who thought negative of them, and John Kerry was right on about "Senator McCain vs. Candidate McCain", and Joe and Beau Biden touched peoples hearts with their speeches. This will be known as one of the best conventions in US history!
There was plenty of "red meat" tonight - as the previous poster said, the spin from the media is and will still be that there wasn't enough.  Its going to be different than the rabidness the crazies next week will have on display (thank goodness)...but the point that is continuously being hammered is that Mc Cain is not what he appears (or is CONSTANTLY being spun as), McCain would be a continuation of failed policies and that Obama/Biden will be THE change we need.

No more:  corruption, cronyism and combat

More: class, Constitution and cooperation
Nice Job CNBC great Balanced coverage. Maddow, Mathews and Olberman.  You covered this from the left the far left and the looney fringe.  I noticed there were no pollsters around tonight could that be because Obama lost 2 points between yesterday and today.

You guys should be ashamed of yourself atleast the other evil network brings on the occasional Liberal to provide some opinion amongst their right wing agenda driven commentary.
