Obama blasts GOP for ignoring economy

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
NEW PHILADELPHIA, OH -- During his second trip to the crucial battleground state of Ohio since his convention wrapped up in Denver last week, Obama slammed Republicans for ignoring economic issues on the first night of their convention -- furthering his argument that his GOP rivals do not understand the concerns of hardworking families.

“Not once did people mention the hardships that folks are going though, not once did they mention what are we going to do about keeping jobs here in Ohio,” he said of the speakers on stage in St. Paul, MN last night. “Not once did they mention what are we doing about all these retirees that are losing their pensions. Not once did they mention how are we going to make sure that Social Security is there for the next generation. Not once did they mention how are we going to make college more affordable so that young people aren’t taking out $40,000 or $50,000 in debt. Not once did they mention how are we going to make sure people can stay in their homes.”

He also referred to comments McCain campaign manager Rick Davis made to the Washington Post. “This election is not about issues," Davis told the paper. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

"I guess I don’t blame them, because if you don’t have any issues to run on, I guess you want it all to be on personality,” he told the crowd of about 220 people, assembled by invite only in a boiling hot outdoor courtyard at a satellite campus of Kent State University. “And if you’ve got George Bush’s track record and John McCain voting 90% of the time in agreement with George Bush, then you probably don’t want to talk about the issues either.”

Obama’s focus on kitchen-table issues is designed to attract voters whose top concern is the economy. In his brief remarks at the town hall, which was billed as a “Women’s Economic Event," he criticized McCain on taxes, the economy, health care, and other issues. He also used a book by the economist Larry Bartels -- “Unequal Democracy” -- to argue that Republicans had a bad track record for helping ordinary Americans.

“There’s a book that’s come out right now, by prominent economist -- irrefutable -- looking at the evidence showing that when Democrats have been in charge of the economy, the economy has grown faster and it’s also been fairer in the sense that everybody benefits. And when the Republicans have been in charge, the economy has grown slower and there’s been greater inequality. And this is, you know, looking back over the last 80 years,” he said. “So we’ve got a good story to tell. We’ve got a good track record, we’ve gotta tell it more effectively in this election.”

In an effort to show he understands the economic struggles many people are facing, Obama spoke about growing up in hard times with a single mother, something he has taken to stressing more on the campaign trail in recent weeks.

"It was tough and it was pretty much tough all the way through my teenage years,” he said. “Even though she was very proud and very independent, there were a couple of times when I was growing up where she accepted food stamps to make sure that we had enough food on the table.”

When a woman asked how the senator was going to ensure the election was not “stolen." he alluded to past voting issues.

“Well, I tell you what: It helps in Ohio that we’ve got Democrats in charge of the machines!” he said, before going on to talk about the need for a non-partisan voting rights division at the Justice Department.

People aren't sleepwalking through this presidential election like they were in 2004. We're paying attention because the Bush administration has finally hit us where it hurts everyday--the wallet.

We know better than to fall for the McCain campaign's tired efforts to make us all feel sorry for the supposed sexist treatment Palin receives. They're the ones forcing her personal story while the press continues to ask questions that matter relative to her inexperience and dangerous lack of knowledge on current world affairs. For every swipe at the media, there are five shots of Palin and her children. We're on to you and your tactics.

You're losing Mr. McCain and for that you have no one to blame but yourself and your party.
The people the GOP care about are doing just fine, and the stupid ones are never going to catch on, thank you.
Mr. Obama, Taxes and more taxes will not improve the economy.
Good guy, blast their a--s. Their themes are not the economy and the war in Iraq, but gender politics and storm politics. They are desperate to remain in power, so let them do whatever it takes to accomplish this mighty udnertaking.
Good luck Barack.

“The buck stops here!”
-President Harry Truman in 1948

"Answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade."
-Presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008.
You have to admit that the only plans the repukes have is to question Obama. Yet they have no plan of their own. Back to smoke and mirrors for the Repukes.I am a Christian but I truly believe in a seperation of church and state. Unlike some folks that believe in seperation of state from country.
"Obama slammed Republicans for ignoring economic issues on the first night of their convention"

This is EXACTLY why I don't like this guy.  What happened to the agreement to suspend this negative campaign rhetoric?

The Republicans chose to shorten their convention by one day due to the hurricane.  AND you know it Obama!

Why didn't you at least wait until after tonight (2nd night) to spout your crap!

Go ahead you smug Obama nuts -- have at it.
It's about time we got back to the issues.  The soap opera playing out this week is an embarrassment for all Americans.
Issues-oriented politics.

Obama/Biden 08
Stay on message.  Keep on talking about the economy and how Obama/Biden will help all Americans.  That's how you will gain the support of Independents and swing voters.

Stay out of the Palin mess. No drama Obama.
Good stick to the issues that matter the most Barrack. Don't get pulled into the mud sling. And that goes for you to Joe.

You two have got to pull this one off for our country.
Do your very best to win the White House back. Please!
Seems the only one ignoring the economy is Obama. He seems to think not drilling for oil, not building any nuke plants, and taxing corporations back to the stone age is the way to improve the economy. Oh, and rebate checks. Obama is going to send out rebate checks. How wonderful.
Obama, once again is right. The focus should be on the economy and how we can make things better. Let the McCain camp keep parading their VP Choice who didn't even know what her job duties would be 6 weeks ago.
Why should the GOP talk about ecenomics?  They might have to own up to their failure!

Anyway, the GOP is running the Karl Rove playbook.  Keep the culture war going (make folks cling to their guns and bibles) and talk about national security (bin Laden is the boogeyman and we have interest in bringing him to justice so long as he can scare up votes).  The economy is not in the Rove playbook.

This is how the GOP won in 2004 but it was about National Security then.  They're going to try this way again, but, guess what...?

...IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!
Well really, Barack, how do you ever expect to get anywhere if you insist on talking about issues?  The next thing you know, you'll be wanting to end gridlock and partisanship!
Okay Barack, people are having hardships in Ohio, and your solution is to raise corporate taxes, oops sorry, didn't phrase that right, it's close the corporate loopholes.  ust how again will that help businesses in this country keep jobs here?
Oh, Sarah !!

How do you feel about abstinence, only Sex Education ?

Is it a good thing ?
Is it effective ?

My two daughters had sex education classes in San Francisco

Both are in college, now
Neither had an 'out of wedlock' child

Maybe you shold listen to other view points on birth control, too.....

Did man walk with Dinosaurs, Sarah ?

Are Dinosaurs a communistic hoax, meant to deceive Christians ?

Should Noiah have included unicorns and leprechuans in the Ark ?

Does God want us to cut the capital gains tax ?

Does God want us to fight Islam ?

It's about time Obama Campaign. I know the media has got you all running scared about "attacking" dear, sweet little Sarah Palin (got to give her a free ride....kiss, kiss), but you better be leary of a wolf in sheep's clothing....but wait...she shoots wolves when they are in defenseless positions from inside helicopters....have to choose another animal...a FOX...yeah...a fox. Better be wear of this fox.

I think it is totally fair to question her every word, her every deed, her every move. This woman spells DEATH to our Civil Rights in this country and the media had better ask some really tough questions. She is hardly qualified to be VP, mushc less President.
Its the economy stupid!!!

Obama/Biden '08
Republican strategist Karl Rove said on Face the Nation Sunday that he expects presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama to choose a running mate based on political calculations, not the person's readiness for the job.

"I think he's going to make an intensely political choice, not a governing choice," Rove said. "He's going to view this through the prism of a candidate, not through the prism of president; that is to say, he's going to pick somebody that he thinks will on the margin help him in a state like Indiana or Missouri or Virginia. He's not going to be thinking big and broad about the responsibilities of president."

Rove singled out Virginia governor Tim Kaine, also a Face the Nation guest, as an example of such a pick.

"With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he's been a governor for three years, he's been able but undistinguished," Rove said. "I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America."

Rove continued: "So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I'm really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States."

Yes, the real problem with Tim Kaine is that he's only been governor of a large state for three years, and before that, he was only the mayor of a mid-size city. This, of course, made him "undistinguished," unprepared for national office, and the very idea of putting him on a national ticket was practically ridiculous.

Thanks, Karl.

Tim Kaine’s experience:
- Governor of Virginia (pop: 7,643,000) - 2 years 8 months.
- Lt. Governor of Virginia - 4 years
- Mayor of Richmond (pop: 200,123) - 2 years
- City Council of Richmond - 4 years

Sarah Palin’s experience:
- Governor of Alaska (pop: 670,000) - 1 year 9 months.
- Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (pop: 9,780) - 2 years
- City Council of Wasilla - 4 years

So I guess according to Karl Rove, on McCain:

"So if he were to pick Governor Palin, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I'm really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States."
A man of the people and a man for the people.

Obama/Boden 2008
What the heck is Rick Davis talking about???  The election is about a Composite View of the Candidates. Is that sort of like the Mental Recession we are all experiencing??? He sounds crazy???  Either he is crazy or I am!!!

No, it is absolutely about the issues, so much so that people better get off their butts and to to each candidates web sites and read their policy positions on each and every issue.  I will not be voting against my own economic interests because of some moral concern. I know right from wrong and don't need a politician legislating it for me.  I DO NEED MY GOVERNMENT TO WORK FOR ME AND ON MY BEHALF.

Rick Davis is crazy if he thinks for a minute that his bait and switch will work.  Not this time.
this is the same rick davis who said earlier, "john mccain does not speak for the campaign." also, karl rove has said the palin decision was "about campaigning not governance." geez, even republicans every now and then will slip in the truth. sexism, babies, moms, troopergate, secession are all flak meant to divert attention away from the one important lack of qualification - national security and foreign affairs and ability to be president. the "composite" view of john mccain is of panderer not maverick, impulsiveness, and poor judgment and stick-a-fork-in-your eye childishness.
Of course Rick Davis doesn't want the election to be about issues (this is, of course, the man who gave us the Britney/Paris "clebrity" ads).  It would put too harsh a spotlight on the ineptitude of the Republican party these past 8 years.  It would also make people realize that a McCain presidency would simply be "Bush: The Sequel".

Meanwhile, McCain is whinning that the media is too harsh on Palin.

Obama/Biden '08!
This is what is needed discuss the issues. Republicans want this to be a cultural election not issue driven. Pallin will give a fine speech about family values and how she is a reform candidate. What will not be mentioned is her lack of reform unless it is to get elected and heaven forbid for her to be held accountable to invetigation for her firings of state officials. What will not be mentioned is her family ties to the AIP. What will not  be mentioned is her "God is on her side" comments. And of course no mention of the poor or working class except to state how great their lives have been under Republican rule.

Nice to see that Barack now has Keith O. on his paid research staff. Lets hope Barack points out the black helicopters as they fly over.
i can't wait for the debates.  here is a preview

Obama: issue, issue, issue, and issues.

McCain: you're a radical racist sexist, 9/11, and POW.

go get these crooks Obama/Biden!
http://horneddevil.proboards98.com/index.cgi?board=idpoliticsboard
Wake up America!! When Democrats are in charge life is better economically for Americans!! McCain thinks the economy is going great. He is out of touch, just like Bush. Republicans don't care about the middle class or the lower class. Bush/McCain=More of the same!!

Vote Obama/Biden and help save America!!!
Too bad the Bush Justice Dept isn't non-partisan anymore.
Why not ignore it....the economy is boring to someone who's been a Peee OH DoubleU.  Hell, give me a good war to sink my teeth into.  The people will get by, they always have...look at me and money bags, we're doing ok and nobody's been through as much.  Remember folks...Service and country first and if that doesn't get your vote how about free pictures of Cindy in her buffalo chip outfit.
Only democrats and minorities should be subject to intense scrutiny of their professional and personal conduct. You angry liberals need to back off this woman.
Donna, Lincroft, NJ (Sent Wednesday, September 03, 2008 2:31 PM)

We liberals are only angry wehn peole like you talk out of the side of their mouths. Reread your statement and tell me that is not racist. Personally I dont care for the talk about Palin's daughter. It is the repukes that have made it an issue so they can exploit it for what it's worth. Then cry foul. I just think that it is irony that Palin is against sex education and with the lack of it her daughter is pregnant. The boys mother was forced to tell this lie,"they were planning to get married anyways the baby is just a bonus".   Which reads minus the double talk, "they sure messed up but we are gonna fix it,see they are getting married folks it's ok we are glad to have this baby, that these kids did not plan for and are not prepared to take care of."  Just irony folks irony.
Keep the pressure on Obama - - it won't be long now and you WILL be president - no doubt about it any more.  The republicans are shooting themselves in the foot.
You go Barack!!! Hit them hard
Three times in recent years earmarks for Wasilla, AK have shown up on McCain's list of objectionable spending--all requested by its mayor--Sarah Palin!
_____________

Democrats have been horrible at letting the Republicans create the CW over the years.  They really need to push back hard.  Especially on the taxes and economy issues.
Family values are just that - for families to decide. The government is not the entity to determine the right and wrong of these kind of issues. It's funny how republicans want to keep the government out when it comes to taxes, business regulation, minimum wages, etc. - but want the government to jump right into the middle of marriage, patriotism, religion and the like...
AMERIC WAKE UP JOHN MCCAIN'S CAMPAIGN MANAGER SAID

"THIS CAMPAIGN IS NOT ABOUT THE ISSUES"

"THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT A COMPOSITE VIEW OF WHAT PEOPLE TAK AWAY FROM THE CANDIDATES"

FINALLY MCCAIN & HIS lOBBYISTS HAVE TOLD US IT'S NOT ABOUT US, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

IT'S ABOUT GO IT ALONG TEENS BECAUSE THE MORE YOU ARE NOT EDUCATED ABOUT PREGNANCY PREVENTION, CHRISTIAN OR NOT, YOU CANNOT HAVE SOMETHING TO FALL BACK ON WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE

IT'S ABOUT TURNING AMERICAN MORAL VALUES UPSIDE DOWN

LET'S TELL THE WORLD AMERICA IS NOT PROMOTING TEEN PREGNANCY

YOUR HARD WORK AND TRAINING YOUR KIDS TO FINISH SCHOOL DON'T GET PREGNANT, GET AN EDUCATION, COMPETE IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

IS NO LONGER REVELANT

LET'S JUST KEEP EXPOLITING THE TEENS

Thank you, Obama !!

Keep a laser like focus on the economy

You might also want to mention that McCain / Palin are both 'ANTI-CHOICE'
BOTH want to end a woman's 'right to choose'

Obama / Biden '08
Now, MORE THAN EVER !!
Barack Obama pretty much predicted the RNC...
So far, it's been the same old reheated "big government/9-11/big-taxes/gun-toting/bible thumpin' nonsense. Completely devoid of issues.
They have a lot to hide. It's not even the theoretical Republican Party anymore. Just a bunch of bigoted, xenophobic, greedy, hawkish warmongers. At least it was nice to see what appeared to be everyday people in the crowd at the DNC convention.
I have watched the convention and all the talk about is McCain being a P O W  and his father being a 5 star general and his grandfather too, well I am not interested in the I am more interested in how I am going to by gas next week and put food on the table and get my  medication. I want to know what they plan on doing to get the prices right where we can afford it and live like a  SENATOR

OBAMA/BIDEN08
Obama & Joe, don't take the bait and fall into their trap. Stick to your message and continue to get everyone in the US involved in the process.

Unfortunately, I'm starting to see similarities with 2004. Kerry tried to reason with logic and intelligence. Bush went with emotions. He won because of the "Don't confuse me with facts! My mind is made up!" mentality that appears to be running rampant again in the RNC.

Seems easy to live my platitudes, labeling, name calling. Saves you from having to think for yourself, which in turn could result in the "liberal" button being stuck to your pointed head.

It also seems silly to me that the RNC is blaming the Democrats for all the ills that have befallen our country and the world. How convenient! Haven't the Republicans been in power for the last eight years? McCain's been in politics for 20 some years, why couldn't he "fix" things before? Especially with a Republican President and Congress?

The reason? He doesn't really care about leading the country. He just wants to be President at any cost. He's totally in it for himself, same as Bush.
Hmmm... More of the elite media efforts to tell one side of the story. Where did journalism go?  This tag probably won't even get posted! More censorship!

Obama will tax and spend and weaken an already thin military(Thanks Clinton!).

I do support a woman's right to choose, but I can't vote against  McCain on that issue alone. That's a specific fight for another day.
