First thoughts: Palin's pros and cons

*** The case for Palin: For McCain, the biggest thing Sarah Palin brings is buzz. It's something the campaign has been seeking for some time. In fact, it has bothered Team McCain that it doesn’t get the same "gee whiz" kind of coverage that Obama gets. Palin changes that discrepancy -- for now. She also helps McCain re-introduce himself as a change-reform candidate. Palin's whole shtick in Alaska is reformer; it's what got her into the governors mansion. Indeed, the Palin pick may signal that the McCain folks have concluded that "experience" as a message isn't a winning one, even though they spent the entire summer developing that argument. So they are hoping Palin helps redefine GOP ticket as change. What's more, she brings a historical first to the McCain campaign. And finally, there's Palin's gender, which the McCain folks hope reopens some of the Clinton-Obama wounds that the Dem convention seemed to heal.

*** The case against Palin. The biggest negative about the pick is that on its face, it looks like a political gimmick, a political calculation. And McCain's supposed to be anything but a calculating or gimmicky pol. Indeed, as the Los Angeles Times wonders, isn’t McCain supposed to be the guy putting “country first” and not playing politics? The fact that McCain doesn't know Palin and spent all but a couple of hours getting to know her before making his pick is going to invite A LOT of judgment criticism. The perception is going to be that McCain panicked and wanted to do something radical to shake up the race. Well, he may have shaken up the race, but at the cost of undermining his best asset: that he was ready to lead. This decision doesn't look like it was well thought out, even as Palin has made a tremendous first impression.

*** The vetting question. Just how well was she vetted? There's going to be a race to define Palin, and while the McCain has bought time by shocking the world with the pick, there's going to be a lot of interest by the press to dig around in Alaska. And this “Troopergate” story is perhaps just the beginning. What's more, since she isn't well know, any little thing could get blown up pretty quickly.

*** The age factor: Did anyone notice that there were more mentions of McCain's age yesterday than we've seen in months? Sure, yesterday was his birthday, and the VP pick was always going to serve as a reminder that McCain was seeking to become the oldest first-term president in history. But McCain's age has been an under-the-radar negative for him for some time (just check out any recent poll on the topic). Palin -- being an absolute unknown -- is going to get put through the "is she ready to be commander in chief?" test a little bit more than your average VP pick, simply because of McCain's age. And the more focus there is on McCain's age, the more political danger the campaign faces.

*** The bottom line: Palin has made a good first impression. She appears to be very engaging and has a great story to tell. But her pick signals that the McCain camp wasn't happy where things stood with this race, despite their public posture and their standing in the polls. And they felt the need to throw the long ball. The good news for McCain: Palin will have low bars for every moment she's on center stage (her speech yesterday, her convention speech on Wednesday, and her debate with Biden). But wow -- is this a gamble! Then again, McCain loves to gamble, he's actually someone very fond of dice games, and there's no doubt he's rolling the dice with Palin. A word of warning to Dems, courtesy of Peter Hart: Don't get overly gleeful about all the downsides of this pick. If anything, realize McCain may be falling in a 20-year pattern of shocking picks that end up not backfiring, like Spiro Agnew in '68 or Quayle in '88. Palin may actually be the GOP's destiny. Go figure.

*** Obama’s response ad: The Obama camp is up with a TV ad arguing that while Palin might be McCain’s VP pick, McCain’s real running mate is President Bush. The ad goes: “Well, he's made his choice. But, for the rest of us … there's still no change. McCain doesn't get it, calling this broken economy ‘strong.’ Wants to keep spending ten-billion-a-month in Iraq. And votes with George Bush 90% of the time. So, while this may be his running-mate … America knows this is John McCain's agenda. And we can't afford four more years of the same.”

*** On the trail: McCain and Palin head to a rally in Washington, PA. Meanwhile, in Ohio, Obama and Biden attend a memorial service for Stephanie Tubbs Jones in Cleveland and later do a rally in Dublin.

I cannot believe that a woman would even think about being on the ticket with someone who has repeatedly shown his contempt for women.
Also, remember it is Mr. McCain who will be president not Ms. Palin.  That thought gives me nightmares!!
Palin has been governor for a year and has basically done nothing. Governor of Alaska is a part time job, it’s pretty boring and quiet up there . . . Palin is not a conservative (fiscally, at least) and that Sarah is not ethical (remember - she’s the only sitting governor under investigation for abuse of power in the Republic); Palin, with her track record of calling people she doesn’t like, “haters,” and “dumbass,” and giggling like a school girl when, on a radio show, the DJ’s called a cancer-surviving grandmother she doesn’t like a “bitch” and a “cancer,” and no, Palin  hasn’t run the “open, honest and transparent” government she touts. In fact there are over 1,000 emails she doesn’t want to release (sources say it’s because they’ll paint the clear picture of how petty and vindictive she is). The status of the emails is most heading to court. So, no. Sarah Palin isn’t the paragon of virtue she’s being touted as. She’s not the reformist. She’s not ethical and honest and open and transparent.
Well, McCain couldn't have picked a better choice. She is fresh and new, not old Washington, and she doesn't claim to be anything she is not. She has more experience than Obama in making executive decisions and he wants to be President, she is not running for Presedent people? So, if McCain God forbid should die, guess what, Palin would have about the same foreign policy ecperience as Obama! WOW what a comparison. At least she is not trying to convince us to make her our comander and cheif now is she?

FYI- Obama is 50% Caucasian, 43.75% Arabic and only 12.5% Afro-American. His beloved Grandmother is still getting up at 5:00 AM doing her daily SALAT!

He is a MUSLIM you fools! For 31 yrs. until his wife made him change his religion to run for office!

WAKE UP! HIS NAME IS ARABIC! He is not BLACK!

His biggest supporter is one of the richest women in the country OPRAH!  Whoo Hoo, like she's not prejudiced. She is too worried about spending all her money on "Her African Girls" than to be worried about her own country where we have starving people on the streets!

Wake up and vote smart!

RC in FL.
The media is desperate now, they have seen Obamas thunder taken away. MSNBC is in Chaos, and Obamas Diss of Palin just got thrown back in his face.. See you guys at McCains inauguration
Dan Quale in a dress

McCain needs a brain transplant, what lousy judgement.  With his help putting someone with so litte experience a heartbeat away.  Nuts simply nuts.
Hello - Palin wants to teach creationism to your children.  She wants to push religion down your children's throats; brain wash them.  That is not the choice of the state/government.  Please wake up, don't put people like this in the White House
doesn't believe in global warming, wants to drill in ANWR, 110% pro-life, 100% pro-gun, supported Buchanan in 2000 - enough said
Am I the only one who thinks these supposed ex-Clinton supporters aren't what they claim to be?  If I was a betting man, I would put a whole lot of money on about 90% of the "didn't get Clinton, so I'm going with McCain" voters being solid Republican voters all along.  Who in their right mind would vote in their own worst interests out of what amounts to spite?  Why did Clinton almost win the nomination?  Because she's damn good at what she does!  Why did Palin get the VP spot?  Because she is a woman.  That's not feminism at work.  It's a gimmick and a slap in the face to all of the women of the world who have had to climb to the top.
Ok, John, really funny sick joke.  Now tell us who it really is?  Boris, Natasha, Rocky, Bullwinkle?  Funny guy you are John.  You must of cracked them up on the carrier.

What? Me Worry!
Senator McCain is lucky he does not get the intense coverage that Senator Obama does.  If he did, his Campaign would be in deep trouble.

Senator McCain has said that social security is a disgrace and wants to privatize it and gamble with all of our futures.  Senator McCain wants each of our 50 states to set their own fuel efficiency standards; apparently, he fails to realize this is a nightmare for automobile manufacturing and would lead to higher priced cars.

Senator McCain wants to tax our employer provided insurance benefit as a tax and gives us a meager tax "credit" in return-- tax "credit" is not $$$ in our pockets; a tax "credit" simply lowers our income tax rate slightly and maybe saves us $300-$500 in taxes which is not even remotely equal to the value of good employer provided insurance.

Senator McCain mistakenly believes that Iraq borders Afghanistan and has difficulty differentiating between Sunni and Shi'a.

Senator McCain said on national television that EVERYTHING-- including payroll tax increases -- would be on the table for social security reform.  But, the very next day, his Campaign told us all that the candidate (Senator McCain) does not speak for his own Campaign and there will be no new taxes.  So, actually deciphering WHAT Senator McCain will do is very difficult since I cannot trust what I hear out of his own mouth.

No, Senator McCain should be careful for what he wishes.  Should the press start intensely covering his Campaign like they now do Senator Obama's, he would find himself in trouble.
So desperate to avoid picking Romney, and knowing that he can't pick a pro choicer, and worrying that Pawlenty looked too safe a choice, McCain has taken a massive gamble. Almost like picking a name out of the hat, picked after 2 conversations, how can McCain seriously sell this as the best choice he could have made?

But I think she will be yesterdays story by the end of the week. I think McCain is gambling that independent women will vote for a woman, simply because she is a woman. I think women are more intelligent than that, and once the Obama campaign hits McCain as 'more of the same' on the issues, the symbolism of this will fail. I think as a choice, this will have excited plenty of GOPers, and a few days before the convention, thats no bad thing, but the excitement will be beginnning to fade and Gustav will be in the headlines by Monday.

I wonder what that guy who made the video praying for rain in Denver is thinking right about now?
Why should the bar be set so low for her?  She is in a position to ascend to the highest office in the land, she should be able to speak intelligently on matters both foreign and domestic, and be able to tell us how she will deal with sitting across the table from Russia and Iran.
On another note, I watch Chris Matthews last nite and he had one of those uneducated PUMA's on, what a fool she was, she actually said Palin was a moderate!  Can you believe that Sara Palin "A MODERATE".  These are the type of Hillary people that will vote for McCain, thankfully there are not many of them.
Palin has been governor for a year and has basically done nothing. Governor of Alaska is a part time job, it’s pretty boring and quiet up there . . . This pick sholud be insulting to all Democratic women of this country. I wouldn't vote for her just because she has the same  body parts I have. This woman is extreme right in her views. Even Limbaugh loves her. This was a political move by McCain and it should backfire. This VP pick is anti-abortion,anti-gay, anti-conservation,anti stem cell research and pro guns. She doesn't even believe in that global warming is real and man made and she does not believe in evolution. SHe is too far right to be VP.
I wonder how the stay at home "soccer moms" will feel about Ms. Palin's willingness to leave her four month old baby to hit the campaign trail at a time when he needs her most?  I am the mother of a nine year old with autism and I set aside my career ambitions to give my child the time and attention he needed to help overcome the formidable obstacles he faces.  I have been both a stay at home mom and a working mom and I have nothing against working mothers but I wonder if Ms. Palin is in a bit of denial about what it really takes to raise a child with disabilities and how that squares with campaigning and the duties of a VP.
Just curious, how will she have time to campaign if Cheney has to train her on how to manage the chasms of executive power he has created?

Personally, I feel more threatened by Diebold in this election!
Palin cut funding for Museums so that their was money for a hockey rink.  Now I understand why she is a "hockey Mom".  However, us in the other part of America believe that Museums and other cultural institutions including parks are vital to education.
