Palin: Pros and cons

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008 11:55 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The pick of Sarah Palin caught almost everyone by surprise. Most signs last night seemed to point to Pawlenty, but the McCain camp proved it can keep a secret REALLY well.

This was a bold move in this historic election, and a play for those Clinton supporters. Palin is a social conservative, and her views on abortion won't play well with most Democratic women. But this election has been a case study in identity politics. We'll see if she peels away some women.

The potential to grab some of those women voters is perhaps the best asset Palin brings to a McCain ticket. She also reinforces McCain's maverick image. She bucked her own party, launching an ethics investigation into the state party chairman with regard to his dealings with oil companies in the state. And being from Alaska, she's the ultimate outsider. She also reinforces McCain's drilling message -- though she's for drilling in ANWR; McCain is not. She also represents the next generation of Republican leaders -- she's a fresh face.

But there are some potential pitfalls as well. Palin is currently under legislative investigation herself, accused of firing the state's public safety commissioner for not firing her former brother-in-law.

"A legislative panel has launched a $100,000 investigation to determine if Palin dismissed Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire the trooper, Mike Wooten," the AP wrote earlier this month. "Wooten went through a messy divorce from Palin's sister. Palin has denied the commissioner's dismissal had anything to do with her former brother-in-law. And she denied orchestrating the dozens of telephone calls made by her husband and members of her administration to Wooten's bosses. Palin said she welcomes the investigation: 'Hold me accountable.'"

Although she's not linked to them, Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young are facing legal/ethical troubles. In fact, Stevens' trial will start in late September, so the Alaska Republican Party is a mess. And Palin's trooper trouble could play into that.

It will be interesting to see which story line catches on: "Palin, the reformer/maverick", or "Palin, under investigation?"

Ironically, Republicans have hit Obama on not being ready to be president, not ready to be commander in chief, because of his limited national experience. But Palin has only been governor of Alaska for less than two years and will surely face questions of whether she would be ready to step in as president. Of course, Republicans will point out that the difference is McCain and his experience are at the TOP of the ticket.

Additionally, it's not clear she would give any geographical advantage. Alaska has been solidly red -- it's only gone Democratic once (1964) since it became a state. Does she help in the West? It's not clear.

On the issues, she is anti-abortion rights and is a hunter and fisher. In fact, she's a card-carrying lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

The 44-year-old, Idaho-born Palin is Alaska's first woman governor and the state's youngest governor as well. Palin, a graduate of the University of Idaho (majored in political science and journalism), was elected mayor of the town of Wasilla when she was 32. After she lost a bid to be lieutenant governor in 2002 -- by less than 2,000 votes, raising her statewide profile -- she became chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Before getting into politics, she helped run her husband's family commercial fishing business, according to the Almanac of American Politics. She also did work as a TV sports reporter.

She was described by the Anchorage Press as "a small-town, angel-faced mother of four, an avid hunter and a fisher with a killer smile who wears designer glasses and heels, and hair like modern sculpture, who's taking it to the boys ever so softly."

On the personal side, she played high school basketball and her team won the state championship in 1982. She was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda." According to the Almanac, she was Miss Wasilla in 1984 and competed in the Miss Alaska contest. She eloped with her high school boyfriend.

He picks a former beauty queen GO FIGURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look Out Cindy she Is YOUNGER AND PRETTIER!!!!!!

Obama-Biden 08
YES!!!  A bold choice!
Andra Mitchell stated, "She smoked marajuana when it was legal in Alaska but didn't like it?"

How many times did she have to get high before she came to that conclusion? When she decided to become an extreme right-wingnut?

BTW, nice cheerleaders on the stage in Dayton. McCain's in the back going 23 skidoo.
Did you ever do any Pros & Cons on Obama? There's enought to make it a wonder that the Dems would even consider this racially charged abomination as a Pres. candidate ... but the standards are farless for liberals, that's for sure.
McCain's northern exposure.
What a joke. This bimbo has MUCH less experience than Obama does. And let's face it, with McCain's age, his VP selection is much more important, and should/will be more closely looked into.

She brings absolutely nothing to the table.
wow... what a gift to obama. who is advising McCain..... i am actually ALMOST starting to feel sorry for this guy!
A WEAKER GOP TICKET

In an OBAMA-BIDEN versus McCain-Palin race, Obama-Biden is by far the stronger ticket. By putting a woman with ZERO foreign policy experience one heartbeat away from the presidency in a time of war, McCain showed terrible judgment and proof that Republicans know they're going to LOSE this election.

If McCain wanted to show he's a maverick or if he wanted to attract Hillary women, he would've picked a pro-choice veep. Biden's work on women trumps whatever Sarah Palin has ever achieved and makes the veep debate a sure win for Biden. McCain secures alaska and loses Michigan that Romney might've delivered.

THE OBAMA CAMP COULDN'T BE HAPPIER WITH MCCAIN'S TERRIBLE PICK.
So, you have to be a cheerleader, literally, or a beauty pageant winner to catch McCain's eye as a woman?  The former head of HP must have been too independent minded for him....or not attractive enough!!!!!  I think that she was a powerhouse and would have attracted mainstream women.  Now he can pander to the RNC base and lose anyway.
The RNC is gearing up for dirty.  It's going to be OH!! Those demonic democrats!  They're going to take our guns.  They're going to abort our babies and force gays and lesbians into our lives.  The selection of Palin is as bad as Dan Quayle in 88.  Of course they won by using the demonic democrat BS.  Average Americans are not going to buy this divisive, fear mongering tactic again.  VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN
So McPervert picks a beauty queen nearly half his age to be his mate.  Sound familiar?
This gimmick "a la Dan Quayle" is a gift to the Democrats.

This latest instance of poor judgment by McCain may be the first step towards the demise of the Republican ticket.
At least McCain knows how to NOT ignore qualified female candidates.  I would love to see Obama attack her for her "lack of experience" considering that he has the same problem.  This is a pick that puts my party (the Democrats) in a bad spot.
Yeeaaahh....I am sure she is a decent person.  But this is a fluff choice and a attempt at vote grabbing.  Given McCain's record towards women, I can see her being used to snag as many hillary supporters as possible, then shuffled off to attend funerals and mall openings while the 'men' work...

Saddest part...watch them PUMA's flock.  They dont care about issues...only about gender.
Way to go McCain. You are against so many women's rights, yet you try to hoodwink the American public by choosing a woman (who by the way is under investigation)as your running mate? Puhleeze! Nice try. You talk about experience? She has less than Obama. How would she run our country once you are in the nursing home diagnosed with alzheimers? With your track record of voting againt women is appalling and to choose a woman as your running mate is even more damning! Give it up Grandpa.. this country is ready for a change, and you are not it!!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!

Obama/Biden '08
Again, putting a woman on the ticket to get Hillary supporters insults those supporters and Hillary. McCain just told women supporting Hillary that he thinks they supported her because she is a woman. Somehow, I don't think this is an "any woman will do" sort of thing.

Talk about no experience. Do you think those years as a Wasilla city councilwoman will reassure voters she has what it takes to step into the oval office when McCain dies?
Breaking: BIG OIL taps Palin for McCain VP!
To all the Democrats who said "if we can't have Hillary we will vote for McCain" I offer a qoute from Toby Keith..."How do you like me now?".

Feminists everywhere who supported Hillary simply because she was a woman should , in reality, be OUTRAGED at this blatant pandering, patronizing ploy to attract your vote.
This further accentuates McCains philosophy of "whatever it takes to get ELECTED, not to get the nations problems solved."

I hope this is a wake-up call to any Democrat who was even remotely considering crossing party lines this Nov.

Sadly, while it should be a slap in the face, there are some who still believe this geezer has integrity.
McCain picked Palin because he thinks women are stupid and will vote for him just because he has a woman on the ticket.  You can tell McCain thinks women are stupid with his Hillary Clinton based ad where he states that Obama "didn't like it" when Clinton did things and thus didn't pick her for VP.  He thinks women are so stupid that they will vote for him just because they are miffed.  A version of "heck hath no fury like a woman scorned."

He has shown he can get some women, like the Clinton delegate in his other ad who actually *is* stupid, since she thinks McCain is pro Roe v. Wade.  But, I think most women are smarter than this.

Having said that, if a large block of women really *are* that stupid, all I can say to McCain is... he picked the *wrong* woman.  He's trying to play to sterotypes, but another stereotype you can throw out there is that one thing women don't like is women who they think are prettier than they are.  Picking a former beauty queen isn't going to sit well with some women, either.

Again, I don't think women are that stupid.  The women I know (wife, mother, daughter) scare me with how much smarter they are than me :-).  But, if McCain wants to play to sterotypes, he screwed up.
FIRST READ:  Ironically, Republicans have hit Obama on not being ready to be president, not ready to be commander in chief, because of his limited national experience. What international experience does Obama have?  A "circus" trip when he had no legal right to negotiate anything.

A difference with Palin, too, is that she actually showed up and WORKED in her job for two years vs Obama who has worked 143 days in the last 3+ years but pads his resume that he has been a US Senator.  He has been but frankly it's in name only
An interesting and unexpected choice. I'll be curious to see how it plays with the independents and democrats that are considering McCain. The little we hear about her puts her squarely in the very conservative camp, which I wouldn't think would appeal to dems and indies. I can't imagine somone that supported Hillary Clinton and her no drilling in ANWR and pro-choice record being to excited by Palin. It looks like a bold choice, but I'm not sure it is the right choice. We will see in November.
Good choice.  I wanted Romney because of his values and stances on being anti-abortion, but Palin has lived it and will do well.  Romney can serve in McCains administration.

I hope the Dems are running scared now.  :)
If they think this will help with getting Dem women votes, that must be smoking something. I smell utter and total desperation from the McCain camp. The Alaska issues will be the gift that keeps on giving for the Dems.
Well, looks like McCain just  lost the election!  What a ridiculous person to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.  Will she wear her "Miss Alaska" tiara and sash to the debate?  If McCain thinks this is what a woman qualified to be president looks like, he really has lost his marbles!

Thanks for the early Christmas gift, John McSame!
Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire.  McCain is rolling his dice.  I don't know if it will work.  I really don't think he'll get many women aside from the PUMAs and I think they were either Republican to begin with or didn't care about politics and were just voting for a bra.

This is getting more and more interesting.  I'll admit that.

But she may be his downfall as well.  The people who won't for for Hillary because of her gender may also switch from McCain to Obama.  It may not change anything really lol.  And some of the McCainites are going to have trouble with her policies and burgeoning scandals.

Kudos on the Maverick showing up again.  But still...

Obama/Biden 08/12!!
The media, and clearly John McCain, are suggesting that if they put a woman on the ticket, that women are dumb enough to vote for her simply because she's a woman.....give us a little credit, please!!  Where's the thought to how she will do taking over when, and I mean when, something happens to McCain?  McCain put her on as a puppet and a token and nothing more.
Biden will eat her lunch. Rush is desperate! he doesn't even believe his own support of her!
"Oh, my goodness, hang "em up, yeah."  Palin's response in a debate to a question on capital punishment. But she evidently doesn't want to be hung up on an investigation of her firing her ex'x brother. Either Mcbush is too senile to know you don't pick a running mate who's the target of an active investigation, or this woman is actually the dream-choice of the DNC.  In either case, Biden is going to feed her her head during the debates. Can we say, STUPID CHOICE? She won't win the Clintonistas, the hard-core PUMAs, and even if she did, so what, most of that fabled 18 million has fallen in love with Obama. And Palin is so virulently anti-abortion and pro-execution that few Dems will cross over to her.
Seriously? Under investigation in less than two years? Even for Alaska, that's astounding.

And as far as experience and 'Ready to Lead', in McCain's case, at his age, it does matter as if she were at the top of the ticket. A governor of less than two years for the 47th most populated state already embroiled in an ethics investigation for handling family business on the state dime is somebody who's 'Ready to Lead' at a moment's notice. Seriously?

Could this be a more shameless pander to women voters?

Can't wait for Biden to pick her apart.

Now we know that the GOP is about playing on the electorate's emotion. McCain is big time desperate and is a sure loser going forward.
"She also did work as a TV sports reporter."

It just gets better and better. She's like a character out of the old sitcom Northern Exposure. Did her first boyfrined get killed by space junk? (remember that scene with the casket shaped like a broken up satellite?) Boy, that was a funny show. I feel like, with Miss Wasilla as a VP candiate,  Northern Exposure has come to life!
I think this is a swing and a miss for McLame.  it's defiinitely a reactionary pick and a not-so-subtle attempt to peel off bitter HRC supporters.

Tough for McLame...Great for BHO.
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THE RUPLICAN PARTY. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. SHE HAS NO EXPERIENCE. He just lost his election. This is not hollywood we are voting for leaders for united state. I will not vote for McCain after this. Has he lost his mind.
This tells us ALOT about the respect McCain has for the Persidency of the United States.  Can a candidate be impeached?
Before you jump on the investigation issue, you migt want to correct the record, FIRST READ, Palin herself REQUESTED the investigation!  And, some feel it was like "payback" for going after some big dogs on ethics.

Gee, Sarah's a lifetime member of the NRA.  Suppose Obama will run an ad accusing her of being bitter, clinging to her guns and religion?
Well...gotta give McCain props for having a pair...and of course I like seeing a woman on the ticket...but I think she has like zero credibility (mayor...2 years as govenor...I guess that's not bad...but Miss Alaska Runner Up?  Lost all credibility when I heard that)...I really think that she isn't going to be ready to be on a national stage...we shall see.
I am an Advid Hillary supporter and I am still not impressed with Barack Obama. But one thing I know is that this woman does not represent what Hillary stands for. We do not need another Oil and Gas supporter in or near the White House. To all Hillary supporters who state that they are going to support McCain. Please consider this. I am not a big fan of Obama but putting McCain in the Presidency will just give us four more years of the worst polices I have ever lived through. He is not a maverick. He will send more men to war and and continues to send our jobs overseas. Please this VP choice of his is more proof that McCain does not care about the average person. He just wants your vote because he put a woman on the ticket. I have always believed that Obama did not have enough experience to be President compared to Hillary. But this woman has even less. McCain may not survive four years and if this woman becomes President all of America will suffer even more. So think about your choices very carefully. Do you want a change from the last eight years or do you want more of the same or something even worse.
I will vote for Obama because I do not want four more years of problems and I will listen to the one person I believed in this year - Hillary and vote Obama/Biden
PROS:  John McCains choice has guarinteed that BARACK OBAMA will become the next President of the United States. Thank you John McCain for your poor JUDGEMENT.
It will be interesting to see which story line catches on: "Palin, the reformer/maverick", or "Palin, under investigation?"
*************************************************
How can you be vetted under investigation?  I guess crooks know to get aroung that.

It's a gimmick. Sad that she doesn't understand that she is being used. She was picked only because of her gender and youth and pretty face. So much for women's rights and being taken seriously for a person's talents and abilities. We know Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton. Palin should run for the hills and preserve whatever political capital she has left.
Another example of McOld's poor judgement.  I can't tell which, Does Palin make McOld look older or does McOld make Palin look too young?  Either way, poor judgement. McCain just conceded the middle, moderate voters.  That is HUGE because he would have received most of the neocons anyway.
John McCain does not understand women. Just having a woman on the ticket does not make 18 million women flocking to his door.  Women are smarter than that! If he picks up 3 million women, he would have received those votes anyway.  Those are the seriously disappointed women who were Hillary supporters.
The debates will be so much fun to watch!! Actually, Biden will have to be careful not to overpower such a light weight.
I am a Hillary supporter.   Now that McCain has picked a Women for VP, I am asking all the females out there to vote-if it's time for a black man to run for President then it's time we have a women in the White House for VP.  Who knows, maybe in 2012 we will see history again.  Hillary vs Sara for President. WoW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unlike Obama's first "test" selecting Joe Biden, this is a major screw-up by McCain.  He has only 60 days to shop her around the country; She kills the experience argument (she's just a heart-beat from the Presidency); he insults women by thinking it's just about gender and not issues; she has a screwed up family; she has no foreign policy experience; no economic experience; no experience in how federal government works.  Frankly, she's hot looking, but that's about it.  The "empty suit" argument goes both ways...
Palin sounds like a conservative in women's clothing. As a woman, I am insulted that the Republicans think I am so naive that I will vote for someone in a skirt over someone who has a clear plan for this country and who time and again has demonstrated that he has the vision, the intelligence, and the leadership to get us out of the last 8 years. My vote is for Barack!
Of course, she'll peel away some women. That's got to be the #1 reason for her as a pick. Obama shouldn't lose too many votes because A) women will see that McCain picked her mainly as a prop to get female votes and B) her pro-Life, NRA card carrying stance are at odds with most women, particularly Democratic women.

I want to know this - who is raising her 4 month old Down Syndrome baby while she campaigns all over the country for the next 2 months? How can you be the vice president and also be a good, involved mom to an 8 month old? At least the Obama kids are school aged and being taken care of by their grandma when Michelle isn't home. Going back to work after the birth of your child is one thing (I went back after both of my children's births) but campaigning and traveling all over the country (and, if elected, the world) when you have a child that young is another thing. If she's the Republican's idea of Super Mom, I'm not impressed.
Sarah Palin is a very risky pick. It is akin to a major league team in the midst of a pennant race reching back to the minor leagues and bringing up an unproven AA prospect phenom and making them the #2 pitcher in the rotation. The question is is she up to it or will she fold under the pressure? Is she Fernando Valenzuela or Todd Van Poppel.
I guess the McCain camp thinks that women will vote for a woman candidate regardless of who she is or what her abilities or experiences or qualifications for the vp post are. Just a short time ago Palin said she didn't even know what the vp did. To McCain, we are just the 'weaker sex' so that means we don't act with our brains. Just like him to treat us like idiots.
A pathetic move by the McCain campaign to woo the disappointed Hillary supporters. McCain is not a young man; the idea of Palin possibly becoming President is scary at best. Talk about NO experience. Very poor choice. Obama is our man.
