Despite political respite, Biden hits McCain

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
SCRANTON, PA -- This morning, Joe Biden said today was not a day for national politics. He said it again during a roundtable discussion outside his childhood home here this afternoon. But before long, he couldn’t help himself, criticizing McCain for his views on offshore drilling and questioning his foreign policy judgment.

“The only guy in America in a position of some authority who is out of sync with the whole rest of the world is John McCain,” he told a small group of relatives and old family friends. “This Administration, the Iraqis, NATO, the Europeans, our friends around the world, the vast majority of the American people, the Democratic-controlled Congress, Republicans in Congress -- they all agree. Barack Obama was right, and John McCain was wrong.”

Biden was referring to Obama’s call for a timeline for withdrawal, something he said he’s now preparing to see through as an agreement between the Bush Administration and the Iraqi government comes to his desk as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee. He compared that to McCain’s claim that a timeline would be tantamount to surrender.

He also said the Republican nominee’s statement that Obama would lose a war to win an election is embarrassing. “Barack Obama was ahead of the curve; John McCain is still way behind the curb,” he said. “I promise you. I promise you. We will secure America.”

The Delaware senator called the return to the Green Ridge neighborhood an emotional one. And he offered personal testimony as to Obama’s readiness to be president, and perhaps as importantly, his personal qualities. “I promise you, my word as a Biden -- if Barack grew up in our neighborhood like he did in Kansas [sic] being raised by his grandparents, if he grew up here being raised by his grandparents, he’d have been our friend,” he said. “He’d cover your back.”

Biden was joined by his brother, Jimmy, two cousins, and his mother, Jean. And he joked that those who think he’s a bit verbose ought to spend some time with mom.

“They ain’t been around my house,” he said.

And before the roundtable, he toured his old home, now owned by Anne Kearns. He even signed the staircase, writing in Sharpee, “I am home. Joe Biden. 9.1.08.”

“If my father were here he'd smack me,” he said.

*** UPDATE *** McCain spokesman Ben Porritt responds: "While John McCain has called upon Americans to serve and assist our fellow citizens in the gulf states, Barack Obama's own running mate, Joe Biden, clearly has no limits when it comes to political attacks. Either Barack Obama's claims of bipartisanship are empty or he is unable to control his running mate."

*** UPDATE II *** The Obama camp fires back that McCain aide Steve Schmidt and Karl Rove criticized Obama on this supposed day off of politics.

This is so typical of Biden...he makes a statement once, twice...and then forgets what he said????

I guess this is why he got about 3 votes in the democratic primary...

And it would be simply appalling if Biden or his group had tried to use the pregnancy of Palin's daughter as political capital...
What about the crap the GOP convention is spewing about Biden from Karl Rove? They aren't taking a political respite so don't make it seem like Biden is chomping at the bit.
Biden is rock solid and complements the ticket.  Democrats should keep asking the voting public:  "Are we any better off than we were eight years ago?" The Republicans have raised greed and corruption to a level unprecedented in our history.
"he told a small group of relatives and old family friends" - Since when is discussing politics or any other topic with family and relatives considered a national public attack on anyone? Aparently Mr. Biden is going to make a good "fighting" Vice President. I hope Obama can control him...
To start I'm a Biden fan -- matter of fact the only wise decision Obama's made to date in my opinion, but get used to this if Obama is elected...reversing their words & not holding themselves to their own standards...Example: "not a day for  politics." Breath but, "McCain is wrong."

Way to keep your word.  Tax, tax, tax & he may pull us out of Iraq but it will be hasty & we'll be back.
You Go Joe!  Yeah, Sock it To Him as we used to say when I was young.

We don't need some moron running foreign policy who sings "bomb, bomb, Iran", when he wasn't even competent enough to bomb North Vietnam once.  Next he'll want to bomb Russia!  See how the repugnant ones have brought back the Cold War fo their political gain.  Putin was very correct to say that one American presidential candidate has been behind this clueless Georgian attack on the big bad Russian Bear.  We all know it was "Warmonger" McCain and his clueless lobbysist advisor who made $800,000 blowing smoke up Saakhasvili's behind so he would make the stupid choice that cost so many of his countrypeople their lives and homes.

Isn't it rather hypocritical that we supported Kosovo's breakaway from Serbia, Russia's friend, yet we don't support Abkhazia's or South Ossetia's breakaway merely because Russia supports them?  Are we supporting democracy for all by only supporting it for those who would be our friends?  Total double standard and why our standing on the world stage suffers so greatly.  If we supported Serbian independence then we should support Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence as well.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
It looks like there's alot of on shore drilling going on too...McCain is bundling money before the nomination..to give to Gov.Palin...there's the pay off to safe the oil cronies stash...there's more to it than meets the eye...but ask John McCain about Ted Steven's endorsement of the Gov. Palin's candidacy for Governor of Alaska..see if we get the viagra reponse...public funding comes from some of the most inventive ways....Pressures on John..the merits of this race are in your hands...don't blow it...You will see where negative leads you...
Joe Biden succinctly pointed to the truth; because the GOP has come full to adopt Obama's ideas, the real leader.
McCain was wrong not to vet Palin.

This vetting process proves three wrongs and three lies…

Sarah cannot guide her teen-age daughter; therefore, is not capable of leading this powerful nation.

Abstinence instead of safe sex doesn’t work.

McCain doesn’t care about anyone and is politiczing Hurricane Gustav; because hypocritical, undiagnosed early Alzheimer’s, PTSD McCain voted 5x against hurricane relief.

It’s seems he forgot that he received a large birthday cake and Katrina victims got nothing from selfish McCain. Well there’s the hypocrisy of loopy, lost in the wilderness McCain’s clear judgment.
Enough!
No way
No how
No McCain!
Nobody but Obama
Obama/Biden 08/12

Joe's right.  The Repubs took swipes at Biden today too despite their public "comittment" to put country first.  These people are good at slight of hand folks.  Anyway, its clear McCain has a "vetting" problem which translates to lack of preparedness. First he failed to vet the preachers spewing hatred at the catholics.  He then failed to do his homework on Sunni/Shia and now it appears that he has fumbled the ball with Sarah "Wasilla Mama" Palin and her clan.  Say what you will about "W" but we know at least he prepares by reading something before bedtime at 8pm.  I'm no Obamaniac but we just don't have the tolerance for every press conference during a McCain presidency to begin with the words: "Oops.  My bad!"
What a joke political coverage is becoming. Reporting about a DUI some twenty years ago, or a teenage pregnancy in the Palin family.  The media needs to focus on the issues.  There is plenty to be said about VP pick Palin's extreme right wing policies and views without personal attacks against her and her family.

And how about all this genuine concern coming from Republicans about the hurricane!  I'm not sure how many hurricanes there have been since Bush took office, or how many since Katrina, but are Americans really going to be fooled by this political ploy?  Bush & Cheney both were too busy to attend the convention?  I'm sure they would be devoting the same time and energy to this if this weren't an election year and convention week.  And even the republican candidate is needed?
This is a man who understands what family values and the true American Way is all about!

Keep up the good work, Joe!

Obama/Biden all the way!
"clearly has no limits when it comes to political attacks."

He has limits; he was using the Republican limits.
Control his runningmate? Oh, so that is why McCain choosed Palin, so he can control her?
O stop it! If the shoe had been on the other foot, McCain himself would've been the one doing the talking. And Oh, BTW, Biden spoke the truth.  The truth hurts.
So Joe Biden has a conversation with family and friends....is that not allowed?

Let's look into something else that is hovering over Palin now....her connection to AIP (Alaska Independence Party) which actually advocates the secession of the State of Alaska from the United States.  It seems she has been, and maybe still is, a member of this party.  Is there any evidence that she or her family was vetted by the McCain campaign?  Troubling to say the least.
"McCain spokesman Ben Porritt responds: "While John McCain has called upon Americans to serve and assist our fellow citizens in the gulf states, Barack Obama's own running mate, Joe Biden, clearly has no limits when it comes to political attacks...."

Oh please.  Don't take the high road now after spending an entire summer hurling lies and accusations at Obama.  Obama is smart enough to stay out of the way of the hurricane and let the officials in the affected states do their work, while your guys are using it as a photo-op.

Obama/Biden '08
Keep up the good work Joe!!  And besides, he was with family and friends - I do believe this is all kitchen table issues and he was discussing with family and friends.  Since when is that political gamesmanship.  Give me a break.  ENOUGH!!!!
Troopergate then Babygate, now Bridgegate! Palin is caught in an outright lie documented by Anchorage paper. Read it at
read it at http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
Bridgegate erupts!
Good for Biden.
McCain again puts politics firwswt, country LAST....the last thing people down there need is him and his people there getting in the way. He requires police, fireman, secret service and security, so he took those people away from the job they need to do for the peoplke

Once again

McCain - POLITICS FIRST, COUNTRY LAST
Everytime someone mentions off-shore drilling I can only think of north to Alaska!
So when is First Read going to cover the breaking story that Palin is a former member of the AIP, an Alaskan successionist movement ?

Isn't such membership treason ?
It's really pathetic to see McCain people grasping at anything to attack Obama-Biden, after Sen. McCain did the most unwise and wreckless thing by selecting a woman, just to pander to the women voters, without any regard for the welfare of this country. In spite of all the spins, the American people know real well who REALLY cares about America and Americans, and who is trying to fulfill his ambition.
PALIN HIRES LAWYER TO HELP WITH TROOPER GATE

It keeps getting WORSE
Right Joe. Say ,didnt I see you on a hair plug commercial. I think maybe implanting those things impacted on his brain.Whats in your wallet, Joe? Every credit card company .Whats in their pocket? you By the way is a Kos blog?God so many lefty whack jobs.
Well done Biden!!!  The McCain camp forgets that on the night that Senator Obama accepted the nomination, they promised not to attack the Obama camp on that night. However, they could not resist and proceeded to attack almost as soon as they made the process.  The republicans like to play games, but Biden will beat them at their games.  Go Obama-Biden!!!
I posted a longish, venting blog earlier, but I wanted to ask my question again in the hope that somebody can give me a response.

I heard (don't know where) that political campaigns could accept frequent flier miles as a valuable contribution. Is that true? If so, how do I go about making the transfer? I have scads of points, and would be pleased to put them to better use than a freebie trip that I really don't need. I am willing to do whatever I can to help the Obama/Biden cause.

But then again, maybe I should send them to Palin who obviously has never traveled outside of the USA! Her selection as a potential POTUS is beyond insane, and her views on sex education have come home to roost.
Good move Joe!  Hand it right back to them.  Family Values = unmarried and pregnant.  We're going back to the "Dark Ages".  This former McCain County Co-Chair from 2000, says "John, admit you goofed, tell the right wing to go you know where, and call Romney or Pawlenty or Portman or even Lieberman, but for heavens sake lose Palin before it's too late."
Mccain has voted against every aid package for the Katrina victims.  No one is falling for his false concern for these people.  He wasn't concerned on his birthday 3 years ago when Katrina hit and he and Bush were celebrating his birthday over birthday cake instead of helping the victims.

No...the race is on and Biden is a scrapper so don't act like you don't want a fight now.

It's on!!!
Thank goodness for Joe Biden.  A man who has the experience, class and ca hones to call it the way it is.  Enough picking on Palin.  She comes with baggage.  So what, we all do.  It's McCains choices we should worry about.  Huge BRAIN FART McCain.  I'm 52 and have those.  Can't imagine what it will be like at 72!!
Obama/Biden 08'
Go Joe Go!!! Hit 'um and Hit 'um Hard!!

Why does everyone thing that McCain and his "newfangled" running mate will be let off easy?

Now lets just sit back and watch the news media take McCain's position about how Obama is playing politics in a time of crisis.

Just watch.

You Rock, Nashville_fan,

Say, I send in a good number of posts that "do not" get selected for publication on these boards. I harbor no illusions as to "why" some are rejected. They're angry posts! I'm angry! Some of the ones that do get published "still" reflect that anger. I am not ashamed of that, and I will not be put off in asking the tough questions about Palin's record/qualifications/etc. Every Democrat should be right there asking those same questions with me -- over and over again! Who [IS] this Palin woman??

For way too many years now, Republicans have been in charge of this country and they have screwed things up royally. You’re a bunch of cowboy F__K-Ups! And what’s worse, some members of the media consistently give you a pass for your pathetic record. No one trusts you to lead fairly. Your party does not represent progress; it represents regression, repression of ideas, and inequality. Republicans hardly deserve a "do-over", nor do they deserve to be let off the hook for all the lies they willingly told that get us into an unjust war. For the seemingly endless droves of single issue, simple minded individuals, who populate the Republican party, (the creationists who sporadically post some mindless "dribble", on here) usually attacking Democrats for calling Sarah Palin's idyllic sounding Family Life, “a lie”, or heaven forbid, questioning her utterly deficient qualifications to be VP for anyone. Remember now – she has "5", count'um -- {{{FIVE}}} Kids!!! Wow. Five kids does it for me…she’s my candidate for sure! Nothing else matters anymore! How silly. I hate to remind the faith-based crowd, but isn't that number kind of excessive for one marriage in the age of global warming and overpopulation? Oh, I forgot, Ms. Palin doesn’t believe in Global warming, or science. But [By God] you better never get an abortion or you and your doctor could go to jail! Don’t even think about being “Gay” and getting treated fairly, that’s not in the cards for you – so sayeth, the dear Mrs. Palin. ENOUGH!

The Republicans consistently demonstrate bad decision making practices, yet they continue to win elections. Why is that? There is no more recent example of extreme bad judgment than John McCain’s choice of a beauty-queen runner-up for VP. I hate to inform you Johnny, but this isn't a beauty contest, it's a race for the future of all Americans – not just for Republican special interests. Having said that, does it surprise hardly anyone that the overall "feel" from the majority of posters on this site is, yep, you guessed it -- Anger!!!! And the majority of that anger is justly directed at the Republicans and their horrible botch-job they have done on this country! There are certainly a few things the Republicans are good at (a little “too” good at) – e.g.; distorting the truth so they can hang on to power at all costs; enriching the few at the expense of the masses; lying with a straight face in light of the obvious truth, forcing their conservative agenda down everyone’s throats, starting unjust wars, draining the US Treasury to fund said wars, exploiting the individual differences Americans have for their own political gain, etc., etc.. These are the policies you support if you support the Republicans – no matter how they lie and say it isn’t so. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I think about how the Republicans have run this country into the ground for the Middle-Class. It's just mind-numbing. So yes, sometimes, I just want to write an angry, incendiary Rant, because it makes me feel better to get it off my chest. As an American, I am damn angry at the state of affairs this country is in. I just can't imagine how "serious" the Republicans are about really changing anything that is in the best interest of the American people after seeing this rather “outside the mainstream” choice for a running mate? One thing is for sure, the Republicans are all about furthering the interests of major corporations and the rich. Where are their values that extend to the Middle-Class? I don't really see any.

Finally, it is important to remember these boards are refereed by the "MSNBC Thought Police". On any given day, in keeping with the story line they want to put forward, they more or less "whitewash" just how angry a majority of people on here really are!! I am sure they delete a majority of the “really angry” posts. That can’t hide the fact that the Republican party, under the dubious leadership of George W. Bush and John McCain "types", are 100% to blame for the mess we are in today -- not just on the warfront, but also on the "home front". It appears that many Republicans seem to care very little about the home front – unless it is one of their own “homes”. Thanks to the Stage-Coach, Shot Gun diplomacy of “ride-hard, shoot first and ask questions later”, -- espoused by the Bush League, the United States is seen as a "rogue nation" in the minds of so many other countries around the world. We are getting involved, for all the wrong reasons, in more and more conflicts and wars. That is a direct 180 degree turn around from economic prosperity and the status of America at the end of the Clinton Presidency -- no matter what any Republican says about it -- it is a fact. We are so much worse off, in so many ways. Do Republicans actually "get that"??? The 'Monster' your party has become under GWB greatly diminished our image around the globe, and undermined the vast majority of public good will toward your policies back home. Under Republican leadership, the "moral" authority of the United States, an issue that so many Republicans go on and on about, has been destroyed by your own self-righteousness, and malice toward others that do not agree with your agenda. You even politicized the Justice Department to try and cover up for the 8 year reign of King George Bush II – Liar in Chief. This nation suffers from a sickness, the sickness of narrow-mindedness, the fool-hearted deference to religion, to the exclusion of science. Have you no shame, Republicans??? The anger reflected by so many posters on here is indicative of how America feels in general. Maybe if you picked someone with a little more "character" and a lot more intelligence" for President, as opposed to someone "who you would want to have a beer with", we wouldn’t be in this shape. Look where the “beer model of character analysis” got us today. All progressive minded people should understand that this Sarah Palin is Hell Bent on overturning Roe v. Wade. Make no mistake about it – this will happen if the Republican ticket (as it stands now) gets elected. The Republican Party of 2008 (and so many years before) exemplifies all that is wrong with the way some Americans think. Politics in this country should not be a "game", as Senator McCain obviously sees it, it should be a fundamental judgment call about which candidate best represents the interests of every American, and has the intelligence and judgment to put that to greater use, for all – not just the privileged few. This election is so much more important than the politics of self-interest. The outcome of this election determines whether or not we succeed as a nation. It is "that" important.

Don't screw this one up America.
So he was talking to friends and he is telling the truth.
The whole thing is political.  Instead of just doing the business of the day for their convention, they are using it to paint the image of the republican party as trying to help those in need.  Shame on the GOP.  I agree the speeches should have been canceled, I do not believe the media should be so kind to them for trying to turn the hurricane into a media spectical for John McCain.
Palin eloped with her high-school boyfriend, Todd Palin, on August 29, 1988, when she was 24 years old. "It was a shock but she did it because she knew we couldn’t afford a big white wedding", her mother said.

44-19=25

Was Sarah pregnant when she married Todd?
16 month withdrawl from Iraq, hasty?  A phased withdrawl, in light of the fct that the Iraqis want us out of their country within 16-20 monhts, hasty? Care to revise you comment?
Once again, it's the republicans who believe they are the judge and jury, arbiters, and last word on who, when and where when it comes to political attacks...
Watch as the right hypocritically extol the virtues of Bristol Palin's pregnancy and her decision to keep the baby, marry the father; what wonderful love and support she has from her family. Yet they viciously attacked Britney Spear's sister for the same choices and decisions calling her "immoral and the product of bad parenting." Again, they are the judge and jury, arbiters and final word on values and morality.
The best only for Bristol Palin...AND Jamie Lynn Spears.
have you ever noticed Fox hires every rejected, republican jerk they can get their hands on. Keep going Joe. Schmidt and Rove poster children for abortion.
Keep right on a trucking, Joe.
If America had done what Obama suggested Iraq and Iran shites would have over taken Iraq and Kuwait by now and gas would be $10+ a gallon. We need leadership that will keep peace in the mid east and oil flowing. To cut and run without looking back can't be an option if we want secrity in the mid east.
Go Joe Go!!! Hit 'um and Hit 'um Hard!!

Why does everyone think that McCain and his "newfangled" running mate will be let off easy?

Now lets just sit back and watch the news media take McCain's position about how Obama is playing politics in a time of crisis.

Just watch.
where's the news that palin was never vetted?
Palin said she didn’t know what the VP job entailed, but does she even know what a mother’s job entails. She was leaking amniotic fluid, but gave a speech and then proceeded to board a plane for an 8 hour trip back to Alaska. This was her fifth kid and he was diagnosed with down syndrome. What would have happened if she had given birth on that plane? No doctors and a baby with special needs. This was her 5th kid which usually means they come very fast.  So she had the baby and goes back to work the next day. No time to bond with him or welcome him into his new life. Nope back to work! Maybe if she spent some time with her kids her 17 y/o daughter would not be 5 months pregnant. She knows her daughter is 5 months pregnant and would be the center of attention if this were to come out, so what does she do? She throws her daughter situation out for everyone to know because a rumor was being circulated about her last pregnancy.  There were other ways to handle this w/o outing her daughter. Yes, a loving mother with family values. Maybe if she would have talked to her daughter about responsible sex or allowed it to be taught in schools there could have been a different outcome. Ignoring problems does not work!
Something tells me that we will be moving back conventions from now on to avoid hurricane season.
WHO CARES WHAT THE REPUBLICANS AND MCINSANE'S CAMPAIGN SAY!

THEY DID NOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THEIR VP AND HER "TWICE" PREGNANT 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER!

THEY HAVE NOT SAID WHAT COLLEGE SARAH ATTENDED AND WHAT HER GRADES WERE!

THEY HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE LIES ABOUT SARAH'S APPROVAL RATINGS IN ALASKA -- NOT 80%, BUT 65% AND RAPIDLY DECLINING -- SOME SPECULATE IT IS IN THE TEENS!

THEY HAVE NOT SAID ENOUGH ABOUT THE LIE TOLD ABOUT  SARAH'S HUSBAND WORKING FOR BP (AN OIL & GAS COMPANY) AND NOT A COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN!!

THEY HAVE NOT SAID ENOUGH ABOUT SARAH'S LIES ON THE BRIDGE TO NOWHERE!

THEY HAVE NOT SAID ENOUGH ABOUT SARAH'S LIE ABOUT HER WATER BREAKING IN ARIZONA AND SHE TRAVELS BACK TO ALASKA -- EVERYONE WOMAN IN AMERICA KNOWS THIS IS A LIE!!!

THE REPUBS HAVE NOT SAID ENOUGH ABOUT HOW THIS COUNTRY IS ECONOMICALLY BANKRUPT.

THE REPUBLICANS -- ESPECIALLY BUSH AND MCINSANE CAN KISS MY DOG'S BEHIND!!
Schmidt and Rove are bully whinney-babies!  They throw punches, but you better not hit them back!

Joe Biden is right and they are wrong!  The republicans are so PO'd. They know they can't push Senator Biden around.
go Joe! republicans don't play nice so we gotta be tough
McCain is a fake!!!I have never been so enbarrassed of being a women!  With all the strong political and highly educated women McCain could have chosen, he chose someone that is just suppose to be seen not heard.  How insulting!!!!If the Hilliary voters had any doubt, and they were truly supportive of Hillary's values, then they will not vote for McCain!! McCain has just took women back 200 years, after all the hard work that Hillary and other Political women have worked hard for!!!To compare a Harvard Law (President) School Graduate with honors to a Jounalist that graduated from Univ of Idaho, please Give Me A Break!!  As a Hillary supporter you have just made up my mind for me, I'm voting for Obama/Biden!!!!At least my kids will be safe in the future!!!
