Palin's relationship with Stevens

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008 1:40 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Doug Adams
Ted Stevens, the grand-daddy of Alaskan politics, has a wary relationship with the new Republican VP pick -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

When Palin was running for governor in 2006, she ousted long time Alaska fixture Frank Murkowski in a hard fought primary. Stevens and Murkowski are long time friends and Palin was able to defeat the sitting governor by running on ethics and clean government reformist platform.

Stevens ultimately came to endorse Palin, but it was late in the game. He endorsed her less than three weeks before the general election, although he did cut a television advertisement for her.

In July of last year, Palin shocked and angered Stevens by publicly criticizing him for his role in the VECO scandal and called for him to speak out about it.

"I think I join others in wanting to know of the senator's innocence," Palin said. "Right now, we're not hearing anything."

When Stevens was indicted last month for month on corruption charges, Palin said the indictment "rocks the foundation of the state" and added that she shares with others "dismay" and concern.

Stevens is running for re-election to the Senate this year, and he is in a tough race. He survived his primary last week, despite the fact that Palin backed his opponent. But in the general election, Stevens is trailing in the polls to the popular Democratic mayor of Anchorage, Mark Begich.

But the relationship between Palin and Stevens is not completely frosty, and he needs her help. Palin is by far the most popular politician in Alaska right now, with approval ratings above 80 percent.

They came together this summer for a joint press conference on energy initiatives. Both support drilling in ANWR, and Stevens has lent tacit support for Palin's effort to build and pay for a natural gas pipeline through Alaska.

And Stevens went out of his way to compliment Palin this summer in interviews, saying she was on the right track as governor, praising her plans to handle the state's energy crisis and telling Alaskans she'd make a good vice presidential pick for McCain.

"People come up and ask me what is she like and how is she doing," he said. "I've been asked that, and I've told them I think she would be a good vice president."

I applaud the way you seasoned political veterans have been able tio keep a straight face in light of this rediculous pick.

You've got to be objective and not say what 85% of Americans are thinking right now.... it's over for the GOP.
Sarah Palin is under her own ethics violations.  I have heard that being explained away as helping her abused sister.  While I applaud her wanting to help her sister with this situation, surely, she could have found a method that didn't abuse the power of her position.  I think that is more of the same that we currently have in power.
Did NE1 watch her speech?  She looked like she was addressing the PTA!  He really doesn't get it!!!
I must say, the Republican party is good at picking up the "single issue" voters.  Now they have the "woman-on-the-ticket or nothing" voters who formally supported Hillary, and the anti-abortion voters.  But will that be enough to win?  Hoepfully not, because Palin is woefully underqualified to be president if 72 year old McCain can't make it through 4 years.
Will this energize Hillary, and Bill to wholeheartedly stump for Obama/Biden '08? Hillary wanted to make history first, but most importantly, Palin stands for everything Hillary doesn't!

McCain will lose by a landlide. You heard it hear first!
So - she's also a back stabbing bish.

Way to go - John McCain with the total lack of judgment.

YOU will do well with the continued destruction of the Republican Party.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Boo hoo.  A newsweek thing saays she is committed to fighting corruption in her Party. Fighting corruption in the GOP will keep her too busy to run for Veep, I should think. Maybe she can investigate herself while she's at it.
John McCain, we women are not stupid. You cannot say you did not get Clinton, well here is a different woman in the same pant suits. Clinton had experience and so far as I can see, being a Mayor of 7000 people is not experience to be President.

But this confirms that you put your ambitions before this country if you tell me that Sarah is the most qualified candidate in the republican party to be vice president. At least Sen.Obama picked a candidate ready to be president.
Klondike Barbie.....political scandals sold separately.

I just can't wait until the diametrics are made clear during the debate:

Biden: "I've called Slobadan Milosevic a war criminal to his face!"

B: "I'm a friend of Hillary Rodham Clinton, you, madame, are no Hillary Rodham Clinton!"

Barack and Joe 08/12
After witnessing a milestone in America's history - the nomination of an African American by one of the two major political parties - I couldn't believe it this morning when the news lead with more speculation on McCain's VP choice.  At that time, no announcement had been made.  I was also surprised that a conservative speech writer for Ronald Regan was selected to provide the analysis of Obama's speech (this mornning's Today Show).  It's as if NBC felt compelled to counter the impact of a significant moment for Obama, his party, and our country. This is not the role of an unbiased news organization.
This is a crazy pick.  There goes the experience question and the commander in chief question.   This is beyond demeaning it is breathtakingly stupid.   It shows  that McCain really is Grand Pa McCain.  There is no way that the “Women’s vote will go for someone who has no place even been on a national ticket.  It’s insult to think that  Hillary’s former women supporters  are so gender prejudiced that they will overlook the fact that Palin stands for the opposite of everything they believe in.  Obama was right if not kind,  MaCain does not get it.  McCain for retirement in O8
It's sad to see a decent and honest Politician
like Sara Palin get forever tarnished by association
with the gutter politics of McCain, Bush and of course the man behind it all Karl Rove.  It's a sad day for the Palin Family. I guess some people will sell their soul for anything.
OK, this proves McCain is indeed a "Manchurian Candidate"; bent upon the destruction of the Republican Party from within!

Perhaps this is payback for the treatment he recieved in 2000!

Palin is no Steven spawn or pawn.  Look into it.  Palin has been the one standing up to the oil dominated legislature and congressional delegation.

Dig Deep - As you get to know her you will see someone authentic and unpretentious.
She sounds like a very talented  hot ticket.
I am surprised that Mccain selected an inexperienced celebrity though.  Isn't the first responsibility of the nominee to select a VP who is unambiguously prepared to step in on a moments notice to become Commander in Chief?

I will let others decide what that says about McCains judgement and ability to make a rational and sound decision.

This appears that this team doesn't plan to do any governing and allowing Karl Rove to continue to make all decisions based on political expediency.
Just exactly like the past 8 years.
The city of San Jose, California has more than 250,000 more people than the entire state of Alaska.  If he nominated someone whose only meaningful experience had been less than two years as the mayor of San Jose, what would you say.  The mayor of San Jose actually would have a lot more experience dealing with urban issues, dealing with multinational corporations, creating jobs, etc.

Those repubs trying to compare her inexperience to Obama's miss the point (most likely deliberately).  First of all, 4 years in the Senate is far more relevant than 2 years as gov of a tiny state. (she hasn't even proven herself there yet).  And his experience prior is far mor relavant than mayor of Cicely Alaska, or wherever it was.

But the key point is, McCain had the duty to pick his replacement to be president.  He looked at a number of candidates, and he decided that this person had enough experience for the job.  He just gave his opinion for how much experience a president needs.  He can no longer with a straight face tell the American people that Obama does not have the experience when he just made this decision.

I wonder if this was a desperation switch after Obama's speech.  Sure seemed like Pawlenty was the guy.

I think McCain makes two big mistakes - 1) thinking that Clinton supporters will come to him instead of being insulted.  2) Thinking that the way to balance old is by going young.  I always said that he, as much as Obama, needed experience at VP.  People look at McCain and think he could definitely die in office.  They want to know someone can pick it up.  He needed a good 50 to 60 year old - someone with experience but young enough to not be a health issue.

This looks so much like the Ferraro hail mary.  And the bottom line is it looks a ton like an affirmative action hire.

Looking back, this will be the week that decided the election of 2008.
PALIN HAS HER OWN OPEN STATE INVESTIGATION TO WORRY  ABOUT.

MANY ALASKANS ARE VERY UPSET THAT SHE USED HER OFFICE TO FIRE HER STATE TROOPER BROTHER. NOW THEY ARE SAYING HE BEAT THE SISTER, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT ALASKANS ARE SAYING

ALASKANS ARE SAYING SHE'S NOT TRUST WORTHY, LIED ABOUT USING HER OFFICE TO FIRE HER BROTHER IN LAW

MANY VOICED HER INEXPERIENCED AND TOTAL DISFACTION WITH THE JOB SHE'S DOING IN THE STATE.

THIS WOMAN HAS A 4 MONTH OLD CHILD WITH DOWNS SYNDROME, NOT A MOM WHO SHOULD BE TRYING TO OBTAIN THE #2 JOB IN OUR COUNTRY, IN ADDITION TO HER COMPLETE INEXPERIENCE

ALASKA HAS A POPULATION OF 700,000 AND SHE MANAGED A CITY OF LESS THAN 8,000

SENATOR MCCAIN CLEARLY CHOSE BASED ON HER BEING PRO-CHOICE AND AGAINST GAYS VS

CHOOSING AN ECONOMIST THAT HELP STRUGGLING AMERICANS WHO ARE LOOSING HOMES, JOBS, HIGH GAS, GROCERIES

CLEARLY HE JUST DOES NOT GET IT

AND WHAT A SLAP IN THE FACE OF ALL WOMEN

TRYING TO USE THE HILLARY FACTOR TO HIS ADVANTAGE WILL NOT WORK WITH HARD WORKING WOMEN
i can't think of anybody better to pick for McCain.

What she lacks in experience she certainly makes up for with sex appeal.

Her policy has worked for Alaska, and she is certainly a washington outsider, which i think is very important for this election after the speech by Obama last night.

Gives her great exposure to the nation in case McCain loses to Obama, so the Republicans will have a up and coming star for the 2012 race.  Smart move all the way around from my viewpoint.
Yes the party is having problems my friends.  My new VP pick is under investigation just like Sen. Stevens from Alaska.  Do I care?  Hell no.  Can you say
Peee OH DoubleU?  I got my reasons and if that's not good enough for you you're no patriot.  Let's forget the facts folks.  Give me and Sarah your votes and I promise you'll get your moneys worth if you got enough of it that is.
Palin the SECOND COUPLE.......is corrupt....as Stevens
This is facinating... Could we please get some analysis from Chuckie T. on this choice and what it means for the dynamics of the upcoming election?

I am not going to say anything about Palin's experience, or lack thereof as pointed out by others.

I have defended Obama's youth and experience by listing several charactertics and qualifications I believe a person needs to have in order to be a good President or Vice Presdient. And none of those characterestics have anything to do with prior experience as a Commander & Chief or as a person with expertise on economic matters.

But I will question Palin as to whether she has those charcterestics and qualifications because I do not know much about her. I have not even heard her give a talk or speech, or to express her dieas for this country. Is Palin nuts or rationale? Is she a team player? Can she obsorb and quickly comprehend large  amounts of data and material? Would she have the ability and wherewithall to appoint good managers? Would she allow them to do their jobs? Does she have emmpathy for people? Is she sensitive to the needs of people. Is she honest and does she have integrity? Does she read, write and speak well. Is she a good communicator? Can she incite people? Is she open to the ideas of others and able to see the U.S. through the eyes of those living in other parts of the world? Does she have an aptitude for leadership.

These of a few of the characterestics and qualifications I had listed and felt that Obama possessed. And I defended Obama. Not by saying he had prior experience as a Commander & Chief or as an economic expert. But because I felt he did possess these cahacterestics and qualifications. I can neither defend Palin nor criticize her because I just don't know enough about her to make the same judgement.

Many people including the media continue to say we do not know enough about Obama altrhough we have been exposed to Obama on a regular basis for the last year and a half. My only question would be if these people and members of the media say we still don't know enough about Obama, and they apply the same question about Palin, how in the world do they expect us to get to know this young lady in a 2 1/2 month period.

And the excuse that she is not running for President but VP will not fly. In the words of John McCain, she would be one heart beat away from having to assume the duties of the President and therefore should be well known by the Amercian people before she is entrusted with this role.
POINT 1:  The relations with Steven should be check good.

POINT 2:  She is a person that have last experience then borack.

POINT 3:  Mr McCain is 72 year old has cancer in his pass.

POINT 4:  People shouldn't waste a vote just because she is a WOMAN(please give me a BREAK)

TIC FOR TAC--First Black man Democrat, First Woman for the republicans
copy cat republicans copy cat republicans--that all you have.

God protect borack obama, God protect McCain--
But we all americans have think first--do you want if tragety struck to the president do you rather have Joe Biden with experience or you rather have have a woman with no experience at all and only been a governor for 2 years and no foreign experience at all.

THINK BEFORE YOU GO VOTING.
This choice is dumbfounding.  or maybe just dumb?  On the Stephanie Miller show this morning someone commented that Palin makes Dan Quayle look like George Washington. And, they mentioned that Palin was runner-up in a Miss Alaska pageant.

huh?  he picks a former beauty pageant contestant? as in, dumb stereotypes?  as in, celebrity??

What was he thinking?  Does he really think that any woman will appease women??  Doesn't he get it?  Hillary supporters wanted Hillary because she's smart and experienced.  As Stephanie Miller put it this am, it's not about being a chick.

DOES McCain actually think?????

56 y.o. white woman in Purple AZ with a brain.
She has no experience.  Small Alaska?  What has she done?
Two words ... Harriet Myers. Except I think it's a little harder to withdraw a vp pick than a Supreme Court pick. In any case, looks like John McCain didn't want to choose a woman, and when forced went with the nice lady he met once who seemed like she wouldn't challenge him and would fit his opinion of women. Understandably, the much stronger women in the Republican party have issued tepid responses.
This lady is one tough mamma!  I can very much see her holding her own against Joe Biden.  After all she stood her ground against Ted Stevens (who is also a Republican) and he if i'm not mistaken has been in the Senate even longer than Joe Biden.

I was also impressed by the fact that she and her husband decided to keep their child knowing he was going to be born with Downs Syndrome.  That is a heartbreak but one that many women can certainly relate to.

She is also getting ready to send her baby off to Iraq.  That too is tough for any mom.  I admire her for that!

I watched as John McCain announced her as his VP pick and I don't know what it is...but she made him look younger and he was actually beaming.  It was nice to see.  They make a great looking ticket.  Him with the age and experience.  Her with less experience in governmental affairs but tough in what she has done.  In just two years, she has actually done more than Obama has in accomplishments!

Laura, Boston
I feel that Gov. Palin is what we need in the white house. She is the combination of Reagain and Ms. Clinton in one person. She completes McCain. She know what it takes to run a house and the needs of a mother. Obama can never say that.
Does John McCain think Sarah Palin deserves equal pay for equal work?  I'm sure he can work POW into that answer too.
This uneasy leaning towards negative relationship with "Uncle Ted" Stevens could be a plus for her.  If McCain were to win, then Palin could do what Gore stared to do when he was VP, review and reduce regulations and other problems.  I remember that Gore talked about the rules for floor polish taking up several pages.  That is what she should be doing if McCain wins.
I can't help but wonder why the party of family values
would give recognition to a women who with a new
infant suffering from a condition that needs all
the love and care from it's mother would put her out
on the campaign trail. Barack Obama has been accused
of putting ambition before country. ( Not family)
Seems to me her ambition is put before anything.
I hope mothers of children will not vote for this
ticket. At least Hillary did not ask Bill to stay
at home with Chelsea. As a  74 year old mother of
three, who is so grateful that they were all healthy,
and with so much admiration for the Moms of
children with Down's Syndrome and other conditions
which require time, love and often plenty of money
for care, this attractive, wellspoken women turns
me off completely and make me repect Hillary so
much more than I did before.
WHATA GREAT CHOICE, RUNNING ON SUBSTANCE NOT HIP HOP BULL
If John's pick was honest and sincere, and not pandering...they will do well, and good for them.

BUT, if this is a political game he's played, then he's just doomed his financial backers.

Obama/Biden 08
