McCain met Palin once before yesterday?

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008 5:17 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
The McCain camp has just released a tick-tock of how the Palin pick came to be. And according to it, McCain had met her just one time prior to yesterday.

The tick-tock from McCain communications director Jill Hazelbaker:
"John McCain first met Governor Sarah Palin at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington in February of 2008 and came away extraordinarily impressed. John McCain followed her career and admired her tenacity and her many accomplishments. She was scheduled for a high profile speaking role at our convention and included in the VP selection process because of his admiration for her strong reform credentials. Last Sunday, Governor Palin and John McCain had a conversation over the phone. Governor Palin was at the Alaska State Fair, and John McCain was at his home at Phoenix. Previously, Rick Davis, John McCain’s campaign manager, had also been in regular contact with the Governor as part of the on-going selection process. This past week, Governor Palin arrived with Kris Perry in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Wednesday evening. Upon arrival, Governor Palin and her longtime aide Kris Perry met with Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter of the McCain campaign at Mr. Bob Delgado’s home in Flagstaff. Mr. Delgado is the CEO of the Hensley corporation, which is Mrs. Cindy McCain’s family business. On Thursday morning, Governor Palin and staff were joined by Mrs. Cindy McCain and later joined by John McCain at the McCain family home in Sedona, Arizona. At approximately 11:00 a.m. Thursday August 28, 2008, John McCain formally invited Governor Sarah Palin to join the Republican ticket as the vice presidential nominee on the deck of the McCain family home."

"Later that morning, John McCain departed for Phoenix and Governor Palin departed with staff to Flagstaff, Arizona.  Governor Palin, Kris Perry, Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter proceeded to the Manchester Inn and Conference Center in Middleton, Ohio. They were checked into the hotel as the Upton Family. While there, Governor Palin’s children, who had been told they were going to Ohio to celebrate their parents’ wedding anniversary, were told for the first time that their mother would be a nominee for Vice President of the United States of America."

"Today, John McCain was proud to announce that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, a proven-reformer, will share a partnership with him to shake things up in Washington and to make government more effective for American families."

You've just got to be kidding me!!!!!

Although I do agree with many of Sarah Palin reported positions on the issues-

WAS SHE REALLY THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB ?
Even in the top 20? (If she were a man she would have been selected)?

Granted the same could be said about Obama, but Millions of people voted for him to be the Democratic Nominee. McCain could have picked ANYONE. A 1/2 term Governor and Mayor of a tiny town in Alaska????

Like his Politics or not, most would say at least Joe Biden would appear to be as close to qualified as anyone could be. Obama not so much.

Clearly this was a massive pander or should I say a massive Panderlin (c) & hypocrisy at it's finest. I am completely disgusted!!!

Can my fellow Republicans really say without a smirk that this is the best person to step in- if need be? Does this person have ANY foreign Policy experience at all? Cause I see none! I'd probably vote for Paulin for City Mayor and maybe Governor but VP in waiting with a 72 yo President - NO WAY!!!!!!!

Since 1980 and the Great Ronald Reagan I have cast my vote for a Republican Candidate-

BUT I WILL NOT CAST MY VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE THAT CLEARLY PUTS POLITICS AHEAD OF THE COUNTRY'S NATIONAL INTEREST (and even has the nerve to accuse the other guy of the same thing).

I WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS TICKET. I don't know that I can support Obama and Biden either, but I will not support the ticket of McCain/Panderlin (c)- NO WAY, NO HOW!!!!!

To be completely honest McCain has been an embarrassment to himself and the GOP deserves better!
Good judgement from McCAin or is the Republican party so out of touch that they do not feel the pain of the Hillary supporters who liked her because of her brain and womanhood, not because she was a woman?
OMG! The residents are running the aslyum!  He only met her once...and what? Thought she was purdy?!?!?!?  What a bad bad choice.  I'm feeling sorry for McCain.  His team is NOT serving him well!
So, McCain had no idea who the hell this woman was and was forced to pick her over the person he really wanted to pick (Lieberman)?

Wow, what a maverick! Standing up to your own party!
Guess Joe Biden was wrong...there is someone else EVEN MORE unqualified for the role of President that Rudy Guliani!
So what happened to someone he was very comfortable with?  This is his good judgement?
This was the pick that he some how thought would get him elected.
I hope that the American people see this as pandering the same why they saw the gas tax holiday that was never going to happen as pandering.
You gotta ahdn it to McCain. His idea of changing the dynamics of two oil men in the White House is to have one oil man and one female oil person. Thus tying him closerto Bush as a slave to big oil. What will he think of next?
Terrible Pick.

WOW.....
I dont like McLame but I mean really John???

Someone who has NO EXPERIENCE. 0, none, nothing, nada, niet, zilch????

All women should be INSULTED with how McCain thinks you vote ONLY for your sisters.
WOW
Rove is running another campaign and calling the shots.  Almost feel sorry for McCain.

"Only now, at then end, do you understand."
-Emporer Palpitine
Desperation move, as I said before.  If Mclame really felt confident, he would've picked one of the losers he ran against in the Primaries. So now he's taken on a stranger to say to America, "See?  See?  I'm still a maverick!  I snagged me a WOMAN, ain't I the wily ol' radical?" Let's see how many Clinton supporters find this "any woman will do" thinking insulting, shall we?
Did they even vet her?  It certainly doesn't look like it.  What a horrible choice!  John McCain has no judgement at all.  And he's weak.  It's pretty obvious this was a Rove choice to energize the evangelical base.  Whatever happened to the Maverick of 2000 who went after the crazy preachers like Dobson and Falwell and Robertson?  Sucking up to their heirs, that's what.
He met her one time??? One time? He followed her career for 6 months..while running for president...not likely. Wow...that must have ben one heck of a first meeting!
Looks like he really took a lot of time to think about this selection.
The worm has turned. Funny really. Barack was all about change. Uh-huh. Barack said McCain was too old and part of the Washington fold, so what does he do? He picks another old guy that is part fo the Washington fold. Go figure. He wants change ... well John McCain just sent him 118 pounds of "change" in the name of Sarah Palin and shoved it right up his
---.
Like his preferred game of craps, McCain shoots from the hip, looking for a lucky number...

This is Republican pandering all the way. Pander to the right. Pander to the women. Pander to the NRA. Heck, he's even pandering to CREATIONISTS...

The biggest buzz out there is "she's HOT!" Heck, even Dobson said he's ready "to pull that lever..." with her on the team.

But what happened to "celebrity" (Miss Alaska runnerup, media sportscaster) or "no experience" or "foreign experience"? What happened to "reform"? She's under investigation for abuse of her power as Governor, as far as I can tell.

---------------------------
Hey, MSNBC... can you POST something I write please? I see double posts of some when I can't get mine posted... why?
Palin asked, "will someone please tell me what a vp does" not suprising as mccant doesn't know what a President does but President BO will show him and America and the world what a president does.
Oh Great.

This would not be a working team. This would be McCain assigning Palin some lowly administrative work. Do you really think he would take her advice on anything or allow her to make any major decisions, individually or as a team? Come on folks. See this for what it is and reject it.
Soooo... A gal McThuselah knows about as well as I know my mailman gets the pick? What an abyssmal lack of leadership!
considering the howls I read on the other posts, the Obama supporters are devastated by this choice.  "She should stay home with her children"-"she was in a Beauty pageant"- and, my personal favorite "she has no experience".

I'm excited because, not only will McCain win this election, but the Kennedy wing of the party is about to lose.  That ridiculous stage at Invesco field should have done it, (have you seen the political cartoons?  Makes Dukakis' ride in a tank look like Teddy charging up San Juan hill!), but this bold choice will put this election away.

Finally we can wrest control of the party away from the left fringe loonies, and be a legitimate voice in this nation.

McCain Palin 08!
The Honorable Governor Palin has a hard road ahead,if Senator McCain succeeds at his ambition to become President of the USA.Alaska will lose a very competent governor ,as Alaska tries to rid itself of corrupt politicians.McCain no doubt has plans to remodel the "Cheney Bunker",to sequester away Gov. Palin, for four years, after using her for 68 days in the lime-light of the election.Governor Palin should get in writing the role Senator McCain has for her if elected in November. This role should notarized should she need to resign because of principal/ethical reasons, for which she has champion in Alaska.I would hope she will continue her support of union workers. And also support same-sex health benefits for federal workers,as she did for Alaska state workers. Her family has a huge adjustment coming their way,Alaska to Washington D.C.,is quite a change.
I don't wish harm to anyone. But what if something happens to Senator McCain health wise?

Pat Buchanan, fine, the Republican Party believes she is the future of their party. And they're excited about it. But for heaven sakes, does this make her VP material? He could appoint her to a cabinet position if Senator McCain has such a high opinion of her after meeting her just once.

When George Bush selected Dan Quayle, it was a different America.

Senator McCain is 72 years old.
?!? are these people serious! I am Canadian and if americans can't recognize the what they have in barack obama and decide to vote mccain and palin into office, the international community will just write the USA off once again. I give up. Americans vote George w in for a second term and now this. Your republican vice presidential candidate was a mayor of a back water town of 8,000? What a joke. And you expect to compete on a global level. ha. Paris Hilton would have been a better choice. But then again she would never run with  " that white haired dude"
You've just got to be kidding me!!!!!

Frankly McCain has been an embarrassment to himself and the GOP and this decision seriously jepordizes what little credibility he had remaining.

What does this say about his judgement???

Yikes I still can't believe it!

Can you truly make a decision on a VP selection after an one hour meeting? This is a fake move. She will drop out after a couple weeks and she will be replaced by someone else.. The McCain campaign is trying to create news stories to stop all the news stories about the DNC and the incredible acceptance speech. If not, he should have announced this pick before the democrats united. BAD STRATEGY and BAD JUDGEMENT MCCAIN.
If I were a woman, I would be offended. Don't pick a potiential VP to take over the oldest canidate EVER, just because she's a woman. It would be like him just picking an African-American, just to beat Obama. McCain only met this woman once, before he picked her as his VP. Now he trusts her to help run this country? I don't think so! He just wants to win. There are plenty of women more qualified he could have picked from. God forbid, but if something happend to McCain within the firsts months of his presidency,
she lied to her own children?
Palin will be making more news ala Eagleton when she resigns from the ticket in three weeks.  She has not been vetted and has never faced the meat grinder of the national press.  Bye, bye Sarah.
Her proven record of reform seems only to involve saying "no" to the bridge to nowhere.  Am I qualified?
You've got to be kidding. A heartbeat away from the Presidency? Someone with the judgment and experience to be ready from Day 1? And he's met her just once prior to selecting her. This confirms this pick was exactly what it appeared to be at the outset: bald political opportunism, a gimmick, a hail Mary pass. Perhaps it's indicative of the box McCain found himself, trying to triangulate the Christian right wing, the fiscal conservatives, and the neocons within his party. Or maybe it was just a case of extraordinarily poor judgment on McCain's part. Let's see. In their first Presidential test, Obama picked Biden and McCain picked Palin. 1-0 Obama.
This pick is not what McCain has been shouting as being 'ready'... http://enewsreference.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/biography-of-governor-sarah-palin-enewsreferencecom/
McCain the Maverick tries to play the gender card. Doesn't he understand that "Hillary supporters" are "Hillary" supporters, not "Any Woman" supporters? They are too bright to fall for this trick.
The hand of Karl Rove

This Republican VP pick is staight out of the Karl Rove play book. I can see it already. She's going to be used to go into the bible belt
and once again try to divide this country on issues like gay rights and abortion, and sadly, it could work. I find it incomprehensible
and terrifying that the citizens of this country may potentially be distracted ONCE AGAIN from the most important issues that we
face as a country; health care, the economy, national security and foreign policy, education, and social security---that they will once again divide on issues that have NOTHING TO DO with our strength and solvency as a Nation. It's irresponsible and dangerous.

I also find it astonishing that should McCain win this election, and fall ill and die while in office, that we would be faced with a 40
something year old woman with absolutely no national political experience, and no experience in foreign policy. I could go on and on.

I hope that people are aware enough to see through this Rovian slight of hand, and continue to look at the bigger picture that we face as a country.
The average age of a healthy male...not one who has battled cancer, according to the AMA is 75.2 years.  Let's see...72 + 4 = 76.  hmmmm.. Hope Sarah is ready on day one. Repubs must think that women are just humans with boobs who dance backwards.  Hillary was about women's rights and so many other issues.  This is insulting.
Obama/ Biden 08
This pick is absolutely rediculous...This was done to pick up "Hilary Voters". NO WAY!!! We wanted Hilary based on her credentials it was so wonderful to see that a woman could stand up on the world stage and say I can do everything you can...what can Palin say "Look, I'm a girl".
Why not Kay Bailey Hutchinson if he was going to pander for the famale vote? I could have gotten behine her....he really is clueless.

you gotta be kidding!!LM*o!! A Republican would Never pick a woman as a vice presidental running mate!Talk about trendy. His advisors picked a good one. Or so they think.I think its going to come back and bite the republicans in the butt.It is just WAY too funny. It will pick up a few women voters, but I dont think it will be enough. Lets hope not.Again, This is just too funny and typical republicans at there best {worst}.Dont you just love polititions!?!? What a joke. Its a popularity contest. It reminds me of high school and voting for student body president. This campaign will hit new alltime lows. just wait and see.toooooo funny
So - basically, when McCain found out Obama did not pick Hillary...he decided to insult every woman in this country by picking Palin assuming that those who supported the seasoned, brilliant and accomplished Hillary would cast our vote for Palin simply b/c she has overies...

wow! What an insult!
This sounds like a Bush decision.  Bush looked into the eyes of the Russian leader and liked his soul so could trust him.  (see what that got us)
McCain looks at a beauty queen and decides she is ready to be President.
Does she and her family know what it means to run in a National campaign.  Do they even know all the states in America?
You're right Sen. McCain you and your new VP are really gonna "shake things up in Washington"!By raising my taxes, cut the taxes for yourself and all of your friends i.e. corporations, oil companies, everybody making over $250,000, make certain that those who can't afford health insurance stay in that position( they can continue that wonderful plan they have at the local ER) tax me because my employer pays for part of my health benefits, and bring back the draft so that in my old age I can witness my two grandsons go off to a war that YOU started.
McCain hasnt been a maverick since 2002 when he started laying the groundwork for his presidential campaign.  Repub leadership seems to eager to sell their morals for politics.
It is absolutely ridiculous that you all are bashing the McCain camp for picking her.  Exactly what credentials does she lack that Obama has? She has been a mayor and a governor...and a governor of a state that holds 20% of our national energy resources.  True she holds no Washington experience, but your suggesting we elect a man who has only been in DC for three years...he essentially started running for President shortly after becoming a Senator for the first time.  If you find her lacking, your should be finding Obama lacking with one big exception...from day one Obama will be the man making the big decisions...if McCain wins you have a man with a lifetime of experiences making the decisions.  Give her a chance and really learn what she is all about...After all, Biden was partially picked for his resume as well and that is political pandering too...diplomacy and catholic...that should help get some voters.
It doesn't suprise me at all that McCain would pick someone for such an important job after only having met her once.
Can't you tell that is how he operates on all levels?
He is quick to anger, quick to pull the trigger.
This is his personality.
As Obama put it so eloquently McCain does not have the "TEMPERMENT" to be commander in chief.
This pick has been the first example of how McCain will exercise his judgement. Or how will be easily influenced by the right wing of the party.  I am not sure if he even knows who he is or what he thinks anymore.
African-American mothers have worked forever and at the same time we were there to give our children breakfast, dinner, help with homework, and tuck them into bed.  How does a mother who has an infant and small children do this and campaign for vice-president? One of my best friends had a Down Syndrone son.  She was a full-time Spanish professor who didn't work for a yar in order to help her infant son with the patterning behavior that would help him achieve his potential.  What will Sara Palin be able to do for her infant son?
Amateur night. He met her once and this is how he decides on a VP. This also could be as bad for the Republications as George McGovern's pick of Tom Eagleton in 1972. Once the media and others began looking, the Democratic ticket sank like a stone.
I am an Arizona Independent that used to be Republican, a veteran Marine and apart of the middle class. Shame on you John McCain. Not only do you try to ride on your unfortunate time as a POW to get sympathy votes for your service, which is a disgrace, but you have now insulted the intelligence of the mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters of this nation. How dare you assume that they would be so, as you call it, "naive" to what you are doing. You didn't even choose a woman with credentials. You went and found what you consider a clean choice so that they wouldn't see what you are up to. Well fortunately for them (Women of this nation) we are in the information age. There are already hits on YOUTUBE showing that this young lady doesn't even know what the responsibilities are for the office of which you are trying to appoint her. I don't blame her. She is just trying to do the right thing. But you using the women of this nation as a pawn is disrespectful and you should be ashamed. You are going to "use her for you purpose" and spit her out. It is unfortunate. You are a perfect example of what we don't need for this country. You only put your interests first. Not America. Well this Marine won't be falling it. I have little girls and they are much smarter than you make women out to be. FOR SHAME!!!!!! You will see that they are cunning and will see right through your  BUSH-IT!!!
John McCain's and idiot or maybe I should say he thinks all women are idiots and interchangable.  I am a 43 year old single Mom living in the state of Florida and a Hillary supporter.  McCain's choice for VP was so transparent it's not even funny.  The stunt he pulled today to try to get my vote as a woman and a Clinton supporter is down right insulting.  How could he insult womens intelligence that way, thinking that any woman on any ticket no matter what there parties platform is would make the weak minded, bubble headed women in this country will run out and place there vote for her.  Well, it's not going to work, other then us both being mothers and women, we have absolutely NOTHING else in common and the sex of the VP candidate is not enough for me to throw my support.  The Democratic agenda does align with my beliefs and after Obama's speech last night, I realized the issues that I was looking to Hillary for Obama cares about them as well.  So, my vote is now going to Obama.
This was just boggling my mind, and it doesn't really make much sense to me, but i just had a thought.

What if McCain doesn't want the Republicans to have the white house? Maybe he has seen what the repubs have done over the last 8 years and his "Maverick" side told him that he needed to do something better.

There have been so many gaffe's and missteps along the way for McCain, including the false negativity, you have to wonder that he may be doing it on purpose.

I can just see a week before the election, McCain giving a speech on national TV stating that he's throwing the race because he thought that having a Dem in office (especially Obama) would be the best thing for the country. Then he says "I'm voting for Obama, and I hope you do too!!!"

What does he have to lose? Getting kicked out of the GOP? He'd surely go down as a true Maverick.

I'm no conspiracy theorist or really believe that this is actually true, but it makes you wonder....
Great! So I'm sure she was thoroughly vetted.

I can't wait to see this unravel.

So much for picking someone you feel comfortable with.

Palin/McCain - The cradle to the grave GOP ticket.

Maybe McAlzheimers really likes the color blue and would really like to see it in every state (except Alaska) on November 4th.

What an idiot!  I have spent years as a PTA president.  I guess I am qualified to run the country.
