Gustav and the GOP convention

Advisers say McCain will go to Mississippi today at the invitation of the governor to be briefed on plans for Gustav, NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell reports. These advisers say McCain has talked to Secretary Chertoff and governors Barbour, Riley, Jindal, and Crist. They also say amid contingency planning for the convention, "the gavel will come down" and "business will be done" but "we are not having a party."

Per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Obama yesterday called the threat posed by Hurricane Gustav “a very serious situation,” and Joe Biden warned that the storm could be worse than Katrina, as the two running mates warned residents of the Gulf Coast to heed all warnings. “Even if you’ve ridden out this storm before, even if you think that it may pass over, even if you think that you can wait until last minute, this is going to be, potentially, very, very serious,” Obama told reporters after a campaign event in Dublin, OH. “For your own safety and your family’s safety, people have to follow the instructions of the officials there to make sure that this evacuation is going smoothly.”

Obama said he and Biden had spoken with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, FEMA director Hank Paulson, Sen. Mary Landrieu, and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Biden said that because the eastern, more powerful half of the storm may pass over New Orleans, the impact could be more severe than Katrina’s. “Those folks who rode out, do not ride out again -- ride out of town,” he said. “

With the storm forecast showing it could make landfall just as the Republican National Convention is set to begin, Obama was asked if he thought President Bush should still attend. He said he didn’t “want to weigh into the White House decision-making,” and said the priority has to be on monitoring efforts on the ground closely. He also said he did not want to be a “distraction” himself when asked if he would visit the region. “I will do whatever is required that is useful but right now the main thing that's useful us letting everyone evacuate out there now; please evacuate the area,” he said.

The Los Angeles Times says Gustav “is predicted to make landfall west of New Orleans as early as Monday, just days after the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. But National Weather Service officials cautioned that the hurricane's path could shift and that it could strike anywhere from Texas to Florida in the next few days. Apart from humanitarian concerns, the GOP's image-makers are mindful of the public relations and political cost if the party appears to be partying in Minnesota while Americans are battling to survive a devastating hurricane.”

"You know it just wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster, so we're monitoring it from day to day and I'm saying a few prayers, too," McCain said.

The news that Bush isn’t expected to attend the GOP convention comes at the same time as a New York Times Magazine piece notes the friction between the Bush and McCain camps. “Anxious denizens of Bushworld worry that McCain will beat himself and in the process take down their best chance for deliverance when it comes to the verdict of history. One former Bush aide who spends his days publicly bashing Barack Obama sat down for lunch with me recently and before the appetizers even arrived lamented that the Democrat will probably crush McCain. He ruefully called Obama one of the three most talented political figures of his lifetime, along with John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Bush’s political guru, Karl Rove, in conversations with friends this summer, could hardly restrain his exasperation at what he saw as the McCain team’s dysfunctional organization and sclerotic message. And the president himself … privately rails about what he considers McCain’s undisciplined approach to the campaign and grouses about McCain’s efforts to distance himself from the administration.”

More: McCain has not called the president for advice, so Bush vents his frustrations and criticisms of Obama during phone calls and get-togethers with current and former advisers. (He and Rove still meet for lunch every few weeks.) They say that the elevation of some veterans from their team, like Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace, to key positions within the campaign is making a difference, and there have been signs lately that more order has been imposed on the operation. People in both the McCain and Bush camps take heart in polls showing a closer race than many initially expected. But longstanding suspicions are hard to overcome. ‘You’ve got a lot of people in that campaign who really dislike the president,’ a McCain insider said. ‘There’s still a lot of people who carry a torch for the 2000 campaign.’ Among them, members of the McCain camp say, is the candidate’s wife, Cindy, who remains bitter over the personal attacks on her family eight years ago.”

Why does McCain, his wife and Palin get "invited" for a briefing and not Obama and Biden. Why get invited at all, this has partisan politics written all over it!!
What do you suppose Pat Robertson thinks God is punishing the southeast coast for this time?  Couldn't possibly be the past 8 years of Republican lying, cheating, torturing and stealing, could it.
I can't believe the commentators on today's Meet the Press failed to mention ONCE the well-documented issues that are critical to "change". is creationsism "change", aligning with the NRA "change", drilling in Anwar "change"??? What about healthcare, regaining our leadership position in the world, jobs going overseas, what about "green" fuel initiatives? The American people are once again ahead of the wonks and media.
Unfortunately Hurricane Gustav may further prove that more drilling in the Gulf might be a recipe for record oil spills instead of an energy solution. McCain has also stated that the oil rigs in the Gulf did not suffer any damage from Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

In addition to the 7 to 9 million gallons of oil spilled from damaged pipelines, refineries and storage tanks onshore.

According to the May 2006 report by the U.S. Minerals Management Service. 113 platforms were totally destroyed, and, more importantly, 457 pipelines were damaged, 101 of those major lines with 10" or larger diameter. At least 741,000 gallons were spilled from 124 reported sources (the Coast Guard calls anything over 100,000 gallons a "major" spill). No word from the Oil companies if they plan to rebuild these oil rigs.

U.S. Minerals Management Service published their offshore damage assessment:

Since the Hurricanes are getting stronger due to Climate Change, can Offshore Oil Rigs be built to ensure they can survive Hurricanes without damage? If not, are Offshore Oil Rigs really just a Disaster waiting to happen?
Hunker down southern coast, stay safe.
Hoping that there will be no further deaths caused by Gustav.  Dr. Dobson's prayer requests for rain on the Democratic Conventions sure is ironic.
Despite the the party buisness. I think this is great news. I think it would not be wise not to celebrate while close to a million americans are displaced from their homes. It also has to be mentioned that there were people in the republican party who openedly called on people to pray for rain when Barac Obama anounced that he would be excepting his nomination in an open roof stadium. Funny how things turned out.
McCain went to New Orleans this year and got away with a big con job. McCain faulted Bush for not being present in New Orleans during the disaster. In fact, Bush spent at least a few minutes of that time with John McCain, celebrating McCain's birthday. During his trip to New Orleans, McCain also talked about the assistance New Orleans needed. In fact, McCain voted against appropriations that were for hurricane relief. McCain voted against an investigation into mismanagement of Katrina too.

The picture of McCain and Bush holding the birthday cake during Katrina is all over the net. If John McCain gets away with going to New Orleans and running another con job, the net will be furious and word will trickle out to the rest of the population about how much the media covers up for McCain. Please, at least run the birthday cake picture. It would be better to also point out the con job McCain ran on his last trip to New Orleans and what McCain's real record is.
A couple of weeks ago Focus on the Family asked politically-conservative Christians to pray for rain on Aug. 28, in order to disrupt Barack Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.  Stuart Shepard called for “abundant rain, torrential rain … flood-advisory rain...I’m talking about umbrella-ain’t-gonna-help-you rain … swamp-the-intersections rain.”  Despite this despicable plea, the Denver skies were clear and the weather was wonderful.

God works in mysterious ways.
Yesterday noon (hawaii time) I sent in a blog that cited some of Sarah Palins experience.  No trash talking, no bomb throwing, just a more supportive post than most at that time.   So far as I can tell, it never got posted.   Yet, in one of the blogs above we read,

"More Palin Drama: That baby may not be hers, but actually her grandchild.  Focus on the abdomen of the daughter in the green sweater and in the black/white print dress."  And then four links to photos on the web.

Then again, your intstructions for posting a message here state, "please, no HTML tags. Web addresses will be hyperlinked".  Maybe I misunderstood.   I thought 'no HTML tags' meant you could NOT post links like "Lyn, MD" did above.

I was hopeful that equal treatment would be given to both points of view on the Palin candidacy.  I guess that was a false hope
I guess "Antichrist" Dobson never heard the saying "Careful what you ask for, for you may get it and it may not be what you thought it would be"!  I am so laughing that Mother Nature is blowing away the RNC Freak Show while she gave Obama the perfect weather for his perfect speech.

I'm sure that many who won't be attending are oh so glad that Gustav is saving them from major embarassment.  I love how the MSM is spending so much time reporting on Gustav instead of on the boring business in St. Paul this week.  I know I won't waste one nanosecond watching the boring nonsense from the RNC.  So much more interesting stuff to watch, like replays of Obama's perfect speech.

Only Obama/Biden will bring honesty and integrity back to the White House!

Go Obama/Bidn 08/12!
Senator McCain's claims that had he been in charge during Hurricane Katrina he would have handled things differently are completely Bogus !!! If McCain's claim was True then he would have mentioned it to Bush while the two of them were together at McCain's Birthday Party ..Let Them Eat Cake !!! What a load of Bull ... ....
How befitting to have the party that has done its utmost to thwart carbon dioxide reduction over the last nearly 8 years, to have their convention disrupted by an event that has been linked to Global Warming.
Some will say its instant Karma, others will say that God is on the Democrats side.
What ever, it is the best thing to happen to the Republican Party since Nixon’s disgraced resignation.
The President of my son's PTA is responsible for more people than live in the town where Sarah Palin was mayor.  With all due respect, the whole state of Alaska has a population less than most large American cities.  She's charming and a Supermom and all that, but God help us -- The Ann Coulter-wannabe Homecoming Queen Governor of wacky Northern Exposure?  A hearbeat away from the presidency?

No thank you

uss forrestal mccain
The contrast between how the Obama and the McCain camp conduct themselves is astonishing.  McCain's is disorganized and unfocused.  Obama's runs like a well oiled machine.
I think that McCain's temperament, lack of management skill and poor judgment is taking a toll.  I think his people are afraid of making him angry if they tell him is is making a mistake.  It is scary how this could impact the country.  It is more of the same mismanagement. I wasn't surprised to read that GOP leaders were worried.
Obama is newer on the scene but he has managed to skillfully lead his camp.  His experience as an organizer is serving him very well.  The choices he has made in life as well as publicly are thoughtful, wise and in the nation's interest.  He has clear foresight as well as a noble vision.  He has assembled  an extremely effective team to advise him. His cabinet would be amazing. He has reunited a divided party. We hope he can reunite a divided nation.
Regardless of his experience in government he has shown himself to be an amazing manager as well as a once in a lifetime leader.  That is what we need.
McCain is sorely lacking in these skills.  He runs on honor but has not been loyal to his ex wife when she needed him most. His poor temperament is well known.     He cannot even draw a crowd.  A leader needs followers.

This is KARMA...

The bad will and indifference the Reps showed the Katrina victims is coming back on them by messing up their party plans.
There is no place, during a crisis, for officials to be giving tours to preening candidates.  Just like Bush, it's only for a major photo-op to make them seem to care.  They didn't give a rat's behind three years ago, either.  McCain also voted against all the funding after Katrina.  They are all phonies who look down their noses at us disposable peons.

As for McCain's choice for VP, at first, I thought it had to be April 1st.  Since that's not the case, it proves we need to submit him to a competency hearing.
Why is mccain receiving briefings from the governor and the homeland security director? he's a senator from arizona! wouldn't it be more appropriate for those people to be talking to the president?

oh right-it's all about theatre and LOOKING like you're on top of it even though practically or constitutionally speaking there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING you can do.
Susan Wing--

I, also, was distressed that Maria's gushing about Palin's energy credentials failed to even touch on climate change--more drilling, more oil, more CO2.  I believe Palin is one of 3 people who still believe global warming is a hoax. So, of course, she is in favor of drill, drill, drill.

And, again, QuickDraw McGraw goes where he shouldn't--this time to the Gulf to get in the way of the evacuation/preparations. They are busy and now have to worry with protection of a candidate.
I can't help but point out the irony of a humorist from the ultra-conservative Focus on the Family religious group asking supports to perform a rain dance to create "rain of biblical proportions" during Obama's outdoor acceptance speech and then have  hurricane Gustav provide those rains of biblical proportions during the Republican Convention providing a clear reminder of the failed Bush response to hurricane Katrina.
The ghost of Katrina has come back to haunt the GOP .. I LOVE IT ....
