More reaction to the Palin pick

Posted: Sunday, August 31, 2008 11:21 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Per a new USA Today/Gallup poll, 51% say they have never heard of Sarah Palin, while 22% have a favorable impression of her and 7% have a negative one. “There is also wide uncertainty about whether she's qualified to be president. In the poll, taken Friday, 39% say she is ready to serve as president if needed, 33% say she isn't, and 29% have no opinion. That's the lowest vote of confidence in a running mate since the elder George Bush chose then-Indiana senator Dan Quayle to join his ticket in 1988. In comparison, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden was seen as qualified by 57%-18% after Democrat Barack Obama chose him as a running mate last week.”

That said, the Palin pick has “electrified conservative activists,” the Politico’s Martin writes. “By tapping the anti-abortion and pro-gun Alaska governor just ahead of his convention, which is set to start here Monday, McCain hasn’t just won approval from a skeptical Republican base -- he’s ignited a wave of elation and emotion that has led some grassroots activists to weep with joy.”

Maureen Dowd writes, “The legacy of Geraldine Ferraro was supposed to be that no one would ever go on a blind date with history again. But that crazy maverick and gambler McCain does it, and conservatives and evangelicals rally around him in admiration of his refreshingly cynical choice of Sarah, an evangelical Protestant and anti-abortion crusader who became a hero when she decided to have her baby, who has Down syndrome, and when she urged schools to debate creationism as well as that stuffy old evolution thing.”

The New York Times notes that McCain’s choice of Palin has forced both campaigns to recalibrate their messages and electoral strategies. “Mr. Obama’s campaign does not plan to go directly after Ms. Palin in the days ahead. Instead, it is planning to increase its attacks on Mr. McCain for his opposition to pay equity legislation and abortion rights - two issues of paramount concern to many women - as it tries to head off his effort to use Ms. Palin to draw Democratic and independent women who had supported Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.”

“Mr. McCain’s advisers said that rallying wavering women would be one of Ms. Palin’s main jobs in the weeks ahead. They said her campaign schedule would take her to areas in swing states like Ohio and Pennsylvania where there were pockets of women who had supported Mrs. Clinton in the primaries.”

But they might want to rethink Palin trumpeting Clinton’s achievements before GOP voters - because mentioning Clinton’s name drew a chorus of boos. Palin, NBC/NJ’s Matthew E. Berger reports, acknowledged yesterday the role Clinton’s and Geraldine Ferarro’s candidacies had played for other women, including herself. But when Palin said that Clinton “showed determination and grace in her own campaign,” there were an audible boos smattered amid the cheers. Palin ignored the boos and continued on with her speech.

The Washington Post puts the “Troopergate” scandal in the context of a family feud between the Palins and an ex-brother-in-law. Yet the facts remain the same as the paper’s reporting from the previous day. “In January 2007, Palin's husband, Todd … invited Monegan to the governor's office. Todd Palin asked Monegan to look into the Wooten matter. Monegan did and later told Todd there was nothing he could do because the matter was closed.”

“Monegan told The Washington Post that Palin called him a few days later on his cellphone, and that he told her the same thing. She brought it up again in February 2007 in the state capitol building and Monegan warned her to stay at arm's length. Monegan said Palin mostly backed off, but kept raising the matter indirectly through e-mails. In the fall of 2007, Monegan said he alerted her to a bad jury verdict against a trooper in rural Alaska, and she replied by mentioning Wooten, but not by name… In July, Palin's chief of staff told Monegan he was being fired because the governor wanted to ‘go in a different direction,’ Monegan said.”

At yesterday’s Obama-Biden press conference, when asked what it said about McCain’s judgment that he chose someone with little national security or foreign policy experience, Obama simply said she was a “compelling person” with a “great person” and “engaging personality.”

“I think that ultimately, she subscribes to the same economic theories and foreign policy theories as John McCain does,” he added.

Asked to respond to the McCain camp’s statement that Palin has more executive experience than he and Biden, Obama simply defended his own choice. “I think you guys can take a look at Gov. Palin’s record [and] Joe Biden’s record and make your own judgments in terms of who you think has what it takes to be an outstanding vice president,” he said. “I feel confident about my choice. I’ll let John McCain talk about his.”

A campaign surrogate had some stronger words about the Republican ticket earlier in the day, saying the Palin selection showed a failure of judgment on McCain’s part. “Palin was mayor of a town half the size of Bexley,” Sen. Sherrod Brown told a large, boisterous Buckeye State crowd. “Nothing against Bexley, but I don’t know that the mayor of Bexley’s really quite ready to be in the White House.”

The New York Daily News tracks down Palin's mother in law who is considering voting for Obama. "Sarah Palin's hometown rallied around her as mayor -- now Republicans wonder if the rest of America will warm up to the surprise pick from cold country. Though her mother-in-law has doubts. Faye Palin admitted she enjoys hearing Barack Obama speak, and still hasn't decided which way she'll vote… 'I'm not sure what she brings to the ticket other than she's a woman and a conservative. Well, she's a better speaker than McCain," Faye Palin said with a laugh. "People will say she hasn't been on the national scene long enough. But I believe she's a quick study."

More: "Scores of reporters descended Saturday on the A-frame wood hunting lodge where Sarah Palin's parents live amid hundreds of sets of trophy antlers and a taxidermy collection that includes a giant moose head and a full-grown mountain lion."

Palin says that she is a "Pro Life Feminist." I know that her position on abortion makes her Pro Life, but what makes her a Feminist?
Palin is the perfect representative of the Republican party: wrong on everything and under investigation for misuse of governmental power.  Congratulations on the "good judgment," John.
Mccain has made an irresponsible, dangerous
decision on picking his vp, having total disregard
to the future of our country.
Well, he and the republicans have put the future
of our country on such shaky grounds with their
criminal decisions these last eight years, why
should or would they start caring now.
Obama just won the election
Hipocrites, that should be the republican slogan.  All they had against Obama- He has no experience to be president, he has so much more experience then Palin, yet the republican turn a blind eye to that.
Republcans, we don't know anything about him! (Obama)
Well I think Palin wins hands down on that one too!
I'm thinking of moving to Canada if McCain wins- I
can't live in a Country with so many stupid people!
I believe that women are diffidently qualified to be President of the United States.  My anger with Clinton is that she brought gender politics into the arena.  She did not lose because she was a woman; she lost because the country did not want another Clinton in the White House.  It is funny to watch the Right wring their hands about how badly Clinton was treated.  Does anyone remember what they did to the Clintons?   The selection of Palin is simply a ploy by the McCain to try and draw the Clinton supporters to his side.  Some may go, but most will not.  Women are not stupid even if McCain thinks they are.  Palin may energize the base of the Republican Party, but it has been that same base that voted in George Bush on two occasions.  Are the female voters in the United States prepared to do that again?  Finally, women can go toe to toe with any man.  Governor Palin should be vetted with the same energy that any male VP candidate would have to go through.  We are not a bunch of flowers that need to be protected.  If she is up to the job, she will handle the debate and the campaign with ease and confidence.  If she wilts, it is not because she a woman, but rather the wrong woman.
Mccain has made an irresponsible, dangerous
decision for the future of our country.
In hopes of getting more votes. he has
picked a person for vp that is totally
lacking in qualifications and in no way
could ever step into the position of
president if needed.
Country first?
ENOUGH!!
I'm glad McCain chose a woman to be his vp, because I certainly thought he was anti-women, voting against equal pay for equal work, cheating on his first wife and marrying someone 20 years younger than him, etc.
There is no question that she is not ready to be VP.  This was an insance choice by John McCain that tells us that he has poor judgement.  He has neither the temperament nor the sound judgement to be president. He is the oldest man ever to run for president and this woman is not ready to lead our nation.
To any rabid supporter of Hillary Clinton who is still planning to vote for McCain you need to take a long hard look at Ms Palin.

In addition, to being a pro-lifer and a card carrying member of the NRA,  she was also a strong supporter of Pat Buchanan in his campaign in 2000.

To those of us in So. Florida this a painful reminder of how things might have been, when many voted for Buchanan instead of Gore because of poor ballot design and the voters not paying attention.  Many of those voters were elderly Jews, who were aghast when they realized too late, they voted for such a bigot as Buchanan.
So what does that say about Sarah Palin?  Is she righter than right in her views?   We need to know an awful lot more about her as she will be only a heartbeat away in a somewhat fragile scenario.
Female moose hunter-exotic
from Alaska-exotic though cold at times
Beauty runner up-not beautiful enough
stacked hairdo-retro
creationist-confusing faith with science
left a deficit in local government-not a good economist
troopergate-using political power for personal reasons.
Boy, she sounds more like Bush than McCain does.
does she have a compelling life story?
We all do, we all strive to do better, we love our families, we love our country.
Her story is no more compelling than yours or mine.

Interesting story on Sarah Palin that the press hasn't dug into yet.  Apparently Sarah Palin claimed to be pregnant but showed zero signs of it, even after giving a speech and taking an 8-hour flight after she claimed that her water broke.  During this time, her 16-year-old daughter was taken out of school for 8 months due to "mono," which, if you've ever had it, takes a couple months max to get over.

Some fishy stuff, read for yourself and make up your own mind.
Many say this choice proves McCain is a maverick. Why? He wanted Leiberman or Ridge.  A maverick would have chosen the VP he wanted.  By caving to the religious right, he proved he is not a maverick.
The Palin pick (oh, I do hope Nedra Pickler writes about Palin sometime soon) shows two things clearly:

1) for wingnut base conservatives, ideology trumps all. Palin couldn't find South Ossetia on a map, much less explain what's going on there and offer possible plans to deal with the situation? Who cares! She doesn't believe in Evolution, so she's the one for us!!

2) McMoneybags will literally say or do ANYTHING if it will get him elected to the office he's coveted for so long. Sarah Palin has NO experience that qualifies her for VP (other than, to paraphrase Bill Clinton, she was born in the US and she's over 35). None. If she's "qualified" for the office, then Pawlenty has the resume of a Henry Kissinger. When you're still including PTA president on your resume, you're not ready to be a "heartbeat away from the presidency" of anything other than the Rotary Club.

Who picks someone for arguably the 2nd most important job in the known universe after two - or is it just one - meetings? Who picks the least experienced and least qualified from what can only be described as a rather sad field of candidates? I'm sure being a woman (a rather young and attractive one, at least by the standards of politics), anti-reproductive choice, anti-science and pro-oil drilling had nothing to do with it.

Is this what ALL Republican'ts do now? Hire the absolute worst candidates for a critically important job simply because they belong to the same social club as you? Worked out great during the Iraq reconstruction, didn't it?
While trying to avoid answering the question about Sarah Palin's lack of experience Fred Thompson just informed all of us that you don't get foreign policy experience by being on the floor of the Senate.
What does this say about McCain?
He touted her 1.5 years as Gov. of Alaska as giving her some sort of executive resume' that would make her ready to President at a moments notice.
We have had 8 years of an administration run by a former Gov. and it has been a disaster.
So again, what experience does Palin have that makes her ready to take over is she needs to?
Remember this, if McCain has to undergo any medical procedures that require him to be out of commission for a week or a month she will be in charge.
He doesn't have to die for her to have to have to take over.
This is a serious consideration when the person at the top of the ticket is 72 with a history of more than one malignant melanomas.
I don't know about the rest of you but to me McCain's VP pick is not one that makes me feel even remotely comfortable.
Basically, none of our candidates presidential and VPs have the experience of being a president or VP. However, being the president and VP means you must be able to lead this great country. Although, Palin has a great rating in Alaska, many of us just don't know or trust that she can lead in the event of a crisis with the president. She is really an unknown, she is a republican, but she will have to serve all the people of this country. The fact that McCain is the oldest presidential candidate with a history of health issues, really, whether we want to talk about it or not are concern. This was not a maverick choice, this was a giving in to pressure and desperation on McCain. McCain choice for VP consistently shows his no-maverick approach to leadership, McCain leadership now is at question again. For the republicans we have the oldest presidential candidate and a unknown governor from a small state of Alaska. On the other hand, for the demos you have a presidential candidate who has demostrated his leadership ability throughout this 2 year compaign, a US senator to Congress, a state senator for over 8 years, a constitution and civil law expert, a law professor raised with a humble story. A candidate who has successful managed a campaign that has change the economic matrixes of campaigning. Biden, raised with a middle class humble story with a wealth of experience in the Congress and a law professor, demonstrated experience in foreign relations for decades. These are our choices.

Our country is hungry for skilled leadership, smart dipolmacy and a sincere concern about the right direction of our economy. Those are the most important issues facing us NOW! Whether Ms. Palin is a hockey mom with five children is no concern to folks who have lost their homes or do not have
health coverage and dealing with immediates issues on how to send their children to college.

Sarah Palin's mother-in-law is a wise woman.
John McCain's been watching too many reruns of "Northern Exposure." His choice in Sarah Palin is both reckless, foolish and completely irresponsible. The scary part is that enough people may actually vote for them in November, thus endangering the country with a vice president completely unqualified to be commander-in-chief. Makes Obama's pick of Joe Biden look downright presidential.
I'm a Republican, but picking Palin is really making me doubt McCain's judgement.
gov. palin is a breath of fresh air.  she is well aware of the significant energy problems facing this country and, as explained by maria bartaromo (meet the press 8/31/08), capable of handling it. what some may criticize a lack of experience in foreign relations she is unique in familiarity w/the energy area and no doubt would learn very quickly about international problems.
i hope you will have have gov. palin and maria bartaromo on future meet the press and other programs often.  bartaromo's comments and analysis  of gov palin were inciteful, interesting, and illuminating.  she, like palin, is a ten to be sure.
For all the people who say Sarah Palin is more experienced than Obama, I want you to back that up.  Tell us all about her record and experience in the national and international arena and on foreign policy which a Vice President should be quite familiar in.

- Obama has chaired the Foreign Relations  Subcommittee in the US Senate for three years,
- authored national legislation with Senator Lugar on securing loose nukes on a world scale,
- was correct on against voting against the Iraq war to begin with (no WMD),
- was correct on conducting diplomacy which Bush is now doing,
- was correct on going after al Qaida in Pakistan territory which Bush has now done,
- was correct on saying it is time to start leaving Iraq which Bush has now agreed to,
- On top of US Senate experience, spent eight years in the Illinois Legislature passing numerous bipartisan bills

to name a few items on his record

Now tell us all about all Sarah Palin's foreign policy and international experience.

You really don't have to answer.  Why:

BECAUSE SHE HAS ZERO, AND THAT IS A FACT.

AND THAT SAYS MCAIN IS WILLING TO SELL OUT AND ENDANGER THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WITH THIS VP PICK JUST TO GET INTO OFFICE.

THATS INCOMPETENT!
Funny how McCain thinks that women who voted for Hillary will switch over because Palin is a woman.  That would mean that all their ideological beliefs would also have to change with their vote.   Right?  After hearing all the boos that Hillary's name brought out at the Palin's speech I hardly think that Hillary supporters are going to appreciate that.
I heard rumors that the baby is her daughter's.   Wow more scandal!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Stepford Wife" Palin will set back the feminist movement decades if not centuries.  I'm not surprised that so little can excite the braindead evangelical christian lunatic fringe activists.  She's no Hillary Clinton and I would love to see Hillary get to debate this false feminist on feminist issues.

We don't need a "Darth Vader" Cheney in a skirt as our VP.  We don't need more abuse of power from someone so clueless and so dishonest she doesn't even know what the VP does day to day or that says she was against the bridge to nowhere without being honest that she supported it with her protege Ted Stevens first.

Just what college did this mental midget go to and what were her grades?  I bet the airhead spent more time on sports and guns than academics.

The Dumb and Dumber ticket will appeal only to the Neanderthal types who supported the last 8 years of arrogance and ignorance that has nearly destroyed our secular democracy, our economy and our military.

Only Obama/Biden will bring intelligence and real science back to the White House!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
When I first heard of this nomination, I was slightly amused at the desperate tactics John McCain is using.  Then I thought about it.  Obviously, it is offensive that he would nominate an unheard-of-in-the-lower-48 woman as a ploy to woo Hillary's supporters.  Hillary's backers are not ignorant enough to vote for just ANY woman.  Palin is no Hillary Clinton.  In fact, she's the anti-Hillary... which may delight Republicans, but will deter Clinton supporters who are voting on the issues that Clinton has worked so hard for.

I believe the bigger issue is the practicality of this nomination in terms of Palin's ability to be a good V.P. and the mother of a special needs infant. Both callings require total involvement and a tremendous amount of time and attention.  I understand that some will feel this makes her a better advocate for people with special needs.  But speaking as a former mental health case manager for people with disabilities, I feel that she is exploiting this four-month-old by dragging it around the country, holding it up as the proof that she is absolutely pro-life.  My husband and I are "older" new parents, and we denied testing during pregnancy to check for abnormalities. It did not matter to us if our new baby would be born with a disability.  However, that does not mean that there are circumstances where abortion may be the best option for some, especially if that unwanted child will be seriously abused or neglected later in life.

Abortion has always been, and will continue to be, an unsettled debate.  The Republicans, with this nomination, have once again brought the topic to the forefront in an effort to distract the American people from what has been truly negatively affecting their daily lives for the past eight years.  The middle class is becoming the working poor.  We continue to spend billions on a war that Bush lied to us about and called us unpatriotic for questioning.  He has completely isolated us politically from the rest of the world.  And all the while, more people have to choose between buying medicine or food or gas.  Dreams like college and home ownership and retirement have been pushed further out of reach.

I will proudly be blue in a red state.   Obama makes me believe, for the first time in a long time, that things are not so bleak and that America can be restored.  If nothing else, his vision has inspired millions of Americans to also believe and, more importantly,  to get involved in their communities and make the change happen.  Call it disillusion or naivety, but Obama’s movement makes me want to do community service.   And there’s nothing bad about that.

Obama, Biden and his braintrust of campaign managers are not falling for McCain's Palin distraction.  That is all she is, a distraction.  The polls available to the media and public are overly generous to McCain.  I believe the lead Obama has is much greater and the GOP are aware of that.  People supporting the McCain/Palin ticket are delusional if they actually think she will have any responsiblity or say in his adminstration (if elected)what so ever.   She will be told to sit in a corner and keep her mouth shut.  Come out when needed, wave and smile and then go back to the corner.  She is there for two reason, trying to get women to vote for McCain and to distract people for the GOP's lack of a new agenda and solutions for the US mess, and Obama's kickass campaigning, message, and agenda.  They will not attack her directly, they will let the GOP fall flat on their faces.
In spite of all the reactiveness associated with the pick of Palin it is almost unfathomable, after reflection,  to consider that Palin is ready on day one to be President. No matter how the Republicans spin this, and their spin is just laughable, they have said that in the 21st century Terroism is the trancendent issue. When she was asked her opinion of the Iraq war she said she hadn't really thought about it. Are you kidding me? The entire Party has Flip Flopped on their most important issue. But here is the thing, as silly as McCain is and the party is on these issues, this move could work. And, in spite of promises to the contrary, we well get the Bush-Cheney administration on steroids.  God have mercy on us all.
One more try to have my opinion posted- It seems only those opinions that are anti McCain's VP pick are being posted.  Where is the objective reporting here?  I am a Roman Catholic long time Democrat who usually voted a straight Democratic ticket.  I am  delighted to have a choice now regarding a ticket that is PRO-Life, for someone with a Strong Energy background to complement McCain's strength in national security and defense, and also for both individuals committed to Governmental Reform.  I was an avid Hillary supporter in spite of her pro-"choice" stance.  I am switching now to voting for the McCain/Palin ticket. I was thoroughly disgusted with how Hillary was "dissed" by both Obama and Richardson and other members of the Democratic party. I am a feminist,a professional with a masters degree, who was able to juggle work as an effective administrator, and raise a large family. The more I research Sarah Palin, the more I find that she and I have many of the same family values.  I'm sure there are others like me that have been excited about her addition to this ticket.
One other thing, please note that Sarah Palin is breast feeding her baby.  That fact should stop that ridiculous rumor that she didn't give birth to her own child.
