The Republicans' Bush problem?

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Ben Weltman
With President Bush speaking tonight by remote to the Republican National Convention and set to visit hurricane-stricken Louisiana tomorrow, it's worth pointing out the president's remarks this morning.

“We recognize that the pre-storm efforts were important and so are the follow-up efforts -- in other words, what happens after the storm passes is as important as what happens prior to the storm arriving,” Bush said.

But that was one sentence. He made a hard pivot.

The next three paragraphs were devoted largely to the importance of energy by way of the Gulf region - and its importance to the United States -- gas prices, and taunting Congressional Democrats.

“And so our discussion today is about energy,” Bush continued. “The Gulf Coast region produces a lot of energy for the United States. And we're now in the process of assessing any damage done to the infrastructure and what -- it's a little early right now to come up with a solid assessment. There are some encouraging signs. For example, during Katrina, rigs would be -- rigs moved because of the force of the storm and their anchors drug across pipelines, which caused there to be infrastructure damage. We didn't see much of that this time, although I will tell you that it's a little early to be making any forecasts.”

And he went on. “It's not too early, however, for the federal government to continue to coordinate with state and local people. That's why Secretary Bodman was in touch with Gov. Jindal. We want to make sure that we're in touch with these energy-producing states, to help assess what took place and what needs to happen.”

And then the naked politics: “One thing is for certain: When Congress comes back, they've got to understand that we need more domestic energy, not less; that -- and one place to find it is offshore America, lands that have been taken off the books, so to speak, by congressional law. And now they need to give us a chance to find more oil and gas here at home. I'd much rather American consumers be buying gasoline produced from American oil than from foreign oil. I'd rather our dollar stay at home than go overseas.”

More still: “And I know the Congress has been on recess for a while, but this issue hasn't gone away. And this storm should not cause the members of Congress to say, well, we don't need to address our energy independence; it ought to cause the Congress to step up their need to address our dependence on foreign oil. And one place to do so is to give us a chance to explore in environmentally friendly ways on the Outer Continental Shelf.”

Contrast that with Gov. Bobby Jindal at a news conference this morning, who didn't once mention the need for protecting oil rigs or the importance of the region to the country's energy.

He had more pressing matters.

Jindal did mention fuel -- fuel to power hospital generators and the potential lack of fuel and power at gas station. There certainly wasn't any mention of Congress. He did talk about reports of damage, pressing health-care needs and restoring power to various parts of the state.

"We are still being impacted by the eastern periphery of this storm,” Jindal said, continuing later, “[N]ow you got a storm that's caused widespread damage through a wide geographic part of our state. … [O]ne of the things I want to emphasize is that this is still a very, very serious storm that has caused major damage in our state. …

“We still have a number of pressing, urgent issues when it comes to health care. I described the evacuation as the kind of the pre- game, the pre-season, if you will. And I warned people that even after days of evacuations and preparatory efforts they shouldn't be exhausted because this was a marathon. We're not quite yet at halftime. To use a sporting analogy, people need to understand there's a lot, lot more work ahead of us. A lot of damage has been caused by the storm.”

And, politically does President Bush's hard pivot step on McCain's plea for compassion Sunday?

“It's time to open our hearts, our efforts, our wallets, our concern our care for those American citizens who are now under the shadow and the probability of the natural disaster,” McCain said. “So I hope that all of us … will not only keep in our thoughts and our prayers the people of the Gulf Coast but we will act, we will act together, we will provide the necessary relief, the necessary comfort. We will open our arms as Americans always have in time of challenge to those in our society who are less fortunate …

“So ahead of time I wanna thank all of my fellow Republicans as we take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats and we say “America, we're with you. America, we're going to care for these people in their time of need” and we're gonna display it in every possible way as Americans always have and Americans always will.”

Any wonder why this president's speech was conveniently set for 10 minutes before the networks go live with their coverage?

The only reason why the Democrats are so mad at Palin is because she stole their thunder from the DNC. and she did not even have to say a word. From the moment she was anounced on the VP ticket, all attention left Denver and was concentrated on her. Now the corporate hard line DNC members are getting their torches and pitch forks and running after Palin in an odvious state of envy
Bush is a coward. he sent his wife to go speak for him. hes at the white house drinking writing his speech
This is your typical GOP trickery. and its the only thing they are good at. They sure can't run the country.  Watch the speech tonight, you will see Russ Limbaugh behind the curtain pulling the strings like they are puppets. Thats how he got Palin on the ticket.
Time for all us democrats how a real campaign is run!!!! WE are a party of ALL just the Russ Limbaugh chosen
NO MATTER WHAT THIS IS GOING TO BE A WAR ABOUT WOMENS RIGHTS.  GET OUT AND VOTE DONOT LET THESE PEOPLE PICK OUR SUPREME COURT JUSTICES.
Gov Palin's name just keeps popping up everywhere on every blog since her appoinment as running mate on the republican ticket. Her Appointment on Aug 29 has completly erased all the hupla and fireworks of the entire DNC during that same week and continues today. She completely put Joe Biden in the background and her popularity is rising every day. The Democratic party is both outraged stunned and confused and believe that they have to attack her if they are going to survive this election. They are stretching now and realy digging to get dirt on this person, but it's only making her name more and more likely to get elected. Both Hilary and Obama have accepted her name on the ticket and are reacting as the republicans did when Joe Biden was made Obama's running mate. However because of the media and the constant coverage that the democratic party is puting on Palin, it's creating an underdog umbrella around her and starting a wave of conservative independent and liberal hero statis for her and her attempt to make it to executive office. In other words for every person that attacks her she gains 10 people who are considering her for office
Many thanks to the Democrats for releasing to the public Sarah Palin's home phone number and her social security number. Nice job dirtbags. Maybe someday soon we can return the favor.
Please, can we implement an IQ requirement for all those seeking political office.
Will the three rug rats:BUSH MC.CAIN AND THEIR CHAIN LINK start going to every  state where a huricane is about to make land fall?

Price of a barrel of oil dipped below $100/barrel. That's a Democrat problem.
For those of you who are sticking spears al Palin's record. Are you the same ones who backed up Al Gore who's own son was busted for useing and distributing drugs
His line during the speech about "trading up" (getting Laura instead of George) is funny considering McCain's trade billion dollar trade-up.

He is so out of touch.  joking about trading in wives is not funny.

Palin is not for women's rights. Her record speaks for itself. She is aganist a woman's right to choose and equal pay. Just because she is a woman does not mean that she is for women's right. It is patrionizing and insulting to assume that women will vote for McCain because his incompetent vp nominee is a woman. I am speaking as a woman.
The Reagan video is good, but it highlights that the Republican only have the past to run on and that past is getting old, as the video shows how long ago it's been since they have been great.  This video basically showed the past and how old John's been involved in politics.
Any wonder why this president's speech was conveniently set for 10 minutes before the networks go live with their coverage?

7-1/2 years of network nitwits running video of him speaking while you tell people what he's saying? Just a guess. PBS rules!!! :-)
Everyone's got problems these days. And I don't particulary like to post this, but I can't stand the hypocrisy with GOP/FOX Propaganda.

Author: Steven Benen:

(Political Animal) THE ALASKA INDEPENDENCE PARTY.... What may prove to be the single most damaging angle to Sarah Palin's role on the Republican Party ticket? There are quite a few contenders (ethics scandal, earmarks, inexperience, outside-the-mainstream views), but following up on Hilzoy's item from last night, Palin's association with the Alaska Independence Party might be the most politically detrimental.

It's practically impossible to make a "Country First" argument when your running mate is affiliated with a political party that puts country second.

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which since the 1970s has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States. And while McCain's motto -- as seen in a new TV ad -- is "Country First," the AIP's motto is the exact opposite -- "Alaska First -- Alaska Always."

Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, tells ABC News that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.

"We are a state's rights party," Clark -- a self-employed goldminer -- tells ABC News. The AIP has "a plank that challenges the legality of the Alaskan statehood vote as illegal and in violation of United Nations charter and international law."

For all the talk about Barack and Michelle Obama's patriotism, John McCain's running mate was a member of a political party that liked the idea of seceding from the United States altogether. It's the kind of idea that would have been more common in the 1850s.

Advocating secession is, practically by definition, un-American. How does the right go after Obama's patriotism while supporting a ticket with a candidate who joined a secessionist party?

We are, after all, talking about a party founded by a man who said, "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." The same man, AIP founder Joe Vogler, also said" [T]he fires of Hell are glaciers compared to my hate for the American government."

How is this any better than Jeremiah Wright? Why would Sarah Palin voluntarily join this man's political party?

Complicating matters, Marc Ambinder has a video of a AIP leader explaining that party members "must 'infiltrate' -- his words -- the other two parties and push for the cause of Alaskan independence."

I suspect McCain and his aides didn't know about any of this. Indeed, they couldn't have -- they didn't vet her. But now that this revelation has come to light, what's the defense?
What a tool.  If either of these bone heads had given 2% effort three years ago one would give them some clout on these matters.  Going thru the motions just because its an election years is a disgrace to common sense.

Katrina was not our first natural disater in this country and these idiots ack as if is was.  Reaction -vs- Proactive.  Bush is more concerned about politics, oilrigs, and the convention than the human lives that have been effected once again.
ahem.... wasnt it his daddy who took the offshore drilling off the "books" only ratified by congress in 1990?!? i wonder what his dad thinks of his flunky son. his dad who had enough smarts NOT to invade Iraq after Kuwait... enough smarts to put a moretorium on offshore drilling in the first place.

Between vettinggate, troopergate, earmarkgate, and babygate, it appears that McCain has added a new word to the dictionary.

Palin (pay lin), verb, palined, palining. – 1.  to make career ending mistake thru shear stupidity, laziness or lack of attention to details:   example -  The senator palined his presidential bid with his v.p. pick.  syn. senile
2.  to fire an employee for refusing to do unethical or illegal activities;  example - The Attorney General palined the eight federal prosecutors.
3.  be against government programs from which you previously benefited;  example - The governor now palins earmarks.  – syn. hypocrite.
4.  to force abstinence education instead of realistic sex education on high schools students;  example - The teenage pregnancy rate in Alaska skyrocketed after the governor palined the local school board. -syn. Delusion.
I AM TRIED OF HEARING THE COMPARISON BETWEEN BUSH AND MCCAIN. MCCAIN IS HIS ON MAN PLUS A MILTARY HERO. I AM TRIED OF SOUR PUSS KEITH OBER. ON MSNBC IF HE DOESN'T LIKE COVERING THE GOP THEN GET SOMEONE ELSE TO COVER IT.
Wow. How in the world did he get elected and re-elected? And they want 4 more years?!?!
Let's see, I have turned the channel from 'America's Got Talent' to 'Funniest Home Videos' just to tune out the  rep. convention.  Now I have to look at bush's picture here on your site and I think to my self- What a disgrace and shame he is as a president.  How does he sleep at night.  How must it feel to be the commander responsible for thousands of dead and maimed soldiers while your own personal financial wealth has increased.
Does money really ease a conscience?  Does he have one?
I'm so thankful for the end of bush regime.  I absolutely will not vote for anyone who resembles him in anyway.

what a turd - no republican president for me!
I can not understand how any thinking American, could be proud of the mess President Bush has created.  This nation is in serious trouble. We can not elect another person like him.  Senator McCain, is a war hero;however he has the same plans as President Bush.  I should say the people behind the scene has the same program.  Senator McCain, reminds me of a person that wanted to be President so bad that he sold his soul.  He is not the same person he was in 2000.  To be President he gave up everything that made him a good person.  He is now just a front for the Karl Rove gang, which is not good at all.  I feel very sorry for him he has losed who he was.
Apparently the Republicans think the rest of us Americans are uneducated and easily swayed. They are unable to answer the nagging question of: HOW would drilling now help us lower gas prices NOW?! They are unable to answer because it wouldn't. This is a nod to the oil industry which helped get Bush and Cheney into the White House. That's all it is. Oil is a finite resource, it WILL run out. When it does, do we want to have resisted change and be at the bottom of the heap in new energy technology...or leading the world in new energy technology? Drilling for oil will not help us do that, especially when you consider the oil companies already HAVE permits to drill in places where they aren't drilling yet. Perhaps we should demand that they drill there first.
Bush honestly believes he knows more than the average person (nobody has clued him in over the past seven years that most Americans are able to complete a sentence), so he feels the need to TELL us what we should want.
I'm done being told what I should want, and as far as I'm concerned, Bush should have been BANNED from Louisiana after Katrina...sort of an order of self protection. "Brownie...you're doing a great job."
Please, this man and his evil cronies can't leave office fast enough for me...and he certainly isn't doing McCain any favors by speaking at the RNC. Not so long ago, Bush was denying any changes in the world's climate and refusing to fund any renewable energy development, and now he's blaming CONGRESS? Please.

I am so dissapointed about your coverage this evening of the President's speach at the convention! You say that the media is not bias but you made him look rediculous during his speech. Even Channel 13 got it right. Are you that concerned that Obama can't win without your HELP? Why not play fairly. I do not believe you did not know what you were doing! I have NEVER written a network in my life but I am beginning to believe that I can't trust the media to be fair. I am a Journalism major from a Texas University and am appaled at what you have done. Shame on you NBC! I will not trust your channel for news in the future. You were disrespectful to show the President thanking his parents without a response. It was like watching Saturday Night Live.
I was horrified. When people like me start writing news channels for the first time you have a big PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel NBC should not have had to make excuses for the poor live feed without an audio link to the audiance.
There were excuses made as to why, but I think NBC News should organized and have the production controls to have our President not look as if we were gettting a production from a 3rd world country.
No excuses! You guys FAILED. Or did you, maybe this is just another way to attack our sitting president. Way to go NBC.
It's just not the Repukes problem it is the whole USA's problem.
Look at the crowd in the arena - they are old and white. Also notice how the theme is to look backward not forward. These people are living in the past when the world was a far different place. Their policies are royal, their ideas are childish, their morals are confused and their candidates are not going to Disneyland.
Yes George, screw the people, secure the oil.  That's leadership for you.
The Republicans (and unfortunately, the rest of the counrty TOO) have had a "Bush Problem" since 1980. It's been awful! They are like leeches that we just can't seem to pull off the collective leg of the American people.

* There must be a bunch of right wing thought police making sure that the posts that make it up here lately are "too hard" on dear sweet little Sarah Palin....how sad for journalism.

During the Dem's Denver Convention, you tried everything you could do to bring negativity into the event (even though it didn't work.) You interviewed wacko PUMA's, had more Republicans on to interview than Democrats, talked through almost all of the speeches given except for one per night, etc. It was embarrassing how destined you were to have it fail. And it was amazing in spite of your sorry coverage.

But this week, I do not see a reversal of fairness in your coverage at the RNC convention. You have let almost all of their speeches be shown in entirety from mid-day on. You hardly have any Dems on to discuss and dispute. You let the Republicans go on and on about nontruths and silliness like..one of the Republican talking heads was comparing Sarah Palin to Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Give me a break! Your job as a news organization it to tell the truth - the facts - the news. Not to sit hour after hour and let talking heads spout their partism nonsense without challenge I might add and give that to the American people as coverage. It is not sexist to question someone judgement, experience, policies, and ethic and criminal issues if they are on this national playing field. Yet, you are caving to the GOP talking point that you are being sexist because you are not just accepting Palin at face value because McCain says she is fine. McCain and his campaign are acting like children. There is no sexism here Carly Fiona. There is no sexism here Lindsay Graham. The GOP have just run out of good arguements and talking points to sell Palin and they don't have anything else left but to attack. That is all they have fear and attack.

There are so many start differences between the two conventions. The Dems was extremely diverse, healing, empowering, organized, and inspiring. It was about the future. The RNC Convention is about a bunch of old white people talking about the past, revealing in the glory days. It is not diverse, fear mongering, disorganized, and divisive. I heard Bush slam over half of the nation he is President over. Graham's nation of whiners apparantly according to the GOP does not include those who support John McCain. And the other divisive slam to Americans was that Fred Thompson portrayed anyone who did not buy what the Republicans are selling for the last 8 years are angry. You bet we are angry. And Fred, George, Phil, John - we are taking our country back - in spite of the media and how it serves as lap dog to the GOP!

MSNBC/NBC you should be ashamed of yourself.

Nice try!  More like repugs released the info and are blaming the DEMS - you're all liars!!!!
How do republicans sleep at night?????
I am a republican and a NBC viewer that watched the Democratic Convention on NBC.  I am now trying to watch the Republican Convention on NBC and instead of being able to listen to the speeches, I am listening more to the commentators.  I had to switch to ABC to listen to former Senator Thompson.  Please let the public listen to the speeches and save the comments for when speeches are over or just limit the amount of time. The thrust of President Bush's speech was already compromised. Please give equal time.  Thank you.
Bush problem? Are you kidding me? It's a Palin probem that they should be worried about!
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
was Fred Thompson constipated?  What a toolshed.
McCain is not who he claims to be. The POW’s and military despise this man. See for yourself at:

http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/
Bush can't even show up for the Republican convention?

There's no other way to explain that except that McSame knows that Bush hurts his chances of being president.  Or maybe he's just still upset at Bush for saying that he had an illegitmate black child?
I can not believe the stupidity of the Rup poster.  They think that the Dem are mad because all anyone is talking about is Palin.  Well guys I can remember that when Johnnie Mac was a boy all anyone talked about was the black death.  Hey it is not helpful if most people talking about Palin think it is a crazy pick.  Obama's number have gone up not down.  He just broke through 50 for the first time.  Good work John keep up.
What a lame excuse for a so called convention. Two Barbies, a lame duck, and the three speakers who have day jobs as clowns.

Palin has an understanding of foreign diplomacy because she knows Alaska is close to Russia.

To think the Republicrooks probably could have come up with better choices, but gave up when they had to reach into the bottom of the barrel.
I am so sick and tired of having fear and war shoved down my throat by the GOP that I could literally scream!  Does the RNC really not get it?  We regular people are out of work, out of savings, out of patience and out of time.  Losing homes and deciding between groceries and medicine should be what they are talking about - NOT the war and how we need to be in a perpetual state of FEAR.
Man, this convention is not watchable!!! The tributes made me puke almost. They had nothing useful to say about Reagan or Bush 41st. It was like a soap opera. Watching Lieberman talking is completely mad, what he says is completely empty, there's no fact to support his sentences. I don't understand how Palin has become the savior of the Republican party.. They're trying to enforce the message so people finally think it's true..

Man, I don't understand why there are people at their convention...
Yo jerks, Palin stole no thunder you stupid morons, every poll was up by more than five in Obama's favor. Palin stole he own dirty secrets thunder hallejuah, we we get anymoe luckily McCain made once agian a screwed up mistake.  I thein this was the biggest polical blunde sine suuni and shite, border issues.  I think I will throw my name in the hat in 8 years, hell you sure don't need experience!!!
It is amazing that here is a party who is said to represent America.  I struggle to see any representation of the multitude of races in the crowd.  it seems that here we are in 2008 and the Republicans are the RNOCP (Republican National One Color Party).  How amazing is that.

The wheels are in motion: look for a "change" agenda at the RNC...

The wheels are in motion: look for a "change" agenda at the RNC...

Keith get off of the covering of the convention, at least he tells the truth and always has eveidence to proof it, please don't be nice Keith, they deserve every bit of thrashin they get, a 72 year old senile man and an unqualified moose hunter.  slam them kieth since they all cry when Biden did but hey it's ok for Schmidt and Rove, the will loose money, I expect nothing more oil, more oil and moose burgers!!! Hit them hard they deserve it, bring brintney and paris to the outside show you doing, maybe they have some petinent info because the RNC sure doesn't
