Obama reacts to McCain VP pick

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008 4:59 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
PITTSBURGH, PA -- Obama reacted to his rival's pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate and walked back a statement put out by his campaign that called the governor inexperienced.

"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person, obviously a terrific story, personal story. And you know, I'm sure that she will help make the case for the Republicans," he told a small group of reporters on Friday. "Unfortunately, the case is more of the same. And so ultimately John McCain is at top of ticket. As I indicated in my speech last night, I think that he wants to take the country in the wrong direction. I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him in in his policies."

He said the fact that a woman had been chosen as the vice presidential candidate of a major party "is one more hit against that glass ceiling."

"I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate," he said. "I'm pleased with my choice for vice president Joe Biden. I think he's the man who can help me guide this country in a better direction and help working families."

Obama and Biden released a joint written statement earlier congratulating Palin, saying she was "an admirable person and will add a compelling new voice to this campaign.”

But a campaign also issued a statement that called into question her experience. "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," wrote spokesman Bill Burton. "Gov. Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

Obama appeared to dismiss Burton's statement. "I think that ... campaigns start getting these, uh uh, hair triggers, and the statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments," Obama said
When asked about the contradiction in the tone of the two statements.

The nominee, who toured the plant with Joe Biden, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, also made a statement in support of biodiesel.

Proof that McCain is incompetent.  Good lord.
Amazing is a good word for her. Nobody I mean nobody outside of Alaska has heard her. Anyone remember Geraldine Ferraro & how well she did for Mondale? She is strongly anti-choice and anti-environmental protection, leading the way on the slaughter of Alaskan gray wolves.

Yes, she would bring some desperately needed brain power to the ticket and beauty, but she is not enough of an enticement for most of us. Last I heard, Americans are still overwhelmingly pro-choice, and her anti-environmentalism is not appealing. I will look forward to the photos of her gunning down wolves. Just Google Palin’s scandals; there’s plenty.

The American women of this nation will not fall for this…

“No way, no how, no McCain.” (Thanks Hillary!!!)

'I'm John McCain and I approve lies, fears, and smears.' (--Lee)
How come there's no article here where you ask John McCain why he picked someone so inexperienced when he's been slamming Obama for being inexperienced???  And if he says he has experience, than what happens if something happens to him?

The hypocrisy of John McCain continues on.
Don't be surprised if in about 3-4 weeks she pulls out of the race, citing the need to care for her new child. This will have accomplished a number of things;
1. The spotlight quickly went from the Democratic Convention to McCain which he desperately needed
2. McCain will have shown his willingness to run with a woman
3. The Evangelicals will be satisfied that he does hold their values
4. She will be able to walk away with dignity and respect because she is doing it for the good of her family
5. McCain will get the running mate he really wants
6. Joe Biden will be prepping to debate her and at the last minute he will have to face somebody else (Pawlenty?)
7. Whoever replaces her will be prepping the entire time to face Joe Biden.
I know this sounds very Machiavellian, but it is a possibility the Obama camp needs to be prepared for.
Nothing but Class. Congratulates Palin and then states how her polcies reflect those of McCains. More of the same. No mention of her experience or lack thereof or pandering by McCain for picking a woman. Obama outclasses McCain to the highest degree.
Earn your place or be placed to earn!
John McCain picks Sarah Palin in hopes of winning Senator Clinton voters.  But once again "out of touch" John McCain unlike Senator Obama doesn't get it.
Senator Clinton EARNED her place as the first WOMAN to have a successful run for the White House.  However, Palin was GIVEN this opportunity to play second.  For me being a woman and hearing Palin's 1st speech trying to pull Clinton voters over to McCain simply because Palin happens to be a woman is an insult, and shows that sexism is being played but Senator Obama isn't the one playing it.   Also, due to the fact that no one knows her I feel was the wrong way to be introduced.  Almost a slap in the face.
Lastly, McCain picks Palin because he wants to win.
Obama picks Biden because he wants AMERICA to Win.
So is Country REALLY FIRST McCain?

McCain and the republicans are being very childish with the way they are handling the election, and selection process.
They say Obama doesn’t have experience, yet they repeat everything that Obama and the Democrats do.   Now, they want to run the race on CHANGE!  I agree with Bill Clinton “Sound familiar” .
No one knows anything about Palin, and her speech could have been given by those cheerleaders behind the scenes.
Pick a woman, run on change, get Clinton voters.
Can any of you really say that McCain choices have been to the benefit of COUNTRY?  No you can’t; every move he’s made while he is trying to make history and ensure he isn’t left out of the spotlight has been all to benefit himself, not even his party.

What you are saying is disgraceful!  Being a woman, an African American, young, or old should not decide your vote and if it does you have no room to talk about a racist.  John McCain is making a fool out of those that want to fall for it.  I guess if Clinton won and Obama lost then John McCain would have pick a black man!
You should feel terrible!

Don't get it twisted!

Democrats are VERY HAPPY about this pick!

Americans can not be as Stupid as McCain thinks!

It's just very sad that John McCain has no other strategies, and really hasn't "thought out of the box" other than what has already happen in the Democratic Party.  Why would you want someone to lead that is clearly a follower and can't even choose who he wants to follow; maybe Bush, maybe Obama, whose next?

Palin is a fly by night decision!  Not even her staff knew what was going on.
John McCain is starving for attention.  He wants a piece of the action.  The only problem is he knew he could never get the same response, dedication and support as Obama so he pulls one of the biggest political mistakes of all time!  What a commander-in-chief

It's amazing how republicans get so upset and can only result to personal attacks.

No substance!
John McCain admits to not knowing about the economy!  He also has only known Palin for 7 months, and only spoke to her last Sunday for the 1st time.  You better pray she doesn't make him upset or his grumpy old man personality may show!

Face it.  Republicans will not win the white house this year, and any woman that will vote for McCain simply because he put a woman on his ticket really doesn't respect the privilege of voting.

Clinton Earned Her Place in Washington, and to suggest that Palin is anywhere close to Clinton's knowledge, and experience is an insult and American should be ashamed!

Being a woman, an African American, young, or old should not decide your vote and if it does you have no room to talk about a racist.  John McCain is making a fool out of those that want to fall for it.  I guess if Clinton had won and Obama lost then John McCain would have pick a black man!

No substance!
My take is that Palin is probably a good woman and a tough pol..but her resume is lacking and she won't hold up in the long run. The GOP will make a mistake in trying to equate her with Obama. It won't wash because Obama was elected to his position and Palin was appointed. Frankly both Biden's and Obama's credentials are superior. The GOP have effectively lost the experience arguement now.

Honestly..she's probably better than Romney or Pawlenty...so I'll give McCain his due (despite more qualified GOP women available). But if they are going to try to "hijack" Clinton's campaign then it will be up to HRC herself to take Palin on very publicly.

Biden and Obama should focus on taking on McCain's judgement and foreign policy without worry of the 'experience' question anymore. Biden should tackle Palin on foreign policy and the economy...do not attack her character or social positions(this will anger women and conservatives).

It's open season on McCain now because he has basically invalidated his entire arguement against Obama. If the Democrats focus on McCain's judgement and force Palin to defend Bush/McCain policies...they will win. I'm certain HRC will not allow McCain to use Palin(who WILL draw one issue voters) as a feminist meme and Democrats don't need to attack Palin because she is basically a shield for him...it's McCain who is most vunerable now.

Older voters and women who voted for HRC b/c of percieved experience..not gender..won't be fooled. And in an unspoken fact the media won't admit..the Pat Buchanan's of the world will dismiss McCain...and there are MANY here in the South. I expect McCain number's amoung white men to erode.

The Obama campaign was smart to congradulate her...some Dems attacked her too quickly about her experience but the GOP will turn that around and use it as a distraction(sexism anyone?). The Democrats have a huge advantage now and the right plan to fight McCain; Palin only makes their job easier. Democrats just need to avoid the traps McCain is trying to set.
Somewhere in Arizona, Cindy McCain is filing for divorce. Yeah, just what we Independents are looking for....somebody who has the wealth and breadth of experience that Palin has, in case something happens to McCain. What a poor decision this is.
Uh oh... videos are already popping up of Gov Palin saying she doesn't know what a VP does.  Check out YouTube.  She thinks her current job is "cool".
Palin does seem to be a dynamic person, but she is not ready to be a heartbeat away from a 72 year old President.  And she is not demonstrating the family values that Republicans hold so dear by going onto the national campaign trail when she has a 5 month old baby.
When I read in FR that Joe Lieberman had been called by Karl Rove and asked to withdraw from the VP contention, I knew something was up.  I never believed that McCain would let Rove or Schmidt--or whoever is calling the shots at his campaign--push him into a VP choice that he is clearly uncomfortable with.  It is not a good fit at all.  While Gov. Palin may have some redeeming qualities, she is unknown and cannot even come close to competing with Hillary.  It's another example of poor judgment on McCain's part.

Obama/Biden just keeps looking better and better!!!
Sarah Palin is nothing but a stunt--a gimmick. I'm insulted as a woman that John McCain thinks he can offer up a political uterus in return for my vote. No way, no how. No McCain, No Palin. I deserve to vote for an accomplished woman with the strength and experience to do more than just introduce us to her husband and children on her first day of work.
YES! Palin is a women that makes me proud to be a female- totally the oposite feeling of Hillary! GO McCain/Palin! Now it is really time for a women to be in the White House- strong, moral and conservative- not intimidated by BIG GOV. and money power!
That's right - say good luck and then move on.  What else can you say about a pick so designd to help you win but with not designed to help you govern...and that is the point of all of this!
I think that Obama was very gracious. YOu know that he is secretly thinking WOW I have just won this election. This VP pick did not show good judgement of John McCAin's part. I look forward to seeing her stumble in a debate. What does she know about running a country? I think she should stay at home with her kids. I am a woman and really take insult that this lady would be likened to a Hillary. I think American woman will now support Obama.
So...is the "uh uh" really necessary?  I mean seriously.  Are we now that lazy we cant clean up the ums and uh from a quote...or is it something more subversive?  Just curious.
Obama walked byack that statement because, at the time Governor Palin was the Mayor of a town of 'less than ten thousand', HE was a 'community organizer', whatever that is.

As to the 'investigation', Gov. Palin invited it;  it seems her former brother-in-law, a state trooper, was charged and convicted of spousal abuse against her sister.  Sen. Biden ought to be familiar with the terms of the Violence Against Women Act; he wrote it.  It states, very clearly, that an ACCUSATION of spousal abuse will deprive the accused of their right to carry a weapon.  Police officers throughout the country were against this provision, but it passed, anyway.  To the point:  this trooper was not just accused, but convicted, but not removed from the department.  When questioned about it, it became clear to Gov. Palin that, not only was her ex-brother-in-law still, 'one the job', but others were, as well, IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW.  That, coupled with the discovery of financial irregularities, caused her to fire him.  He claimed it was political retribution.

She ASKED for an investigation to quiet the rumors.

You decide if a convicted spousal abuser should be carrying a gun-armed by the state.  I vote no, and I come from a law enforcement family.  They vote no, as well.
John McCain has made the wrong choice.  He thinks women will vote for him because his VP pick is a woman.  No Way...No How...No McCain!  We are way smarter than that!! She is a mirrow image of him....just what we don't need for the next four years!!  GO OBAMA/BIDEN!!!
Obama has so much class.  no negativity, and he goes so far as to say that sometimes his staff making comments do not reflect his own views.  (probably a flip flop to the RNC, but to me it is another great example of his desire to do the right thing)

Great speech last night, and i don't think his opinions could have been made more clear.  i can't wait for Palin and Biden to debate.  it should be a meeting of two great minds.  wish i could say that about the presidential debates...
Interesting selection.  A woman who called Sen. Clinton a whiner, who praised Sen. Obama's energy plans and middle class tax cut strategy as good for Alaskans.  She is anti-choice, anti gay rights opportunities, completely inexperienced, and a step away from being the leader the United States.  And she will pull away the female Clinton supporters?!?  More likely they will run from her in droves, and probably carry a small percentage of Republicans with them.  Someone ought to wake Senator McCain first, the next time he has to make an important decision .
Totally unvetted..

Obama/Biden '08
Always the gentleman.  She's got less experience than he does, and far worse judgment. It looks like a desperation, hail Mary pass-type move by a man who may not be very honest with voters, but was honest with himself about his chances in the General.  If he thinks this gun-toting, home-schooling radically anti-abortion VP is going to attract Clintonistas, he's got even worse judgment than even I gave him credit for. He'll woo the  Crazoid Christian Right (which are neither), but not the PUMAs.  I can't WAIT to see those Vice Presidential debates!!
Can anyone explain to me why anyone would accept a job that they themselves admit have no idea what that job entails?

Would Palin have accepted this job if McCain had been honest and told her that she was going to be the Whitehouse PLO - Permanent Latrine Orderly.

There is some obvious partisanship and spin and pychosis being expressed by the McCain supporters when they try and defend Palin as a good and reasonable choice by McCain when the woman does not even know what the job entails (and accepts it).
Palin wants to know what a VP does... (this is cool)

Don't back off from the fight, Obama.  Burton was right on in his message.  She doesn't have less experience, she has none!  Being mayor of a city of 8000 people?  The entire state only has 700,000!  She even said she doesn't know what the vice president does.  This is too important to back down.

Biden will make mincemeat of her in their debate.  Joe, don't back off because she's a woman, because she will know so much less than you do.  She knows nothing about foreign policy.  Make certain that the country really knows about her.  YOur debate may be the most critical of all!

This is not a woman for women.  This is a woman who is willing to let the government say what we do with our bodies.  Will she stand and fight for us to have equal pay for equal work?  Will she fight for our health care?  She is NOT Hillary!

Her degree is in journalism!!  What exactly does she understand about the law?  And this is the person who could potentially be nominating Supreme Court justices?  She was a sports broadcaster for a time.  Let her nominate MVPs, but not our Justices!!

Is this the best the Republicans could do?

No offense, Sarah, but this is way, way over your head.
I heard she bakes an amazing apple pie!  McCain is grasping at straws.  Its a repeat of Dole compeating against Clinton.  Sad...  Has anyone seen Harriet Meyers????
Very interesting strategy.  McCain has chosen a woman to satisfy that segment of the population that wanted Hilary, however, Mrs. Palin could, just as Obama was,  be considered "an empty suit" given her lack of experience.  At least we know that Biden has decades of experience behind him in the event, God forbid, that he had to step up and take over the Presidentcy.  Those conservative Republicans must be fit to be tied.  What must they think of Mrs. Palin??
Isn't she being investigated for trying to get her brother-in-law fired? Do they know what vetting means?

By the way, Nick A- you could be on to something. In a case like that there should be no do-overs! You know what I mean
You've just got to be kidding me!!!!!

Although I do agree with many of Sarah Paulin reported positions on the issues-

WAS SHE REALLY THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB ? Even in the top 20? (If she were a man she would have been selected)?

Granted the same could be said about Obama, but Millions of people voted for him to be the Democratic Nominee. McCain could have picked ANYONE. A 1/2 term Governor and Mayor of a tiny town in Alaska????

Like his Politics or not, most would say at least Joe Biden would appear to be as close to qualified as anyone could be. Obama not so much.

Clearly this was a massive pander or should I say a massive Panderlin (c) & hypocrisy at it's finest. I am completely disgusted!!!

Can my fellow Republicans really say without a smirk that this is the best person to step in- if need be? Does this person have ANY foreign Policy experience at all? Cause I see none! I'd probably vote for Paulin for City Mayor and maybe Governor but VP in waiting with a 72 yo President - NO WAY!!!!!!!

Since 1980 and the Great Ronald Reagan I have cast my vote for a Republican Candidate-

BUT I WILL NOT CAST MY VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE THAT CLEARLY PUTS POLITICS AHEAD OF THE COUNTRY'S NATIONAL INTEREST (and even has the nerve to accuse the other guy of the same thing).

I WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS TICKET. I don't know that I can support Obama and Biden either, but I will not support the ticket of McCain/Panderlin (c)- NO WAY, NO HOW!!!!!

And being completely honest McCain has been an embarrassment to himself and the GOP
President BO sounds good to me, rethugnutz vp pick does not matter, mccant has lost the election and is too confused to know it.
He he, love to see everyone all riled up, finishes my work day with a chuckle...thanks all! LOL
