Biden meets with firefighters, guardsmen

Posted: Thursday, August 28, 2008 2:51 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
DENVER -- Joe Biden today again called John McCain a hero, but said that he disagrees with his “good friend” over the way forward in Iraq.

“He’s a real hero,” the Delaware senator told members of National Guard units stationed outside of Invesco Field. “We’re going to have our disagreements, we’re going to have our disagreements on policy. The one thing that we kind of disagree on, that is, what do we do now for you to be able to do the job we’re asking you to do.”

He praised the work of guardsmen who have encountered more in recent years than the probably bargained for, saying, “This isn’t your father’s National Guard.” He also noted that his own son, Beau, is going to be deployed to Iraq soon, and asked the group to keep an eye out for him if they returned.

“He’ll keep an eye out for you guys,” he added. “Keep the faith, go get ‘em.”

Biden also spoke to a group of firefighters at the site, talking about his great personal affection for the bravest who helped save the lives of his two sons, and his own when he suffered an aneurism.

“Look us over,” he urged the group. “If you don’t like what we’re doing, pick up the phone and holler at my campaign.”

Biden spent about 15 minutes meeting with the two groups, shaking hands and posing for pictures as well. As one guardsman asked for a photo, he gladly obliged.

“If I had your hair I’d be president, you know what I mean?” he told him. “I wouldn’t be screwing around with this job.”

I love this man and thank God he is running for vice president. Our country needs Obama and Biden
Will you also report when he goes into the stall and take a piss? My goodness! Report the Putin business already.
Go forward in Iraq? Joe, Iraq is now on mop up duty. That part of the war on terror is complete. I know you think that's the end of the terror war, but Joe, really, it's only the beginning. Lots left to do, and you along with the Rookie from Illinois don't have a plan for it it seems.
Biden is so authentic. I'm enjoying getting to know him again as Barack's VP.  They do seem a lot alike.  I could imagine Joe giving some of Barack's speeches and visa versa.
“Look us over,” he urged the group. “If you don’t like what we’re doing, pick up the phone and holler at my campaign.”

I did. Recorded message said that Barack doesn't talk to mere mortals anymore. It said to get in contact with one of his 300 "advisors".
The Dems need to stop giving McCain too much credit.  They DO need to attack his character, and drag him through the mud.  Harry Reid said today that he "can't stand McCain" and that he lacks the temperament to be President.  That's exactly what we need.

McCain doesn't deserve all that respect.  Otherwise every time they tear him down a little bit, they give him a safety net by calling him a hero...

On that note, I've felt the term "hero" gets thrown around far too often.  You have to do something heroic to be called a hero.
McCain Adviser: There Are No Uninsured Americans

Texas once again led the nation with the highest percentage of residents without health insurance, a U.S. Census Bureau report showed Tuesday, although the same study also reports a slight dip last year in the percentage without coverage across the nation.

...

But the numbers are misleading, said John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, a right-leaning Dallas-based think tank. Mr. Goodman, who helped craft Sen. John McCain's health care policy, said anyone with access to an emergency room effectively has insurance, albeit the government acts as the payer of last resort. (Hospital emergency rooms by law cannot turn away a patient in need of immediate care.)

"So I have a solution. And it will cost not one thin dime," Mr. Goodman said. "The next president of the United States should sign an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American - even illegal aliens - as uninsured. Instead, the bureau should categorize people according to the likely source of payment
Biden: “If I had your hair I’d be president, you know what I mean?” he told him. “I wouldn’t be screwing around with this job.”

Huh?!? What the heck does this mean? Joe does ad-lib poorly, but you'd think they'd reign him in until after the convention got done. "Screwing around with this job"? Joe, if you don't want it, don't take it. What a demeaning statement from a very demeaning man.
Ted, Kalamazoo MI---McCain doesn't deserve ANY credit.  I left the Republican party in 2000 after I saw the kind of unethical campaigning that was done against him and now he's doing it to someone else.  Candidate McCain of 2008 bears absolutely NO resembelence to Senator McCain of 2000.  Its pathetic.  I just can't respect someone who having been treated they way he has treat someone else the same way.  Its disgusting and it hardly makes him a man of honor.

He was joking, Einstein.
MSNBC, I was listening to Stephanie Miller this morning and a listener was saying that she watched Major Tammy Duckworth and Representative Patrick Murphy, both Iraq veterans, on C-Span yesterday.  If you were to have aired their speeches, you would have had the "red meat" that Pat Buchanan was complaining that was not being addressed.  Instead, MSNBC decided to have talking heads on the air.  When are you going to air their speeches?
The Republicians are stressing no experience for Obama, didn't George Bush have experience and look at the condition the United States is in.

Still waiting for that recession the Democrats have been cheering for all year. 3.3% growth last quarter, not bad. Now the same Democrats are cheering for the hurricane to hit New Orleans next week. What is wrong with you people? You will really have a problem with good news, and you can't wait to hear bad news.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/DN-Uninsured_27bus.ART.State.Edition2.4dce428.html

What a true disgrace McCain and his campaign are. This is NO JOKING MATTER. The American people are being hit hard right now when it comes to medical insurance and McCain and his campaigns answer is the 'Emergency Room'. I guess McCain'ts answer for the hungry is the 'Food Shelter'. I guess McCain's answer for high gas prices is 'walk'. I guess McCain'ts answer for our poor educational system is 'just read more'.

I guess McCain'ts answer for not knowing how to solve the problems America faces is the fact that he was a POW. I'm sorry Mr. McCain, but that’s not good enough. America needs more than a good soldier, America needs a wise leader and that person is Barack Obama.

We can spend $10 Billion a month on a war, but our nations health its people and the issues we face-- is no big deal, it’s just 'mental'. At least that's what John McCain thinks.

No Way. No How. No McCain. (Thanks Hillary!)

Bush = McCain

McCain is more of the same (maybe even worse).
Oh, get off it Sally

Capt S. - the real problem is that you hate women, isn't it? That's all you do is cut down C.McCain day in and day out with innuendo and just plain lies. Just what in the world is your problem?
Joe Biden has the ear of the common people because he's one of us, unlike "Elitist" McCain and his rich and greedy elitist base.  Only Obama and Biden will protect and serve the middle and poor classes, the same people that the repugnant ones have been at war with for almost 30 years.

So funny how jealous the repugnant ones are that we have such great candidates running for every political office from top to bottom.  They can only try to villify Obama about such petty things as being a rock star or trying to act godlike by speaking on a stage with Greek columns on it.  Hypocritical on the last point since "Tyrant" Bush had a similar setting 4 years ago.  I mean what better symbol of democracy is there other than a Greek style column?  Barack is not trying to look godlike, he's just trying to show he believes in democracy.

Why do the repugnant ones hate democracy so much?  Only Obama/Biden will protect our secular democracy from those who are trying to destroy it.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
The Dems need to stop giving McCain too much credit.  They DO need to attack his character, and drag him through the mud.  Harry Reid said today that he "can't stand McCain" and that he lacks the temperament to be President.  That's exactly what we need.

-------

I don't necessarilly take it as praise and respect - I think that by saying those words, they're actually shaming McCain - because he's not the maverick of 2000 any longer, he's the sidekick of 2008.  He's no more a hero than any of our other soldiers past and present.   He's not a god, and he's obviously not a very good pilot.  Besides, that was 40 years ago, he's had plenty of time to make good, and has he?  Depends on who's asking.  Why does he think he's a change agent?  He's had 25+ years, with little to show for it - I know....but, but....I'm a pow.  Yeah, and if my aunt had a hooter she'd be my uncle.  thats neither here nor there for me.  That was then this is now - what are you going to do for us now.  McCain doesn't want to relay infor on his policy positions - all he does is attack Obama.  Sorry, my vote is too important this year - either start dealin' with the issues, or kiss my vote goodbye.
'Clueless Joe'-- The Demcratic ticket understands perfectly well that the "War on Terror" is not over.  Senator Obama has been saying for years that we needed to be fighting the war on terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the perpetrators of 9/11 holed up.

You folks just don't seem to understand that Iraq was never a part of the war on terror until after the U.S invaded and set the stage for foreign and domestic terrorists in Iraq to have a field day!  Muslim extremists could not have asked for a better training ground and opportunities for recruiting and fund-raising.  The Bush/Chaney/McCain attack on Iraq has set us behind at least five years in the war on terror.

Oh, please Mr. DV, please explain what plans these two nitwits have hatched up for the country. And don't be pointing to Obama and Biden websites - we all want to know what YOU know of these plans. My guess is you're just another mindless minion that says what you're told to say, and you haven't a clue what your talking about.
Biden's correct when he said this isn't your father's guard.  The national guard is being called up more and more often and for longer tours than have been in the past.  It is becoming harder for people to consider joining the guard because of the risk of going to Iraq and not coming back.
Oh what a night!  History was made yesterday as the party united behind the Obama-Biden ticket to victory! The parade of speakers with their personal endorsements moved me to tears!  Veterans spoke out!  The speeches by John Kerry, Bill Clinton and Joe Biden were historic.

As I observed the lady who was a pilot in Iraq passionately defend veterans, walk away from the podium ... I noticed she had no legs!  They were amputated after her chopper was shot down.  She ran for office in 2006,was vilified and attacked by the republican party with no mercy or compassion.  She lost the election but not her spirit.  She reminded me last night of why I am no longer a republican! Her name slips my mind this morning ... but not her sacrifice and service. Rafael, Roswell, GA (Sent Thursday, August 28, 2008 10:15 AM)

Rafael,

Her name is Tammy Duckworth - she ran in my district here in IL and was barely defeated by the Repulican candidate Peter Roskam (sp??).  I voted for her and she is on the short list of replacements for Barack's Senate seat after he's sworn in as POTUS!

Obama/Biden This is our Time!
McCain supporters/apoligists - Enjoy next week's rants by your sorry party leaders. Thanks, but no thanks. Your team has proved their incompetence at governing for 7 years. It is time for the Adults to take over from the corrupt chickenhawks - GOP girly men like John McCain. What a corrupt and sorry lot.
McCain is a hero, AND he is better on policy:

THE BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLICANS

It’s McCain and not Obama who shall never call retreat.
It’s McCain and not Obama who can man the judgment seat.
It’s McCain’s and not Obama’s surge that saved us from defeat.
We’ll cast our votes for John.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
We’ll cast our votes for John.

It’s McCain and not Obama who has served across the sea.
It’s McCain and not Obama who has fought for you and me.
It’s McCain and not Obama who can keep free nations free.
We’ll cast our votes for John.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!

We’ll cast our votes for John.
Clueless:

Interesting Comment about Iraq.

See if we can put it another way.

We are mopping up and completing the war on terror in Iraq where there was no war on terror in the first place until we invaded and created an environment that encouraged terrorism. And now that we have reduced the level of terrorists acts we can claim victory even though terrorists acts in Iraq were non-existent before we invaded. How's that?
Joe Biden is a great man and a great American. I'm so glad he's on our side.

OMG!! Now if MCCAIN went around talking to these national guards like that, telling them his son also had been to Iraq, and talk about how he loved the military and talked about those five years when he was a POW and was tortured everyday, had no table, chair, nothing , could not talk  or see anyone for years, now can you just hear the screams from all you libs on here, and the press and media and especially msnbc, they'd be yelling look at MCCAIN trying to get sympathy, and trying to use his military and what happen to him to get to them, and doing it just walking around like biden did, please give me a break, such a doublestandard, its ok for biden to get away with this crap, and to get away with all the racist things he has said , and his foul mouth and some of you here say , oh i love biden, and what a disgrace what is happening over at msnbc, I listen to them last night for a few mins. and it was nothing but a lovefest for obama and biden, and then had the gall to go after ANYBODY MCCAIN is goint to pick, they thought all were just going to be boring, and already bringing up the house deal, if its Romney, biden is no poor guy, all he is trying to stress is he is from scraton pa. and nothing about delaware, msnbc has lost all objectivity, they may as well shut down, to them there is only one guy running for president, and why even watch them next week, it will be all NEGATIVE, after this week has been all WORSHIP obama from olbermann, maddow, matthews and face it all of them. I wish the MCCAIN people would not even go on msnbc, cut them off, it does not matter anyway, it will be attacks anyway and gotcha questions, and what has happen to andrea mitchell, she is no reporter anymore, she works for obama. WE SURE MISS TIM RUSSERT, now he was good, a democrat but you could hardly tell. nbc and msnbc have lost it. and what was it that bill clinton REALLY said about obama, he is a fairytale!!!!

I know heroes.  Lived with them.

John McCain is no hero.  Not even close.

Suz:

Here is a line I wished Biden had used in his speech last night.

Speaking to McCain (2008) - My friend, I knew and was close to John McCain back in 2000, and you are no John McCain.
Americans have one chance to recover themselves; Obama and Biden offer to change the direction of the greed-driven, morally corrupt and criminal behavior of the Bush Administration. The level and extent of Police paramilitary is a byproduct of the neocon Nazi-like Bush policies. Changing the damage of the previous eight years will not be a simple task; like any journey, it will be one step at a time---let the journey begin November 4th with the election of Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Where did I here that echo before? Oh, I remember; it was Wes Clark. It’s so true POW, experience and bad foreign policies doesn’t make the BEST CIC.
No way
No how
No McCain!
Nobody but Obama
Obama/Biden 08/12

Republican Troll's are showing how scared they are now that the Democratic party has come together in a show of force for November. Donna in Nj is the best 1 as she tries to make herself from 3 different states, all with the same info.

I'm thourgholy enjoying watching the self destruction of the GOP on a national level.

I wish no ill will towards the people in the current path of Gustav, but devine intervention seem's to be in order for the GOP.

It's a warning to those who wish ill will upon fellow American's(i.e. praying for rain in denver tonight, like the Unmoral Majority has done). You may get what you want, just Not when or where you want it.

McCain sold his soul to Karl Rove the true Anti-Christ!

I read this on a blog earlier today... can't remember which one... but the blogger basically said that McCain trying to step over Obama's storyline of history shows that he doesn't put his country first.

We have nominated our first African American be to be the candidate of a major party. And the fact that Barack is accepting on the 40th anniversary of MLK's I Have A Dream speech is enchanting.
McCain announcing his VP, and his attack ad tonight shows that he is putting himself first by trying to tamp down the significance of today.
The Iraq War or should we call it the Bush/Cheney War. Where no terrorist existed, when Iran was not developing weapons of mass destruction because Saddamn held them in check, before the Axis of Evil List was produced, before there was a word of surge used in military lingo, before "Mission Accomplished", and the US was respected as a beacon of light.

Even Reagan knew better a true and staunch republican did not truth McCain a liar, a womanizer and backstabber. He knew he was not a hero but a POW just like so many other.

I just seem not to get it. All the true Reaganites that are the Repukes dummies.

"The blind leading the blind",  John McCain

MSNBC you "suck" for not showing all the happening at the convention. Your talking head is doing a disservice to the American People that's why I watch C-Span.

"Want get posted".

Lou R from Atlanta:

Dude, sweet.
No C A.

We us a nation are actually hitting two birds with one stone --- remove murderer Saddam and open a front on the war on terror for the bonehead jihadist to flock (so that all you Democrats are totally unharmed in the US). The 4000+ who gave the ultimate sacrifice did not go in vain...God bless them and their families...

I hate war but is a necessary evil that provides the freedom and liberty you enjoy today...Sometimes the ones who are "out of touch" are your circle who believe that Obama's word can cause the rogue states, Russia, China to change their ways...C'mon wake up and smell the coffee!
How many here think that during the Rep Convention many of the speakers will begin their Obama bashing speeches with a few comments first about how Obama is a friend, a smart guy, a good father, etc., not unlike the majority of Dem speeches that always started off by describing McCain as a friend, or a good man, and a war hero?

Your answer tells one a little about the differences between the Republicans and Dems dosn't it? Did you eve wonder why it is that no matter who raises the desire for cooperation and non-partisanship the Republicans always seem to immediately attack that person as weak or out of touch. Perhaps they are right in one regard. Such a person is not in touch or persuaded with the Republican's desire for divisiveness that they use to conquer and control the masses. A page right out of Karl Rove's book and O'Reillys, Hannity's and Limbaugh's mouths.
McCain at least you eventually returned from Viet Nam, to be able to talk about it, and talk, and talk, and talk, and talk.... many were not as fotunate as you. Get over it, we did. If you can not get over the horror of that war you need to get help. And this means you would be a hazard to our country.

Kerry's buddies who were there with him in Nam joined him on the trail.

When hell freezes over, McCain's fellow POWs are going to hoist him on their shoulders and march in a parade in his heroic honor.

That check is in the mail.  Hold your breath.

Vanguard (3:34 PM)
What are you talking about? Have you heard any specifics from McOld about anything important to us? He only REACTS to Obama without coming up with an original or creative thought. Then, he forgets everything he said and relies on his staff to "get back" to us. What an idiot, and you, Vanguard, are even dumber for swallowing his BS.

Glad your so easily entertained. How about those polls though? You like those too? Not much of a bump I see.

Dems are running scared now. Every day, in the back of their little minds, they are starting to realize, they picked the wrong guy.

Going to see a little man in a big stadium tonight too. Lets hope none of the props fall on him.
If you missed Kerry's speech last night...you need to view it before you vote:

I’ve been “sadly mistaken” about a few things in my life, but NEVER about one thing.  And that is the level of your intelligence, wisdom, integrity, and just plain humanity.  Everyone here could learn a lot by paying careful attention to your posts – not just about politics, but about life.  Your own personal serenity is the best testament I know of to a life well-realized.

It seems to me that we had this discussion once before, in a similar context.  McCain has always sought the presidency just for the sake of being president.  In an unguarded moment, not that long ago, he actually said so.  Obama, on the other hand, seeks the presidency as just a part of his larger journey toward self-actualization, where the presidency is not the goal but only a means of helping others reach their own fulfillment.  He makes himself the vehicle, as you say, and carries the American people toward the water.  Whether we reach the water or drink from it then becomes up to us.

In terms of “judgments,” from your other post (9:59 a.m.), you clearly got the best of those.  I cannot thank you enough for being my friend.  Dedicating your post to me means more than I can say.  Bless you.

p.s.  (from your 3:48 p.m. post this thread)  Another line Biden could have used last night about John McCain that becomes more true every day ...

A noun and a verb and POW.

And McCain, sir, is no C A.

<a BIG wink and smile to you>
singin' a different tune:

I think I adore you
