The Palin church video

Posted: Tuesday, September 02, 2008 6:04 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Michael Levine
As questions have been raised over how thoroughly Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign vetted Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for the V.P. slot, it seems the McCain campaign was unaware of a video -- available online -- in which Palin talks about God's role in U.S. military action overseas, according to a political operative familiar with the situation.

The video, first reported by the liberal blog HuffingtonPost.com, is from a June Palin speech to the graduating class of commission students at Palin's former church in Wasilla, Alaska. While describing her family, Palin told students about her oldest son, 19-year-old Track, who is set to be deployed to Iraq this month with the U.S. Army. She urged students to pray “that our leaders -- that our national leaders -- are sending [soldiers] out on a task that is from God.”

She added, “That's what we have to make sure that we are praying for: that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan.”

“It's pretty uncomfortable stuff,” said the political operative, after watching the video online. “It's bad. It's really bad. … It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.”

In addition to talking about Iraq, Palin also referred to God's role in her work as governor.

“I can do my part in working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline, about a $30 billion project that's going to create a lot of jobs for Alaska. … [but] I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that,” she said. “I can do my job there in developing our natural resources, in doing things like getting the roads paved and making sure our troopers have their cop cars and their uniforms and their guns, and making sure our public schools are funded. But really that stuff doesn't do any good if the people of Alaska's hearts aren't right with God.”

It wasn't all serious, though. At one point during the address, Palin praised the graduating class as “a bunch of cool-looking Christians.” Then she picked out one student in the crowd and said with a smile, “Ben, I don't know you well enough yet, but looking at you, I'm thinking, people are going to interested in Jesus Christ through you because of the way you look - this red-headed Sasquatch for Jesus. You look good!” The students cheered. “Times are really changin'. And with the times that change, looks even change.”

The seven-minute speech is posted on the Web site of Palin's former church, the Wasilla Assembly of God. But, the political operative said, the McCain campaign seems to have had no knowledge of it when Palin was announced as McCain's running mate on Friday.

Jesus...
Wow. Just... wow.
I am honestly sick about this whole thing.  I am a woman, a mother of 4 and an independent.  This woman is the most terrifying politician in recent history to be a "hearbeat" away from the presidency.  She thinks Iraq is God's will????  She doesn't even know what is in the constitution it would be her duty to protect.

She is worse than George W. and I shudder to think what the rest of the world will think if this ticket wins.  When George W. won a second term the front page of one of the London papers was "How Dumb Can Americans Be?"  I honestly hope that we don't elect this joke of a ticket and prove just how dumb we are yet again.
Seriously? God wants a pipeline through Alaska and Canda?

Seriously?

And the Iraq war is a mission from God, seriously?

What a trainwreck of a VP pick.

OMG!!!!!!
My gosh, someone talking about God's role in something! Will the horrors ever cease?!?
This is another example of why the dems need to jump all over this right wing nutjob!! I can't believe that no one has begun questioning her patriotism considering her involvement with a political party that wants Alaska to Secede from the US. In my mind that is the most unpatriotic thing one can do short of treason!!!
As a life-long Republican, this will be my first vote in a presidential race for a Democrat.  I am so tired of the Christian Conservative Right trying to take over my party, and have all their views and policies pushed onto me.  I have had enough. I DO NOT want another election about babies and guns!!!!!  How about the issues and the economy???!!!
I saw this video. I have no problem with organized religion. But, when a political leader -- governor, senator, etc. -- starts saying that it is God's will that we are in Iraq and that we should pray to God that a gas pipeline gets built....any objective American knows that is crossing the separation of chruch and state line. And, for all you haters, remember she was there *as the governor of Alaska*, not as a private citizen.
How does it feel RNC to have 'smears'?  Remember~ what you send out will come back.
Like it or not, it is a universal principal that no one can escape.
The republicans have been smearing for so long that they just do it without thought of consequence.
Wellllllllll..............
Isn't this special....hmmmmmm?
Just another way of saying she hopes (and prays) we're doing the right thing.

The Huff n' Puff Post's take on it is irrelevant to me, as are the expected knee-jerk responses we will all see from 90% of responders here.
As a life long Democrat, I'm switching and voting for the Republican. It's about time we bring a guiding force back into our lives and to this country. Sarah Palin is just what the country needs.
Of course the McCain campaign knew about it, My Friends...  She was very thoroughly vetted... (rushedthroughbyRovewithnosuitablealternativesakawearsadress,shootsmoose)...

The know about it all.  And it goes to show well towards McCain's judgment that he knows about all the scandals and the ultra-Right conservatism, and that's WHY he chose her.  Because he recognizes that she's been Chosen.  She's a "One", too.

Hey - The video is gone!  I can't access from the link you provided!  Where did it go?
We're on a mission from God.

And the hits just keep on coming!! If this wasn't such a serious election this would be almost funny. This women will be one heart beat away from the Presidency to quote Arron Sorkin "these are serious times that need serious people and Sara your 15 minutes are up"
As I recall, Jake and Elwood Blues were on a mission from God.

They ended up in jail.
Someone is running for office that puts their trust in God? Liberals aren't going to like this at all.
Justifying a war through YOUR chosen God sounds dangerously like the same view taken on the other side. What is this? A game of hockey??? I swear sports and church are great suppliers of army's for nations and why both are INTEGRAL components (not to be dismantled) to government power. Don't question authority! Don't question common sense! Play Ball!
This woman is very scary and should not be anywhere close to the presidency of the United States!!! America, please wake-up!!! Obama and Biden have the intelligence, wisdom, and experience to lead us and effectively govern this country andno longer let our government be run by corportations...McCain and Palin are products of this system and it is time for our country to once again offer peace and prosperity to ALL!!  ENOUGH!!!!!!

OBAMA/BIDEN O8'
It's not in God We Trust. It's in Obama We Trust.

Obama/08
How does Sarah Palin know what God wants? Is she claiming Divine knowledge now? If so, perhaps she should have taught her own kid that little commandment about adultery and fornication.Or maybe God told her it was okay. I'm praying she pulls her head out and develops a little awareness that this Country belongs to all people of all faiths (remember the Bill of Rights?)..
She's praying that we are doing the right thing.  She's praying that Alaskans are truly unified behind the gas pipeline project.

Seems reasonable to me.
Sadly, this will help her with the Right Wing Christian base.

Sadly.
Can't access the site you provided!  Where is it?
You gotta love those church videos - this is more karma for the neocons going after Obama about reverend Wright, the big difference of course is Mrs. Palin is the one doing the talking.
The Republicans will love this.  The Demorats will hate this.  The Independents will be very concerned.
Still waiting for Politico to link to the audio of Sarah Palin's interview on a rado talk show in which one of the male hosts calls the President of the State Senate, Lyda Green, a cancer survivor, a bitch, a cancer that has to to, and makes fun of her as a mother and of her weight - all the while Palin giggles and laughs.  At the end the host says he'd like to come visit Palin, and Palin says she'd be honored.  Evidently, like McCain, who stood silent as someone at one of his town hall meetings called Hillary Clinton a bitch, Palin either agrees with the sentiments being expressed or doesn't have the character to take on jerks like this.
Barb, LA--Well said.  This VP pick is SCARY!!!  Democrats need to stop being so PC and vet this woman for the American people--clearly McCain isn't going to do it.
What a nutt!!!
SCARY, SCARY, SCARY!!!  I thought GW was the worst we could do but she takes the cake.  Separation of church and state, guess she never heard of it.  Doubt she is all that familiar with the Constitution (of course neither is GW)  Thank you John McCain, it will be a easy path to victory for Obama.
As a prObama Christian, I'm uncomfortable with this line of impeachment of Governor Palin. She proclaims that she loves Christ and hopes that God directs the path of our leaders and that's a big deal? If this is a big deal, I wonder if it's because those of us who support the Democrat, the anti-Republican, the liberal, the secular humanist, the rational, or the first-time-voter Obamaite point of view [in this election, or in politics] often only want to support that view to the exclusion of others.
Tal- I- Ban!!
Say it loud, I'm a religious nut, and I'm proud!
(Sorry, James Brown)
Let her stay in the race - she will absolutely torpedo any slim chances that McCain may have had left.
Constant stream of un-vetted lunacy. Privately, McC is putting the whole clan in a black Suburban for a side ram off the Bridge to Nowhere...publically, this train-wreck is preparing to withdraw 'for family reasons'. Prepare for Ridge.
On the other hand, her nomination might prove that God loves Democrats.  As a Barack supporter, I really love this girl!
At first glance, this didn't seem bad at all.... but it seems to me that Sarah Palin was trying to use God's name for political reasons and for her own self-promotion for her political success.

please stop the madness.

I now have the necessary ammunition to tell people they are NUTS if they support McCain/Palin.

this woman TERRIFIES ME!
I will say one more time.  McCain does not have the judgement or the temperament for being President.  How could he possibly try to convince Americans that this was the best choice?

It is clear that this woman was not vetted.  It is time to vote for your life...it is clear that McCain will gamble American lives away.  This is devastating.

No Way, No How, No McCain
ALL YOU PEOPLE PUTTING HER DOWN FOR HER RELIGION=NEED TO GET SOME OF YOUR OWN=HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF FREEDOM OF RELIGION AND SPEECH DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH, NO I FORGET YOU LIKE THE KARAKOKE IMITATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING BY YOUR OBAMA BOY.  wHAT A JOKE HE IS.
I guess David Duke turned McCain down?
Hey no problem you will be accused of being a sexist for bringing this up. Or John McCain will claim you are demeaning the troops by questioning Palin. For all that Obama has been smeared about this lady takes the cake.  How can anyone claim she is qualified. She makes Bobby Jindal and Huckabee look like moderates. So let me get this clear God is on her side. To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln " I hope we do the right things to earn God's blessing". According to Palin she has a direct pipeline to him since she is a Christian.
I don't know about you, but I kind of like that whole "seperation of church and state" thing we have going on in this country.
This is how terrorist are made.
