McCain congratulates Obama in new ad

From NBC's Mark Murray
The McCain camp has been hyping a new TV ad all day. On MSNBC's Morning Joe, communications director Jill Hazelbaker told Mika Brzezinski: "Well, Mika, this is a historic ad. I think this is the first of its kind. Sen. McCain is going to speak direct to camera to Barack Obama. I’m not going to give away many more details than that. But suffice to say it’s going to be a very exciting ad, and I think it’s going to get a lot of attention."

Would McCain attack Obama in the ad? Would he announce his veep pick?

Well, we finally saw the ad. And in it -- drum roll, please -- McCain congratulates Obama. "Sen. Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed," McCain says to the camera. "So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done."

The McCain camp says the TV ad will run on national cable and in "key states."

He is a smug b......
He will not fool anyone especially the INFORMED voters...
Wow! Civility in politics! I'll take it, even if it's just for a day:)
"The McCain camp says the TV ad will run on national cable" ...for free since he's such an expert at getting free air time off you guys. That's a very disingenuous tactic on his part and sloppy journalism on your part.
I'd like to take this at face value.  Unfortunately, the pattern of the McCain campaign thusfar leads me to another conclusion: this is designed to make Senator Obama to look ungracious when he attacks McCain in his acceptance speech (regardless of the fact that the speech was written long before this ad premiered.)  Tomorrow, the McCain campaign will loudly complain that "John McCain spent a lot of money to congratulate Senator Obama, and what does he get in return?  Insults and attacks!"  In fact, I'm willing to bet the press release tomorrow reads exactly like that.  And the MSM will eat it up, repeating it on -air ad infinitum, weakly questioning McCain surrogates about it so they can repeat the charge yet again.  By this time next week, any Democratic response to statements made at the GOP convention (i.e., anything resembling what the Republicans jsut did at the DNC), will be met with the mantra of "The ungracious Obama campaign has no class!"

In short, it's a trap.  The McCain people want to paint Obama's folks as ungrateful young punks.

And with the complicity of the MSM, it will probably work.

He couldn't just call the guy??
Even this is calculated...can he do nothing genuine?
This is truly disingenuous. McCain's polling must be showing some backlash from the relentless mudslinging they have been doing. Senator Kerry had it right. Senator McCain was an honorable, authentic statesman. Candidate McCain will do whatever it takes to get elected. If anyone thinks this ad is an authentic expression on the part of John McCain, take a look at just a few of the totally misleading ads his campaign has put up in the last few weeks designed solely to drag Barack Obama down.
Obama should have a response ad that thanks McCain and expresses Obama's hope that McCain's convention goes as well :)

Sgt Rock (Sent Thursday, August 28, 2008 4:04 PM):

Well Sgt. , I sure love the smell of coffee. Went three tours in Nam without that coffee much of the time.

Look Sgt., I don't want to get into the merits or mechanics of the Iraq police action with you as I could argue pros as well as cons. Am I glad Saddam Hussein is gone. Sure. Most are. And if we had been told up front that that was out mission as well as to nation build Iraq as we needed a dependable friend in the middle east to fight and bring down terrorism then so be it. I would support that mission if the American  "people" felt it was in their best interest to protect this nation. But that is not what the American people were told. And that is not what the American people wanted after finding out the truth.

The issue may not be that we invaded Iraq as much as it is that our government seemed to think that we Americans needed to be baited into a fight and that we were not adult enough to determine what is good for this country's security and what is not. If the American people want to eliminate Dictators and terrorists by the use of military force throughout the world, including invasions, then say so. And let the American people decide. But don't hide behind various levels of lies before and after such a decision, one that was made only after securing the support of the majority of Americans with false claims of WMD and other non-existent threats. The Iraq war may have been necessary. We will not know for years to come, but the reason provided for entering Iraq were bold face lies and you know it.

Don't even think of calling me or others unpatriotic or weak or out of touch. In fact, many of us have more strength and patriotism then you do. If the American people want to invade and rid this world of Dictators and Human Rights abusers and terrorists then by God say so and I'll bring some fellow ex-Marines from Nam with me and kick some ass. But don't you dare lie to me about our mission or change the purpose of that mission after the fact because you lied about the original objective in the first place. Don’t freaking bait me. Treat me with respect and as an adult, and do the same with all Americans.

So Sgt., don't give me your crap that many of us who do not support this Iraq policing action (and by God it is a policing action and not a war), are out of touch and unwilling to protect our country. But do give us a leader with some honesty and integrity and common sense who will try and avoid a fight to save lives at all costs before asking us to die for our country and we will follow. If we have such a leader and if it is truly necessary then I and some friends from those days in the jungles will make sure that others die for their country or their sadistic terrorists group before we die for our country.

No, those 4000+ did not die in vain. They fought and died for themselves and their buddies who they loved and vowed to protect when placed in harms way. And I can assure you. When pinned down and surrounded by terrorists lobbing grenades and shooting rockets at your unit those grunts will fight their ass off while quickly asking themselves two questions 1) what the hell am I doing here and 2) how the hell do I save my butt and my buddies and get us out of this mess.

You better stand down Sgt. You speak to one who has been there and done that, and who would be willing to do so again even at this age. But by God not under a government or administration who commands I go and fight under fu--ing false pretenses.

And one more thing Sgt. Don't tell me we had to eliminate Saddam Hussein because he was a terrible dictator who murdered his own people and we had to free those poor innocents when you have other cruel warlords and dictators throughout the world and especially in Africa savagely murdering and starving millions of women and children. Where is the honor in bringing down Saddam while thousands of defenseless kids are being slaughtered in other parts of the world while the world itself including the U.S. watches. If you want to get your priorities straight Sgt. let me know and we can talk some more.

Cudos to you for your service Sgt.
Wow he couldnt even keep a straight face. I thought he was going to burst out laughing. But I guess it's great he's endorsing Obama.

Democrats all across the board this year!!!
I can't believe all you hatemonger dems are actually wishing and praying for Gustov/Katrina 2 to hit New Orleans!!!!  The difference this time will be that a COMPETENT REPUBLICAN governor will be prepared.  Not like Katrina when two IDIOT Dumbocrats wouldn't heed the warnings and then blamed it all on the federal government for their own shortcomings.
So...here is the $64,000 question. Was McCain really heartfelt in his congratulations - or - was he pandering for votes by *acting* nice?

Given his negative ads against Obama, it's hard not to think the latter. But I won't 100% come out and say it.

What do you think?
What?...I have to go a whole day without hearing him tell lies and distort the truth?  I can't wait for tomorrow.
If the glove don't fit...

...McCain's full of it.
Bravo...stand up guy!
Well, wasn't that nice!

I guess that goes against Karate Chopping Pat Buchanon.

In the words of President Clinton,
"Thanks, But No Thanks!"
Dear Media,

I watched CNN mostly during the convention. My question is why are they parroting the Republican agenda. The country is in a mess with the Iraq war, housing mess, high gas prices, global warming and complete lack of health care. I know the media consultants all earn 250K + and so will be taxed by the Obama presidency. But for the rest of America (95% of us), Obama presidency would mean prosperity. So, please tell the truth because the country cannot afford four more years of this.
Senator McCain:

We highly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

O/B-08/12
Any way to get his mug into Barack's picture...
Classssy! Will Rev Wright be giving Barack Obama's response?
Sweet.  Sorry Joe, doesn't make up for all the dirt you've been slinging.  And let's not forget, you voted against Martin Luther King Day, so I find your well-wishes ironic at best.
I've always liked McCain...he's not the typical republican...he never has been.

I'm still for the Dems...and always will be....but no doubt a classy move by McCain.

Go get'em tonight Bam!!!!!

Obama/Biden '08
John McCain just scares me. He's like an abusive boyfriend who knocks you around for days and weeks then all of a sudden he's super sweet. Even though he's saying someting nice, there's something in his eyes that's still just scary and mean. At your core you know this guy is just lying and dangerous. There's nothing sincere about this ad. America don't fall for these tricks - don't trust John McCain or we'll be trapped in a bad relationship for years!
The Trojan Horse speaks!!

The Reps are scared to death that Dems will get access to the corrupt secrets in the WH.

I get so sick of pundits criticizing the dems for not being vicious enough.  The reps have been the experts, but they're a dying breed.  Look at the effects of their lies and corruption.  Are they really winners?  At least the problems in the Democratic party were fixable!!   We, the people, are ready for ethical, intelligent, responsible government.
Is this a joke? A bad racial joke? Or his he sincere?
O! mumble jumble the claws that catch and the jaws that bite. Smistoric nonsense. Here we have the insubstant-
ial success of the DNC: vote the image. Deal with McCain's rising populairty!!
Well, that was nice of McCain. I'm glad you think it's "perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day" considering you couldn't bring yourself to vote for MLK day in Arizona.

“We can be slow as well to give greatness its due, a mistake I myself made long ago when I voted against a federal holiday in memory of Dr. King. I was wrong,” he said. “I was wrong, and eventually realized it in time to give full support — full support — for a state holiday in my home state of Arizona. I’d remind you that we can all be a little late sometimes in doing the right thing, and Dr. King understood this about his fellow Americans.”

I wonder if there's a parallel here between McCain being slow to realize King's greatness and his being slow in realizing just about everything else.

At some point, kindness MUST beget kidness.  We will take Senator McCain's ad as a sincere reciprocal decent gesture as Presidential Nominee Barack Obama remained a class act .  However, we know that throughout this campaign we will have to separate the authentic from the insincere-there are some very good political actors out here in both parties.  The Clintons did their part.  Hillary recognize she did not and could not win and stopped the role call.  Bill in particular made his comments short, accurate and sweet-no self aggrandizement there.  He brought it down the field when emphasizing Impressions are made not by the examples of our power, but the power of our examples.  Vice Presidential nominee Biden was the grounded individual we need to support our leader and Kerry is continuing the good fight he started during our last presidential election cycle.  There are so many true Democratic troopers soldiering on by sticking to the party tenants and also honoring the troops, some of our true heroes as the fight is in the war and right here in America too.

Yes, this is a historic event!  Michelle Obama, Esquire kicked it off and Democratic presidential nominee, Barrack Obama will get it done! Together their integrity, intellect, forthrightness, humbleness, exposure and sound judgment will see them through to the presidency.

PS The fodder about Mile High's stage set are soooooooooo juvenile-It depicts some of the White House scenery the Obamas will soon occupy-Can you say presidential....Obamas team don't let them divert you from your Game!

Obamas 08/12
Apparently Mr. McCain doesn't realize that a day is a 24 hour period, in his ad he states "Sen. Obama, this is truly a good day for America. Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed, So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done."

Okay ignoring that McCain voted against making MLK birthday a federal holiday, which to many calls into question the importance he places on "this historic day", but on the same day he sends his little attempt at feel good, according to an earlier First Read post McCain's "campaign released a Web video hit against Obama that’s reminiscent of one he unveiled against Romney before the New Hampshire primary. It contains images of violence and terrorism and questions Obama’s ability to lead."

The man's a hypocrite and is in grave danger of losing support among independents who liked the John McCain of 2000. Was that guy in 2000 real? Has he really sold his soul to win, or was he always such a scumbag.
Woah Mccain, way to show humility. :)
