McCain aware of pregnancy 'last week'

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
Top McCain campaign official Steve Schmidt told a scrum of reporters in St. Paul that McCain was aware of Bristol Palin's pregnancy "last week," though he would not say specifically which day last week.

"Senator McCain was aware of this private family matter last week," he said, adding that the senator and governor "had a private conversation" where McCain "became aware" that Palin's daughter was pregnant. Schmidt was repeatedly asked whether McCain knew of the daughter's condition before the announcement on Friday, and each time he used a variation of, "He became aware last week in a private conversation."

Schmidt asserted several times that the Palin family deserves a measure of privacy in this matter. "Leave the kids alone. Leave the kids alone," he said.

He characterized the vetting process as "a thorough search," adding, "she (Palin) is going to help him (McCain) reform America."

"The American have good wishes for this young lady," Schmidt said, adding moments later: "The American people are not focused on nonsense, they are concerned with the well being of their fellow citizens" on the Gulf Coast.

Whatever...We still need to know who she is and what she stands for.  I know she's not to familiar with the processess but your family business gets dug into sweetie.  I could care less that the daughter is pregnant.  It is a family matter and not one America should be digging into.  She should have not taken the job..
Sarah should stay home and take care of her 5 children. She didn't do a good job with her pregnat teenager. Lack of attention??? How can a woman with 5 children run for VP when she has so much to learn? I am a working woman with 2 grown children. I have no objection to working women with the exception of a woman with a small child with Downs Syndome.
What was Mike Huckabee thinking, forcing this VP pick on the GOP?
Isnt the point that McCain knowingly put this 17 yr old pregnant out there like a sacrifical lamb-to deflect is own inabilities.
If the american people let themselves be sold another bill of good, you deserve whatever happens.

donna, lincroft, nj - educate yourself honey, you sound like an ignorant republican.
Im a single mother of 2, if my mother had spoken to me more about sex and birth control, I would/could have made a better choice. I've never had an abortion but I am pro-choice. I talk to my daughters always regarding sex/bc. My oldest child didnt have sex until after she graduated from college and my youngest is 17 and still a virgin (Im proud to say) All Im saying we as parents need to talk to children more and often regarding sex and birth control, therefore we all have choices.
Obamas Momma was 18 single and pregnat and sleeping with a married Muslum.. ???????????????
If it was a private matter they would have left that poor girl with her grandparents instead of shaming her by trotting her out with blanket covering her pregnant belly!!!!

Using & shaming this 17 year old girl .......... shame on the McCains, shame on the Palins.

Have we not been deceived enough over the last 8 years ......... not four more of putting Party & Ambition before family & country!!!!!

no way, no how, no McCain/Palin!!!!

Senator McCain knew of Bristol's pregnancy last week?  Really?  So why did he announce it this week?

Why did the McCain campaign have Bristol drape a shawl over her and carry her baby brother?  It had nothing to do with concealing Bristol's own pregnancy? If the McCain campaign valued the poor kid's privacy, may be they should have had her stay home in Alaska instead of putting her in the limelight.  Just may be, they should have been up front about this as well and announced that Bristol is expecting a child and to leave her alone.  That'd have given the McCain campaign more credibility than announcing this now AFTER all the rumors about Baby Trig and Bristol all over the Internet.

This is what happens when your campaign theme is "Country First", when, in fact, it is "Campaign First."

The Hail Mary pass can be great, except when it is intercepted in the end zone.  Ouch!
Donna: "Nothing will convince me that these bloggers were not paid by the Obama campaign."

Donna, Donna, Donna...what you seem to forget is that the Democrats have been waiting for a repeat of Republican "Swift Boating" since the start of the campaign.  All of their reactions are simply efforts to strike first (or in retaliation) for the lies and smears of the McCain campaign.  This tit-for-tat started four years ago.  It's funny how McCain's troops love to dish false and malicious comments out to the press, but howl like hell at the slightest negative comment thrown back.
Donna of lincroft nj,were you as outraged by mccain right wing bloggers who said obama was a "n" or a muslim, etc?Come on now.Now you want to blame this on Obama too?I guess you blame gustav on Obama as well. There are independants that put that stuff on the blogs as well, and some republican blogs. And if this was Obama's daughter's you'd be all outraged and against him and demand he withdraw from the race.
The real story is McCain didn't take the time to vet Palin.Oh,let's blame world hunger on Obama while we're at it.Stop your hypocracy.
I hate to be the naysayer here, even so far as contradicting my own candidate, but this IS a serious policy question.  It goes to judgment ... both Palin's and McCain's ... and also to the never-ending hypocrisy of the religious right.  Bristol Palin got pregnant, at least once, despite having an abstinence-loving and contraception-supporting mother.  Or at least so she says.

And by the way, on the point that Bristol Palin was permitted to make up her own mind, we need to recall that she is a minor with parents who believe their daughter should not have an abortion under ANY circumstances.  Not no way.  Not no how.  Now, tell me again, exactly HOW  dependent 17-year-old child in such a situation truly makes up her own mind about this?

Obama may make a decision not to talk about this, but the rest of us have every right to.
Newsweek is reporting that a leading supporter of Hillary Clinton, John Coale, is endorsing John McCain, partly, he says, because Obama is 'not who he says he is".

Oh, and Eric in Salinas:  you didn't get the memo-Obama says you are fired.  You can clean out your desk now.
Oh how the repugnant ones are crying foul and saying families are off limits.  Just like 2000 when "Rove's Boy" Bush bushwhacked "Adulterer" McCain with an illegitimate black baby story?

I still bet that these very same repugnant ones will bring us their family values "Obama had an illegitimate white baby" lie for their October surprise.

Never for one second let up on this Dumb and Dumber ticket now that we have the goods on their lying ways of deforming America into another Iran.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Can you imagine the Right's scorn had a black man's 17 year old daughter been pregnant out of wedlock?
Donna, Donna, Donna........YOU are as delusional as McCain...........
This is to Donna-give us a break.McCain said nothing when the blogs called Obama names and spread lies about him.And no one blamed McCain for what "his" people said.So what you're saying is,McCain should be blamed for all the lies and dangerous this his supporters said?I'm sure you're not saying oh that's different.Right?
Seems we know more about Palin,s kids, births than we do about Obama,s .How about a copy of a real Birth Certificate .Barky By the way did wnybody note old Messiah Barry neglected to mention he lived in Indonesia and Hawaii in his crappy bio video at the convention. Just sayin.
The daughter can have all the privacy she wants.  It's the mom (our potential vp) who is caught in a lie.  She's going to fight corruption in Washington, when there is troppergate and now this.
McCain pared back the convention out of respect of those who live in the Gulf area: politicking and political party self-aggrandizing would certainly leave a bad taste while New Orleans floods on television.

Then he turns around and, if we are to believe he knew about the pregnancy last week, uses the storm as a political device, waiting until Gustav made landfall before unloading this story, hoping that the news would be sufficiently focused on the storm and thereby overshadow or to some degree mitigate the fallout.

Yet another bungling maneuver and terrible judgment by the McCain campaign. Palin was a terrible pick to begin with; this underage, unwed pregnant daughter just makes it so much worse. How is she supposed to raise her family--including an infant with Down Syndrome and a pregnant teen--while filling the role of the VP??
I am just waiting to see how David Gregory and company are going to spin this news in a positive light to help the McCain campaign. I saw this morning in the TODAY show how David Gregory was gushing about what a maverick "reformer" Sarah Palin was. This behaviour of your "journalists" is unreal and does not serve the Country. No questions have been raised about Sarah Palin's own ethics problems, her support of 527s for Ted Sevens, her complete lack of foreign policy experience (which you would think is required of any VP running with a 72-year old that had melanoma), her complete ignorance of basic science facts such that she does not support sex education in schools. No wonder her pooor daughter got pregnant due to ignorance and lack of parental supervision. If David Gergory and all the other irresponsible "journalists" want this woman as VP, then continue protecting the McCain campaign. With this lack of responsible reporting no wonder the pools are close!! God help us all.
OBAMA MOTHER S. ANN SOETORO GOT PREGNANT WHEN SHE WAS 18 YR, SO THAT ARGUMENT IS MUTE WITH SARAH PALIN.

Stewart, Bethesda, MD
++++++++
Barack's mother was married!
Donna - get real!  Just because you are a fool doesn't mean the rest of us are.  If you think we were paid by Obama then you must have been paid by McCain.

Really now.  Just because you don't share our views doesn't mean any of us have been paid off!  Neither camp needs to pay people to have an opinion.
I've never posted on MSNBC, but I absolutely had to because this absolutely cracked me up:

Allow me to translate: "No, he didn't know. And we're just as pleased as punch to have to be scrambling to fix this."
Huck Smalltown, Massachusetts

Indeed and well done!

If Senator McCain had vetted Gov. Patlin, how is it the only found out last week about the pregnancy? Can anyone answer this for me? Wouldnt this be something he would have learned during the vetting? Wouldn't Gov Patlin have told him?
isnt it funny when mcCain bloggers spread rumors that he was muslim i didnt hear mCain say anything now the same knife that stick sheep is sticking the goat and you people blaiming obama get a life.the fact remains the girl is pregnant and this is her second child.the promlem with sarah is she act like she is perfect.teach your kids about sex so they dont get the wrong informatin from other r people she is to busy running down power to be able to raise her daughter in the right and proper way . and it is irrisponcible of senator mcCain topick this woman to run the nation with out propper vetting he is too hot headed.this man dont put is country first.
This is not Obama's fault.Just as McCain can't control all of what the right wing does, neither can Obama. The reason they put this out there now is because the story was about to be leaked anyway.
Get real people.Man,you want to blame Obama for this too?!The real question is,did they really vet Palin. It looks like they didn't.That is the problem.
McCain doesn't have good judgement.Palin is under ethics investigation and he picks her?
Okay, There go the "Family Values" scenarios.  Hmmm...let's see; the "experience" mantra used ad nauseum until last Friday by McCain's world have also suddenly disappeared.  Now the whole, "family values" is getting flung by the wayside.  What's left?  Oh, I forgot, now they can talk about "Roe vs.Wade" because a 17 year old kid from Alaska has decided to keep her baby & get married instead.  But that's okay, because she came to this decision all by herself and her mama & papa had no hand in this persuasion.  Obviously, McCain does not see any problems with this.  But maybe he just can't decide what to do with his "big mistake".  Good thing this young girl's mom & dad earn a decent income.  Alaskans shouldn't have to worry about their "reformed" tax dollars going to pay for the welfare of this blissfully happy young couple & their soon-to-be born child.  I wonder though, Will she finish high school with an HSED or GED, and will they live with the governor & her husband at the Governor's mansion (does Alaska have one...I really don't know); or IF (I shudder at the thought) they will live with them in Washington?  Are these two young people making an income to support themselves and their baby?  Do they have their high school diplomas already? While I realize these kind of life experiences happen in any family, I would dare to say the republicans will be crying foul at the Dems whenever this subject is brought up.  They are already whining that Joe Biden better not "pick on & bully" Governor Palin.  Why?  Because she's a woman?  Or because she's new to the national political scene?  Doesn't this whining just show how weak of a candidate she is and how truly frightened the Republicans are?  I think they are wondering what John McCain is thinking...or not thinking.  At least he won't be able to fall back on his "when I was a POW at the Hanoi Hilton..."  I really can't see where this would fall into play with a young girl being pregnant.  Even McCain is smart enough to stay quiet.  I think....
To Donna, Lincolft, NJ.....You seem to have an awful lot to say about Obama and his supporters.  Yet when he states that Pulins family is off limits and trying to keep to the issues, all you do is "spew" negativity all around.  Just for your info, being in the national spotlight does justify vetting out her personal beliefs and family values.  Sometimes, I wonder when things aren't going the way your party likes them, all you do is "spew" stuff out. When was the last time I heard you say something nice about the demacratic party.
Let's talk about judgement. This goes right to the heart of the matter. If McCain knew before he offered the position to Palin, it goes to his lack of judgement to offer her the position. If he didn't find out until after he offered her the position, it goes to her lack of judgement in accepting. Even if McCain did not find out until after he offered her the position, he should have reneged on the offer prior to the announcement on Friday. It shows he was more concerned about stopping the Obama surge in the polls than making a decision based on his claim to put County First.
A hypothetical situation;
A CEO of a major corporation has two candidates for a position in his company. One has a Doctorate in law from Harvard University (Obama) and the other has a BS degree in journalism (Palin). In real life, Palin would have never even gotten an interview for the job.
This shows the real judgement of John McCain.
Are there absolutely no other qualified women or men in the Republican party to hold the second highest office in the nation? McCain has really put "Country First" with this absurd choice.
This would be the joke of the new century if it wasn't so scary .
To McCain, in the words of gaming forums...

Lrn2vet, noob.
People....please stop and take a deep breath for a second here. This is not about the daughter being pregnant. Many people understand that mistakes happen in life.

This is about the Republican Party's brainwashing of America about how they control the concept of "traditional family values". They have used that line to garner many votes in America when all it is just that... a line. This is just one very visible view into the hypocrisy of their sentiments.

I find it very disturbing that people believe that all Democrats want to bring the concept of family down.

So this story is very relevant from the issue of proving that the Republican Party does not own the mantra of traditional family values.

And since the McCain campaign decided to go public with this story, it is even more fair game.
This is so sad!!!What did we as the american people expect of John McShame? No less!!!!
I truly wish Bristol and her child all the luck and the love this world has to offer............But I am voting OBAMA 08
You have to be a idiot to want to vote  mccain in office, even you republicans should be tired of the nonsense that has plagued us for the last 8 years. Mccain is a bush wannabe, so if bush were able to run again i,m sad to say some of you fools would still vote for him. Wake up and smell the change.

I am more concerned about judgment than smut. I applaude Bristol for living under this spotlight and appologise ahead of time for how her mom has politicized her.

Troopergate, and abuse of power are more important. Above is the link to the letter of recomendation that Palin wrote for Wooten to get him the trooper job. Where was her judgment then, or is she lying now as a personal vendetta?  I have spend at least ten hours reading and listening to Alaskans who no longer trust her, even though they once voted for her. Her actaul favorability ratings among her own legislators and reporters that follow her are in the teens and low twenties, all in less than two years.

Again, I beg Americans to get serious and take their heads out of the sand. It is all about oil and power. Blood of more innocent children will be on the hands of the voters should they make this into a beauty contest instead of the real race that it is.
Shouldn't this have come up during the vetting process--not "last week"?  Shouldn't Palin herself have let McCain know about this months ago?
How old was Bristol and how old is the father is an important questions, considering the law:  "The age of consent is defined as 16 years old, according to Alaska statutory rape laws. If a person who is at least 18 years old engages in sexual activity with a person who is 16 years old or younger, he or she will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree. This charge is a felony in Alaska. And remember, it does not matter if you did not force or threaten the other person into performing this sexual act with you. It is still a crime under Alaska statutory rape laws."

The point isn't Bristol, but McCain...

If he knew about all of her, "issues" before announcing her as his running mate, then he's showing what appears to be some fairly limited judgment.

If he didn't know, then he's exhibiting some really bad judgment in not vetting someone that could realistically become president in the next 4 - 8 years.

It's unfortunate that a teen who made an admittedly bad decision gets to be today's focal point of the judgment of the McCain campaign.  No matter what your political position, the 17 year old didn't ask to the be the daughter of the GOP VP candidate.  Hopefully for her, something else will come up, and she can go back to worrying about being a mother, finishing school, dealing with a wedding, and the multitudes of friends and family that disapprove of sex before marriage.
No matter the push back by Republicans that Palin's daughter is off limits; I am sorry...

You can not go around saying that your the party of family values then say it is off limits when your candidates both display the opposite behavior.

We already know that McCain cheated on and left his loyal first wife after her horrible car accident. He is a total schmuck!

And in the last 48 hours we learn that the unknown governor of remote Alaska is under investigation for trying to fire a state trooper because of a divorce with her sister, that she just had a special needs baby but has outsourced the child care so she can run for office and now her 17-year old daughter is pregnant... out of wed-lock. YIKES!

This has nothing to do with her being a woman, it has to do with her being a responsible parent. If she were a man... a husband... I would say, "GET YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER".

I have 4 kids and 2 are special needs. I can guarantee you that I would not be out running for Vice President full time if one was just born. That is like deserting your wife and your family for pure self interest.

Jesus did not teach us to be self serving... he taught us to be self sacrificing. McCain and Palin both have shown through their lives that they are eager to put their personal needs ahead of their family.

There is no "FAMILY VALUE" in that.
