First thoughts: McCain to make surprise pick

DENVER -- John McCain's done it. He's got the political world buzzing like crazy about a surprise VP choice. Here's what we know: Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney and Joe Lieberman all appear to be out of the running. Of course, these three candidates were the short list, remember? Shows how well the McCain campaign is keeping secrets. The hot name of the morning is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, someone who has been governor less than two years. The pros of her candidacy: conservatives love her and she's known as a hard-core reformer, defeating ethically challenged GOP Gov. Frank Murkowski in '06. She is WILDLY popular in Alaska. The Cons: Does she pass the commander in chief test? Perhaps Palin is a head fake yet again and we should be looking at folks like Tom Ridge or Rob Portman or even Meg Whitman. Bottom line: maybe the Obama campaign should have put the McCain campaign in charge of their VP rollout since they can keep a secret a lot better than Team Obama.

*** Obama punches back: After the first three days of the Democratic convention, there were two things that some Democrats thought were missing: substance and punch. While it was obvious to most, Obama would handle the substance in last night’s acceptance speech, it was surprising that Obama decided to add so much punch. He went after McCain by tying him to Bush, bringing up Phil Gramm, arguing that he’s out of touch (“he doesn’t get it”), contending that he hasn’t done the right things to bring justice to Osama bin Laden, and even using the word “temperament.” In short, Obama wanted to convince Democrats that he was no Michael Dukakis, Al Gore, of John Kerry -- he was going to be a fighter in his campaign against McCain and the Republican Party. The speech also served to inoculate Obama as much as possible from next week’s GOP convention, where he will become the obvious punching bag. Four years ago, the Democrats holding their convention first turned into a disadvantage when John Kerry played nice while the GOP followed by playing tough. But this time around, with as aggressive as Obama was, could going first be an advantage?

*** A disjointed response: The McCain response seemed disjointed. "Americans witnessed a misleading speech that was so fundamentally at odds with the meager record of Barack Obama. When the temple comes down, the fireworks end, and the words are over, the facts remain: Sen. Obama still has no record of bipartisanship, still opposes offshore drilling, still voted to raise taxes on those making just $42,000 per year, and still voted against funds for American troops in harm's way. The fact remains: Barack Obama is still not ready to be President." Considering how aggressive the campaign was all week before Obama’s speech -- unveiling a new attack ad almost every day except yesterday -- to see the campaign left almost speechless shows that they know on this one night they were topped.

*** Blurring the lines: From the policy proposals to the McCain attacks chronicled above, there was something for almost everyone in Obama’s speech without it getting too cluncked up. But to us, what also stuck out was the issue blurring for social conservatives who might be ready to vote Dem on economic issues. He talked about the need to keep unwanted pregnancies down, as well as upholding “the 2nd Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.”

*** Over to you, GOP: As we mentioned at the start of the convention, Obama and the Democrats had three goals, and it appears they met them all. Sell Obama and his family to voters, check. Help unite the party, check. And draw clear contrasts with McCain, check. Indeed, after the speeches by Michelle, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and Obama - as well as the mesmerizing roll call vote -- this week’s Democratic convention might prove to be a hard act to follow. So how does the GOP respond? They'll probably continue to push the fluff argument, as it's worked this summer. And they will obviously play up McCain’s maverick credentials and military heroism. But it will be a big challenge for the GOP to match the speeches, the enthusiasm, and theatrics of the past four days.

*** On the trail: McCain holds a rally with (most likely) his new running mate in Dayton, OH. Meanwhile, Obama and Biden (as well as their wives0 campaign in Beaver, PA.

Final thoughts and comments

Got guts?  I hoped he would deliver, and he did.  Do you really want to take him on now John?

It was another wonderful Obama workout.  I love the way he challenges me mentally and emotionally, and pushes me hard.  I am still numb this morning.

The faces and images.  The site yesterday and the poignancy of the moment reflected in all the faces and images rivals anything I have ever witnessed.

I rested easy last evening.  Now America can rest easy because our new leader has arrived.
The hot name of the morning is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, someone who has been governor less than two years.

If she's the golden girl for the GOP, don't they have to chuck out the meme of 'experience'?  Just askin'...

lol

Not hard to do when the media is in your back pocket and trolling strip clubs and pawn shops in Denver for "news stories".

Gotta say something about the media's favorite "maverick"/bold faced liar, right?

Whoever the VP is, my only advice is this:

Don't quit your day job! :)
I'm hoping it's Ms. Alaska.
Obamabot and The Democratic Party, you better get ready for President John McCain.

No experience, no accomplishment, NObama.
What an awesome nite.  I am so proud to be an American & a Democrat! Obama/Biden 08
Everytime I say to myself "oh, there's no way he'll be able to top what he did last time," he somehow finds a way to do just that! Simply amazing - Obama reminds me of that picture of the staircase that just keeps going up and up and up...

You HAVE to give that speech an A+. He addressed every single point that he needed to address last night, and he did so forcefully and effectively. He somehow managed to give us a speech that was both specific and inspirational. The case he made for his presidency - especially after the setup from Hillary and Bill - is going to be impossible for the McCain campaign to refute.

The GOP convention is going to be non-stop character assasination on Obama, and will NOT be taking him on on the issues. Because they CAN'T! The only issue will be WAR; McCain will try to argue that Obama is weak on foreign policy, but the facts just don't back McCain on this. There have been DOZENS of assesments and strategic decisions that have been made over the course of the war, the surge was the ONLY one that turned out positive for McCain. But unfortunately for him, ALL the other ones he has gotten WRONG. A few of those being...

* We should go to Iraq. WRONG.
* We will be greeted as liberators. WRONG.
* It will be a relatively easy victory with few casualties. WRONG.
* "Mission accomplished!!!" WRONG.
* We need to focus on Iraq not Afghanistan. WRONG.
* We shoulnd't set a timetable for withdrawal. WRONG.
* We should not engage Iran in diplomacy. WRONG.

On ALL OF THESE assessments, Senator John McCain was WRONG, and Obama was RIGHT! That's a FACT. So you can't try to tell us that Obama's foreign policy is weak when he's the one who's been making all the correct assessments, while McCain has been wrong again and again and again.

Brilliant speech. Brilliant campaign. Brilliant candidate.

Obama/Biden '08
I just want to say THANK YOU to the First Read team.  You guys did a great job (probably with very little sleep) on the blog over the last week.

Thanks again!!!
It's official! Obama Wins! McMoron picks  a dunce for V.P.! GO TO http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/ to learn more!
I was discussing Obama’s acceptance speech with my wife and you know how when a difficult moment befalls a nation, you’d need a galvanizing leader. His tone and sincerity come across to ask of your inner strength to do better, to empower yourself, to think clearly before reacting and to know that with persistence, you make it through. The problem most people have is not recognizing that we are actually in one of those difficult moment and to them Obama is not in the position to help. This country has seen more difficult days, but to get the better perspective, you have to look at it in the context of modern times when resources are available for us to combat those problems. We have natural laws that does not care who you are and your application of an action provides a result, therefore when you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you will always reach the same result. If you want a different result, you WILL NEED to change something. It will be arrogant of me to expect that every single person that vote should vote for Obama, but the reality is this. In any attempt for humans to take a leap, there has been a few that wants to not only resist but also wants to dumb civilization down. So to me it is no surprise that we read the blogs from people that set out to insult Barack, blame everyone else, refuse to vote, pledge loyalty to just one idea and lastly continues to do the same thing over and over again somehow expecting a different result. The reasons that some people say things like “No Comment” is that sometimes it is better not to say anything that to actually spew out garbage that not only makes you look absolutely stupid but down right make me question the fairness in sharing this planet with you. Just because First Read asks for your comment does not mean you stumble you dumb a** to the keyboard and start punching away.
Listen Carefully:

Listen carefully to what Obama had to say. Listen to how he correctly described the strategy of the Republican party. The Rove strategy that McCain is now following. It is "divide, conquer and control". If you pay close attention to the Republican surrogates, their Television Ads and McCain's deliveries it is all about dividing Americans against Americans. It is criticism of one group in order to give another group a reason to be against something. It is downplaying "hope" as fluff and the unattainable. When people are divided they are more easily controlled and manipulated. McCain's entire campaign has been built around such a strategy. A strategy of attack rather than one of compromise and cooperation. It has been the Republican strategy for years now and they are masters at it. When Americans are not brought together as one for the common good then they lack purpose. And when they lack purpose they allow others to control their destiny rather than controlling it themselves. It is and has been the Republican political game plan. Just look at the Republican Strategy table of contents and you will understand:

Anti-Union
Anti-Gay
Anti-Diplomacy
Anti-Immigration
Anti-Women's Rights
Anti-Teacher Raises
Anti-Veteran Benefits
Anti-Family Leave
Anti-Federal Assistance
Anti-National Health care
Anti-Gun Control
Anti-Social Security

I could go on.

And worst of all the Republicans communicate and encourage by way of innuendo the differences in people in order to create fear and distrust among Americans. Their messages although often subliminal in nature are full of fear-building references that divide people based on race, gender and other differences. This makes the Republican strategy Anti-American. If this is not true then why is it the Republicans lay claim that only they support the troops? Why do they try and divide this country with such a comments. Think about it.

Obama hinted at this last night. He only hinted at it because he is in a precarious position as a result of his own race. He knows to come right out and speak the entire truth there would be a tremendous backlash against him by the very people that the Republicans have done a good job of brain washing with their tactics. And he knows he cannot afford a backlash at this time.

Listen carefully folks and you will be able to decipher these coded messages by the Republicans. I agree with Obama - ENOUGH! Obama has given you the rallying cry - "We are mad as hell and we are not going to take it anymore! We are not going to be manipulated, divided, conquered and controlled any longer. This is our time."

Meager record of Obama????
The rehuglicans can't be serious, McScrewAmericaAThirdTime has done nothing for America.  He has voted against every best interest of the American people and I can't figure out, who in the hell would vote for him????

Not to mention, when it counts for veterans, he was AWOL.  He voted against equal pay for all; who is John McCain?  He is a sell out to the American and he does not share American values!
It was reported on CNBC that it's Palin.  Another Con you forgot to mention about her: she is under investigation of abuse of power ordered by her state legislature.
i use to like watching msnbc t seems you all are sleeping with obama i hope you someday go back to being neutal
Boy, the Congress has a 9% approval rating. Thank you Nancy Pelosi.
I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but it bears repeating:

If it is Sarah Palin- as we are starting to hear- then the McCain campaign has truly lost it.  After hearing for so long from them that Obama is "not ready" to be President, they may put up a woman who has been governor for less than two years, with no other experience to speak of?

If- and I'm still not convinced- it is indeed Palin, then this is nothing more than a cheap attempt to peel off disgruntled Hillary "supporters".  How insulting.  Women know Hillary Clinton, Senator McCain- and Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton.  You think that just because you put up a woman, that women will flock to your ticket, without researching what your ticket actually stands for?  Dismissive and patronizing, Senator- and ultimately, a failure.

And no need to be snide, First Read.  The only reason the McCain campaign has been able to keep this a secret is because all of the focus has been on Denver.  Had the media been stalking the GOP candidates to the degree they stalked the Dems, there would be more to report.

Or perhaps the GOP simply hasn't decided yet.  Maybe the prospective candidates are all gathering, and the short straw gets selected later today.  Only this time, the candidates may be saying "Please- NOT ME!"

FIRST AND FOREMOST I want to APPLAUD my candidate - Senator Obama on a job WELL DONE!

All the media talk about how "risky" his speech was turned out to be a whole lot of nothing, as usual.

It won't get alot of coverage here, but one of the most powerful moments in the convention were the REAL PEOPLE telling there REAL STORIES.

----------------------------------

"So how does the GOP respond? They'll probably continue to push the fluff argument, as it's worked this summer."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
It is always amazing to me when the media admits in print that it is complicit in helping sell John McCain's lies and BS to the American public.

Thank God for C-SPAN.

P.S. When is Morning Joe going to be cancelled?
how about Florida Gov Christ.Don't forget McCain owe him a big part of his victory.
I think the whole DNC has been upstaged by the McCain VP nomination at Wright State University in Dayton Ohio.
McCain got his clocked clean last night. Tucker's response was laughable at best. BB's at a bear.

As far as Sarah Palin... who? The big problem is she doesn't have enough time to tell her story. Even the conservative radio host this morning said "I have no idea who she is." So much for 'Ready to Lead'.

Obama's speech last night was amazing and he in one night, in one speech, laid out a plan for the future, looked his opponent in the eye and spit it in it, and provided an answer to every criticism and every negative ad pushed against him.

Also, how easy is it to tell the punditry repsonses written before the speech and the ones after?

David Brooks is the most untalented hack I've ever seen on TV or read the work of.

http://www.rodneyhopper.com
It doesn't matter who McFossil picks as his VP - the GOP is toast in November. Rumor has it he will chose Palin (Female/Alaska) in order to woe the disgruntled Hillary supporters. If that's his pick, then Palin is just as stupid as McFossil. McCain has voted AGAINST every woman's issue out there since he's been in the Senate. What kind of woman would support that? A weak, misguided one. These two will be no match for Obama/Biden and we SHOULD regain the White House come November and make the country better for all!
Ah First Read, always making with the snide commentary.

Obama's speech was perfect. The whole dem convention, infact, was extremely effective. I haven't heard the phrase, 'Unify the party' in days, frankly, because I haven't needed to.

One can only imagine what the Republican convention will look like. Bunch of tired old guys talking about how sick they are of Dems complaining about America, and how great this country is.

Fair enough. America HAS been a becon of light in the world...before the last eight years of Bush/Cheney/McCain, that is.

I ask you: How are we going to restore that light?

I know exactly how Obama sees it, and what he'll do.

So how about it, McCain? What are yor going to do?

Obama '08
McCain's campaign was speechless, because they can't argue with facts.  And NO one cares who McCain picks for VP.  I'm sure that the newspeople will ferret it out directly, so you don't need to be snarky about the secrecy of McCain's campaign vs Obama's.

And Bobbi, I waited breathlessly for the breaking news that you and your powerful group had influenced the Supers to over ride the wishes of the electorate selecting Senator Obama as the nominee of the Democratic party.  What happened?

Do you ever get embarrassed about being wrong all of the time?
Commander-in Chief Sarah Palin? Ready-to-Be-President Sarah Palin?

Two years ago she was Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. What a mavericky, responsible choice!
Here's the big question:

Can this inexperienced, right-wing, anti-choice Beauty Queen spell "potato" correctly?
John McCain is old news and whoever he choses for VP doesn't matter. I think the country needs change, needs to take a chance on someone new and a different direction. Obama reminds me of Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Ronald Reagan all rolled together. A proud American who doesn't like the direction we've gone as a country the last eight years. We need a new vision and Obama deserves the chance. If he delivers... we are in for a wonderful 4 years!!
No John McCain watch this Video it makes McCain look like a clown that he is.
http://www.nojohn.com/
I disagree with Chuck T about the Obama campaign not being able to keep a secret about the VP. No one knew til Sat morn.

As for the McCain camp keeping a secret: Nobody knows because McCain decided; changed his mind after Obama's speech, took a nap and has forgot to tell anybody.
i just read that the GOO[P] is considering  postponing their convention because of the oncoming hurricnae.  is this symbolic or what?  now i'm no evangelical but wouldn't those right wingers so inclined to see the divine motive in everything not wonder if there is His hand in the timing of this storm?  maybe the BIG GUY is not pleased!
It has nothing to do with the Obama not keeping a secret. Everyone said he did. It was the media stalking him while ignoring McCain. If you spent half the time on McCain as you do with Obama, you will know that Palin is decoy. She has no experience so the republicans can't use that argument aganist Obama. She is under investigation for abuseing her power as governor. No woman will vote for a ticket because of a woman vp when she plans to take away their reproductive rights.
I think McCain just keeps forgetting who he has selected.  Nobody knows who the VP is going to be...even McCain!
I think McCain just hit a home run.
Vote Barr.  Navy man McCain began running a stupid contest with Paris Hilton who would be as good as Palin.  He should have picked Huckabee to give his campaign any kind of real American morality and I am so upset with McCain who will definitely lose to sissy Obama who will lose our wars and surrender to the terrorists.  Vote for Bob Barr the only conservative in the race.
Sarah Palin?  Lets get real.  Can she pass the commander in chief test?  Is this a pander toward Hillary supporters? Hah!

McCain has just shown that when he had to make his first executive decision, it was a complete failure.

But I can understand it.  No self-respecting Republican wants to climb aboard a sinking ship when he/she has their own political future to think about.

Sometimes old saying are the best:
1. You cant teach an old dog new tricks.
2. Oil and water don't mix.
mccainpalin.com

Great pick McCain.
OMG,OMG,OMG!!!!!!!! How desparate can you get???????? This solidifies the fact that John McTemper is not fit to lead. Sarah Palin!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE. I must add in all sincerity Thank you, thankyou, thank you........ You have just made sure Barack Obama WILL be the next President of the United States.
WOW, on thing McSurge has done right, he picked a woman. How will this fan out against Biden?
Can you say Pandering??? Talk about making the race interesting. I guess you can put Alaska in the Mac column haha

Childish attempt
i just read that the GOO[P] is considering  postponing their convention because of the oncoming hurricnae.  is this symbolic or what?  now i'm no evangelical but wouldn't those right wingers so inclined to see the divine motive in everything not wonder if there is His hand in the timing of this storm?  maybe the BIG GUY is not pleased!
It's official...Sarah Palin for McCain's veep.
The Democratic Convention reenergized me and reminded me of why I was so hopeful about Obama when the primaries started. After months of unwarranted MSM criticism and false Republican attacks, the convention provided unity, inspiration, intellect and humanity. From Ted Kennedy rising from his sickbed to support his candidate, to Michelle Obama's heartfelt words, to Hillary's fortitude and team-player attitude, to Bill's smart speech and Obama's masterful moment on the 45th anniversary of "I Have a Dream," the convention was perfect from beginning to end.

I want a president whom Americans and foreigners love and respect. I want a president whose intellect I admire and from whom I learn. I want a president who is articulate. I want to see America regain its standing in the world. Obama can bring all those things.

I'm proud of my country. I am proud of my party. And I'm proud of Barack Obama.

God bless America!
A DESPERATION MOVE BY MCSHAME.
Does he think women will come to him because of this???

Once again he shows poor Judgement. Oh well
Who cares. Obama will win and Biden will wipe the streets with her in a debate.

Obama's team kept it a secret until 1am and the messages went out at 3am.  It is 10:44 am and the word has slipped out before McCain's official announcement.  It is unfair to say that they keep a secret better.

I've been coming here to first read for news and getting a righteous anger at the skewed coverage. You guys need to have an independent audit.  I watched the convention on cspan and felt much better for not having the constant carping, interuptions, and biased interpretations.  This is your opportunity MSNBC.  You could be setting the standard, but you are looking more and more like a tabloid everyday.

Last night we witnessed the Greatest Acceptance Speech Ever Given and those who watched were privileged to see that our country can still produce another great orator and leader the likes of our first forefathers like Washington and Jefferson.

Any Democrat who can make Pat Buchanon gush with praise has got some special mojo.  Hey what's up with Morning Joe?  Did someone replace him with a thoughtful doppleganger?  Or did someone finally read him the riot act to get his act together and stop pissing off us liberal viewers?  For grins I decided to see what he had to say and he was rather moderate and humbled.  Ofcourse he had clueless witch of the Wall Street Urinal, Peggy Noonan, do the hatchet job work which was extremely pathetic, an inch high and an inch deep.

When I was 8 I watched Kennedy and Nixon on tv and I really liked Kennedy while I thought Nixon looked and sounded crooked.  Ten years later I was serving in the Army under that crooked crook Nixon and when Watergate broke out I knew he was guilty and I spent 11 months getting out of the army because I wasn't going to serve a crooked commander in chief.  We have another even more crooked commander in chief in office now with another crooked repugnant one trying to fool us into allowing him to wreck our country and military.

Four years ago I saw a young black man give a great speech and I felt that same spark of hope and awe that here was our new John Kennedy.  While an ardent Kerry supporter I was thinking why couldn't we have this new guy be our presidential nominee and now 4 years later my wish has come true that we have a new American Hero, a true Champion of the People.

What we witnessed last night was not a Spike Lee production but a Norman Rockwell production as Barack Obama rolled out his masterful bio video before his awesome speech.  Barack Obama was not aiming his speech and video at Black America he was aiming at White America, right at the hearts of the heartland and all I can say is he scored a big bullseye.  While Hillary rolled out a snappy rock-n-roll video the other night Barack unveiled a video of classical American images, music and values.

This was political theater of the first order, a show that Hollywood will drool over for decades with envy wishing they could have produced a show so riveting and inspirational.  Only the Mile High Stadium could have held Obama's Mile High and Mile Deep speech.  He spoke with a passion and intelligence not seen for far too long in our land and his voice echoed mightily across the Rockies and our country.

He wrote this speech himself and we can see the rise of a master craftsman of rhetoric.  A master orator who is above and beyond anything we've seen since John Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt.

We have a choice between a truly gifted and intelligent academician who graduated at the top of his class or a dunce who could barely graduate at the bottom of his.  We've already had 8 years of the most ignorant dishonest fool to disgrace the Oval Office ever, can we afford another 4 or 8 of yet another mental midget suffering from alzheimer's already?

Barack Obama proved beyond any shadow of doubt that he is the leader our country, our people and the world needs now.  He is ready to lead us into the 21st Century, to serve as a wise commander in chief who won't murder thousands of our brave soldiers for his own ambitions while keeping us safe from those who would and have harmed us.

Barack Obama fired a Surface to Air Missile last night and he shot down the Flip Flop Express in grandest fashion with his mighty bolt of truth.  "Dunce" McCain had better hope he knows where his eject button is because his campaign has been shot down in flames.

After a week of the best convention I've ever witnessed since watching them since 1968 we now know who the real party of family values is.  We now see how false and misleading the repugnant ones have been since some clueless old geezer brought us the lies of VooDoo Economics, yeah piss on us economics for all of us who aren't millionaire or billionaire elitists.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!  The only True Choice of Real Americans!
Palin -- ready to lead ;)
After hearing about the Repig attack ads and the supposed "response" (which could have been written without seeing the speech), I've concluded that maybe the GOP should concentrate writing a new book, "The Power of Negative Thinking".  Neo-con groups can buy them up the way they did the Corsi book and give them away free to friends and supporters. They might as well do this, becuawe it's clear they have no REAL response to Obama's speech or to Obama's ideas. This is the lamest "response" I've ever heard in a campaign. The only silver linging for them is the chance Gustav offers to cut the unpopular and unwanted shrub from their line-up. Otherwise, it looks to me like they got butkis.
I'm not sure the McOld camp was keeping secrets...With Biden as Obama's VP, none of the GOP front runners could compete in a debate with Joe. So, I believe they made a last minute switch. Palin is also a weak choice. Few delegates in Alaska, No resume, cannot pass the Commander in Chief test. Not someone who is a heartbeat away from the Presidency.
She will likely be right up there with Dan Quayle--  an unknown with no experience in the national spotlight.  McCain just gave away ANY chance of becoming POTUS.  In my not-so-humble opinion, Ridge, Huckabee, Romney would have served him much better.

Obama/Biden will win in November.
This was American political theatrics at its best. We're not living in horse and buggy times, but the banners, the "celebrity" status, the confetti--these have always been our way to celebrate when we have a candadate we want very much. The week was awesome.

Obama's speech was awesome. He is the first political candidate I've heard in oh, say, 40 years, deliver an acceptance speech with so much transparency of issues and political stance. No more slogan, one-liner campaigning. The Republican party has lost its vision if it ever had one, and no party should be allowed to rule that hates the people they rule.

I only wish I had never had to leave Denver.

Obama speaks Truth to Power. Yes.
I think it is a smart choice. She isn't a white guy.
I applaud it.

Not vetted nationally is a risk and I bet Biden will run circles around her in a debate.
Hillary supporters and independent women would have to be crazy to be swayed by McCain's pick.  Reproductive choice is not about abortion, it's about a woman's right to privacy with her own body.  A person who is a VP and doesn't understand the difference is a scary person to put in control of the country.  A lot like letting that air head Monica Goodling vet attorneys for the Department of Justice.
