McCain aware of pregnancy 'last week'

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Top McCain campaign official Steve Schmidt told a scrum of reporters in St. Paul that McCain was aware of Bristol Palin's pregnancy "last week," though he would not say specifically which day last week.

"Senator McCain was aware of this private family matter last week," he said, adding that the senator and governor "had a private conversation" where McCain "became aware" that Palin's daughter was pregnant. Schmidt was repeatedly asked whether McCain knew of the daughter's condition before the announcement on Friday, and each time he used a variation of, "He became aware last week in a private conversation."

Schmidt asserted several times that the Palin family deserves a measure of privacy in this matter. "Leave the kids alone. Leave the kids alone," he said.

He characterized the vetting process as "a thorough search," adding, "she (Palin) is going to help him (McCain) reform America."

"The American have good wishes for this young lady," Schmidt said, adding moments later: "The American people are not focused on nonsense, they are concerned with the well being of their fellow citizens" on the Gulf Coast.

The American people are not focused on nonsense - they are focused on making sure the Palin family values do not become the law of the land.

Schmidt continues to use the hurricane as political cover.

These people are shameless
Oh, this is RICH.  Morning Joe AND Buchanan are against having Palin on the ticket:

You need to hear what they say in defense of Barrack's experience over Palin's.  Pass this on!
Martin, San Antonio TX: '... Sarah Palin as Vice President or President IS the Alaskan bridge to nowhere...'

Great line, Martin !
Let's hope the media asks her REAL policy questions !

Not 'cutesy pie' questions: 'diamonds and pearls?'
Katie Couric will probably ask cutesy pie stuff
George Stephanopoulus will, tĘ”
Give us serious national policy questions
Give us serious foreign policy questions

Obama / Biden '08

WHEN IS THE DEBATE BETWEEN PALIN AND BIDEN ?  I WOULD LOVE TO WATCH THE TWO GO ONE ON ONE AND SEE WHO HAS THE BEST CREDITIALS TO BE A HEARTBEAT AWAY FROM BEING PRESIDENT.
If Palin was thoroughly vetted... why is McCain just now sending eight staffers to Wasilla??

Say No to the Beauty and the Beast Ticket!

Vote Obama/Biden 08/12!
...The hypocrisies just drips from this statement, do they not?
The story is NOT Palin's daughter.

Here's the story:  VETTING-GATE !!!!!!!!!!

The Maverick shoots from the hip...and can't be bothered with research, advice, etc.
Start the chants:

We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!! We want Lieberman!!

Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!! Mitt!!!

Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!! Jin-dal!!!!!
Now that McCain has thrust this totally unprepared Palin and her family into the national spotlight, only HE is to blame for all of the unvetted informtion that will come out.

AND nothing about Palin is any longer a "personal" matter, since McCain outdid himself in irresponsible impulsiveness by picking her as his VP choice!

Just like nothing about Obama or Biden is any longer personal.

Oh John, you've done such harm; and Oh Sarah you have shown such great hubris without much substance.

No one should judge this young woman. BUT, what a bunch of hypocrites Republicans are!

So much for holier-than-thou family values of the Republican conservatives!

OBAMA MOTHER S. ANN SOETORO GOT PREGNANT WHEN SHE WAS 18 YR, SO THAT ARGUMENT IS MUTE WITH SARAH PALIN.
I guess that Sarah Palin's support for abstinence-only sex ed didn't do her family any good.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/09/01/1320417.aspx
I'm looking for the blog on the former Dem Chairman's comments (complete with a chuckle included) about the Hurricane hitting at the same time as the Rep. convention.  Oh, right, I won't find any reference to it on this site, how silly of me
It is not about Bristol or any other children. If Palin wasn't vetted, what else will come up. Campaign contributors should feel confident their $$$ isn't being wasted. And... this announcement doesn't put Babygate and a potential cover-up to bed.
Schmitty, I have news for you - The american people want a commander in chief with good judgment. Mccain nor palin have shown any judgment since friday.
Yeah "Adulterer" McCain knew about this dysfuctional family and still made an ignorant decision.  We don't need the Dumb and Dumber ticket deforming America into another religious fanatic's paradise of no freedom of speech, or freedom of religion like Iran.

Our real American war hero, John Kerry, got swiftboated 4 years ago by a bunch of liars.  Now it's time to expose the dirty truth about these democracy haters amd to repay them for their swiftboating ways.

It appears that "Skirt Chaser" McCain had an overdose of Viagra when he picked her.  Well he can look forward to following in loser Dole's footsteps as the new spokesman for Viagra after his big loss on November 4th.

Only Obama/Biden will bring responsible family planning and birth control back to the White House while preserving a woman's right to choose!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
I'm completely delighted with McCain's VP pick of Palin!

Obama/Biden '08
Allow me to translate: "No, he didn't know. And we're just as pleased as punch to have to be scrambling to fix this."
yeah right! like..friday night after he introduced her to the world...

what a joke....to quote Dennis...

"WAKE UP AMERICA"...dnc convention floor
Joe S even thinks this is BAD

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTbsbeY5k5k

There are too many rumors and stories around this woman
what an embarrassment for the GOP
McShame threw a Hail mary without vetting her
WOW, WOW, WOW
THis shows a real lack of professionalism on behalf of McCain.  Poor judgement.  He obviously did not vet Sarah, way too much is comming out after the fact, DUI, teen pregnancy, ethics investigation, hacking into restricted computers.    Too pick someone with so little experience and so much baggage shows that McCain did this out of spite for notb eing allowed by the right wing who run the party to pick Jieberman.
I really don't think Sen. McCain was aware of this....

why would he announce it on the first day of the Republican National Convention, especially before Sarah Palin's speech?

The difference here is that palin lied and said that was "HER" baby, when it was her daughter's first child.

No one would have cared whos baby it was if she

DID NOT LIE ABOUT IT !!!

That is the difference...
She is introducing herself on the national scene with a LIE and pandering to the Hillary supporters ONLY because she is female.

She believes in NOTHING that Hillary fought for.

So the beauty queen brought her children into the political mix because of her LIE... Not OURS.

We ALL make mistakes, but:

#1. you learn from your first mistake with the guidence of your parents, and don't repeat them over and over.

#2. learning from others - a lie always finds the light of day

Our country has had it's share of lying polititians.

She is not VP material...  PERIOD!

                    E-N-O-U-G-H
The problem seems to be McCain's belief in Obama's stated decency.  He fires up his synchophants to smear and destroy this woman, and then weeps crocodile tears over the treatment of her family.  THEY ARE YOUR PEOPLE, OBAMA.  If you truly despised this type of thing, there would not be so many of them out there spewing this vitriol.

Nothing will convince me that these bloggers were not paid by the Obama campaign.
But the parents are responsible for those children....
and the "do as I do" not "do as I say" must be an example to the family members...or there are deep drill down questions that still remain..and those doubts feed like blood to the sharks in this political challenge...
Truth and repentance is the correct answer the republicans want to know or doubts linger as to that person's ability to lead...
Remember the children are mirror images of the parents..and those role models most be accountable..
Isn't that a bases one some of your policies Dr. Obama? Isn't that part of the change massage or have I been hearing you wrong?..we are expiablely linked?
We don't find fault with the child; we ask the parent if they need help and change..?
John McCain you say one thing than you pander another...We are tired of this fork tongue policies ..
or should we just call you
Senator Flip-Flop from A to Z
This is not nonsense.  It goes to the judgment of Sarah Palin.  If Gov. Palin knew this before she accepted the VP nod, did she give any thought at all to the humiliation she was going to cause her 17 year-old daughter by thrusting her out-of-wedlock pregnancy onto the world stage?  Put yourself into a teenage girl's position.  It is bad enough that her friends and family would have to know, but to have your pregnancy splashed all over the national news must be excruciating for the girl.  What kind of mother would do that to her daughter for her own political ambitions?  I also question Sarah Palin's judgment on choosing to run for the second highest office in the country when she has a special-needs infant who needs her undivided attention right now.
what a wonderful symbol of family value . The mmccain Palin team is good for the republican Party. With a 15 year girl getting pregnant and briefly thinking of abortion beforte deciding to keep the babby.berb
While a child out of wedlock is not the ideal, a family that embraces that baby (not an impersonal "fetus") shows me character.  The ultimate selfishness in these cases is to abort that baby, who has no fault in this, and then either raise the child or give him/her up for adoption.  I only hope this situation brings the abortion debate back onto center stage where it belongs.  It is the slavery issue of our day, and just like with slavery, truth will ultimately prevail over selfishness and convenience.
As for sex education, I'd rather have policies and policy makers who aim high (i.e. abstinence), knowing there will be mistakes and accidents rather than aiming ridiculously low (i.e. liberal sex education with giving out condoms in school, promotion of abortion...etc) and ALWAYS hitting the target.  If I want that kind of morality I'll have my kids watch MTV and Porn.  But I don't, and I appreciate leaders like Palin who believe in young people enough to promote good values, even though they know many will fall short.
To all the feminist bloggers....speaking of porn, where are all your voices when it comes to the ultimate denigrating of women...which is porn???  Why the silence on one of the big issues of our day?  I would think we'd at least find common ground on seeing porn as an insult to Christians and feminists alike....
This is just the tip of the iceberg. If the media does their job they will discover one of the biggest scandals in modern politics. The The Gov. is still hiding the real story. The Mccain camp put this out to try to throw the scent off from the dogs. Trust me it's alot worse!!!!
Senator Obama is correct in saying, leave the children alone. This bit of gossip, even though true, has nothing to do with the issues and policies of John McCain and his running mate. And I don't care what her husband did 20 some odd years ago.

I think the reason that this pregnancy doesn't sit well is because the right always claim to have the moral high ground on family values. Some believe one needs to keep one's own house clean before trying to impose itself on another.

There are too many issues within our country that need to be fixed. It's issues people, issues. Let's stick to that. We need to move our country forward.

Vote for Change
I wonder which pregnancy he was talking about. A recent video belies the notion of Palin being pregnant in July. http://twocanpete.blogspot.com

Hahaha... just shows you that mcCoo-Coo was wanting the newer version of Barbie, not someone that knows what a VP does.  He surely was not thinking with his head.  or was he?

Watch out cindy!  We all saw how he was checkin palin out!  He really likes his beauty queens, doesn't he?

The Beauty & the Beast fairy tale ticket

Mccain = more pain & no brains

I never thought I would say this, but I would rather keep Bush and Cheyney in office then let McCain become president. Sorry, but Obama is giving McCain too much credit: McCain is worst and far more dangerous and dumber than Dubya.
I initially liked this pick as an Obama supporter, as I logically thought it would hurt McSame, but much to my surprise, when I am on other blogs, many are saying that they are voting McCain / Palin! I am beginning to think that the GOP could advance Barney the Dinosaur as their candidate and still win! Oh, I forgot, McShame is OLDER than Barney!
It shows they are a normal family dealing with a teen. The Repubs are brilliant to choose her. It'll excite the far right and take the spotlight off their failures with the economy and foreign policy. It can backfire especially with middle age and older white women like myself. The picture of McCain flanked by two beauty queens highlights him leaving his first wife for Cindy and choosing this woman after only one meeting. Many of my peers were dumped by spouses for younger woman and feel invisable in the workplace while young attractive women jump over them on the career ladder. Most of us with strong family values would postpone a career advancement that required so much time away from home if we had a teen in need along with an infant with special needs. And that goes for Dads and Moms.
Donna, get over yourself.

There are no more paid bloggers for McCain than there are for Obama.

And you have already been called out on being a Rabid Republican Parrot.  So what you say doesn't have much weight anymore.
Just my point.  Woman need to stay home and raise their family!
And Donna, Lincroft, NJ...nothing will convince those of us with a brain cell functioning that you are not paid by the McCain campaign.

And they clearly are not getting their money's worth.
"The problem seems to be McCain's belief in Obama's stated decency.  He fires up his synchophants to smear and destroy this woman, and then weeps crocodile tears over the treatment of her family.  THEY ARE YOUR PEOPLE, OBAMA.  If you truly despised this type of thing, there would not be so many of them out there spewing this vitriol.

-----
Then I assume you feel the same way about all of the bloggers who have been spewing hatred about Obama for months, claiming that he's a Muslim, a terrorist, anti-American, the anti-Christ, etc. If Obama is to be held responsible for liberal bloggers' treatment of Palin's daughter, isn't McCain responsible for everything hatemongers on the blogs have said about Obama and his family?
Is Lobbyist oil money considered public funds...?

Palin smells like oil but reeks of payola..

Transfer of funds from her to McCain is AOK?

Big business always finds a fall guy to make their politicians

get elected..Palin is a phony..Didn't Senator Ted Stevens

endorses Palin or vice-a-versa...bring this story up FR..

teenage pregancy is a common thing these days if it was obama's daughter it would not be mentioned on your network!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Family Values!?!? First, Palin abandons "her" three day old Down syndrome kid to go back to her political career, now the anti-abortion evangelical "Christian" creationist neocon can't keep sufficient control over her 17 year old daughter? What's next from this paragon of Republican evangelical "Christian" neocon virtue?
There is even a story out that Palin's first child was born out of wedlock. What's next? A double wide on the White House lawn? A jalopy on cinder blocks? Possum stew in a pot out back?
These neocon right wing wack jobs pontificate on family values, and have none of their own.
We have endured 8 years of lying, manipulative neocon greedy oil barons with no ethics or morals. Palin is new to this scene, but she has a worthy neocon resume, with troopergate, babygate, and the flip flop on "The Bridge To Nowhere".
As bad as it is about Palin, it exemplifies a worse lack of judgment by McBush. In his zeal to put "election first" instead of country, his first decision as a presumptive Presidential candidate is so utterly unqualified and morally bankrupt.
There is no thinking American who could vote for these two right wing Republican frauds.
Nice to see Donna from New Jersey back spewing her hatred.

I approve of this message and I did not get paid by the Obama campaign.
THAT's not vetting we can believe in .... hehehehe.
"Last week" included thirty-six hours AFTER McCain announced his choice, and at least some additional time earlier after the preparations had gone too far to pull back. My guess is he found out when he saw Bristol at the announcement.

Is it even semi-credible that the professional pols wouldn't have gotten the campaign out in front of this much earlier if they'd actually known before he made the choice?

A real maverick: reckless, clueless and unconcerned with honesty.
Just another window into their so called vetting process and decison making process. McCain's judgement is front and center now to the nation.
Donna, Lincroft, NJ

It sounds like you have given up on your vaunted "THINKING" and are now stuck admitting to only "FEELING". Saying "Nothing will convince me" proves your irrationality on any subject.
"Nothing will convince me that these bloggers were not paid by the Obama campaign. "

Oh, please, Donna--Obama doesn't need to resort to that sort of trash tactics.  The high road suits him just fine. Get a grip.
All we can say - he brought this"Palin-gift" to the country, which he puts first, from the Trash Can.
Thanks, McBush, but no thanks.

And do not fool us with hurricane - all people there are doing what they should. I do not think, You should be there any close with Yout Grbage. You are not the help

I'm sorry Donna of NJ, but I am not paid by the Obama Campaign and do believe that the problem is not with Mrs. Palin but with the impulsive and imprudent judgement of John McCain.  I found Barack Obama to be a very decent man that obviously cannot control every word out of millions of American's mouths and computers.
to Donna, Lincroft Stupid, just say - those bloggers made this kid.
GOP is a party of IDIOTS.
And Picked VP from the trash can
